As we continue in the "I Am" series Jesus announces He is the True Shepherd.  The church is often compared to sheep and Jesus the shepherd.  Jesus has established Pastors and Leaders to display shepherd like qualities.  Jesus lets it be known that their is one True Shepherd, but every other under shepherd should follow the example that Jesus set.  Often times Christians tend to recognize their own faults, but hold those in leadership positions to a different standard.  As we go through the differences in a shepherd and hireling we will see that all Christians should display the characteristics of the True Shepherd.

Woodson spoke on concept of "hirelings" as opposed to "public servants." Hireling is a person who works for pay. Dr. Carter G. Woodson defines the real servant of the people as "one who lies among them, thinks with them, feels for them, and perhaps dies for them. " “If the highly educated Negroes have not learned better the simple lessons of life one cannot expect the laboring classes to conduct themselves differently. In the large number of cases the employers of Negroes in common labor, in which most of them are now engaged, assert that there is no hope for advancement of Negroes in their employ because Negroes will not work under foremen of their own color. Luke 14:7-11 To read the biographies of those who God has used down through the ages and how they first began is fascinating to say the least! Normal people like you and me, no trims, no frills, nothing spectacular to the outward eye; yet it seems that it pleases the Father, to take the nothings and the nobodies of this world and to make them ambassadors for Jesus Christ! As one looks to find the golden thread running through the accounts of the giants God has used throughout the centuries, one finds that rather than being golden, the thread is of lowly linen; one not of grand beginnings but of small beginnings, humble beginnings. I believe wholeheartedly that God is wanting to work among His people in our day and is raising up labourers to labour in His harvest. The places where He is looking for labourers are the places He has always looked – not the high and lofty, but the lowly. This sermon is a challenge to all that would have the Lord use their lives for His glory; are you prepared to serve God in the lowly places? Oh, may it be and in so doing, in due season we shall hear the words “...go up higher.”

This Gospel reading is a favorite of mine. Do you notice that Jesus refers to himself, and only himself, as the shepherd? The rest are hirelings and no matter what might be suggested in some people's titles, the fact remains that all are hirelings. Something useful to keep certain people in perspective. Here is also where Jesus speaks of other sheep he3 has which are "not of this fold". He does not say how many other folds there are, or how many other sheep there are, and he makes no claim that they have anything in common with the people he's addressing here! And this gives hope to many who have not been marching in lock-step behind one particular leader. So much to know, and so much to prepare to learn!

This Sunday's Gospel reading is one of the most powerful, and it can be difficult to see where to focus a sermon. It includes the words of how he has "sheep which are not of this fold", which is a good verse to inspire controversy! But perhaps more significant is how he speaks of himself as the shepherd and others as the hireling. And please note that nowhere in the New Testament does Jesus appoint anyone else as shepherd. In fact, his command to Peter is "Feed my sheep". While there are some really wonderful hirelings, we need to beware of those who would claim to be shepherds.
