Today in the Catholic Mass Series, we finish our discussion of Sacred Music in the Liturgy. There has long been tension between the creative and innovative developments of music with the need to regulate what is appropriate and fitting for use during the Holy Sacrifice. Does this mean that we need to only use music that has been composed centuries ago? What about some of the hymns that we have grown up with – are they appropriate? To answer these and other questions, we discuss what type of music is and is not proper during Mass. We all love chocolate. And Sandip used to bring home little samples of the confection to share with his family and friends in India. But perhaps he didn't need to travel so far.

Today in the Catholic Mass Series, we begin a new section examining the externals that surround the Mass, like vestments, the church building, and starting today, sacred music. From antiquity, music has been a part of worship. In fact, even false religions recognize the importance of music in their respective devotions and rites. Today in the first of two episodes on music and the Mass, we explore the history of music in sacred worship, starting with Jewish ceremonies and the Psalms, leading up to the present day. We also start to examine the various kinds of music in a sung Mass. Perhaps by coincidence, several of my strangest theatrical experiences were alongside Kevin Arsham, starting with our lip-syncing to a Chipmunks cover of Blondie's “Call Me” in a children's revue called Pure Imagination. Kevin and I reminisced about this and other odd onstage adventures and caught up on his post-theatre life. Recorded on 8/25/24.

Aiken's unique interpretation infuses the classic carol with his signature vocal warmth and emotional depth making it a song for our times. Written in 1962 by Noël Regney and Gloria Shayne as a plea for peace during the Cuban Missile Crisis, "Do You Hear What I Hear?" is timeless in its message, yet even more resonant today. Sara and Danny are back for the final time, to cover Willy's Chocolate Experience in Glasgow - an event organized by a company named House of Illuminati, that was giving more Fyre Fest than "Pure Imagination." Sara and Danny get into it all, from the AI generated, spelling error-riddled poster, to the off-brand character of The Unknown (a terrifying masked figure who "lives in the walls"), and an Oompa Loompa who appeared to wish she were literally anywhere else but there.
