In Defense of Ska
In Defense of Ska Ep 73: Dane Roberts (Victoria Ska & Reggae Festival)

In Defense of Ska

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 8, 2022 66:00

In the summer of 2000, ska was on the decline in the US, but up in Victoria, Canada, it was as popular as ever. Local promoter Dane Roberts--who'd been throwing ska shows for a few years--decided to throw a full-on ska festival. It was in part a tribute to Mathew Bishop, the man that introduced him to ska (he'd died from a mountain climbing accident two years earlier), and it was Dane's final college assignment. If the festival made money, he passed. If it didn't, he failed. The first year of the Victoria Ska & Reggae Festival was a big success. Dane booked Chris Murray, The Scofflaws, King Django, and a reunion show for local favorites, Pressure Cooker. But the following year, ska died in Victoria, and attendance dropped. But Dane kept the festival going anyway, even paying out of pocket to do so. He kept the Victoria Ska & Reggae Festival going no matter how popular (or unpopular) ska was. And he even expanded the festival to include acts rooted in ska and reggae. It's the longest-running ska festival in North America. Guests over the years have included Fishbone, Less Than Jake, The Wailers, Ozomatli, The Real McKenzies, The Sierra Leone Refugee All Stars, Mos Def, Neville Staple, Cherry Poppin' Daddies, Voodoo Glow Skulls, The Itals, Ky-Mani Marley, Toots and the Maytals, Dr. Ring Ding, and Larry and His Flask. The festival celebrates its 23rd year on June 22-26, 2022. We sit down with Dane to learn more about the festival's history, why he's so in love with ska, and get a glimpse of Victoria's local ska scene with groups like The Bombasts, Pressure Cooker, One Drop and Grossbuster. Tickets can be purchased at https://victoriaskafest.ca Support the show

Jeshua Marshall is known and loved for his energetic theatrics and genre-bending musical genius. He shares the DL on the long-defunct Larry & His Flask that might brighten your day. For this week’s episode of “Bend Don’t Break” we talk with Jeshua Marshall, the bassist and co-founder of the internally known punk band Larry & His Flask. The Flask toured with the Dropkick Murphys and played the mainstage on the Warped Tour and they are likely the most famous act to emerge from the wilds of Central Oregon. Marshall started bands as a high school kid in Redmond with his brother Jamin and spent much of his adult life touring and performing around the world. For a while, he was the campaign organizer for Greg Delgato who ran for the Oregon State Senate in 2016. Marshall is not afraid to take to the streets to rally for the rights he believes everyone deserves and he is a familiar face in the social justice scene around Bend. He’s the head of two bands “Guardian of the Underdog” and “Hot Club of Bend” which have very different sounds, but both are a joy to experience much thanks to Marshall’s charisma and the talent he attracts. In the midst of the pandemic, he released his first solo single “Gogo,” with many more singles to follow, which can all be found on iTunes and Spotify and other online music sellers. “Bend Don't Break” is hosted by the Source Weekly’s publisher Aaron Switzer and co-hosted by Laurel Brauns. Every week, we feature a guest from the community with a new perspective on living through the COVID-19 pandemic including mental health professionals, economists, educators, artists, business people, local leaders and historians.

We're Back! (bonus)  And we're coming in with a classic fit episode! So take a load off, unbutton your pants, and time travel back to April of 2019 with us! Austin has amnesia because he slipped and fell in the tub... Speaking of tripping, Wes had an awesome float experience and tells us all about it. From tiny hallways, to bare foot strangers, we cover the good and the bad of floating! Next, we get our bananas out and get CANCELLED. See you guys in culture jail! Also, have you ever taken a 2 year old to funeral? Wes's son made car noises while the family mourns a loss and honestly, it was awesome! Gotta love the juxtaposition of old v. new and life v. death. Speaking of kids, whatever happened with the girls from Sixteen and Pregnant? Just curious...  And last but definitely not least, we get more serious and talk about an issue that seems to have been lost in the ramped up news cycle... Sesame Credit in China! The government made the system mandatory for all citizens at the beginning of the new year, and it's not been covered by mainstream media yet. Citizens are subject to dystopian rules and measures to mold them into what the regime deems "perfect" citizens and are required to report their fellow citizens to the authorities for even minor infractions. People are then added to a "blacklist" in which their finances, travel, and living opportunities are restricted. Obviously, Wes has some conspiratorial thoughts on this, and Austin manages to make it about how smelly balls can get!  NOTE: this episode ends a bit abruptly. We got in trouble with podcast mommy for recording too loud and too late! Our bad... All of this and much more, on BSFTB! SHOUTOUTS TO BHAD BHABIE Xi Jinpeng (Winnie the Pooh) Larry and His Flask!
