I'm a Canon shooter… I shoot an R6 and an R5. So, I have been curious about the new Canon R1, and a little less so about the R5 Mark II. Still, I had written off watching the announcement, because it was at something like 3am my time… but, I happened to be up anyway so I watched it, and I ended up with some serious opinions on both the new gear and the presentation itself. There's no question these cameras are in demand, even though the R5 Mark II retails for $4,300 and the R1 for a whopping $6,300. The R5 Mark II is already backordered to early Sept, and B&H says the Release Date for the R1 is estimated as Nov 26th. Very few people have had the chance to try out the R5 Mark II and R1, and those that have didn't get much time with them. A few photographers were given pre-release bodies to use at the Olympics, and luckily for us one of them is a friend of the show. I knew Jeff was going to be using the R5 Mark II and R1 at the Paris Olympics, it was semi-public knowledge, so before he left I asked if he would come back on the show to give us his thoughts. He agreed to do a recap, and so today we will dive into his experiences under the real world pressure of photographing the Olympics for Team USA. Jeff has been on the show a few times before. First for the episode Capture the Action, and then to talk about his experiences at the Tokyo Olympics for the show on Real World Use of the Canon R3. On the chance that you didn't see either of those shows, let me introduce you to my friend Jeff Cable... Photographing the Olympics has got to be the pinnacle of a sports photographer's career, and for Jeff Cable it's one he's reached many times, having now photographed the last 8 Olympics for Team USA. I am always amazed by how many photographers either come from, or are in some way involved with, the tech industry. For more than 25 years, Jeff was a marketing executive at companies like Symantec, Magellan, and Micron, but while traveling the world for his corporate job, his interest and passion for photography grew quickly. He left the corporate world in 2016 to dedicate himself full-time to his photography. Since then, Jeff has earned respect around the globe for his creative images, and for sharing his love of photography with others. He's best known for capturing photos for the US Olympic Committee, photographing the last eight Olympic games, in Beijing, Vancouver, London, Sochi, Rio de Janeiro, PyeongChang, Tokyo, and Paris. As an educator, Jeff also leads photo tours where he teaches photo enthusiasts and professionals around the world. He has taught in Africa, Australia, China, Europe, Central and South America, and across the United States, and has upcoming tours, through 2024 and 2025, to San Francisco, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam, Tanzania (African Safari), Japan, Botswana, and Alaska. Jamilah McBryde, the oldest of the three McBryde Sisters who wrestle, is the reigning 143lb Women's Freestyle NAIA National Champion. With that amazing accomplishment comes the opportunity to compete for a spot on the US Women's Olympic Wrestling team. If allowed to attend the Olympic Qualifiers, Jamilah could be the first woman in the world to compete as a wrestler at the Olympic level in hijab. However, Jamilah is being denied the right to compete, and a McBryde sister is once again being robbed of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity - one that she fairly earned. So World Athletics made an announcement this week that will no doubt send ripples throughout other global sporting organisations - and give ammunition to those who claim the Olympics aren't worth the bother anymore - by announcing they would pay track and field gold medallists at the Paris Olympics $50,000 (USD). Understandably, the first question asked was if this move violated the Olympic spirit? This is, after all, the first time in the 128 years of the modern Olympics that athletes will receive prize money for topping the podium. Now, once upon a time when sport was truly amateur, I may have agreed prize money was not in the Olympic spirit. But in 2024, when many professional sports people perform at the Olympics - think golf, tennis and basketball - I'm more inclined to say, why not? Why shouldn't the athletes take a share of the revenue the International Olympic Committee (IOC) distributes to World Athletics? Track and field is a massive drawcard. Surely those who provide the entertainment should benefit from it? They‘re not being paid to train for four years, so nothing changes in the lead up to the Olympics. While it's no doubt nice to get, I doubt it will be the overwhelming motivation for athletes. I'm making an assumption here - I'm no Olympian - but the work and sacrifice it takes to compete against the best at the Olympics is likely enough in itself for most. If you asked New Zealand track and field athletes if they do it for money I'm guessing the answer would be no. If they were about the money they'd do better to get other jobs; one's with a salary. The IOC was blindsided by the announcement and quick to issue a statement reminding us it's up to each sport's governing body to decide how to spend their share of Olympic revenue. Apparently, up to 90 percent of all the IOC's income is redistributed to help athletes and the development of sport. If World Athletics believe they can support their sport and rewards gold medallists, good on them. Many gold medallists are already renumerated for their performances – by either their country, their Olympic and Paralympic Committees, or sponsorships. The US Olympic Committee paid gold, silver and bronze medallists between $37,500 (USD) and $15,000 (USD) at the last games. Some countries offer more. Hong Kong offered roughly $638,000 (USD). Here in NZ, High Performance NZ hands out $60,000 to gold medallists, which is pretty good, and you may also get to help flog some lamb. Some countries offer nothing. So why not share the profits with those who reach the top, as long as the sport in general is also being supported? While there is a list of criticisms about the Olympics, such as how they manage drug cheats, which sports are added or removed, and whether triathletes should have to swim in dodgy waters - I just can't wait for the games to begin on the 26th July. It's almost impossible not to get drawn into the drama that will unfold over the roughly 16 Olympic days. We'll get to share the highest of highs and the lowest of lows, heart-warming underdog stories and heart-breaking missed opportunities. It will give us a wonderful distraction in the heart of winter. Michael Reagan is the eldest son of the former President of the United States, Ronald Reagan. Reagan is also a boat racer with a history dating back to the mid-sixties when he made his mark competing in famous marathon races such as the Colorado River Nine Hour Enduro and the Salton Sea 500. In this episode, Reagan discusses his renowned father and the path that led him to powerboats. Reagan informed us that his original marathon race boat was the first glass boat constructed by Bob Patterson of Patterson Boats. The flatbottom was equipped with a V-drive and a single overhead cam Ford engine built by Holman and Moody. In the early '80s, Reagan collaborated with Larry Smith, the owner of Scarab boats, and initiated a series of endurance runs as fundraisers for charitable organizations. Reagan's most notable achievement was his "Assault on the Mississippi" where he broke the record for the 1,027-mile run from New Orleans to St. Louis, making the trip in 25 hours. With financial backing from sponsors Bud Light, W.R. Grace, Descente Clothing, and Justice Brothers, the run raised $500,000 for the US Olympic Committee. Reagan's 38 ft. Scarab was powered by three of the newly released 430hp V-8 Evinrudes. How do you know which athlete plate to choose for your run training? When we refer to athlete's plates, we are talking about using a nutritional tool which helps you decide what and how much food should be on your plate, related to your training and everyday activities. The concept is to help athletes to choose the correct balance of these food groups to support the level of training they are undertaking.So the base for EASY Training is to eat ¼ plate PROTEIN, ¼ plate whole grains, ½ plate vegetables.For MODERATE training – protein remains the same but whole grains increase to approx. 1/3rd plate with the remainder being vegetables.For HEAVY TRAINING – protein remains the same – ½ plate of grains and ¼ plate vegetables. In my research review this week I share an study comparing to training protocols and measuring their effectiveness for muscle size, strength, power, and body composition.  The two strategies used were block periodization and mixed session periodization.  Which one came out on top?  You will have to listen in to see and how you may want to adjust your training plan. The second part of her talk features the "redemption" of leaning into relationships the way God would call us to AND practical ways to do this.  Laura was the Director of the Pittsburgh Essential Speakers program at Women's Choice Network, Pittsburgh, PA before the COVID-19 pandemic. To keep getting the “Healthy Relationship” message out to teens during COVID, she authored the video curriculum REAL TALK, which is a video series designed to equip young people with the skills to combat relationship challenges they face in adolescence. She is a native Pittsburgher, graduated with a BS in Psychology/Business from Penn State University, and in her more ‘youthful' days, she was a resident archery athlete at the US Olympic Training Center in CO, made the USA World Archery Team, National Team, and was Archery's Athlete Representative to the US Olympic Committee. After raising two daughters and working in the family manufacturing representative business, she continues to be active in her church and follows closely the sexual challenges teens face in today's culture. Worst investment everCam's goal had always been to go to the Olympics. Unfortunately, in 2016 he lost in the finals on a split decision and didn't get to go to Rio for the Olympics. After that, Cam bought a van because he now had to build a career for himself. He started traveling around the country, speaking at schools, and training for the next Olympics. After he'd built a nice business for himself, the US Olympic Committee told him they wouldn't allow him to box now that he had a speaking business. So he had to give up boxing or his speaking business. So Cam flew to Trinidad and Tobago (his dad's home country), got dual citizenship, did one of their Olympic trials, and qualified. But he got suspended. Then in 2020, Cam again won the Olympic trials, and then COVID happened. Then April of this year, he woke up with a detached retina and was told he could never box again. And just like that, his dream of going to the Olympics was dimmed. Lessons learnedThere are ups and downs in investing. And if you can just, if you're willing to ride out the down long enough, you can least come back up to at least break even. When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. These programs usually advise the cutting out or lowering of carbohydrates, the use of fasting techniques or recommend dietary supplements. But what if you could manipulate your diet and food intake to help you increase the amount of fat your body uses as fuel throughout the day? In this podcast, I speak with Exercise Physiologist and Sports Dietitian Bob Seebohar, on how to become more metabolically efficient at using fat as a fuel source. We also discuss macronutrient needs for strength vs endurance athletes, fat burning zones, the best ratio of carbohydrates to protein for blood sugar control, and why carbohydrates are demonized. He spent 23 years working for the Harlem Globetrotters, leading the team's Communications Department. During that time, he arranged two visits to the Vatican and accompanied the Globetrotters players to meet Pope John Paul II and Pope Francis. Previously he had served as VP of Communications for the Continental Basketball Association, working as the league's main spokesperson and liaison to the NBA and USA Basketball. His international experience also included work on the US Olympic Committee press information team at the 1996 Summer Olympic Games and serving as assistant venue press manager for the 2013 World Baseball Classic. As a student-athlete he played football, baseball, and ran track & field in high school, still holding the school record for 400-meter hurdles and being inducted into their Hall of Fame in 2018. This past March he was named the Director of Communications for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix. He is also a professional sports photographer and prior to his new role shot Georgia Tech football and men's and women's basketball.

He is also the team chiropractor for the OL Reign. Dr Kurtz was a member of the sports medicine staff of the PGA TOUR from 2002 to 2011. He holds the distinction of being the first chiropractor ever selected by the US Olympic Committee to an international Paralympic event. He was Team USA's chiropractor to the Parapan American Games in Rio in 2007 and the Paralympic Games in Beijing in 2008.Dr Kurtz was awarded the sports chiropractor of the year in 2014 by the American Chiropractic Association's Sports Council and again in 2015 by the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians becoming the first chiropractor to receive this honor by both organizations.What a joy it was to learn from this legend, and we are sure you will learn as much as we did.

Charlotte West is a well-respected athletic administrator and has been an instrumental advocate for women's sports and a pioneer for Title IX. She served as SIU's Director of Athletics for Women for nearly 30 years, during which time she led the women's golf team to a National Championship and women's basketball to a fifth place finish nationally. She was the first recipient of the Honda Award and the Woman Administrator of the Year, which are both given nationally to women who have achieved great things for women's athletics. She's served on numerous NCAA Committees, and was the Director of National Championships and President of the AIAW, while serving on the US Olympic Committee. She's been inducted into multiple halls of fame - NACDA, the Missouri Valley Conference, and SIU. For her efforts, SIU named their softball facility after her and a room at NCAA HQ has been named in her honor.

Judy Sweet is frequently referred to as a trailblazer and a pioneer in sports - especially for women in sports. She was one of the first female athletic directors in the NCAA to oversee both men's and women's programs at UC San Diego. While at UCSD, she served as the first female membership president of the NCAA from 1991. Sweet has been a major proponent of Title IX, and served as the Title IX representative of the Women Leaders in College Sports board, after having served as president there as well. She was a member of the US Olympic Committee's Task Force on Minorities, and is a co-founder and former president of the board of the Alliance of Women Coaches.For her efforts, she has earned the Honda Award for outstanding achievement in women's athletics, has been inducted into halls of fame at both the University of Wisconsin and UC San Diego, and she recently earned a Lifetime Achievement Award from UC San Diego.

Many people associate the symptoms of these changes with low sleep, high stress, and try to do more training to counter it. None of these are the appropriate types of stress that your body needs in order to mitigate these changes. Women need specific changes to their training routine, along with nutrition, to support their bodies throughout their 40s and beyond. Proper sleep, high-intensity workouts, and polarizing your training in order to recover are key. Change Is a Good Thing Often as women are approaching peri-menopause they are nervous about getting bulky or are told to switch to moderate intensity workouts. Dr. Stacy is here to say that is absolutely not the case. Physiologically women respond better to speed and power, and if anything we should be increasing the intensity of our workouts when we can, and bookending them with softer workouts for our recovery. This is just one example of the necessary ways you need to change your training routine in order to support your changing body and hormones.
