"Am I being paranoid?" "Is this a real threat, or am I just damaged?" "Am I making this into something it's not?"These aren't idle questions. They're the abuser's voice — internalized so deeply it sounds like your own thoughts. Coercive control teaches you that your reality isn't real. And that lesson doesn't uninstall when you change your address.According to the unsealed affidavit, surveillance footage captured Michael McKee at the Tepe residence on December 6, 2025 — the same day Spencer and Monique were at the Big Ten Championship game in Indianapolis. Monique left at halftime. Court records state she was upset about something involving her ex-husband. There's no documented tip-off.She was 200 miles away. And her body knew. This episode examines what survivors carry after they escape coercive control — the hypervigilance, the PTSD, the triggers that contaminate ordinary life, and the invisible toll on the people who love them. Spencer inherited Monique's fear alongside her. This episode speaks to survivors and the people trying to understand them.Your fear is not weakness. Monique's instincts were right.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? My guest today, Fatima Bhutto, knows more than most about loss and living with a traumatic family legacy. Now 43, Fatima is descended from one of Pakistan's most prominent political dynasties. When she was just 14, her father, the politician Murtaza Bhutto, was killed by his political opponents during the premiership of his sister, Benazir Bhutto. Her grandfather, the former President and Prime Minister, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, was also killed by the state. I tell you this because, despite now being a prominent writer and speaker in her own right, Fatima is the first to admit how much this shaped her. She is the author of two novels including the Women's Prize long listed The Shadow of the Crescent Moon, and three works of non-fiction. The most recent is The Hour of The Wolf, an unflinching memoir about the decade Fatima spent in a coercive relationship in her thirties, and her beloved dog, Coco, the jack Russell terrier who became her lifeline. Fatima joined me to talk candidly about the single dad she adored, the impact of intergenerational trauma and her longing for motherhood. We also discussed why no-one is immune from coercion, learning to let go of shame, toxic self-esteem, how it feels to be older than her father and, wait for it, there is some joy!, being a dog lady! And yes, I promise, there is a happy ever after. CW: I should warn you there is discussion of coercive control from the outset. * You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including The Hour of the Wolf by Fatima Bhutto as well as the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me. * If you enjoyed this episode and you fancy buying me a coffee, pop over to my page on buymeacoffee.com. • And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com Learn more about your ad choices. Coercive control is now a criminal offense in the United Kingdom, Scotland, Ireland, and parts of Australia. In most of the United States, it still isn't.That gap between what we know about intimate partner abuse and what we've codified into law is the difference between intervention and obituary. The Tepe case illustrates why.According to witnesses, Monique Tepe allegedly experienced death threats, strangulation, and forced sex during a seven-month marriage to Michael McKee—a board-certified vascular surgeon with impeccable public credentials. There is not a single police report. No restraining order. No documented complaint. Under current law in most American jurisdictions, what allegedly happened to Monique wouldn't meet the threshold for criminal intervention until physical evidence appeared. This is the first in a five-part educational series examining coercive control—not as clinical terminology, but as lived experience. We break down the full toolkit: isolation, monitoring, financial dependence, weaponized intimacy, identity erosion, and invisible rules enforced through consequences rather than words. What each one feels like from the inside. Why victims don't recognize it while it's happening. Why the cultural definition of abuse is failing the people who need protection most. The public-private divide is central to how coercive control operates. McKee's documented credentials—National Merit Scholar, Ohio State medical graduate, no criminal history—created a public identity that allegedly bore no resemblance to what was happening behind closed doors. That duality isn't unusual. It's the pattern."At least he doesn't hit me" remains the most dangerous sentence in domestic violence. It defines abuse by visible injury rather than systematic destruction of autonomy. The law in most states still agrees.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? In this episode of Narcissist Apocalypse, Kris shares her journey of surviving childhood trauma and escaping an abusive relationship with a narcissistic partner. Growing up in a chaotic household with an authoritarian father, Kris learned early on to seek external validation and to read the moods of those around her for survival. These patterns primed her for manipulation, and when she met her future husband as a teenager, she became entangled in an isolating, controlling relationship marked by emotional abuse, intermittent reinforcement, gaslighting, and escalating physical abuse. It's a story of trauma bonding, authoritarian family dynamics, scapegoating, external validation, emotional abuse, triangulation, push-pull cycles, gaslighting, intermittent reinforcement, hoovering, generational trauma, future faking, guilt, shame, intimidation, control, isolation, financial abuse, smear campaigns, projection, physical abuse, sexual abuse, reproductive coercion, parental alienation, DARVO, self-blame, therapy, cognitive awakening, parallel parenting, and ultimately, rediscovering oneself. It's a new year and we're jumping into Feedback Friday with a few powerful viewer questions that go to the heart of coercive control, cult dynamics, and identity defense. Let's look closer at what some call the “7M TikTok cult,” why law enforcement says their hands are tied, and what families can realistically do when adult loved ones appear isolated, manipulated, or financially controlled. Then we'll shift to Julie Rowe's interview with Nate Eaton for a moment and examine how claims of special spiritual authority mirror the same psychological patterns seen in Chad Daybell's prison letters, long after both were stripped of credibility. We're not attacking beliefs, we're recognizing behavioral patterns, protecting families, and understanding how power, identity, and influence operate when accountability is resisted.#MirandaDerrick #MelanieWilking #7MFilms #RobertShinn #ShekinahChurch #JulieRowe #ChadDaybell #LoriDaybell #TammyDaybell #TyleeRyan #JJVallow #CharlesVallow #FeedbackFriday #ProfilingEvil #CultDynamics #CoerciveControl #7MTikTok #Psychology #UndueInfluence #TrueCrime #BehavioralAnalysis #cult #Cults #domesticviolence #DV========================================20% OFF Newspapers.com https://newspapers.com/profilingevil ========================================Email your questions to: ProfilingEvil@gmail.com========================================
American special forces capture Venezuela's president and his wife in a daring nighttime operation, returning the deposed first couple to the US to stand trial for alleged narcoterrorism. Meanwhile, protests in Iran over worsening living conditions, coupled with a cratered economy, threaten that theocracy's future. GoodFellows regulars Niall Ferguson, John Cochrane, and H.R. McMaster kick off 2026 by discussing both the precedent and the consequences of the move on Maduro, whether other nations (i.e. China) will invoke their own “Monroe Doctrines” to justify regional power grabs, plus the chances of similar fates awaiting Greenland, Colombia, or Cuba. After that: the panel's thoughts on whether Iran's regime is in its dying days as conditions on the ground deteriorate; and the chances of political transformation spreading worldwide in 2026—a là the end of the first Cold War—potential signposts of freedom as America celebrates 250 years of individual liberty. Finally, the fellows send their best wishes to a pair of GoodFellows guests—former Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse and Hoover's Victor Davis Hanson—as the two gentlemen do battle with cancer. In this eye-opening episode, Kevin sits down with three powerful women on the front lines of one of the most misunderstood crises in America.Gina Jernukian, founder of Soul Survivor Ink… author-educator Geraldine Donaher… and national survivor-leader Shanna Parker, who works directly with trafficked youth across Arizona.Together, they expose the hidden world of coercive control, branding, and trafficking — and reveal how awareness, compassion, and action can save lives.Shanna brings the raw, unfiltered reality of working with trafficked minors every day — offering insights that only someone who has survived and now rescues others can share. From understanding how traffickers groom through trust and love, to learning why survivors are branded like property, this conversation is a wake-up call, a blueprint for protection, and a reminder that knowledge is the only real immunity.
Our research reveals severe and long-lasting psychological consequences for those subjected to such behaviors. Consistent boundary violations often characterize coercive control, a pattern designed to exploit and dominate. Victims frequently experience heightened stress, anxiety, depression, and a strong link to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD. Their self-esteem and self-worth erode, leading to feelings of worthlessness and shame. This systematic undermining fosters learned helplessness, making independent decisions incredibly difficult. Emotional trauma, persistent fear, and hypervigilance are common. Abusers often isolate victims, cutting them off from support, exacerbating loneliness. Chronic stress can also manifest physically, with issues like insomnia and high blood pressure.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/lets-talk-sex--5052038/support.
Episode 112: In this episode Shane Meyer-Holt returns for another conversation about the journey of engaging in and building non-coercive communities. We talk about how individualism and capitalism have profoundly shaped so many of us in themes of self-reliance and the importance of opportunity (as well as the freedom to take up those opportunities). These are deeply inbuilt into the psyche of our societal assumptions - and they happen to make regular sustainable commitment to communities of care and mutual obligation an incredibly difficult prospect. If we ultimately believe (and in many respects, understandably so) that we are on our own in keeping our heads above water - then commitment to community can come into conflict with our need for self-reliance. And if we think that we must be free to take every opportunity available to us, then mutual care and genuine healthy obligations to one another may well get in they of those opportunities. In many respects, all modern collectives are struggling with this new reality. Some embrace a model of high-reward, high-punishment community as a mechanism to sustain participation. But what happens if you don't believe in that kind of church or collective dynamic? We come to this conversation as people involved in leading church communities (Shane, at Fitzroy North Community Church in Melbourne, and Michael, at Edge Kingsland in Auckland). Chiefs owner Clark Hunt integrates his Christian faith into the team culture, leading quarterback Patrick Mahomes to become increasingly vocal about his belief. We question if Mahomes' public piety is genuine or a savvy form of career compliance, especially given the financial insecurity of non-guaranteed NFL contracts. This coercive atmosphere, previously linked to Christian nationalist rhetoric (like Harrison Butker's speech), highlights the dangers of blending theology with corporate power. We criticize the hypocrisy of wealthy team owners emphasizing prayer while ignoring global suffering.News Source:Essentially SportsBy Surab KumarNovember 9th, 2025
How long do you think it takes for someone to heal after leaving a cult?Coercive control is the underlying tactic of narcissistic abuse relationships, often known as a cult of one.Does it give you more self compassion as you work towards healing when you realize that your healing mimics the healing of someone healing from a cult? In this episode of The Rising Beyond Podcast I do a deep dive into the similarities between domestic violence and narcissistic abuse relationships and those of cults with Brooke Deanne. She uses her personal experience of leaving a high control religion which then led to an abusive romantic relationship to help survivors heal. We discuss the similarities of tactics used post separation or when leaving a cult, how cult experiences may lead to future abusive relationships, and the first steps to healing.Brooke Deanne is a Trauma Healing Mentor, Rapid Transformational Therapist (RTT), and NLP Practitioner empowering female survivors of abuse and trauma to reclaim their lives by rewriting their stories via a holistic approach to access new levels of mind, body, and spirit integration. After overcoming her history of abuse as an ex-Jehovah's Witness, and toxic relationships, Brooke brings profound insight to her work and as an advocate against religious abuse and domestic violence. She is the author of The Grief Monster, a trusted resource in therapy offices and hospitals to help children process loss, and Shattered, Broken, & Beautiful - Losing My Religion and Finding Faith, a transformative memoir exploring her healing journey from a religious cult and abusive relationships. NXIVM is back in the headlines after Allison Mack's new podcast — but for survivors like Sarah Edmondson, the story never ended. She was one of the faces of The Vow on HBO — the woman who blew the whistle on NXIVM's “self-help” empire that turned into a full-blown notorious cult. This episode is about what happened after the escape: healing from coercive control, rebuilding trust, and learning to believe your own voice again.Sarah opens up about the psychological hangover of leaving NXIVM — how fear, shame, and identity unravel once the system is gone.We unpack what freedom looks like after indoctrination, how cultish behavior shows up in everyday systems, and the slow process of learning safety again. It's a conversation about resilience, humor, and the long road back to self-trust.If you haven't heard Part 1 yet, here you go! https://podcast.allisonhare.com/post/274What You Will Learn:How Sarah Edmondson escaped the NXIVM cult and what freedom really looked likeThe psychology of coercive control and how to spot it earlyWhy rebuilding trust is the hardest part after leaving a cultHow cult dynamics show up in modern coaching and wellness spacesHow to protect your agency without losing your sense of belongingResources MentionedPodcast: A Little Bit Culty hosted by Sarah Edmondson & Nippy AmesPre-Order new book: A Little Bit CultyThe Vow (HBO docuseries)Scarred by Sarah Edmondson (book)Sarah Edmondson's website – sarahedmondson.comNotable Quotables (from Sarah Edmondson)“I see a woman who's trying to right a wrong.” (02:20)“When you're in a cult, you don't think you're in a cult.” (13:34)“Black-and-white thinking is culty thinking.” (11:58)“Freedom isn't a moment. If you think you'd never fall for a cult, think again. The NXIVM cult didn't lure the weak — it attracted smart, curious, ambitious people looking for growth and belonging. People just like us.And right in the middle of it was Sarah Edmondson, a high-ranking member who helped blow it wide open in The New York Times and HBO's The Vow.In this conversation, we unpack how something that looked like empowerment turned into manipulation — and how the need to belong can become a weapon.Sarah shares what actually happened inside NXIVM, how coercive control disguised itself as “self-improvement,” and the exact moment she realized she was part of something dark.We talk about the psychology that keeps smart people compliant, the power structures that mirrored everyday life, and what breaking free really cost her. It's part cult exposé, part human study — and all about reclaiming your voice when someone else has tried to own it.What You'll Learn in This EpisodeHow the NXIVM cult disguised coercive control as personal growthThe psychology of belonging and why smart people get trappedThe moment Sarah Edmondson decided to blow it all openHow language and hierarchy keep people obedient without forceWhat the NXIVM story teaches us about modern cults and powerResources MentionedPodcast: A Little Bit Culty hosted by Sarah Edmondson & Nippy AmesPre-Order new book: A Little Bit CultyThe Vow (HBO docuseries)Scarred by Sarah Edmondson (book)Sarah Edmondson's website – sarahedmondson.com Quotes (from Sarah Edmondson)“Cults don't prey on weakness — they prey on hope.” 09:2409:2409:24“I didn't wake up and think, ‘Oh God, I'm in a cult.' This week I’m joined by Nules, host of the Ireland Crime and Mysteries podcast. She was actually my first guest back in early 2024, so it’s great to have her back on. Nules runs one of the best true crime podcasts out there: diving deep into solved and unsolved murders, vanishings, and mysteries that have left an unsettling chill at the heart of Ireland. Today, we get a real taste of all that. We talk about the rise in crime statistics, the impact of mental health on criminal behaviour, and how society is becoming increasingly desensitised to violence. We also dig into some specific cases, including the Michael Gaine and Irene White murders, exploring the complexities of these investigations and the ongoing issues of coercive control and contract killings. My new thriller How It Falls Apart out now
Episode 110: We continue our series on non-coercive community - a bunch of conversations in which we are exploring the possibilities and challenges we experience in building sustainable non-coercive collectives and communities. In this conversation, Shane Meyer-Holt discusses his research into capitalism, care and community. We reflect on how so many aspects of our lives have become shaped, defined and understood in capitalist/neoliberal terms. Shane suggests that capitalism is not just an economic theory but has become a social imaginary - in other words, it has come to profoundly and deeply impact how we think about self, identity, relationships, community and care... and what kind of 'productivity' (and use of our energy) really matters and is worth something. Instead of viewing ourselves as interdependent communal beings who rely on each other through mutual obligation, we are shaped to see ourselves as competitive self-interested autonomous individuals trying to get ahead. We explore how freedom is defined within this framework and the overwhelm/stress it can generate, the increase in self blame, and the powerful cultural tides that make regular and sustainable participation in non-coercive communities really challenging. Shane is a co-leader of Fitzroy North Community Church in Melbourne and Michael is leader of Edge Kingsland, a church in Auckland. Shane's research draws on the work of Bruce Rogers-Vaughan and his book "Caring for Souls in a Neoliberal Age". Email: feedback@intheshift.com Support: www.patreon.com/intheshift

Hi Listeners. I'd love to hear from you. Send an email to Janet@jesteinkamp. It is not possible to respond to your Fan Mail posts directly. You'll peel back the second layer of the coercive-control “onion” and learn seven concrete ways control shows up: isolation, monitoring and surveillance, degradation and humiliation, control over everyday life, gaslighting, threats and intimidation, and rules with punishments. You'll hear real-life examples (from “just preferences” to silent treatments) and why these patterns so often lead to estrangement. Most importantly, you'll get calm, practical guidance on what you can do right now—how to keep communication gentle and consistent, how to avoid confronting the partner (and why that matters), and how to signal a safe haven without adding pressure. If you suspect coercion in your adult child's relationship, this episode gives you language, lenses, and next steps—at a pace that protects connection.**All stories are an amalgamation of stories shared by clients and podcast listeners.Related EpisodesPeeling the Onion One Layer At a Time (Layer 1) - Overview of Coercive Control and Estrangement — the foundation for this series; defines the dynamics and why they escalate.Peeling the Onion One Layer At a Time (Layer 3) Gatekeepers & Coercive Control Navigating “gatekeepers” without triggering coercive abuse and further estrangement.#FamilyEstrangement #CoerciveControl #EstrangedAdultChildren #ParentReconnection #Gaslighting #ParentalAlienation #ParentChildReunification #FamilyCommunication #EstrangementGrief #ReconnectionStrategist #EstrangementExpert #DomesticAbuseAwareness #AdultChildRelationships #FaithFamilyHopeSupport the showFor more information, please go to https://www.WhenOurAdultChildrenWalkAway.com to find resources, strategies and tips to prepare to repair! Episode 107: This is the first in a series of conversations with Shane Meyer-Holt about the possibilities and challenges in building non-coercive communities and collectives. In particular, we're interested in what church looks like for those of us who feel done with high-control/high-demand forms of religion, who are unable to go back to certainty, who have no desire for the "carrot & stick" based motivations for community life, and who want something much more inclusive. This is not a "fix-it" series for the church. We get that many in the wider church are actually pretty happy with the way things are and we are not trying to convince them to listen to us. Nor are we building the next idealised model for how we think church should be. This is a series for the people who want something different... and we are going to try and tackle the variety of cross pressures that occur in modern western neoliberal culture when we hope to build non-coercive communities of care and meaning. In this episode Shane and I talk about the church communities we help to lead. Shane co-leads a church in the inner north of Melbourne, Aus (Fitzroy North Community Church) and I (Michael) lead a church in Auckland, NZ (Edge Kingsland). We talk about why we're still doing this kind of thing... and start to discuss the hopeful things and the profound challenges that arise when trying to build non-coercive community where people are able to be honest, to care about each other and to belong in meaningful ways.
In this episode of Perfect Prey, I sit down with filmmaker and NXIVM Whistleblower, Mark Vicente, to explore the insidious nature of narcissism and coercive control. Known for his role in exposing the NXIVM cult and for his upcoming documentary Narcissist Playbook, Mark brings a rare blend of lived experience and narrative insight to a conversation that is both deeply personal and profoundly educational.Together, we examine how narcissistic abuse thrives on confusion, manipulation, and silence. Coercive control isn't always visible—often it hides in plain sight, eroding a survivor's sense of self through emotional, psychological, and sometimes spiritual abuse. Mark shares how he came to recognize the patterns of power and control he endured, and why storytelling and awareness are key to dismantling these dynamics. As a licensed clinical social worker and survivor of coercive control myself, this conversation is one I know will resonate. We talk about the trauma of emotional abuse, the grooming tactics abusers use to gain and maintain control, and the long road to healing after escaping these toxic dynamics. Mark's courage and clarity offer validation to those still trying to make sense of what happened to them, and hope to those who are just beginning to find their voice. This is more than a podcast episode… it's a call to awareness, to healing, and to action. Tune in to better understand the trauma of coercive control and narcissistic relationships, and to remember that your truth is the first step toward freedom.Connect with Mark:Mark's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/markvicente/?hl=enNarcissist Playbook Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thenarcissistsplaybook/?hl=enWebsite: https://www.empathynotincluded.com/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/markvicente/Listen to Mark's Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/wtf-is-on-my-mind/id1646783869Watch on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCX1OsELrINqvPVImbyM6qdQResources Mentioned in this Podcast:

Sanctions have become the go-to foreign policy tool for the United States. Coercive economic measures such as trade tariffs, financial penalties, and export controls affect large numbers of companies and states across the globe. Some of these penalties target nonstate actors, such as Colombian drug cartels and Islamist terror groups; others apply to entire countries, including North Korea, Iran, and Russia. U.S. policy makers see sanctions as a low-cost tactic, but in reality these measures often fail to achieve their intended goals--and their potent side effects can even harm American interests. Backfire: How Sanctions Reshape the World Against U.S. Interests (Columbia UP, 2022) explores the surprising ways sanctions affect multinational companies, governments, and ultimately millions of people around the world. Drawing on interviews with experts, policy makers, and people in sanctioned countries, Agathe Demarais examines the unintended consequences of the use of sanctions as a diplomatic weapon. The proliferation of sanctions spurs efforts to evade them, as states and firms seek ways to circumvent U.S. penalties. This is only part of the story. Sanctions also reshape relations between countries, pushing governments that are at odds with the U.S. closer to each other--or, increasingly, to Russia and China. Full of counterintuitive insights spanning a wide range of topics, from commodities markets in Russia to Iran's COVID response and China's cryptocurrency ambitions, Backfire reveals how sanctions are transforming geopolitics and the global economy--as well as diminishing U.S. influence. Emotional abuse is far too common and yet it can be difficult to recognize, because it's subtle at first and often covert. It can deplete a person's self esteem and simultaneously create dependence upon the abusive partner, which blurs reality and makes it hard to leave. But what is emotional abuse and how can we recover from an emotionally abusive relationship? In this episode, Jodi talks with therapist and author, Leah Aguirre, LCSW, about her new book, Is This Really Love? Recognizing When You're in a Coercive, Controlling, and Emotionally Abusive Relationship--and How to Break Free. Jodi shares a story about her first addictive relationship and Leah talks about the aha moment that led her to leave an emotionally abusive partner. Jodi and Leah also discuss coercion and control; personality traits of an emotional abuser; and relationship green flags (signs that a relationship or partner is safe). In this episode, we're breaking down the subtle but dangerous ways narcissists use coercive control in conversations to manipulate, destabilize, and maintain dominance over others. If you've ever walked away from a conversation feeling mentally foggy, emotionally drained, or questioning your own thoughts, you may have been subjected to narcissistic coercion without even realizing it. Coercive control is a form of psychological abuse that narcissists use to undermine your confidence, distort your reality, and keep you second-guessing yourself. Unlike overt aggression, these tactics often fly under the radar, making them difficult to recognize until the damage is already done. What You'll Learn in This Episode: How narcissists use rapid-fire questioning to overwhelm you, keep you off balance, and push you into emotional dysregulation. Why gaslighting is a core tool in coercive conversations and how it causes you to doubt your memory, perception, and even your sanity. The subtle way narcissists withhold information, distort facts, or contradict themselves to create confusion and maintain power over the narrative. How guilt, shame, and fear are weaponized in conversation to manipulate you into compliance and emotional submission. Why they interrupt, talk over you, or shift blame to prevent you from asserting yourself and setting boundaries. The Psychological Impact of Coercive Control Research shows that victims of coercive control often experience chronic stress, anxiety, low self-esteem, and cognitive dissonance—the mental discomfort caused by holding contradictory beliefs. Over time, these conversations can leave you feeling powerless, disconnected from your own thoughts, and emotionally dependent on the narcissist for validation and approval. But knowledge is power. Once you learn to recognize these tactics, you can stop engaging in their games and take back control of your own mind. Breaking Free from the Cycle Healing from narcissistic coercion requires self-awareness, emotional detachment, and boundary-setting. In this episode, we'll discuss practical strategies to help you: Stay grounded and recognize when a conversation is designed to manipulate you. Trust your own perception rather than seeking validation from the narcissist. Respond with clarity and confidence instead of falling into the trap of emotional reactivity. Use gray rock and other disengagement techniques to limit their control over your thoughts and emotions. If you've ever struggled to hold your own in conversations with a narcissist, this episode is for you. Understanding their tactics is the first step to reclaiming your voice, your confidence, and your emotional independence. Tune in now, and let's expose the mind games so you can break free from the cycle of coercive control once and for all! Become immune to narcissists by healing the unhealed wounds that make so many of us more vulnerable to their abuse. Rebecca Lemov, a professor of the history of science at Harvard University, explores the origins of brainwashing and delves into the concept of how our minds can be influenced through coercive persuasion.
Rebecca Lemov, professor of the history of science at Harvard University and author of “The Instability of Truth: Brainwashing, Mind Control, and Hyper-persuasion,” talks about the origins of brainwashing. The term ‘brainwashing,’ was first used to describe what happeded to American POW's during the Cold War in Korea. After enduring terrible conditions and indoctrination by their Chinese captors, 21 American prisoners of war refused to return home, believing that life in China and under communism would be better. Lemov explains that our psyches can be manipulated and it is that the same malleability of the mind which helps us to grow and evolve also makes us extremely vulnerable to coercisve persuasion. Lemov also reflects on some of the more subtle 'soft brainwashing' techniques that we’re exposed to today, techniques that are primarily fed to us through our screens. Guest: Rebecca Lemov Professor of the history of science at Harvard University and author of “The Instability of Truth: Brainwashing, Mind Control, and Hyper-persuasion.”
