The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place.” Luke 24:18-21 God’s Promises and Our Perception In 1928, scientist Alexander Fleming returned from vacation to find that one of his petri dishes had been contaminated with mold. It looked like a failure and ruined work. But when Fleming looked closer, he noticed something remarkable. Around the mold, the bacteria had died. What looked spoiled was actually powerful. That mold, penicillin, would go on to save hundreds of thousands of lives during World War II and millions more in the years that followed. Three days after Jesus’ death, two disciples were walking away from Jerusalem. With their faces downcast and their hearts full of disappointment. They said, “We had hoped…” They had hoped for redemption, freedom, and restoration for Israel. But Jesus had been crucified. To them, the cross looked like failure, like God’s plan had been ruined. But the cross wasn’t failure; it was success. There, Jesus satisfied God’s wrath. There, he paid for every sin. And three days later, Jesus proved it with an empty tomb. We know the feeling of having hope disappointed. We hoped the diagnosis would be different. We hoped the relationship would heal. He hoped the door would open. Sometimes God’s work in our lives looks like a ruined plan. But the cross teaches us it is better to trust God’s promises than our perceptions. What looked like defeat became salvation. What looked like death became life. In Jesus, your greatest problem has already been cured. Prayer: Lord Jesus, when plans don’t match my expectations, help me trust your promises. Remind me that your cross is never failure, but always my cure. Amen. Daily Devotions is brought to you by WELS. Luke 24:13-35 - On the Road to Emmaus 13 Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. 14 They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. 15 As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; 16 but they were kept from recognizing him. 17 He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?” They stood still, their faces downcast. 18 One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?” 19 “What things?” he asked. “About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. 20 The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; 21 but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place. 22 In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning 23 but didn't find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. 24 Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus.” 25 He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself. 28 As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if he were going farther. 29 But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them. 30 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. 32 They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” 33 They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together 34 and saying, “It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.” 35 Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread.

Over the last couple of weeks, we have had an up-close glimpse of multiple encounters Jesus experienced. Each one leaving us with questions we should ask in our own lives… Don't you just love a bunch of questions this early in the morning!!! First with the Pharasees which should cause us to pause and ponder if there is any truth in us that reveals hypocrisy vs a real trust and faith in Jesus? And then as a result of His encounter with Mary of Magdala – are we able to say I have met him and I am different? Now this morning we are going to add a few more questions? I invite you to write these down and ponder them as we look at our next encounter. Do I truly want to encounter Jesus? Do I want the hope of Jesus in my life? Do I deeply believe Jesus will meet me where I am? Luke 24 beginning in verse 13 Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles[a] from Jerusalem. 18 One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?” “What things?” he asked. BUT NOT JESUS! Lets PRAY Dear Jesus, I need you. I know you are my hope. Open my eyes and let me see you! Amen In my early career, I was a nursing home administrator – locally at Life Care Center (that is actually what brought us to the valley) I believe and know fully that God allowed that in my life to grow me in deeper dependence and knowledge of him. That is a whole other message. One of the hardest challenges of that job is staffing (anyone relate) The responsibility to the residents and staff was tremendous – taking me often to the point of desperation. I remember one particular day that my regional director had stopped by and on this visit he had his elementary aged son with him. When they arrived, I had been sitting at my desk praying and seeking the Lords help for how exactly we would meet the need for CNAs that day. As we talked – the little guy offered to pray for me. He prayed for a simple prayer or please provide today. The heart and faith of that young man was the encouragement, an encounter I needed to continue to trust in that moment. Let's look at Jesus encounter with 2 disciples on the road to Emmaus Right before we see our next encounter in Luke, we learn that the stone is rolled away! Jesus has risen and the women who discovered the empty tomb are being hit with doubt and disbelief by the disciples as they share this indescribable news.  28 As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if he were going    farther. 29 But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them.  Jesus shows up and meets us where we are.   Jesus shows up and meets us where we are.  He is worthy of our hope JESUS SHOWS UP UNEXPECTED WAYS PLACES “ALL THAT CRYING I DID THIS MORNING” 2 BAGS OF GROCERIES MATTHEW 25 PHARISEES- JESUS ALWAYS ENCOUNTERED THEM  MARY MAGDALENE- FIRST TO HEAR HIM   ALWAYS EXISTING WITH THE FATHER-  GO BACK TO BEGINNING HOW HE APPROACHES US  SCRIPTURE GENESIS 3:6 6. “WHEN THE WOMAN SAW THAT THE FRUIT OF THE TREE WAS GOOD FOR FOOD AND PLEASING TO THE EYE, AND ALSO DESIRABLE FOR GAINING WISDOM, SHE TOOK SOME AND ATE IT. What will you do? 31Our forefathers ate the manna in the desert; as it  is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.' “  32Jesus said to them, “I tell you the truth, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” 34“Sir,” they said, “from now on give us this bread.” 35Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty. 36But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. 37All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away.   This food won't keep your body alive. It won't keep your stomach from growling or your throat from being thirsty. This food isn't designed to sustain the body, it's designed to sustain the soul. It's designed to help you be in constant communion with the One who created you, and the One who redeemed you. This food is to nourish the soul. MATTHEW 26:26-28 26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.” 27 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. 28 This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. MAYBE YOU JUST WANT TO PRAY TODAY YOU NEED AN ENCOUTNER WITH HIM A FRESH ENCOUNTER WITH HIM- YOU COULD ASK SOMEONE TO COME AND PRAY - OR WE HAVE A FEW PEOPLE WHO WILL PRAY WITH YOU/FOR YOU

Transcription (Transcribed by TurboScribe) Joan and Gary, boy, it’s good to see you. It’s just, I’m saying to Gary, it seems that retirement kind of don’t have money for her. It is so good to see you, Joan and Gary. They’re all over the place now. They’re, they’re, yeah, it is just so cool to see you this morning. I’m always happy to see folks. They come back and they come visit. Did so many wonderful things with you over the years, and it’s always a blessing to look up and see. As I, as I prayed in my prayer, please continue to pray for Amira and her family. Amira was in Kuwait when the bombing started. Her sister passed away and she was there. She and her mother, they were both out, and Amira’s back in Canada. So with God’s grace, we’re happy about that. Got really sad news this, this week. My first colleague in my first congregation was murdered in his house this past week, and that’s just horrendous. He and the guy who worked in the garden for him seemed to have had a little moment, and the next thing his wife heard, someone yelled, and she saw the guy wash his hands and blood coming off him when she came out. Her husband was, was not there. So really sad, sad moment. Pray for their family as well. Not, not the kind of things that we want to hear. We need to pray for, for one another. Thank you for the amazing words that we can read together this morning and spend a few moments in. And I always pray, Lord, may we see Jesus and only Jesus, but in this one, we are really just going to see Jesus in action. And what a moment. Thank you. We wait in expectation. In your name we pray, Lord Jesus. Amen. Going to Luke chapter 14. And thank you, Grace, for getting those pictures on there. Much appreciated. Luke 14, going to start verse 13. Now that same day, two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them. But, and always this but thing, but they were kept from recognising him. He asked them, what are you discussing together as you walk along? They stood still, their faces downcast. One of them named Cleopas, and we think most scholars will say that the other person that was with him was his wife, Mary. One of them, Cleopas, asked him, are you the only one visiting Jerusalem? Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days? What things, Jesus asked. About Jesus of Nazareth, they replied. He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him. And here’s an important but, that we had hoped, we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it’s the third day since all this took place. In addition, some of our women amazed us. Actually, it’s a very bad word that they use in Greek here, Existemi, which actually means some of the women lost their minds. Some of our women lost their minds. They went to the tomb early this morning, but they didn’t find his body. And then they came and told us that they’d seen a vision of angels who said he was alive. And then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the woman had said, but they did not see Jesus. And so the empty tomb. He said to them, how foolish you are. How slow to believe all the prophets have spoken. Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory? And beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the scriptures concerning himself. As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if he were going farther. But they urged him strongly, stay with us for it’s nearly evening. The day is almost over. So he went in to stay with them. And when he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognised him and he disappeared from their sight. They asked each other, were not our hearts burning within us as he talked with us on the road and opened the scriptures to us? They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the 11 and those with them assembled together and saying, it’s true. The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon. And then the two told what had happened on the way and how Jesus was recognised by them when he broke. What a beautiful story. So we, we meet these two followers of Jesus on their way to Emmaus, but they’re not just on their way towards Emmaus. They’re also on their way away from Jerusalem. And you can hear this in their voices that they need to put this behind them and leave it there and just get away from it. Verse 21 will say it so clearly, the disappointment, the disillusionment, this, this departure away from hope when it says, but we had hoped that this Jesus was the one. We had hoped that he was the one who was going to change everything. We had hoped, but hope has died. And so we turn our backs and we leave and we go to Emmaus. As I read that and I was, I was writing and I’m saying, Lord, help me. How, what do I say? How do I preach such a well-known text? I’m sitting there and I wrote, it kind of makes me feel when you think of them, of this world in which we are living right now, it’s a mess. You don’t know what you’re going to find when you wake up the next morning, whether there’s another war, whether this war is going to escalate. We don’t know whether there’s another tariff coming and whether the oil is going up and whether food is going to, through the roof that we cannot pay for that. We’re so uncertain of ourselves. People are, are so, if you look at the world, ready, we’re just ready to bite each other. And it’s kind of a scary place, but we had hoped. And I said to myself, so, so when you write that down, Aubrey, you’re, you’re not a negative person because I’m not. So, so what is the next thing that you write? And the next thing I wrote down is the question, so how do we, as those who follow Christ Jesus, how do we live in this kind of world? What kind of pictures do we paint with our words when we speak to each other? Because I can stand here this morning and I can send you out those doors so negative that you don’t want to come back next week. What are the kind of words that we paint? What do we paint with our words when we talk to each other, when we are there in our conversations at school, at home, at work? What pictures do we paint with our actions, the way in which we treat each other, the way in which we live in this world? What pictures do we paint for ourselves with our thoughts? No one else can see, but I can. We paint these pictures. Are there pictures of hope? Hope in this Lord Jesus that one week ago we stood in this place and we were celebrating. Jesus Christ is risen today and you said, amen, He is risen indeed. Are there pictures of hope in that risen Lord Jesus Christ that sits on His throne and is in control of this world, even when this world sometimes, like now, feels a little out of control? Do we do the but or do we paint pictures of hope? Because there is a world out there that needs those who love Jesus Christ and know Him as their Lord and their Saviour and the King of this world and the King of their lives to say that, to live that, to show that. What pictures are we painting or are they maybe pictures of hopelessness? Let’s try and answer for ourselves as we walk through scripture. So there’s a little background. Now let me take you back. So these two are walking and the next thing Jesus walks with them and here’s the first little surprise. Jesus does not give up on people who are hopeless doubters. And you’re saying, Aubrey, it’s not a surprise. We know that. You know that, but context. Did you see what day it was? Verse 13 said, on that same day. Which was the same day? Verse 1 tells us, early on that first day of the week. It was the Sunday when Jesus rose from the dead. Wouldn’t you think that He had come, He had done His work, He died on the cross, went into the grave, grave was opened, that now Jesus is in heaven with God and He’s being celebrated by all His angels and they’re singing and dancing and they’re hallelujah and He’s taking up His throne and now He’s sitting there on His throne ruling this world. Wouldn’t you expect that’s what would have happened? Where do you find Him? He’s on the road with two hopeless doubting. That’s the kind of Lord that we serve. Not the Lord that puts Himself in some throne somewhere and disappears, but the Lord who walks with hopeless doubting. As you see, here’s the thing about Jesus. He didn’t just tell the stories or call them parables, whatever you want to call them. Didn’t just tell the stories, He lived the stories. And He’s just living one of those stories right now, Luke 15. Who knows what that is? You can get a coffee if you can tell me what’s Luke 15. My coffee’s safe. What have I done in 25 years? You don’t know what’s in Luke 15? It’s easy. It’s a story about two boys, 10 coins, and a hundred sheep. Remember the story now? And what was the story about the hundred sheep? Shepherd had a hundred sheep and one got lost. And what did he do? He left the 99 and he went for the one. And two were walking away in hopelessness from Jerusalem to go sit in Emmaus. And Jesus goes after the two. Because you see, here’s the thing about Jesus. He does not like to see the backs of His children turned on Him. Maybe the Hebrew word for repentance is even more beautiful. The Hebrew word for repentance is shuv, which means to turn around. And that’s what Jesus wants. He does not want to see the back. He’s saying, turn around. Look at me. Look at me. I want to be there for you. And I ask you, when you go through those difficult times and those times in your own life when you doubt, because we all end up there every now and then, when you feel like hope is kind of a distant, distant thing, when life can sometimes deal you some cards that are not the greatest cards in the world, what do you do? Don’t walk away from Jerusalem because Jesus got your back. He’s got your back. He’s there for you. He wants you to turn around and He wants to look into your eyes, even those eyes that are saying, I doubt right now, Lord Jesus. I’m not so sure. He wants to look right into them. He wants to see your face, even if the tears are running down your cheeks, because how difficult and how tough it is. He wants to hold you and love you. He does not want to see your back. He’ll make time to come. He didn’t just scoot off. He knew I needed to go talk to Cleopas and Mary. I needed to be there with them. And He’s going to be there with you when you walk sometimes on your own road. By the way, did you see they went back to Jerusalem? They thought they could walk away, but he doesn’t. Then the second thing happens. Let me take you back to the story. So now he starts this conversation with them. That’s how Jesus works. And as I was writing that, I thought, man, if it was me, I wouldn’t have done that. These two walking away, I would have done something to get them back. I would have walked and said, could I have the water bottle, please? And can I have a cup? And I would have poured some water in that cup. And I would have said, have a sip. And I would have done a miracle. And they would have drank some wine. And I would have said, gotcha. Why are you doubting? Why are you not hoping? But Jesus doesn’t do that, does he? What does Jesus do? He asks them, so get it out. Talk to me about this. We hoped about Jesus. We thought he was the prophet. We thought he was going to do all of this. And then it’s a mess. The women come telling stories. There’s just an open grave. There’s no Jesus there. No angels there. No nothing there. It’s all just kind of over and done with. And then Jesus doesn’t do a miracle. What does he do? He does a Bible study with them right there on the road. Verse 25, 26, 27. And Jesus said to them, man, did you get it all wrong? Didn’t you read? And then he takes them back to the whole Old Testament. Moses and the prophets. And he talks to them about them. And he says, here’s the problem, guy and girl. Here’s the problem. You had this wrong. This world has it wrong. They wanted to see a Messiah who would be a king, who would sit on a throne, who would get rid of the Romans. And then he would be king and rule over them like a king. But you didn’t read the scriptures properly. What did the scriptures say about me? Scripture says Messiah would come, but Messiah would be what? The servant of the Lord. More than that, he would be the suffering servant of the Lord. Did you ever read Isaiah? By his stripes, we are healed. By his wounds, we are made safe. They would look at him and not want to look at him because they would hurt him so badly. That’s what Messiah would come to do. Isn’t that what Messiah did? See, they didn’t need a miracle. They needed the Word. Because they would have to go out into this world and answer the questions of people that would have the same questions as they had. And the only way that they would be able to answer those questions was if they were in the Word. How you and I get through this? How do we walk and work in this world? In the Word. Psalm 119 verse 105. What does that say? There’s a coffee up again. You know it. Oh, there goes the coffee. You got it, Dave. Your Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. In this dark world, how do we walk? In the Word. Because the Word will give you light, will walk you where Jesus wants to walk with you, will protect you. Because it is His Word. It is alive and well and living. And that’s why He doesn’t just say, guys, here’s a miracle. Boom, it’s me, Jesus. He takes them to the Word because the Word is what they would need to continue living in this world. Second Timothy 3.16. And there’s no coffee in this one. And I’ll be broke by the end of the day because I know Dave will know this one too. Second Timothy 3.16. What does that say? The whole Scripture is, sorry, God breathed the Greek word so beautiful, theopneistos, theos, God, pneuma, the Spirit of God. The whole Spirit was breathed by God and fulfilled with the Spirit. And then listen how He says it in the New Living Translation. And it is useful to teach us what is true, to make us realise what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. Why does He do the Bible study with Him? Because that Scripture will improve our lives, will help our lives, will help us to walk through the doubt and the hopelessness and the difficult and the upside down days, because this does not change as much as our Lord and our God do not change. The Scripture is what we need to do every day of our lives. It will bring the light that we need. Let me end. One more little surprise. So they get to where they need to turn off to Emmaus and Jesus pretends to be going the other way. I love how cool He does this whole story, right? And of course, Cleopas and Mary say, come with us. Come, come, stay with us. Spend the night. It’s dark. He goes in and spends time with them. Did you notice something strange in that text? Who’s the guest? Jesus. Who breaks the bread? Would you expect that from the guest? We should always watch those little things, right? Don’t miss, because that’s where the surprise lies. Because they sit there and instead of them taking that bread and breaking the bread and passing it to Jesus, Jesus breaks the bread, passes the bread to them. And in that moment, they realise it’s the Lord. In the moment that Jesus shows them who He is again, the servant in serving, in giving, the miracle happens of them seeing the Lord Jesus. Jesus becomes visible in this world when the children of the Lord serve like the Lord served. Yes, we can have arguments and words, but people see the Lord at their best, and we become servants. When we have crucified hands like Jesus, hands that will give freely, hands that touch gently, hands that are open and do not point, judging, but give loving hands and hold. Jesus becomes visible in this world when our feet are crucified, and they walk where Jesus would walk, into all those places that are dark and difficult and hard, where the world is not one to go. When maybe, and I hook on, and this wasn’t written in the sermon, but I was just thinking of you, when we go and we serve downtown and we pick up some junk, we see Jesus, because those feet are crucified and they walk, because that’s where He would have been, and His hands would pick them up, because that’s so Jesus. I started the question, how do we live in this world? What kind of pictures do we paint? I’m sure we paint those pictures of hope, because we know there isn’t more. Amen. Take a few moments of silent prayer. Lord Jesus, thank you for always looking for us. That one little sheep that would walk off, or that one coin that would fall and go into the dark place, and actually two boys, not just one, who were lost, and you always stand looking, waiting, searching, and that’s what you do. Thank you that we have been found. Thank you for your Word. Thank you for your Holy Spirit. Thank you, Lord Jesus, for being the servant of the Lord. May we serve, because in serving, you might be saved. In your precious name, we pray. Amen.

https://www.bible.com/events/49592769 Church of the Nazarene - East Rockingham Campus Encounters Part 3 The Emmaus Road encounter Today we continue in our Easter teaching series called Encounters. We are looking at different stories in the bible where people personally encounter Jesus. Today we are looking at Jesus' encounter with two disciples walking down the Emmaus Road What did this encounter mean for them? What can we learn for our lives today? ‭‭Luke‬ ‭24‬:‭13‬-‭16‬‬ Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognizing him. In Lukes Gospel, this is the first post-resurrection encounter of Jesus. As they are walking along, the text says they were discussing everything that had happened. The language here indicates this more than a casual discussion- it was one of passion and perhaps even debate. Disillusioned and confused, they start walking away- trying to sort it all out as they go down the road. And that's when Jesus shows up. ‭‭Luke‬ ‭24‬:‭17‬‬ He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?” They stood still, their faces downcast. The weight they were carrying becomes clear as Jesus invites himself into their conversation. Literally the emotion, the burden of what has just taken place is written all over their face. ‭‭Luke‬ ‭24‬:‭18‬-‭21‬‬ One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?” “What things?” he asked. “About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place. In the Jewish tradition, 3 days after death was the point of no return- death was final at that point. For these disciples, it was more than Jesus that was dead- their hope of him overthrowing the Roman's and returning the nation of Israel to a place of prominence and freedom was over too. What they had focused on, what they thought was sure to come, what they were excited about- was over. It didn't come, and seemingly never would. Have you ever been there? ‭‭Luke‬ ‭24‬:‭22‬-‭24‬‬ In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning but didn't find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus.” ‭‭Luke‬ ‭24‬:‭25‬-‭27‬‬ He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself. Jesus continues the conversation with some stiff words- calling out their resistance to believing all that was written about Jesus. It's interesting here- Jesus doesn't go after them for not believing his own teaching, or his own words about his identity and resurrection. He doesn't even rebuke them for not believing the testimony of the women, or the other disciples, or even the empty tomb itself. He calls them out because they have not believed what the word of God, the bible said about him. ‭‭Luke‬ ‭24‬:‭28‬-‭29‬‬ As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if he were going farther. But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them. Jesus was willing to walk a little while with these disciples as they were walking away. But he stayed with them because they asked. ‭‭Luke‬ ‭24‬:‭30‬-‭32‬‬ When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” One encounter is all it took and their hearts were aflame with hope. The scriptures and the stories they couldn't figure out, were now alive and right in front of them. And their hearts were on fire. All of the information, the questions, the thoughts they had about Jesus, came alive in the person of Jesus, right before their eyes. This was the encounter that changed everything for these two disciples. ‭‭Luke‬ ‭11‬:‭9‬-‭13‬‬ “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. “Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!” We know from this encounter story that Jesus is alive. We know that he is the fulfillment of God's redemptive plan according to the scriptures. And he is still encountering people who are seeking him in the every day events of life. The question that remains for us is simply this: Will you look for Jesus, right here? Here in the everyday moments and needs of your life? Will you ask, seek, and knock for an encounter with Jesus himself?

It's possible to be religious, to know the Bible, to participate in church activities — and still remain outside God's family. In Matthew 12, religious leaders demand signs from Jesus, yet they miss what's right in front of them. In this sermon, we explore three different ways of relating to Jesus: holding out, cleaning up, or drawing near.

There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together 34 and saying, “It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.” 35 Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread.

Fellowship - kŏinōnia - Close mutual relationships and involvement; partnership, participation; sharing in activities or privileges of an intimate association We are to "continue steadfastly" in Fellowship - both horizontally - with our brothers and sisters in Christ, and vertically with the Father and Jesus. And this is that "your joy may be full." Vertical Fellowship - We are not called merely into a relationship ABOUT JESUS; we're called into a kŏinōnia WITH JESUS. We are called to partner with, participate with, involved with Jesus in an intimate relationship. You cannot have faith outside of the revelation that Jesus living in you is greater than he who is in the world, and then you can release faith through Jesus living in you. Horizontal Fellowship - Who you fellowship with MATTERS! We have been called to horizontal kŏinōnia that goes out into the world that is so connected to Jesus that He in us will draw people to Him. When we partner with people who are connected to Jesus who prays for us, who encourages us, and when we get out of kŏinōnia with Jesus and the Bible, they call us to the truth. And when we partner with others in ministry - fruit abounds to your account in heaven. "That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life— the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested to us— that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ. And these things we write to you that your joy may be full." 1 John 1:1-4 SERMON NOTES: https://www.bible.com/events/49355284 The Roads Church: https://theroads.church

Luke 24 On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb.  2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.  4 While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them.  5 In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead?  6 He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: 7 ‘The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.' ” 8 Then they remembered his words. 9 When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others.  10 It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles.  11 But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense.  12 Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened. 13 Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.” 40 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. 41 And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?”  42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate it in their presence. 44 He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.” 45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures.  46 He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.  48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”

A New Creation, Matthew 20.29-37 —  New Sight Introduction What is the question? Who does God accept? Rich law-keepers? Ethnic Israel? Leaders? Associates? What is revealed? About God? About Jesus? About following Jesus? “As they were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed him. There were two blind men sitting by the roadside. When they heard that Jesus was passing by, they shouted, “Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!” The crowd sternly ordered them to be quiet; but they shouted even more loudly, “Have mercy on us, Lord, Son of David!” Jesus stood still and called them, saying, “What do you want me to do for you?” They said to him, “Lord, let our eyes be opened.” Moved with compassion, Jesus touched their eyes. Immediately they regained their sight and followed him.”  Matt 20.29-34 Ch20 overview and themes 1-16: parable of the labourers -- the last shall be first and the first shall be last 17-19: prediction of his death and resurrection 20-23: Mother of James and John requests special treatment (one of very few women to get it wrong) 24-28: Teaching on servanthood 29-34: Jesus heals two blind men Why this matters to us.... 1. Why Jesus Stops, vv29-37 Question: What is happening? Someone asks He sees/hears He came for this reason His compassion - desire to help 2. Who Jesus Stops For Question: What are we meant to notice? The blind - some end up seeing The blind - some do not end up seeing 3. What we learn about Jesus Question: What do we learn about Jesus? He is interruptible - for you, for us He hears the cries of the needy - out there and in here. He is moved, by our needs - that feeling in the gut…. Conclusion Who are we? Blindly blind? Grumblers; Selfishly ambitious; Jealous; Restrictors; Blind? Are we the grumblers if people get into heaven we don't think deserve to get there? Are we the mother of Zebedee who wants special treatment from Jesus for those we love? Are we the disciples angry because someone might be ‘greater' than them? Are we the crowd who's discipleship is restricting who has access to Jesus? Seeing blind? People who seek Jesus' help despite opposition and embarrassment Jesus Interruptible Attentive Generous Compassionate Are we Jesus - interruptible, generous, attentive, compassionate? On Monday - will you be interruptible for the sake of people feeling the compassion of Jesus? Lord's Supper “But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind.” (Luke 14:13 NRSV) The Lord's Supper is that kind of banquet Anger at sin (not sinners) led to Jesus' courageous compassionate sacrifice Easter is on the horizon Let's stop right now to remember and honour Jesus stopping for us Please add your comments on this week's topic. Introduction Do you like a new start?- Feels good when we've been stuck- True for people -- true for groups The desire for hope leads people to make good choices  Making a fresh start involves courage, hope, faith, risk What can we learn from this story to help us make good choices when a new start opportunity comes our way? Question: How did Jews and Samaritans feel about one another? Question: Modern examples?  Point: They were stuck in animosity. The new thing Jesus does with the woman is prophetic of what he will do with and for all people after Pentecost. Discussion Q: Her current situation? Q: What changes as a result of her encounter with Jesus? She sees through His parables and glimpses the truth behind His words when so many others, including Jewish experts and scholars, could not. Nic - 'you are Israel's teacher...' Q: What are we to learn from this encounter? About Jesus? He makes the uncomfortable comfortable Talks to her as an equal Loves all What change in our thinking is required? Believe God can change 'lost causes'? - including ourselves Trust he loves you and wants personal connection with you? Conclusions Testimonies change lives - even whole towns The 'unlikely' might be the most open Jesus wants everyone in his Kingdom Lord's Supper We are considering many 'new things' - charity, staff, youth ministry Keep focus on Jesus “Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”” (John 4:13-14 NIV11) Water a significant theme in John (first miracle) “one of the soldiers pierced Jesus' side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water.” (John 19:34 NIV11)

Welcome to Episode #120 of Way of the Bible podcast. This is our eighth of eight episodes in our fifteenth mini-series, It's All About Jesus.  On this episode we're going to take A Walk on the Beach with DrZ and assimilate, integrate, and synthesize the many lessons we've learned on this mini-series into a single thought from which all other thoughts originate.Thank you for meeting with me here once again at the beach house on this amazing early fall morning. It was in the mid-60's this morning and will be in the mid to low 50's this weekend. With high's in the mid-80's this is almost paradise. Paradise along the Emerald Coast is mid-70's during the day and low 50's at night. Shorts & short sleeves during the day and beach bonfires at night. But already I digress. Before I get back on track, I invite you back this coming weekend for a nightly beach bonfires Thursday through Saturday. This will be the only time I mention this so don't forget. Most of you know the drill by now. If you're new with us today, and I see a few faces I don't recognize, we gather to mingle for moment in the house and then head to the beach to begin our walks and talks. Now's the time to use the restroom, get a beach walk beverage from the coffee bar or cooler, and then head to the back porch to apply sunscreen, and put on hats and sunglasses. I'll meet you out on the back porch in a few minutes as I've got some mingling to do myself with the first-time guests and learn their names at a minimum. So glad to see everyone read my email and is ready to hit the beach wearing clothes you don't mind getting wet. It's just past 9:30 and the sand is cool so kick off that footwear and enjoy direct connection with the electromagnetic resonance of the earth. We'll be heading straight for the flat surf today; walking, standing, or sitting in one place allowing the warm lapping water and cool coastal breezes to buffet us. There's a lesson were going to learn today I hope you never forget. We've got the beach to ourselves this morning so let's spread out a bit. I want you each to be no further in the water than one or two feet at a maximum beyond the receded surf line. I'm going to wade out here to about mid hip depth for the teaching. When we get done, I've a special surprise for us all to enjoy.I want you to think for a moment why you think this mini-series is entitled, “It's All About JESUS.” If you don't mind, two or three of you please shout out what you're thinking. ·       That's good, the whole Bible is about Jesus. ·       LOL, You know it's a squirrel, but you think I want you to think everything is about Jesus. While funny, there's more truth to that than we know. ·       What's that, the “it's all about” refers to our faith, and the object of our faith is Jesus. That's a good one too. All these are very good reasons for this mini-series title, and there are more, I'm sure. On this surf emersion walk, stand, and/or sit I'm going to guide us through the reasoning I used for the title, “It's all About JESUS.”

In Romans 12 Paul begins to describe how God has designed Christian community to be like a single body with many members—body parts—each with a distinct function and purpose, but all belonging to and working together as one body. So today we'll be talking about stewardship, spiritual gifts, and Christian vocation. Takeaways will include a “time and talents” form for volunteering at Faith, and a larger call to share the gifts of God, to “be” the body of Christ “out there,” beyond the church walls, in the everyday matters of work, home, school, and neighborhood. We start with a story about how Jesus likes to show up among his followers post-resurrection: on the road, in the Scriptures, with the bread.Luke 24:13-32Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. 14 They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. 15 As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; 16 but they were kept from recognizing him.17 He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?”They stood still, their faces downcast. 18 One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”19 “What things?” he asked.“About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. 24 Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus.”25 He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.28 As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if he were going farther. 29 But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them.30 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. 32 They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”CLICK HERE for link to Gifts insert.Support the show

In today's Good Friday message, Pastor Harrison Conley shares a powerful word about the significance of the cry of the cross that Jesus made as He was crucified. What does this mean for us?Jesus' death on the cross is the sacrifice to end all sacrifices. Through Him, we not only know ABOUT Jesus, but we also get to know WHO Jesus is in a personal way. We learn that through His death and resurrection, we have salvation. Through Jesus' finished work on the cross, we have eternal life and an open door to a personal relationship with Him.

Bible Reading: Psalm 103:8-14; Hebrews 4:14-16Editor's note: This story mentions abuse and may not be suitable for young children."Everyone, this is Grace," the teacher told the class.Grace stared at the rows of faces from the front of the room. The teacher had everyone say their names, but Grace didn't bother listening. No one ever wanted to be her friend, and it probably wouldn't be long before she was kicked out of this school too, just like the last one. It wasn't long before she got in trouble. She knew it was wrong to hurt people, but when kids made fun of her, anger would swell in her chest, and before she knew it, she'd be pulling someone's hair or shoving them into a locker. Then she'd feel horrible, because that's what her mom used to do to her before Grace had gone to live with Aunt Heather. I'm turning into my mom, she thought as she sat in the principal's office. When Aunt Heather picked her up, Grace stared out the car window. She thought about the field trip to the zoo she'd be missing because she'd been suspended for a few days. She'd never been to the zoo before. Lost in her thoughts, it was a while before she realized Aunt Heather wasn't taking her home. "Where are we going?" she asked as her aunt turned into a parking lot. Grace's eyes widened when she saw the sign. "Why are we at the zoo?""Because I need you to understand something," Aunt Heather said. "Remember what I told you about God's grace? About Jesus loving us so much He died for our sins?" Grace nodded. "Well, when we trust in Jesus, we don't get what we deserve for the wrongs we've done," said Aunt Heather. "Instead, we get eternal life with Him, and He fills our lives with good things. That's grace." Aunt Heather sighed. "I know you've been through a lot, Grace. Jesus does too. He wants to give you grace and help you through the pain you feel because of wrong things done to you. I want to help you too. I made an appointment for you to talk to a counselor tomorrow. Will you do that?"Grace hesitated, then nodded. "Okay." She looked outside. "Wait--does this mean you're taking me to the zoo? On the day I got suspended?""Yep!" Aunt Heather smiled and opened the car door. "This is grace." -Courtney LasaterHow About You?Have you done things you're not proud of? Everyone has. We're all sinners. But God's grace covers all our wrongs. Instead of giving us what we deserve, Jesus offers us forgiveness. When we trust in Him, He fills our lives with good things like peace, hope, and joy, and He sticks with us through life's ups and downs. Trust in Him so you can experience His amazing grace. 0:12 {People we Shouldn’t Pray For?} My father believes that there are people we do not (or should not) pray for. He backs it up with John 17:9, saying that it may even be a sin to pray for people we shouldn’t pray for. I would love to hear your thoughts! 8:22 {Truth in Love when Family is in Sin} My fiancé's sibling is transgender. I'm scared our future children will think it is a good thing and that it’s right. His family accepts this lifestyle unquestionably. I don't want to cut them out of our lives, but I don't know what else to do to protect our family. How can I be obedient to God and still be loving to his sibling and the rest of the family? 12:43 {Spiritual vs. Political Progressivism} Isn't Progressive Christianity simply the outcome of forcing progressive/leftist ideology onto Christianity? Should we even make the distinction between politically & religiously progressive beliefs? 19:04 {Witnessing to a Dying Loved One} My grandpa is dying, and doesn't have long. He has dementia/Alzheimer’s now and has never been a Christian. Is it too late to share the Gospel with him? If not, how do I do it effectively? 23:32 {About House Churches} What do you think of the house church movement (Francis Chan)? 29:04 {About Levirate Marriages} Why did God endorse levirate marriage? Isn’t it wrong to pressure a man to marry someone he doesn’t want to? And since marriage will supposedly end in Heaven, is love not a factor for God? 35:08 {Must Pastors be Married?} Does 1 Timothy 3:2 mean that I must have a wife to be a pastor? What about a man who doesn’t have a wife? 40:56 {Are Illusionists’ Tricks Sinful?} Is there anything wrong with learning sleight of hand magic or using it in evangelism? 46:16 {About Marriage in Heaven} In Matthew 22:23-29, Jesus rebukes the Sadducees for trying to trap Him, saying they don’t know the Scriptures. Where in the Scriptures is this topic of marriage in Heaven mentioned? 51:03 {About the Census: Luke 2} Is there any extrabiblical evidence for the census in Luke 2? I heard it would be a pretty dumb idea to send people to their place of birth if you later want them to pay taxes from their current home. 57:46 {About Jesus’ Divinity Upon His Death} Was Jesus still fully God when He died? What happened to His divinity between God "turning His face away" and the resurrection? 1:01:37 {Navigating Marital Struggles} What should a Christian wife do if her husband doesn't want to work on their marriage, expects her to do almost everything when it comes to responsibilities, and doesn't provide enough for her needs? 1:06:09 {Overcoming Self-Consciousness} Mike how can we be less self-aware or self-conscious? It stops me from preaching to anybody because my thoughts tell me I'm being disingenuous. 1:09:00 {Ideas for What to Pray About} I have issues praying every day because I feel like I don’t have anything to pray about. What would you suggest, to help with this? 1:10:49 {Is Islam an “Abrahamic Faith” that Saves?} How do I defend the Christian faith with my family when they always bring up Genesis 22:18, arguing that Islam can also lead to salvation because it's an Abrahamic faith? 1:16:01 {Should I Correct my Christian Boss?} I work for a company that is owned by a professing Christian. He makes inappropriate jokes. I don't know if rebuking or correcting my boss is proper or not. How do I go about this? 1:20:08 {Catholic vs. SDA School for Children?} Would it be better to send my children to a Catholic School or a 7th Day Adventist school? We are looking to take our children out of public schools, and these are the two options available to us. 1:22:28 {Guiding a Wayward Teen} How do I respond to my 17 year old daughter who is persistent
