Christmas is full of plans. But plans don't always go according to plan. That was true the very first Christmas - at least for Joseph. He was engaged, soon to be married. Then his fiance got pregnant - that wasn't part of the plan. But the story in Matthew helps us see the big picture. It was all going exactly according to God's plan, and that made all the difference. This wasn't a normal birth.

Hope Church - Fort Worth, TX

Through a compelling story of being stranded on a remote Cambodian island, this message explores the universal human experience of spiritual disconnection and our need for rescue. Just as the stranded travelers couldn't return to the mainland by their own efforts, the speaker illustrates how people often find themselves unable to bridge the gap between their current spiritual state and a deeper connection with God. The narrative weaves together the physical experience of needing rescue with the broader concept of spiritual rescue through Jesus. It addresses common misconceptions about spiritual fulfillment, explaining why personal achievements, good deeds, and religious observance often leave people still feeling disconnected. The message explores how Jesus serves as a bridge between humanity and God, offering a way to move from spiritual isolation to connection. Using accessible examples and straightforward language, it explains how Jesus's role as a spiritual rescuer works in practical terms, while acknowledging that many people don't initially recognize their need for this type of rescue.

History changed the understanding of savior into an otherworldly superhero who came to save the day and will come again to do it again a final time. Too bad that's not how Jesus - or his original audience - wanted to be known. Imagine how history would have unfolded differently if the actual rendering of the word savior as healer would have dominated? How can we embrace this meaning today? What are the implications for our private lives and even global conflicts?

Unsurprisingly, Lutheran Service Book contains a substantial collection of “Trust” hymns — and also unsurprisingly, many of those hymns are dearly loved by Lutheran ladies.   In this Hymn Sing with Sarah episode, Sarah tells the stories of over a dozen different trust-based hymns, a list informed by listener polls conducted earlier in the Lutheran Ladies' Lounge Facebook discussion group.   Lyrics featured include “Lord, Thee I Love with All My Heart (LSB 708), “Jesus Savior, Pilot Me (LSB 715), “Jesus Lead Thou On” (LSB 718), “How Firm a Foundation” (LSB 728), “I Am Trusting Thee, Lord Jesus” (LSB 729), “O God, Our Help in Ages Past” (LSB 733), “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” (LSB 739), and “I Am Jesus' Little Lamb” (LSB 740).  “These hymns confess what God promises to provide for us,” says Sarah. “They talk about how God will provide for us, how he forgives our sins, rescues us from death and the devil, gives us eternal life, and promises to be always with us. They also confess that nothing can separate us from God. We are His children, and literally nothing can take that away from us. There's a reason they are favorites.”  Stay tuned at the end for a 2021 performance of “Lord, Thee I Love with All My Heart” by the Concordia Seminary Choir (including Sarah Gulseth) with Dr. Jim Marriott on the organ. Prophesies about Jesus birth proclaimed He would be a Savior. In today's message we take a look at a familiar story in John 4 in which Jesus speaks to an unnamed woman who is empty from the hardships of life. To this seemingly insignificant (to those around her BUT not to the Savior) woman, Jesus makes His boldest claim about Who He is. Our texts are Matthew 1:20-21, and John 4. Questions? God is very specific with the names that He reveals Himself with. The name Jesus means “Savior.” Jesus came to save us from our sins. Romans 3:23 tells us that all of us have sinned, so we are all under the penalty of sin. We cannot save ourselves. We need a Savior. As our Savior, Jesus offers us 2 gifts… 1. Jesus offers redemption. God's law demands perfection. Without salvation through our Savior, we are condemned to eternity, separated from Jesus. Since God desires a relationship with us, He sent His Son to pay the price for our sins. Jesus offers us grace and mercy through the gift of redemption. 2. Jesus offers a relationship. When you receive Jesus, the Son of God, you become an heir of God as a child of God! God wants a personal relationship with you, but only you can decide to receive Jesus as your Savior. Will you receive the gift of eternal life and a relationship with Jesus? Scripture Reading: Mt 1:20-21; Lk 2:10,11; Acts 5:30-32; Jn 12:47-48; 1 Tim 1:15; 1 Pet 3:18 Behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.  She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." And the angel said to them, "Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy that will be for all the people.  For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord." The God of our fathers raised Jesus, whom you killed by hanging him on a tree.  God exalted him at his right hand as Leader and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. If anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world.  The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day. The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God.   Sermon Summary: The grand declaration in 1 Timothy 1:15 captures the central purpose for the incarnation of God the Son.  "The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost." Although Jesus was a matchless teacher to hear … and a sterling example to follow … we do not rightly understand Him unless we understand that He is a Savior.  The human race is lost in the darkness of sin and God is a holy Judge who, in His perfect justice, must punish all deeds of darkness.  So, Christ has come, most centrally, to save us from the deserved wrath of God.  "Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God" (Rom 5:9). The way Jesus saves us from the great judgment to come is be our substitute, both in life and in death.  Jesus lived a perfect life of obedience in our place.  His obedience is credited to our account.  And He suffered the wrath of God on the cross in our place.  His payment is credited to our account.  We are all guilty and the only way to stand in the day of judgment is to have Jesus as the all-sufficient Mediator between us and God.  The birth in Bethlehem is necessary for Jesus to accomplish His indescribable work of saving arrogant rebels … like me.

The second chapter of Luke's gospel reports the angel's joyful announcement to the shepherds, “Do not be afraid…to you is born this day…a Savior.” Working our way through Diana Butler Bass's Freeing Jesus, we've considered what it means to experience and know Jesus as Friend and Teacher – as one who both invites us into loving union with God and who teaches us how to become all that God created us to be. This week we come to perhaps the most common, familiar, and often misunderstood name for Jesus – Savior. Likely, we've all seen the signs and bumper stickers – Jesus Saves - or the billboards that invite us to ask Jesus to be our Savior today. Western, and Protestant Christians in particular, give a lot of airtime to Jesus as Savior. So, what does it mean, to say that Jesus saves or that Jesus is our Savior? Bass hopes we'll come to see that it is about far more than avoiding hell and “getting our ticket punched for heaven”. The salvation Jesus brings is personal and social and involves the transformation of our lives and the world so that all experience freedom, joy, and loving union with God both now and in the life to come.
