Here's a fact: For many years, I didn't know that our money mindset has a direct relationship with how powerful we feel and how we move through our professional and personal lives.I didn't get the connection, and I have been in financial services for over 25 years. After I dove into all things on leadership, self-improvement, and energetic management, I learned that there is a positive correlation between our money, speaking up, and the energy associated with feeling powerful as a woman. If we feel good about our money, we will speak up more. We will feel more confident. We will make powerful choices. We will be braver at work and at home.My guest today, Aja Evans, is the first financial therapist I have interviewed. I have interviewed financial coaches before, but not financial therapists. After learning more about Aja's important work, I was excited to dive into this discussion!During my conversation with Aja, we chatted about:The story behind Aja's financial awakeningWhat financial therapy is and how it is different than financial coachingWhat the thoughts, feelings, and attitudes are behind someone who may need a financial awakening of their ownWhat is the story behind people that are trying to keep up with the Joneses? What about money hoarders? What is the story there? Her book, Feel Good Finance: Untangle Your Relationship with Money for Better Mental, Emotional, and Financial Well-Being.Aja provides an overview of her freebie to Your Guide to Getting Financially Naked

Explore the impact of generational financial trauma on millennials, how social media amplifies it and ideas for healing. Personal Finance Nerd Tiffany Curtis delves into the complex topic of generational financial trauma, particularly its impact on millennials, with two special guests: Aja Evans and Rahkim Sabree. Aja Evans is a licensed mental health counselor and financial therapist, and Rahkim Sabree is a certified financial education instructor and author. Wrapping up the episode, the hosts stress the importance of financial literacy while discussing its limitations in closing racial and gender wealth gaps. In this conversation, you'll learn about: generational financial trauma, millennials, social media echo chambers, marginalized groups, how people define financial success, racial and gender wealth gaps, mental health counseling, financial therapists, financial education instructors, reparations, trauma healing, financial strain, and distorted financial perceptions. Whether we realize it or not, many of us could benefit from some financial therapy. In this episode, Kimberlee talks with financial therapist Aja Evans about the work she's doing, the inspiration behind it, and the practical advice she has for women about navigating their finances. Aja breaks down the relationship between our money and our self esteem, shares her top tips for navigating prenups, explains how you can get yourself out of a shame spiral, and much more! Episode Recap: Today we're talking with Financial Therapist Aja Evans (0:58) What is a financial therapist? (1:58) Can you tell us about your financial awakening? (5:34) Self esteem directly impacts our relationship with money (9:27) If you're struggling with a self esteem spiral, take a pause (13:18) Rewrite the narratives that aren't serving you (21:19) Do you have any tips for navigating prenups? (32:19) What trends are you noticing in financial therapy? We are trying to get ourselves out of a place of discomfort and into comfort as quickly as possible, and a lot of times that is not the best strategy for your finances. So looking at taking the breath, making the plan, and then deciding how you're going to execute and what you want that to look like. And be mindful of what emotional or financial triggers might come up for you that may cause you to spiral again.”“Have the conversation. Be awkward about it. Trip over yourself when you're talking to each other. But if you cannot have these conversations about money, if you disagree or don't disagree, we got other things. Because life is going to come at you hard and fast, and if you can't talk to this person who you've decided you want to commit the rest of your life to, it's going to be really difficult. It's going to be very, very difficult, and we don't need it to be that hard.”

Today, Ed is joined by Aja Evans, licensed mental health counselor specializing in financial therapy based in New York City. Aja shares how her own financial awakening led her to seek out spaces in which she can express her money-related dreams, anxieties, and challenges with others who are going through the same issues as she. It was this gradual embrace of the wonders and complexities of money and mental health that led her down the path of becoming a financial therapist. In her words: “I love getting into the nitty gritty about feelings and money, and making sure people don't feel alone.” Aja also gives her thoughts on how the lack of representation for minority groups in the world of finance is directly tied to the money-related struggles within many individuals in these underrepresented communities. She talks about how we can bridge the gap between these communities, between generations, and even between couples who often struggle with financial intimacy—to appreciate each other's perspectives and lived experiences due to radically disparate backgrounds. Finally, Aja dives deep into the often-overlooked factors that impact financial well-being in marriage, from money to motivations to trust. Key Topics: About Aja and her “financial awakening” (01:20) Why we need community if we want to improve our financial well-being (03:30) The connection between representation and financial well-being (09:28) Building bridges between communities (15:34) Money and marriage (22:16) Why intimacy matters (27:46) Rebuilding lost trust in a relationship (36:35) Resources: Aja on Instagram @ajaetherapy Aja on TikTok @ajaetherapy Aja's Website: AjaEvansCounseling.com Connect With Healthy Love and Money: Schedule your free 30-Minute Discovery Call About Therapy-Informed Financial Planning™. According to a recent survey conducted by Bankrate dot com, Americans' biggest financial regret is not saving enough for emergencies. In fact, 20% of respondents gave this answer - even topping the reigning top response related to saving too little for retirement. And when broken down further, older millennials (36 percent) were more than twice as likely than baby boomers (14 percent) to say they regret not having a strong enough emergency fund. And when asked what they intend to do with their money going forward, 26% of respondents said they will save more for emergencies, while another 21% said they will spend less.Of course, this poll was administered in the shadow of the Covid-19 pandemic and all of the financial disruption that has come along with it. But it got my attention that when asked about financial regrets, the answer had nothing to do with saving for the long term. It was about the here and now.In this episode, Malcolm sits down with Aja Evans, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor who specializes in financial therapy, to discuss the concept of financial regret, how to recognize it when you feel it, and how to move past it once you do.
