While 63% of Americans identify as Christian, only 4% actually live as disciples whose faith shapes their daily decisions. That means many are calling Jesus Savior, but few are following Him as Lord. This week marks the beginning of a series designed to reintroduce us to the habits of Jesus, not as religious tasks, but as the pathway to genuine transformation. When a rabbi said “follow me,” it meant something tangible: come be with me, watch how I live, learn how I pray, rest, love, and obey. Jesus didn't just forgive us; He formed us. And spiritual formation isn't about trying harder. It's about learning to live differently. We fail not because we don't want to grow, but because we often rely on willpower, more information, or one spiritual high to carry us. That's not how Jesus formed people. He taught truth, lived in community, modeled practices, and gave us His Spirit. The call of discipleship is to be with Him, become like Him, and do what He did. And that starts right here.

Luke 2:1-11 ESV1 In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. 2 This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3 And all went to be registered, each to his own town. 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, 5 to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. 6 And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. 7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. 8 And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. 10 And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. • • •1. Pastor Nick contrasts today's fear-driven news with the good news of Advent, reminding listeners that the stories we listen to shape who we become. In Luke 2, God delivers heaven's headline first to humble shepherds, showing that He sees the overlooked and brings peace, joy, and salvation through Jesus—Savior, Christ, and Lord. The shepherds and Mary model both bold sharing and quiet faithfulness, calling believers to let heaven's better news shape their lives and overflow to others. #Advent #GoodNews #JoyForAll #Luke2 #ChristmasHope

Christmas brings us back to the name given before Bethlehem's manger ever saw a cry—Jesus. Matthew 1:21 anchors our focus: “you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” In Scripture, names aren't labels; they carry identity and purpose. Just as Samuel meant “God has heard,” and Elijah meant “Yahweh is my God,” the name Jesus—Hebrew Joshua—means “Savior,” and announces his mission from the start. That shared name invites us to see Jesus as the “better Joshua”: Joshua led Israel into a land and a season of rest; Jesus leads his people into eternal rest. Joshua fought physical enemies; Jesus conquered sin and death at the cross and empty tomb.Hebrews tells us Joshua's rest was incomplete, pointing beyond itself. Christ offers the full Sabbath-rest of God—rest not only from wandering but from the tyranny of guilt, shame, and fear. Through his blood we have redemption and forgiveness (Ephesians 1:7). And he doesn't just save us from something; he saves us for something: a transformed, abundant life in him (John 10:9–10), with an inheritance that can never perish, spoil, or fade (1 Peter 1:3–4). Joshua's victories held for a generation; Jesus' victory is for all who believe, and it outlasts death itself (1 Corinthians 15:54–57).So how do we respond to the better Joshua? First, with surrender. Joshua called Israel to choose whom they would serve; Jesus calls us to deny ourselves and follow him. Surrender is not perfection, but a posture that lets him lead. Second, with confidence. If God could topple walls under Joshua's leadership, how much more can we trust the One who conquered the grave to shepherd us through storms and sin's struggle? Finally, with hope. He will not abandon the work he began in us, and even in the hard places he forms our dependence and deepens our joy. This Christmas we call the baby by the name that tells the whole story: Jesus—Savior—the better Joshua who brings us into the true promise: forgiveness, transformation, and an unfading inheritance.

They note how eternal life, which originally was linked to promises made to Israel, now becomes a promise for the entire world as any person places their loyalty in Jesus Christ. They investigate the meaning of “savior” in the ancient world, ultimately realizing that the role of Jesus as Savior encompassed more than just salvation from sin, but also protection and guidance. They conclude by reviewing Jesus' second recorded sign in the gospel, affirming Jesus' authority over life and death.

Episode 201Bonkers - 12This is the twelfth installation in the series titled "This World Has Gone Bonkers." You will enjoy this series if you've ever read a news article and thought, "man, that is just crazy!" We know and see it increasingly everyday: happenings that show the powers and principalities at play behind the craziness, and we can't help but wonder just what is this world coming to. At the same time, we know the scriptures tell us these times are both here and coming, so we trust God, suit up for spiritual battle, and engage lost souls for Christ. In today's episode, we cover articles about high courts having to spell out the definition of gender, climate activists tearing down huge swaths of the Amazon rain-forest to build roads for an upcoming climate change conference, clergy reducing Christ from Savior of the world to a mere guide, and women aborting their children in response to faulty and shady testing. If you have ever thought that you shouldn't annoy the stranger with your gospel presentation or that you shouldn't inconvenience your neighbor with witnessing efforts, throw timidity out the window, take one listen to this podcast, and realize that everywhere all around us, people are absolutely lost in spiritual darkness, desperately in need of the Way, the Truth, and the Life, Whom you know! Take heart, be bold, and reach out and engage them for Christ, because this world has gone Bonkers.Listen to the Removing Barriers Podcast here:Spotify: https://cutt.ly/Ega8YeI Apple Podcast: https://cutt.ly/Vga2SVdEdifi: https://cutt.ly/Meec7nsvYouTube: https://cutt.ly/mga8A77Podnews: https://podnews.net/podcast/i4jxoSee all our platforms: https://removingbarriers.netContact us:Email us: https://removingbarriers.net/contactFinancially support the show: https://removingbarriers.net/donateAffiliates:Book Shop: https://bookshop.org/shop/removingbarriersChristian Books . com: https://www.christianbook.com/Christian/Books/home?event=AFF&p=1236574See all our affiliates: https://removingbarriers.net/affiliatesNotes:Amazon rain-forest cut down : https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c9vy191rgn1oUK Supreme Court rules transgender women: https://nypost.com/2025/04/16/world-news/uk-supreme-court-rules-transgender-women-does-not-fit-legal-term-woman-in-landmark-decision/NYC woman had abortion at 20 weeks after paternity test: https://nypost.com/2025/04/12/us-news/woman-has-abortion-after-incorrect-paternity-test-lawsuit/Jesus: Savior or Guide?: https://x.com/i/status/1888346907015299389https://x.com/i/status/1888346907015299389

Through a compelling story of being stranded on a remote Cambodian island, this message explores the universal human experience of spiritual disconnection and our need for rescue. Just as the stranded travelers couldn't return to the mainland by their own efforts, the speaker illustrates how people often find themselves unable to bridge the gap between their current spiritual state and a deeper connection with God. The narrative weaves together the physical experience of needing rescue with the broader concept of spiritual rescue through Jesus. It addresses common misconceptions about spiritual fulfillment, explaining why personal achievements, good deeds, and religious observance often leave people still feeling disconnected. The message explores how Jesus serves as a bridge between humanity and God, offering a way to move from spiritual isolation to connection. Using accessible examples and straightforward language, it explains how Jesus's role as a spiritual rescuer works in practical terms, while acknowledging that many people don't initially recognize their need for this type of rescue.

Unsurprisingly, Lutheran Service Book contains a substantial collection of “Trust” hymns — and also unsurprisingly, many of those hymns are dearly loved by Lutheran ladies.   In this Hymn Sing with Sarah episode, Sarah tells the stories of over a dozen different trust-based hymns, a list informed by listener polls conducted earlier in the Lutheran Ladies' Lounge Facebook discussion group.   Lyrics featured include “Lord, Thee I Love with All My Heart (LSB 708), “Jesus Savior, Pilot Me (LSB 715), “Jesus Lead Thou On” (LSB 718), “How Firm a Foundation” (LSB 728), “I Am Trusting Thee, Lord Jesus” (LSB 729), “O God, Our Help in Ages Past” (LSB 733), “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” (LSB 739), and “I Am Jesus' Little Lamb” (LSB 740).  “These hymns confess what God promises to provide for us,” says Sarah. “They talk about how God will provide for us, how he forgives our sins, rescues us from death and the devil, gives us eternal life, and promises to be always with us. They also confess that nothing can separate us from God. We are His children, and literally nothing can take that away from us. There's a reason they are favorites.”  Stay tuned at the end for a 2021 performance of “Lord, Thee I Love with All My Heart” by the Concordia Seminary Choir (including Sarah Gulseth) with Dr. Jim Marriott on the organ. Prophesies about Jesus birth proclaimed He would be a Savior. In today's message we take a look at a familiar story in John 4 in which Jesus speaks to an unnamed woman who is empty from the hardships of life. To this seemingly insignificant (to those around her BUT not to the Savior) woman, Jesus makes His boldest claim about Who He is. Our texts are Matthew 1:20-21, and John 4. Questions? God is very specific with the names that He reveals Himself with. The name Jesus means “Savior.” Jesus came to save us from our sins. Romans 3:23 tells us that all of us have sinned, so we are all under the penalty of sin. We cannot save ourselves. We need a Savior. As our Savior, Jesus offers us 2 gifts… 1. Jesus offers redemption. God's law demands perfection. Without salvation through our Savior, we are condemned to eternity, separated from Jesus. Since God desires a relationship with us, He sent His Son to pay the price for our sins. Jesus offers us grace and mercy through the gift of redemption. 2. Jesus offers a relationship. When you receive Jesus, the Son of God, you become an heir of God as a child of God! God wants a personal relationship with you, but only you can decide to receive Jesus as your Savior. Will you receive the gift of eternal life and a relationship with Jesus? Scripture Reading: Mt 1:20-21; Lk 2:10,11; Acts 5:30-32; Jn 12:47-48; 1 Tim 1:15; 1 Pet 3:18 Behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.  She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." And the angel said to them, "Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy that will be for all the people.  For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord." The God of our fathers raised Jesus, whom you killed by hanging him on a tree.  God exalted him at his right hand as Leader and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. If anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world.  The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day. The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God.   Sermon Summary: The grand declaration in 1 Timothy 1:15 captures the central purpose for the incarnation of God the Son.  "The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost." Although Jesus was a matchless teacher to hear … and a sterling example to follow … we do not rightly understand Him unless we understand that He is a Savior.  The human race is lost in the darkness of sin and God is a holy Judge who, in His perfect justice, must punish all deeds of darkness.  So, Christ has come, most centrally, to save us from the deserved wrath of God.  "Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God" (Rom 5:9). The way Jesus saves us from the great judgment to come is be our substitute, both in life and in death.  Jesus lived a perfect life of obedience in our place.  His obedience is credited to our account.  And He suffered the wrath of God on the cross in our place.  His payment is credited to our account.  We are all guilty and the only way to stand in the day of judgment is to have Jesus as the all-sufficient Mediator between us and God.  The birth in Bethlehem is necessary for Jesus to accomplish His indescribable work of saving arrogant rebels … like me.
