WES BROWNE chats to Scott Blackburn & Paul Burke about his noir THEY ALL FALL THE SAME, (US Amazon link) why it wasn't called Spoon, the Appalachians, North Carolina, pizza and community. They All Fall the Same: Cannabis kingpin Burl Spoon has reigned over the Jackson County area for three decades, building a powerful backwoods empire. But behind a well-run organization, his personal life is crumbling - his daughter can't stay clean; his son has hated him since coming out; and after enduring years of infidelity, his wife is straying too. The only person not on his payroll who still adores him is his six-year-old granddaughter, Chelsea. When his daughter overdoses on heroin laced with fentanyl and one of his employees is murdered, Burl's retaliation against Clovis Begley, the patriarch of the heroin-dealing family involved in both deaths, is inevitable. As Burl's plan spirals into a firestorm of vengeance that threatens the safety of his granddaughter, his drive for revenge conflicts with his longing for redemption. On the brink of losing everything, Burl must find a path between retribution and protecting what's left of his family.Wes Browne has lived and practiced law as a criminal defense attorney, prosecutor, and public defender in Appalachian Kentucky for over twenty-four years. In a special edition guest presenter SCOTT BLACKBURN chats to HENRY WISE about his debut novel HOLY CITY*, MFA programmes, writing-working-family, begin with a million words. Available 6/4 in USA.HOLY CITY After a decade of exile precipitated by the tragic death of his mother, Will Seems returns home from Richmond to rural Southern Virginia, taking a job as deputy sheriff in a landscape given way to crime and defeat. Impoverished and abandoned, this remote land of tobacco plantations, razed forests, and boarded-up homes seems stuck in the past in a state that is trying to forget its complex history and move on.Will's efforts to go about his life are wrecked when a mysterious, brutal homicide claims the life of an old friend, Tom Janders, forcing Will to face the true impetus for his return: not to honor his mother's memory, but to pay a debt to a Black friend who, in an act of selfless courage years ago, protected Will and suffered permanent disfigurement for it.Meanwhile, a man Will knows to be innocent is arrested for Tom's murder, and despite Will's pleas, his boss seems all too content to wrap up the case and move on. Will must weigh his personal guilt against his public duty when the local Black community hires Bennico Watts, an unpredictable private detective from Richmond, to help him find the real killer. It would seem an ideal pairing--she has experience, along with plenty of sand, and Will is privy to the details of the case--but it doesn't take long for either to realize they much prefer to operate alone.Bennico and Will clash as they each defend their untraditional ways on a wild ride that wends deep into the Snakefoot, an underworld wilderness that for hundreds of years has functioned as a hideout for outcasts--the forgotten and neglected and abused--leaving us enmeshed in the tangled history of a region and its people that leaves no one innocent, no one free, nothing sacred.Henry Wise is a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute and the University of Mississippi MFA program. A writer across multiple genres, his poetry has been published in Shenandoah, Radar Poetry, Clackamas, Nixes Mate Review, and elsewhere. When the brothers heist a snake-handling church's money-laundering operation, things go south in a hurry. This part of the north Georgia hills ain't much, just hardscrabble folks trying to get by. It's the perfect place to wash a load of cash -- and an even better place to make your enemies disappear. When Mack goes missing, Marshall cuts a deal with a local crime boss to rescue his brother. Navigating a storm of wild women and a literal nest of vipers, the Dooleys can't trust anyone other than themselves to get out of the mess they've made.A MOURNING SONG: Mack Dooley is a haunted man. After the events of A Violent Gospel left Mack at the bottom of a whiskey bottle, he's back in A Mourning Song, forced to face his demons. When his brother resurfaces, Mack finds himself caught up in a turf war between the Bohannon crime family and a gang of white supremacists. Mack is furious with Marshall, but family is family, after all. Desperate for money, Hudson takes a gig as a bouncer at a dive bar. That's when life delivers him another hook to the jaw: his estranged father, Leland, has been murdered in what appears to be a robbery-gone-bad at his salvage yard, Miller's Pull-a-Part. Soon after his father's funeral, Hudson learns he's inherited the salvage yard, and he returns to his Bible-belt hometown of Flint Creek, North Carolina, to run the business. But the business is far more than junk cars and scrap metal. It was the site of an illegal gun-running ring. And the secrets don't end there; a grisly discovery is made at the yard that thrusts Hudson into the fight of his life. Reeling for answers, Hudson joins forces with his father's former employee, 71-year-old, beer-guzzling Vietnam vet Charlie Shoaf, and a feisty teenage girl, Lucy Reyes, who's fiercely seeking justice for her own family tragedy. With a murderer on the loose and no answers from the local cops, the trio of outcasts launch an investigation. Today, we welcome Scott Blackburn and his debut thriller IT DIES WITH YOU, a story about a washed up boxer who returns to his hometown to take a gig as a bouncer at a dive bar. That's when life delivers him another hook to the jaw: his estranged father, Leland, has been murdered in what appears to be a robbery gone bad at his salvage yard, Miller's Pull-A-Part. It's a searing literary debut that explores the dangerous world of secrets threatening to upend a rural Southern town, and is a read perfect for fans of David Joy and Brian Panowich, who says..."Blackburn writes with the same ferocity as Hammett and James M. Cain." As for this podcast host? I say it's, "Damn good writing." Moreover, I enjoyed the hell out of our time together. Join me and Scott as we talk: writing, querying agents, goal setting, and even babies'n diapers. But mostly, it's the chat about collard greens, fried chicken, Kernersville BBQ, and Cheerwine that brings memories of my childhood flooding back with reckless abandon. As you're sure to hear, my Southern roots return as my childhood accent gets uncovered (dang all those years in radio that squelched my drawl). It's a buncha fun you don't wanna miss! Should you be taxed to fund political campaigns? Seattle has experimented with so-called democracy vouchers, or tax financed campaigns, and the results haven’t been good. Property taxes on businesses and individuals in the Emerald City have been hiked by $3 million per year to finance these campaigns, and the money has almost all gone to incumbents. Other cities, including Washington, D.C., are considering joining Seattle in tax financed campaigns. Scott Blackburn, a senior research analyst at the Center for Competitive Politics, joins the podcast to explain why that’s a bad idea. *All opinions expressed on this podcast do not necessarily reflect the opinion of Americans for Prosperity. Scott Blackburn is Interim Deputy Secretary of Veterans Affairs. Previously Scott led the My VA Task Task Force charged with reorganizing and transforming the Department of Veterans Affairs. Scott is formerly a Partner at McKinsey & Company where he served industrial companies on a wide range of topics related to large business-wide transformational change. Prior to joining McKinsey, Scott served as a Captain in the US Army and worked for the Cleveland Browns (and dreams of one day returning to pro sports to run a franchise). I caught up with Scott at the National Veterans Wheelchair Games and had the opportunity to ask him about how his process of transforming the VA paralleled transforming the lives of veterans through sport.  The National Veterans Wheelchair Games are an outgrowth of the Department of Veterans Affairs’ historic involvement in wheelchair sports. Wheelchair sports had their beginning in the aftermath of World War II, when young disabled Veterans began playing wheelchair basketball in VA hospitals throughout the United States. Interest in wheelchair basketball soon spread to other sports such as track and field, bowling, swimming, and archery, spawning the formation of several associations devoted to new and innovative wheelchair sports. About The Host  John Register is a long jump silver medalist and American record holder from the 2000 Paralympic Games in Sydney, Australia. His business, Inspired Communications International, LLC, shows business leaders how to "Hurdle Adversity, and create their new normal" through his change management experiential keynotes.  Folllow John on all social media platforms at Johnregister.com
