Rebecca Lemov, professor of the history of science at Harvard University and author of “The Instability of Truth: Brainwashing, Mind Control, and Hyper-persuasion,” talks about the origins of brainwashing. The term ‘brainwashing,’ was first used to describe what happeded to American POW's during the Cold War in Korea. After enduring terrible conditions and indoctrination by their Chinese captors, 21 American prisoners of war refused to return home, believing that life in China and under communism would be better. Lemov explains that our psyches can be manipulated and it is that the same malleability of the mind which helps us to grow and evolve also makes us extremely vulnerable to coercisve persuasion. Lemov also reflects on some of the more subtle 'soft brainwashing' techniques that we’re exposed to today, techniques that are primarily fed to us through our screens. Guest: Rebecca Lemov Professor of the history of science at Harvard University and author of “The Instability of Truth: Brainwashing, Mind Control, and Hyper-persuasion.”
In 1842, the Qing Empire signed a watershed commercial treaty with Great Britain, beginning a century-long period in which geopolitical and global economic entanglements intruded on Qing territory and governance. Previously understood as an era of “semi-colonialism,” Stacie A. Kent reframes this century of intervention by shedding light on the generative force of global capital. Based on extensive research, conducted with British and Chinese government archives, Coercive Commerce (Hong Kong University Press, 2024) shows how commercial treaties and the regulatory regime that grew out of them catalyzed a revised arts of governance in Qing-administered China. Capital, which had long been present in Chinese merchants' pocketbooks, came to shape and even govern Chinese statecraft during the “treaty era.” This book contends that Qing administrators alternately resisted and adapted to this new reality through taxation systems such as transit passes and the Imperial Maritime Customs Service by reorganizing Chinese territory into a space where global circuits of capital could circulate and reproduce at an ever greater scale. Offering a deep dive into the coercive nature of capitalism and the historically specific ways global capital reproduction took root in Qing China, Coercive Commerce will interest historians of capital and modern China alike. Maria Esguerra escaped the Children of God at the age of 22 with her two children who have disabilities. Maria's firsthand experience drives her passion to support fellow survivors of cults and institutions, advocating for specialised understanding, interventions and access to governmental schemes such as Redress. Maria has actively engaged in media and advocacy efforts to raise awareness about the challenges faced by people escaping coercive environments. She founded a support group for second and multi-generational survivors (also referred to as SGAs or MGAs) from all cults. It addresses the devastating impacts from these groups, including abuse, denial of basic rights and forced labour. Coercive control is about trying to take away someone's autonomy and agency. It's a form of domestic abuse that is often misunderstood and frequently dismissed. In this replay episode, I sit down with the incredible Laura Richards—renowned criminal behavioral analyst and expert on domestic violence—to break it all down. Laura and I discuss the misuse of terms like “narcissistic abuse” and “toxic relationships,” and why getting the terminology right is critical. When these words are misapplied, it can cause real harm, making it harder for victims to recognize what's happening to them and for others to take it seriously. We also talk about the broader societal factors that allow domestic violence to persist and why these patterns are so deeply embedded. We take a closer look at high-profile cases like Gabby Petito and Lauren Dunne Astley to illustrate how coercive control plays out in real life and the devastating consequences it can have. Laura also sheds light on how the media often memorializes male perpetrators while subtly placing blame on victims, a pattern that continues to fuel dangerous misconceptions. Beyond analyzing the problem, Laura shares the incredible work she's doing to have coercive control legally recognized as a form of domestic abuse. She explains why advocacy, education, and legal reform are essential to protecting victims and shifting the way society understands domestic violence. This is an eye-opening conversation, and one I hope will help others recognize coercive control for what it is. In this episode, I answer two questions from Michal in New York. The first question explores whether setting limits in CCPT could feel manipulative or coercive to a child, particularly when giving ultimate choices. I clarify how proper limit-setting—when done with validation and neutrality—empowers children rather than controlling them. I also explain the importance of structuring limits to maintain the integrity of the therapeutic relationship. The second question focuses on working with a highly impulsive child who frequently tests limits, struggles with regulation, and seems to forget boundaries each session. I break down why repeated limit-setting is still beneficial, how to balance structure with freedom in CCPT, and why trust and patience are essential when working with dysregulated children. If you've ever questioned whether you're setting “too many” limits in session, this episode provides insight into how to keep sessions both therapeutic and child-centered. Emma Cline should've been thrilled — at 25, she'd achieved every writer's dream. But her $2 million book deal for her bestselling debut novel “The Girls” was too much for her ex, who slut-shamed her, threw false plagiarism and cyber-spying charges at her, and dragged in friends in a years-long campaign to bring her down. In this episode of Narcissist Apocalypse, Caroline thought she met her Christian Prince Charming, and for 3.5 years, their dating life was near perfect. However, once they were married, Caroline's Christian Prince Charming quickly turned into a sexually coercive boundary pusher who couldn't bare the thought of Caroline loving their child more than him. It's a story of caretaking, isolation, guilt trips, sexual coercion, self gaslighting, exhaustion, PTSD, gaslighting, minimization, people pleasing, religious beliefs, wearing someone down, coparenting, and much more. *** CONTENT WARNING - This episode discusses sexual coercion in graphic detail throughout the episode. *** If you want to be a guest on our survivor story podcast, please click here or send us an email at narcissistapocalypse@gmail.com To help out our podcast, please fill out our listener survey, click here. HR3 Aidan Grogan: UNFPA's Support of Coercive Population Control Policies. 2026 Election. 1-28-25 by John Rush
In this episode of Your Kids Don't Suck, Rythea and Cara dive into the practical side of non-coercive, collaborative parenting (NCC) - how to guide children without control, how our triggers shape our reactions, and why guiding our kids is an essential part of the philosophy (even though many NCC parents struggle with it).We start by checking in on how we've been doing lately and explore how our personal triggers challenge us to reframe our children's behaviors instead of reacting from old conditioning. We also read a listener's question and discuss how to use play as a way to guide young children—shifting away from control while still offering structure and support. Many NCC parents worry about being too controlling, but collaboration doesn't mean a lack of guidance. We talk about what true collaboration looks like and how it differs from permissiveness or coercion. This episode is full of real-life insights, practical examples, and compassionate reframing for parents trying to walk the fine line between honoring their child's autonomy and offering the guidance they need.--It's important and essential to put our voices (Rythea and Cara) in a context. We are two white, cis-gender, straight, middle-class women living with financial and societal privilege. Because of this, our perspectives are limited and do not reflect the realities of all our listeners. In this episode of The Counseling Psychologist podcast series, Junsang Park talks about the article recently published in TCP titled, "Gendered Dynamics: Coercive Parenting and Academic Vigor in South Korean Culture."
Tracy talks with domestic violence researcher Dr. Emma Katz about her book, "Coercive Control in Children's and Mothers' Lives." Many recognize violent behavior as transgressive, but more common abuse tactics fall under coercive control -- intimidatation, humiliation, isolation. The abuser's goal is to preserve their entitlement by breaking down their victim/partner's emotional state to greater depths of vulnerability and dependence. Dr. Katz's book, published by Oxford University Press, is the first child-centric exploration of this topic. She discusses not only the damange abuser's can do, but also – most importantly – how people have broken free and their mighty stories of resistance.

Join Laura and Sarah Edmondson as they break down cults, coercive control, narcissism and psychopaths, as well how to help someone who is being manipulated and controlled. Sarah is a 12-year-NXIVM-member-turned-whistleblower. In March 2016 Sarah gathered with several other women in the belief they were entering a secret sisterhood they were told was created to empower women. She was not prepared for what came next. Each woman was told to strip naked and branded with what turned out to be Keith Raniere's initial – the ultimate act of ownership and coercive control. We'd love your feedback! What resonated for you in this episode? What do you want more of?Coercive control and dv thrive in secrecy and so for many reasons victims lose their voices in the process of these relationships. Once a victim has left they have to make the decision of what parts of their story to share and with whom. This is especially important when a victim finds themselves in the family court system trying to protect their family. When facing a divorce with your abusive ex partner it would seem that a trial is inevitable and based on research and the experiences of so many I've worked with, it's a crap shoot to whether your story will be heard or believed. What if there was another way? What if you as the survivor could use your expertise on your ex and your family to get a better deal in divorce? This is what we are discussing today; the different ways you can use your knowledge and voice to get a settlement agreement with your ex, even if only for some of the concerns, instead of leaving it all up to the cookie cutter decrees set by most family court judges. If you have a case that needs a custom plan due to things like substance use or abuse, then the tips and tricks in this episode may be exactly what you are missing. Julie blends professional insights with her personal story of navigating a high-conflict custody dispute. She avoids sharing too many specifics to respect her ex and children, she explains how her background in dispute resolution helped keep their family out of the courtroom, despite major challenges. Julie specializes in helping law firms enhance client experience (CX) through customized training and support. Outside of work, she volunteers to support parents navigating divorce, ensuring the safety and well-being of their children remain central. Coercive control is a pattern of behavior used to dominate, manipulate, and control another person, typically in the context of intimate relationships. It is a form of emotional and psychological abuse that can also include physical or sexual violence but is often more subtle and sustained. The goal of coercive control is to strip the victim of their autonomy and independence, making them dependent on the abuser. This type of control puts the covert narcissist in charge and leaves the target at the mercy of their moods, attitudes, behaviors, and wants. I am Renee Swanson, and I help people recover from covert narcissistic abuse. Are you tired of feeling isolated and alone? Are you searching for people who get it? Are you confused, reactive and unsure what to do? Are you running in circles in your mind? Are you worried for your kids and the effect this is having on them? Do you want to know how not to raise another narcissist in this world? I can help you! In this episode, we talk about why traditional methods of managing diabetes often fail and how a different approach is needed. You've accomplished so much in life, but if your health and diabetes are holding you back, it's time for a change. Coercive diets and quick fixes don't work long-term. Instead, learning to change your relationship with food and cravings is key. Coaching can guide you through this process, helping you stop sacrificing your health for unhealthy foods. Celebrating the Massachusetts Coercive Control Bill In this episode, I discuss the recent passing of the Coercive Control Bill in Massachusetts, the celebration I attended with many incredible survivors and advocates. And what the passing of the bill means for survivors of domestic abuse. Key Points: Massachusetts unanimously passed the Coercive Control Bill, becoming the 7th state to classify coercive control as a form of domestic violence. The bill (H4744) expands protections against abuse and exploitation, including laws against revenge porn. Coercive control is defined as a pattern of behavior intended to threaten, intimidate, harass, isolate, control, or compel compliance of a family or household member. The law doesn't criminalize coercive control but allows it to be considered a criminal violation of a protective order. Highlights: Meeting with advocates and survivors at the celebration event Discussion on the need for further legislation and support for survivors Importance of addressing post-separation abuse and ongoing support for survivors Resources Mentioned: Perfect Prey podcast Dr. Lisa Fontes' website Article on Massachusetts Coercive Control Law Coercive Control Consulting - Legislation Information Books Mentioned: "Invisible Chains" by Dr. Lisa Fontes "Framed" by Dr. Christine Cociola (upcoming release) Call to Action: Educate yourself about coercive control Contact your local domestic violence agency if you suspect coercive control Reach out to state legislators to support coercive control legislation Share ideas for supporting survivors, especially in post-separation scenarios Get Involved: Check out TRAC (Together Rising Above Coercion) in Massachusetts Look for similar initiatives in your state Join the conversation! Discussing boundaries, attachment styles, high-conflict personalities, and coercive control from Faith Harper's book *Un-F Your Boundaries*. The episode highlights why setting boundaries isn't easy and how societal, psychological, and interpersonal factors influence boundary-setting.Key discussion points include the importance of boundaries, which are not always intuitive and require intentional learning and practice. There are four main challenges to setting boundaries: social and societal pressures, attachment styles (secure, avoidant, anxious, and disorganized), dealing with high-conflict personalities, and patterns of coercive control. The episode also touches on political language and boundaries. Some terminology related to boundaries, such as patriarchy and systemic issues, can carry political baggage. However, it is essential to navigate these terms to understand their underlying concepts without political bias.Attachment styles play a significant role in boundary-setting and maintaining relationships. The breakdown of attachment styles includes secure (60% of people, based on research), avoidant (rigid boundaries), anxious (permeable boundaries with a fear of loss), and disorganized/fearful-avoidant (a combination of high anxiety and avoidance).Coercive control is a form of emotional abuse aimed at manipulating and dominating another person. This form of control can occur in various relationships, whether heterosexual, same-sex, etc. It is distinct from high-conflict personalities as it involves strategic manipulation to erode someone's autonomy.Coercive control indicators include isolating the victim from friends and family, monitoring or restricting access to finances, communication, or movements, emotional manipulation such as gaslighting, threatening or intimidating behaviors, and enforcing strict rules or expectations to undermine autonomy.Support the show

In this episode of Narcissist Apocalypse, Paris tells her story of marrying a victim-playing abuser. At first, Paris was love-bombed in a way that set her heart on fire. It was intoxicating and overrode all her other senses. From there, her future abusive husband began to play the victim in his life and use guilt to hook Paris in for good. It was a whirlwind that was hard to break free from, and before she knew it, as soon as they were married, the abuse and devaluation began. It's a story putdowns, doubt, humiliation, entitlement, self-centeredness, stalking, church abuse, physical abuse, sexual coercion, emotional abuse, manipulation, coercive control, gaslighting, infidelity, domestic violence, domestic abuse, narcissism, toxic relationships, self-worth, patriarchy, financial abuse, and post separation abuse. *** CONTENT WARNING - This episode discusses physical abuse, sexual coercion, and uses the "r" word when recreating dialogue from their abuser. *** If you want to be a guest on our survivor story podcast, please click here or send us an email at narcissistapocalypse@gmail.com To help out our podcast, please fill out our listener survey, click here.
