Three-time Paralympic Champion Anna Grimaldi found success in an unexpected area this year. The Dunedin-based athlete was New Zealand's only gold medallist at the 2024 Paris Paralympics, claiming the gold in the T47 200m final. She narrowly missed medalling in the T47 women's long jump, the event she had dominated at the last two Paralympic Games. Grimaldi joined Piney to reflect on her success in Paris, in an unexpected event. “If someone had said ‘you're coming home from Paris with the gold', I would have said' I would have thought it was in the long jump,” she said. “It wasn't really on my radar to be winning the 200.” “It's been a, it's been a crazy, like, a bit whiplash, actually, because obviously the long jump didn't go so well, and then coming away with sort of the gold but like, in a completely different event... it was, it was incredible.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Just three months after Mallory Weggemann was rendered paralyzed after treatment for her back pain, she re-entered her happy place - the pool - and tried to regain not only her sense of strength, but her sense of self.Through this incredible challenge, Mallory learned about resilience, vulnerability, hope and persistence – qualities that not only helped her excel as a Paralympic Champion on the US swim team, but strengths that also helped her push forward during her struggle to conceive with her husband, Jay.While Mallory initially wondered about her ability to get pregnant and have children when she found out about her paralysis, and while others seeing her in a wheelchair may assume the infertility is on ‘her side', the couple faced hurdles due to Jay's Male Factor Infertility – something that is a reality for many men and couples, and a diagnosis too often left out of the storytelling of infertility. Now Jay and Mallory are new parents and believe this tough chapter of navigating infertility, a MicroTESSE surgery to try to extract Jay's sperm, and the experience of doing fertility treatments together ultimately brought them even closer. This episode on finding hope in the face of challenges, how to love your body when you feel it's failing you and why vulnerability is a sign of strength, also features Scott Brown and Lauren Isley from California Cryobank™ who share insight and advice for those facing male factor infertility and may need sperm donation to build their families.Today's episode, in honor of National Infertility Awareness Week 2023, is presented by California Cryobank™, which carefully selects the highest quality sperm donors to give clients the best possible opportunity for a safe and successful pregnancy. It's easy to see Brad as a superhero because he's achieved things about which most of of us just dream: Naval Academy graduate, explosives expert, breaker of a thirty year old world record, gold medalist in his second Paralympic sport, husband, father and Ivy League PhD candidate, but his success is the product of his struggles. Delighted to be joined on the show this week by Tokyo 2021 Paralympic Champion incredible Chris Skelley MBE. Chris has had an incredible career, and he talks through the highs and lows of his judo journey so far, and the opportunities he's taken to support the community around him. Really enjoyed how open Chris was, and it was a real pleasure to speak with him. (And Chris- thank you for being so patient with the interview!)
Following our recent conversation with Team GB's Georgia Wilson, in this episode of The Para Dressage Podcast we talk to Georgia's team mate and coach, Sophie Wells. A regular on Team GB and a multi European, World and Paralympic Champion, Sophie is one of the most respected and recognisable riders in the sport. We reflect on her Tokyo medals (including that now legendary Team gold), her coaching relationship with Georgia, and her background in the sport. And finally, thanks everyone for your support of the podcast. I hope to be a bit more regular in 2022 as we build up to the World Championships. Whatever you do, have a wonderful Christmas and holiday season, and all the very best for the new year.
Two time Paralympic Champion and multiple medal recipient, Canadian Mac Marcoux joins The Next Turn for an engaging conversation. Marcoux, a blind skier with an accomplished career, is currently gearing up for the 2022 Paralympics in Beijing. Marcoux skis and competes alongside his guide, Tristan Rodgers, who also joins us for the discussion. Together, they give us an in-depth description of Rodgers' role, describe the language they use to communicate effectively on and off the hill, and detail the level of trust required for success. Additionally, Marcoux reveals his goals for the future and the legacy he wishes to leave behind. As always, Martin, Jeff and Cara share their “Thoughts of the Day''.

"I feel like if we could parallel in sports with Paralympics and marathons and wheelchair racing, we can also help parallel disabilities in communities. A lot of our idols come from sports figures. We can really give back to our own communities and make sure people with disabilities have that chance to get an education and hold a job. A lot of athletes who compete in the Paralympics go home and try to get a job and they can't. That's not only a U.S. issue. It's a global issue. That's the important part. I feel like if we can make that change in sport, we can make that change in the community. It's an important responsibility, especially if you're a current athlete, to give back to the sport. Previous athletes, who were once my competitors but then retired, they did the same thing. They pushed the sport along the way." I had the opportunity to record with Tatyana McFadden the day before she won her 24th major marathon at the Chicago Marathon. She got on a plane and headed to compete at the Boston Marathon, where she made the podium with a runner-up finish. In our pre-race conversation, we talked about all things Paralympics, her role as a producer and star in the Netflix documentary "Rising Phoenix" and her advocacy work to change the way people think about disability, diversity and human potential. He lost his eyesight in Afghanistan 2011, was a London 2012 swimming champion exactly 12 months later and then, after two highly successful Paralympic Games in the pool, made the switch to para triathlon. Having doubted whether he should even try and qualify for the hugely competitive visually impaired start list at Tokyo, it all came together on the day, winning gold with guide Greg Billington to justify the sacrifices he made along the way and plant a seed for a potential Paralympic journey that just may reach all the way to LA 2028.
The new Paralympic Champion in the visually impaired (PTVI) category of para triathlon, the incredible Susana Rodriguez spent 2020 on the front line of Spain's fight against the pandemic, caring for patients while wrestling her burning desire to win the biggest race of them all. She explains the personal battle she fought to ready herself mentally and physically, the incredible importance of the unique blind-athlete-and-guide relationship and the 'emotional and physical bomb' that was competing at Tokyo 2020.
Matt Levy is one of Australia's most accomplished sports people. His swimming career began at just 13, when he started training for the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens. Now, almost 21 years later, Matt is a seven time paralympic medalist - and one of Australia's most decorated athletes. Matt competes in the S7 category. Swimmers in this class have use of their arms and trunk. They have limited leg function or are missing a leg or parts of both legs. Matt was born 25 weeks premature, has cerebral palsy and is vision impared. To have excelled as he has, it is safe to say, Matt is one of Australia's all-time greatest athletes. Karen Darke tells me about being injured aged 21 in a mountain climbing accident and how she overcame her fear of heights following this accident to eventually climb El Capitan, as a paraplegic using just her arms. She shares with me her story from first riding a handcycle to becoming a Paralympic champion in Rio in 2016, helped, along with a lot of training, motivation and hard work, by an understanding of how to train her brain and reframe negative thoughts in order to manifest a positive outcome. She tells me about her trip when she cross-country skied across the Greenland ice cap where the challenge lay not only in the physical exertion for a month, but in managing her disability under such extreme conditions. She credits being part of a team with a common objective as a huge part of what makes each adventure particularly special.Karen has done a lot of work in personal development and brain training and shared some fascinating insights about how to combat negative self-talk and achieve goals. She works as a transformational coach and, alongside training for the next paralympic games, is passionate about helping others remove blocks to success and reaching their potential through helping them train their brains.
