Reggie Rivers - former NFL running back, motivational speaker and Founder and President of The Gala Team - joins Tavis to discuss his unique perspective on personal growth and development.
Born into a military family, Reggie Rivers learned how to adapt to new situations early. Not only did he move from state to state, he also spent time in foreign countries where he found one common language: sports. During his high school years, he stayed in San Antonio and attended Randolph High School on the Randolph Air Force Base. He played several sports and football eventually rose to the top. While on scholarship to Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State University), he had a stellar senior season at running back and was noticed by an NFL scout. He didn't get drafted, but was offered free agent contracts by the Denver Broncos and Philadelphia Eagles. He also had a “real” job in place after graduation. He decided to have some “fun” and go to the Broncos NFL training camp after being assured the real job would be there when he got cut. He made the team. He'd make the team six more times until he was cut before the regular season in 1997. After he was cut, Reggie continued to write (something he'd done since high school), worked in radio and also in TV. From there, he moved into a successful keynote speaking career and wrote several books. Then, a little over a decade ago, he found what he calls his true purpose: helping non-profits raise money with a company he formed called The Gala Team. From just a few events the first year, Reggie's team now works with hundreds of non-profit organizations each year and they are starting to expand beyond Colorado. Continuous reinvention at its best!
Brett sits down with former Denver Bronco, Reggie Rivers and discuss making it in the NFL against extreme odds, surviving in the NFL, what makes a great leader, and life after football. Reggie talks about his company, The Gala Team, where they work closely with non-profit organizations, raising money for various causes. Reggie even let's us know who his favorite head coach was that he played for.
According to Vic, Reggie Rivers is "the smartest man [he's] ever known." That's a bold statement, but after listening to this episode, it's hard to disagree with. In addition to being a beloved former Denver Bronco, Reggie Rivers is an author of five books, an accomplished media personality and public speaker, and President of The Gala Team, a team of experienced and dedicated professionals who specialize in nonprofit fundraising events. On this episode Vic and Reggie talk about Reggie's journey from military brat to unlikely college football star, to even unlikelier NFL player, to his eventual cut from the Denver Broncos. Reggie even shares which football position lends itself to the dumbest players. It's post-football that the conversation finds another gear as Reggie shares insights about everything from sports gambling to wars between ant colonies, to the richness of our democracy (and what threatens it), to the George Floyd protests of 2020. There's lots of laughs between old friends, new insights, and a thoroughly fun and rewarding listening experience. Available on podcatchers everywhere. Reggie Rivers played for the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent from 1991-1996. Prior to the NFL, Reggie was a standout player for Texas State University where he was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 2003. Reggie may not have been the biggest or fastest player, but he understood that for him to achieve his goal and dream of playing football in the NFL he needed to have the mindset that he would give 100% and outwork his teammates. Every season was a gift to Reggie, and he knew his pro-football career wouldn't last forever and he needed to have a plan for life after football. Having earned a journalism degree from Texas State University, he quickly found himself in broadcasting and media after retiring from the Denver Broncos. From there, he began doing motivational speaking and authoring. He has published 5 books, three of which tell stories about professional football. Reggie now runs a company helping non-profits with fundraising and still does motivational and keynote speaking. And you can say his life has come full circle as his son will be playing for Texas State University as a walk-on football player in the fall of 2022. It’s 2021, and doing things virtually from home — whether it’s holiday zooms with family, game nights with friends, or religious services — has become the new normal. Last year, we tapped our friend Reggie Rivers at the gala team to get his insight into how nonprofits can maximize virtual galas. We got Reggie back on the line to learn how this model has evolved in the subsequent months, and what the future might hold for “hybrid events.” We also dug into the question of who on your donor file are the most valuable candidates to reach through this channel. In this episode, Lauren welcomes Reggie Rivers, who built his personal brand on the platform of fundraising. After a career in the NFL and journalism, Reggie decided his passion was helping purposeful organizations raise money. Reggie is a former NFL running back who played six seasons for the Denver Broncos. Later, he discovered his true love in life: serving as an auctioneer at charity galas to help nonprofits achieve their fundraising goals. He created The Gala Team, The Virtual Gala Team, and Auction Fundraising Academy out of his love for nonprofit fundraising success and continues to grow the impact these businesses have on the community year after year, one event at a time. In this episode, you'll hear: How Lauren and Reggie Rivers were introduced. His NFL football and journalism background. How The Gala Team was founded. The psychology of creating team-mentality with your audience. The way Reggie trains his auctioneers to make people feel like they're working as a team for a great cause. I don't have the symptoms of racism. I don't use the "n" word. I don't tell racist jokes. I don't discriminate against people. I'm sympathetic to the black movement and I push for equality. But I could still be an asymptomatic carrier of the racism that harms so many black people. Reggie Rivers, former running back for the Denver Broncos and current president of The Gala Team, a benefit auctioneer company, joined us on the #FlipMyFunnel podcast for the fifth in a series of conversations about race. Can you believe it? I am show number 100. And in celebration of this milestone I am bringing back on the first guest I ever had on Life's New Normal, former Denver Running back Reggie Rivers. Reggie is a transformation wonder. While many NFL players are trying what to do next in life after football, Reggie reinvented himself and became an auctioneer. But not just any auctioneer, he became the number one auctioneer in the state of Colorado. He then took his amazing speaking skill set and began another business called Corporate Kick off where he serves business professionals with the intricate parallels between the gridiron and the board room. In expanding his business he pulled in another Bronco, Terrell Davis. Today we explore the transition from football to the Corporate Kick Off and how you can transition in your life as well. About the Host John Register is a long jump silver medalist and American record holder at the 2000 Paralympic Games in Sydney, Australia. His business, Inspired Communications International, LLC, shows business leaders how to "Hurdle Adversity, and create their new normal." Check out his TEDx Talk, "I did Not Overcome Adversity - I Created a New Normal".
