In today's sermon, Pastor Blake continues the series "I Am Jesus in His Own Words" by focusing on the fourth I Am statement: "I am the good shepherd." He emphasizes that through this declaration, Jesus identifies Himself as God and expresses His deep love and commitment to His followers, illustrated through five promises: that the good shepherd owns, knows, calls, cares for, and gathers His sheep. Pastor Blake explains how our recognition of Jesus' goodness should transform our lives and urges us to listen for His voice leading us, even when it challenges our comfort. Ultimately, he invites us to respond to the good shepherd's call for deeper intimacy, surrender, and active participation in His mission to gather those who are lost.

In the beginning, before time as you know it, there was I – the Unnameable, the All-Encompassing. I existed in a state beyond words, a boundless expanse of consciousness, an ocean of potential. It was in this timeless realm that the universe was conceived, a thought born from the depths of my being, blossoming into a cosmic dance of stars and galaxies. Why, you might wonder, did I, the Infinite, choose to manifest in the finite? It was not out of necessity, for what need could the Eternal have? It was a choice born of love, an expression of my endless creativity. In dividing myself, I became the elements, each atom resonating with my essence. I became the mountains, the rivers, the winds, and the skies, each reflecting facets of my infinite nature. In the heart of every sacred text, in the essence of every spiritual tradition, lies a profound and universal truth: the awakening of God within us. This book is not just an exploration of a concept; it's an invitation to a transformative realization, one that has echoed through the ages in the whispers of mystics and the proclamations of prophets. It is the idea that God, the Divine Presence, is not solely an external force but an intrinsic part of our very being. To some, the notion that God is awakening within us might seem audacious, perhaps even blasphemous. But this is not a claim of human arrogance; it is, instead, a humble acknowledgment of the divine spark that resides in each of us. This is not about elevating ourselves to the status of the Supreme; it is about recognizing the sacredness within, a divine essence that many religious texts and spiritual teachings have hinted at, sometimes openly, sometimes in veiled language.

Unsurprisingly, Lutheran Service Book contains a substantial collection of “Trust” hymns — and also unsurprisingly, many of those hymns are dearly loved by Lutheran ladies.   In this Hymn Sing with Sarah episode, Sarah tells the stories of over a dozen different trust-based hymns, a list informed by listener polls conducted earlier in the Lutheran Ladies' Lounge Facebook discussion group.   Lyrics featured include “Lord, Thee I Love with All My Heart (LSB 708), “Jesus Savior, Pilot Me (LSB 715), “Jesus Lead Thou On” (LSB 718), “How Firm a Foundation” (LSB 728), “I Am Trusting Thee, Lord Jesus” (LSB 729), “O God, Our Help in Ages Past” (LSB 733), “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” (LSB 739), and “I Am Jesus' Little Lamb” (LSB 740).  “These hymns confess what God promises to provide for us,” says Sarah. “They talk about how God will provide for us, how he forgives our sins, rescues us from death and the devil, gives us eternal life, and promises to be always with us. They also confess that nothing can separate us from God. We are His children, and literally nothing can take that away from us. There's a reason they are favorites.”  Stay tuned at the end for a 2021 performance of “Lord, Thee I Love with All My Heart” by the Concordia Seminary Choir (including Sarah Gulseth) with Dr. Jim Marriott on the organ. The first reading tells us of Saul going out in the world to capture Jews believing in Jesus. He is very aggressive in his work. He hunts down people belonging to this new way. We see Heaven send a warning to the heart of one who is trying to root out error. Curiously, we see Saul who is so concerned to protect the faith of Israel. However, he misses the point! It is the God who Saul follows Who ends up correcting him. Saul went out in the world on this mission. Much like the Apostles went out in the world on their mission. But their missions were indeed different. Hear more within the Homily! On this day, we celebrate the conversion of Saul. Saul forever changes on this day. He is struck down. The light overwhelms Saul. Struck down by light. Saul does not feel a blow. He is struck down be a light that is so beautiful, he cannot stand. He is overwhelmed. Saul becomes blind. Out of the light comes The Voice of the Lord. Saul tries to serve the Lord before this encounter. Yet, he does not recognize Him . . . he does not recognize the Lord. A heart, so faithful to the Lord, needs to learn the sound of the Lord's voice. Hear more about this lesson for us! I Am Jesus, Whom you persecute. Understand what happens! Jesus identifies Himself with His Church. Note! Saul is not out to chain Jesus! He is out to persecute His followers . . . the Church! Why is that important? Hear more in the Homily! St. Paul teaches us a lesson! In persecuting the Church, you persecute and reject Jesus. As intensive as Saul's relationship with Jesus is, it is not merely private. Jesus, the I AM: Jesus taught that everyone who sins is a slave to sin. But the truth of his teaching brings freedom. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. Authentic disciples remain in the truth of Jesus' teaching and are set free by the truth of Jesus' identity — the great I AM. Recorded on Nov 19, 2023, on John 8:31-59 by Pastor David Parks. Finding Life in Jesus' Name is a sermon series on the gospel according to John in the Bible. Have you ever felt unsatisfied with your life? Or, even when things were going well, something was still missing? Many people sense there must be something more. But what?? John, one of the closest friends of Jesus, believed that Jesus came into the world so that we may have life and have it to the full. Jesus turned John's life upside down, and John claims this new life — marked by God's power, presence, and purpose — is available for all who believe. Sermon Transcript All year, we're working our way through the gospel according to John in a series called Finding Life in Jesus' Name. And today, we're finishing John chapter 8. And we're considering the root of all the “I AM” statements of Jesus in John's gospel. If you've been with us so far, you might realize we've covered several of the “I AM” statements of Jesus. There are actually seven metaphorical “I AM” statements in John's gospel. So far, we've seen Jesus claim, “I am the bread of life.” and “I am the light of the world.” Well, today, Jesus claims to be “I AM.” What does that mean? Why is that so significant? It's actually one of the most significant claims of Jesus in all of the Bible. If you have a Bible/app, please take it and open it to John 8:31. John 8:31–36 (NIV), “31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” 33 They answered him, “We are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?” 34 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to [remains/abides in] it forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” Ok, let's pause here. So last week, we saw the interaction between Jesus and a large crowd of people who were in the temple in Jerusalem for the Festival of Tabernacles as well as the Pharisees and religious leaders there. And Jesus made the big claim to be the light of the world. And we saw the division his teaching was causing as some believed him while others didn't understand his teaching or flat-out rejected it. In a similar way, our passage for today starts out with another big claim: that if you hold to (or remain in or abide in) his teaching, you are not only truly his disciples, but then you'll know the truth, and the truth will set you free. This is a very positive statement, right? Who doesn't want to be free? But instead of taking Jesus at his word, the people need some clarification. What do you mean, Jesus, that we will be set free? Do we need to be set free? Now, on one level, the Jewish people did indeed need to be set free. They needed political and social freedom from the Roman Empire. And the Romans were just the latest in a long line of foreign rulers. So, the people here must not be referring to political freedom. More likely, they mean moral or spiritual freedom. “We are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?” And it is here that Jesus articulates the main problem with the world and with every one of us: “Very truly I tell you [meaning, pay attention, this is important], everyone who sins is a slave to sin.” One of the problems with sin is that it isn't just particularly tempting for us or even harmful to us and others; it's that sin is enslaving. When we sin,

Who will listen to My voice, My words, when I am crying out? I have pleaded with My children, and yet, so many are far away that they do not recognize My voice that is intricately weaved into the soul of mankind. I come to you in love, I come to you in warning that you must have greater vigilance at what is happening all around you. I tell My children it is time to seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit so that you are able to discern all that comes in your path. My children, history is all around you while you are also living out Revelation. [1] Take heed, take heed to the Gospel message and live it. I have come to nurture and teach you as I am calling all of you to be counted amongst the saints in Heaven by living your life in witness and example. I tell My children that it is a time of reform. Come to the fountain of My Mercy and do not shackle yourself to your past errors, rather, embrace My Love, unite your suffering to Mine, and be My witness in this broken world. It is through your love, forgiveness, and obtaining the graces of heaven that will begin to heal this world. Recognize evil for what it is and do not take hold of it by complying out of fear. Do not allow the enemy to elevate himself through you, rather in greater humility you will defeat all of his deception. Go forth in prayer, go forth in adoration to your Heavenly Father, who through his Son, Jesus, gave you this life, this mission to one day be united with the Trinity for all eternity. Now go forth, for I Am Jesus and My mercy and justice will prevail.

Through the reading and studying of John's Gospel, we get insight into who Jesus is through the statements that He made about Himself. He said "I AM the bread of life..." "I AM the light of the world..." "I AM the door..." "I AM the good shepherd..." "I AM the way, the truth, and the life..." "I AM the true vine..." "I AM the resurrection...." These statements of Jesus, found in the book of John, are called the "I AM" statements, and they recall the Lord God's self-identification in Exodus 3:14. Check out the first sermon in the insightful, seven week sermon series called "I AM: Jesus in his own words," we will explore these "I AM" statements found in John's Gospel. Every statement we will study in this series is accompanied by an event or miracle, and an explanation in Scripture of how Jesus is the better version of that miracle. As we study John 6:22-71, we examine Jesus' statement - "I am the Bread of Life," and we are reminded that we will keep being hungry if we continue going to the world to be satisfied.

We're continuing in our message series called, “I Am Jesus.” Regardless of how long you've been a Christian, regardless of whether or not you are a Christian, it's possible for someone to say, “I know ABOUT Jesus.” But knowing about Jesus is not what matters most in your life. What matters most is whether or not you KNOW him? Don't miss that. The essential question isn't do you know ABOUT Jesus; it's do you KNOW Jesus. “Give unto the LORD, O you mighty ones, Give unto the LORD glory and strength. Give unto the LORD the glory due to His name; Worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness. The voice of the LORD is over the waters; The God of glory thunders; The LORD is over many waters. The voice of the LORD is powerful; The voice of the LORD is full of majesty." Yesterday we talked about the “Awesome Voice of God”. Today we want to think about the “Wonderful Voice of Jesus”. In Psalm 29 the Voice of the LORD is magnetified and God is glorified. His voice is powerful and full of majesty! When we come to the New Testament, we find that the Voice of the LORD is none other than the Lord Jesus Christ. We read in John 1:1-3, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.” To have a “word” you need to have a “voice” that speaks that word. In the beginning was the “Voice of God” and His Word spoke the world and everything made into existence. Then John writes in John 1:14, “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” John and the disciples and hundreds of others who were alive at that time, saw Jesus and beheld His glory as He lived a sinless life, heal the sick, gave sight to the blind, walked on water, fed the hungry, and raised the dead! The same glory of God that we read about in Psalm 29. When people came to John the Baptist and ask him if he was the Messiah, he replied and said, “No, I am only a voice crying in the wilderness to prepare the way for Him.” And basically, he went on to say that the Voice of Jesus was the greater Voice that would bring transformation to people through His life and the baptism of the Holy Spirit. In John 10:3-4, Jesus proclaims that when the True Shepherd comes that the sheep will hear His Voice and that they will know His voice and they will follow Him. Jesus repeats this in John 10:27: “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” How do you know if you are genuinely a follower of Jesus? You both hear and know His Voice and will be following Him. The Apostle John would later write in 1 John 1:1-4, “That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life-- the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested to us-- that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ. And these things we write to you that your joy may be full.” Twice in these verses John says, “we heard” Him. John fully recognized Who Jesus was and is! He is the “Word of life”! And John invites us to know and receive Him like he did so that we can also have salvation and fellowship with Him and with His Father! In Acts 9:1-22, Saul was on the road to Damascus to persecute believers and had an experience with the Voice of Jesus that changed everything. He heard a “voice”, and when he asked who the voice was he heard the voice say, “I Am Jesus….”. And Saul's immediate response was, “Lord, what do you want me to do?” Today we have the Spoken Voice, the Written Voice, and the Living Voice of God all in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ. And He is still saying to all of us today, “Come unto Me all you who are burdened and heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Do you hear and know His Voice? Are you following Him? God bless!

October 16, 2022 John 15:1-5 If you were to take a poll and ask a simple question, “Who is Jesus?” you would probably get a multitude of answers. In fact, if you asked a thousand people their opinions about Jesus, you would probably get a thousand responses. In the end, what really matters is not what other people say about Jesus, but what Jesus says about Himself. This is why we are so excited to start our series called “I Am: Jesus in His Own Words.” In this series, we'll look at seven statements in the Gospel of John where Jesus says, “I am.” We will listen in on several different conversations in which Jesus makes very specific, far-reaching, and even outrageous “I am” statements about himself. Next Steps: • Identify some ways that help you stay connected to God. • Engage in an after-dinner conversation about transactional love versus unconditional love. • Love someone without any strings attached.
