This year, in celebration of Black History Month, we focus on the arts and the incredible contributions of African Americans to our cultural landscape. First up, jazz and how it informs our views on citizenship. We talk with Portsmouth native Wayne Winborne. He is the executive director of the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University-Newark, the largest and most comprehensive archive and library of jazz and jazz-related materials in the world. And our very own Jae Sinnett joins the conversation to invite you to a free lecture by Wilborne, sponsored by HR Jazz. Hear a perspective on this unique form of American music unlike you've ever heard before!
Political experts across the spectrum say that the 2024 Presidential election may be the most consequential election in our nation's history. Are you prepared to participate? Get all the information you need to know about voting and the voting process, including registration, methods of voting, voting deadlines, and why your voice matters. And during the second half of our show, Jae Sinnett and Justin Kauflin join us to talk about the upcoming Phoebus Jazz Festival!
Jae Sinnett is a man of many talents. He's a percussionist, radio show producer and host, foodie, and now has a new passion - HR Jazz, Inc.! We talk with Jae about his latest endeavor to enhance jazz education in Hampton Roads, engaging with students of all ages to learn and enjoy this uniquely American form of music. Plus, he'll share some delicious recipes just in time for the summer season.

Jeff Berlin is one of the most innovative electric bassists of the 20th and current centuries. Known for his unique tone, jaw dropping technique and dynamic approaches to the bass, he's helped establish the electric bass as a solo instrument well deserving of its place in modern music. He's released a dozen solo albums and you'll also find him on albums by Herbie Mann, Patti Austin, Ester Phillips - and many others. Award-winning program director Ray White caught up with Jeff in November of 2022, who shared stories which established himself as an elite musician and also talked about his latest album, Jack Songs. In our showcase segment Lisa Davis features saxophonist Will Donato whose latest single, Good On You, spent 3 weeks at the top of Billboard's Smooth Jazz charts. Lisa also features the latest from consummate drummer Jae Sinnett, who's released numerous albums with the latest being Altered Egos. His new single is Another View. Join us as we ease our way into the Labor Day holiday weekend with the soulful sounds of Jae Sinnett's latest CD "Altered Egos". This drummer, composer, music educator and foodie not only talks about his latest work, but also whips up something special from the Cooking with Jae kitchen especially for Another View fans! Here's how to make Jazzy Jae's Fig and Blueberry Chutney - Ingredients: Two cups diced fresh figs (Not dried), Two cups fresh blueberries, Three tablespoons apple cider vinegar, 1/2 cup lime juice, 1/2 cup brown sugar, One tablespoon grated ginger, Three cloves minced garlic, 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes, Three tablespoons honey, One teaspoon mustard seeds, 1/2 cup diced red onion, Two tablespoons butter, Pinch of salt, One tablespoon cornstarch for slurry (three tablespoons lime juice for slurry) Cooking directions: Melt butter in pot on med heat. Add onions. Cook for a couple of minutes stirring. Add all remaining ingredients except the slurry mixture. Stir frequently. Once the blueberries have popped open and the color has changed…about 10-15 minutes. Mix the cornstarch and remaining lime juice well to create the slurry. Add the slurry mixture slowly to get to the desired thickness YOU prefer. Taste and make adjustments if too sweet or too sour. More sugar or honey or vinegar and lime juice.
Another View celebrates 10 years on the radio! In honor of this major milestone, composer, performer, drummer, producer, and foodie Jae Sinnett has created a new theme song for Another View, aptly titled "Another View". Jae tells the back story of his latest creation, other music projects in the works and how he expresses his creativity through food.
Jae Sinnett, host of Sinnett in Session on WHRV had a few moments to speak with Randy Thomas, president and owner The Vanguard Brewpub & Distillery about their mandated shutdown, their opportunity to be part of the distillery team making hand sanitizer for the U.S. government, and the creative ways they are still working to support local musicians during the shutdown. Out of bad, comes good!
