Have you ever sat down next to someone at an event and found out they were the rock star of that event? Such was the case of me meeting Tarran Deane, CEO of Corporate Cinderalla Leadership Development Company. What captivated me was not the polish of her presentation, but rather the manner by which she presented. Her spirit lept across the audience. Though Tarran unpacks how this Corporate Cinderella came into being during our interview, the real nuggest are her business growth journey to coaching C-Suite executives to consulting champions. Discover her carpash. Yes, that's right carpash (trust me I had no idea.) Discover how passion for horses, or rather horse power as she and her husband ride Ducati motorcycles and channel that energy to challenge CEO's to take more risk. I heard Kirk Samuels speak for the first time at a Toastmasters District competition. I could not believe he was on stage being vulnerable with a topic around ography. I began questioning if I could ever be that vulnerable on the areas in which I struggle in life?  The amazing take-a-way was that his solutions were not like anything i have heard before. In fact you might be surprised as some of his answers. He is both pragmatic and practicle.  Today, I interview Kirk and we discuss the outcomes of in a way that invites people to see the struggles in their own life. I started my new year off right. I spoke for Smile Brands Inc. Annual Leadership Conference on a Saturday morning in Dallas, Tx. and was so fired up after hearing CEO Steve Bilt fire up his team, I became nervous on how I build on his passion, enthusiasm and energy.  Steve's lessons learned on turning a company around is not amazing. The amazing part are his words are more than words. His words are a call to action. I mean when was the last time you saw your CEO not speak what the culture should be, but model the culture 365. If you are a CEO when was the last time you modeled the culture to ensure all the employees new you were 100% invested in the company success. In this episode of Life's New Normal Steve talks about his formula for connecting with people and helping them move forward in their passion and purpose. You will hear him discuss what he missed when he was not CEO for about two years and you will find his similarities to other industries (including the world of sports) fascinating. Today I have the distinct pleasure of interview my colleague and friend Mona Patel for the second time. She just found out she is has made the top ten finalists in CNN's prestigious Heroes Award show, which will air on the same channel on December 17th at 6:00pm. On a spring day in 1990, Mona Patel was walking to class at Cal Poly University when a drunken driver slammed into her. She was 17. Weeks later, when Patel got out of the ICU, she underwent her first amputation. It was the start of seven years' worth of surgeries in attempts to salvage the rest of her leg. But along the way, as Patel continued to struggle physically with her disability, she also struggled to find a support group for amputees. In 1997, with the prospect of another amputation, Patel made a promise. "I vowed that once I got back on my feet, I would start one," she said. Today, Patel's nonprofit, the San Antonio Amputee Foundation, aims to help amputees rebuild their lives. The group offers peer support, education and recreation opportunities, as well as financial assistance for basic home and?car modifications and prosthetic limbs. Please vote for her every day and help her win the grand prize of $100,000.00. This will go toward expanding and funding her program for youth in living with limb loss. About the host. Scott Blackburn is Interim Deputy Secretary of Veterans Affairs. Previously Scott led the My VA Task Task Force charged with reorganizing and transforming the Department of Veterans Affairs. Scott is formerly a Partner at McKinsey & Company where he served industrial companies on a wide range of topics related to large business-wide transformational change. Prior to joining McKinsey, Scott served as a Captain in the US Army and worked for the Cleveland Browns (and dreams of one day returning to pro sports to run a franchise). I caught up with Scott at the National Veterans Wheelchair Games and had the opportunity to ask him about how his process of transforming the VA paralleled transforming the lives of veterans through sport.  The National Veterans Wheelchair Games are an outgrowth of the Department of Veterans Affairs’ historic involvement in wheelchair sports. Wheelchair sports had their beginning in the aftermath of World War II, when young disabled Veterans began playing wheelchair basketball in VA hospitals throughout the United States. Interest in wheelchair basketball soon spread to other sports such as track and field, bowling, swimming, and archery, spawning the formation of several associations devoted to new and innovative wheelchair sports. At 19 years old  Dawnna called a broken down to dodge home. She made her first bartering deal soon after. A man who hated washing windows at a local YMCA exchanged this task to her for access to a hot shower. Soon after, she was befriended by a not so friendly police officer who called her "stupid."  She would learn later that it was a term that pushed her out of her situation and into her greatness.  We all have greatness.  How does yours show up? What impacts does it make on society?  Dawnna transformed a class business project (that the professor did not agree with)  into a $250M Empire called BizIntel.   What do you do when someone says no? Dawnna sold BizIntel for 250M.  Today she shares her incites and where her drive comes from to rock riches. Today we will share positive vibes from a Paralympic Champion, race into London 2012 with a remarkable person and special athlete, and “Hurdle Adversity” with a leading Paralympic Advocate, athlete and motivational speaker. Meet Tony Volpentest. Tony achieved his dream of running in the Olympics, becoming a four-time Paralympic Gold Medalist and five-time World Champion sprinter—a seemingly incredible accomplishment because Tony was born without hands or feet. We’re honored to share his inspiring story. Becoming a world-class athlete takes enormous determination, courage and faith and our good friend, Anjali Forber-Pratt, exudes all of those attributes. As a child Anjali has been paralyzed from the waist down but she never allowed her wheelchair to limit her. Anjali is an Olympic Bronze Medalist and she has her sights set on Gold in London. Behind every great athlete is a strong advocate. John Register was at the top of his sport as an all-American hurdler on the verge of qualifying for the US Olympic Team only to suffer a devastating injury that would lead to the loss of his leg. He overcame that to compete as a Paralympian in two sports. Today, John is on the management team at the US Olympic Committee in the Paralympic Division.

What would you do if you broke your back?  How would you feel if the doctor told you, "you will never walk again."? What action would you take next? These questions and more are answered in my next segment of Creating Life's New Normal as I interivew the amazing Alana Nichols. Alana is a two-sport phenomenon in wheelchair basketball and alpine skiing. She grew up in Farmington, N.M., and was an avid snowboarder throughout her youth. In 2002, however, Nichols landed back-first on a rock while attempting a backflip on her snowboard. The injury caused her to be paralyzed from the waist down. Nichols didn’t let her athletic career stop there, though, as she began playing wheelchair basketball just two years later. Her talent in the sport ultimately took her to the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games, where she and Team USA earned gold. Shortly after the Beijing Games, Nichols moved to Colorado and picked up adaptive alpine skiing through the National Sports Center for the Disabled in Winter Park. At the Vancouver 2010 Winter Paralympic Games, Nichols earned two gold medals, one silver and one bronze in alpine skiing events, becoming the first female athlete in history to win gold medals in both the summer and winter Paralympic Games. Tune in from 9-10am ET on April 23, 2016. About the host: John Register is a four time all-American track and field athlete and graduate of the University of Arkansas, a Gulf War Army Veteran who lost his leg in a crippling hurdling accident, and now a two time and two sport Paralympic athlete and professional speaker.  His show, Creating Life's New Normal, to inspire people to "Hurdle Adversity and turn obstacles into opportunities.

Two great guest today. Both are from Oakland, CA and are truly inspirations. My first guest is Arif Khati who is the founder and curator of The Multi-Ethnic Sports Hall of Fame (formerly African American Ethnic Sports Hall of Fame) which was established in 2000 in Oakland, California to broaden public understanding of ethnic history and celebrate the role of cultural diversity in the growth of professional sports. Arif has literally inspired tens of thousands and kept important figures of American history in the forefront of society. My second guest is prolific and profound. Ashlie "Reign" Williams is a hip hop artist (minister) and professional speaker. She is truly a gift and sees a world where people pursue passion instead of security, where people love themselves more than the thoughts of themselves, and where people live in the right now rather than the moments that have passed or those that have yet to come.  She sees a world where the mind body and spirit agree and God is easy to see. You are not going to want to miss this show! John Register is a professional speaker who teaches businesses how to Hurdle Adversity and Create Life's New Normal.
