Musicians recount the strange and unexpected story behind the making of your favorite albums. Dave Brubeck was raised as a cattle rancher in Califronia's Central Valley before becoming an Army band leader and a symbol of the American collegiate jazz movement. Tom, Rob, and Adam get together to discuss soulless soloing, bland time signatures, and the power of the rhythm section.Join the comment thread NOW available on our free Patreon to continue the conversation about this episode and get early access to the weekly show 100% ad free, plus 60+ bonus shows like Song Battle and Guilty Pleasureshttps://www.patreon.com/1001AlbumComplaintsJoin our Mailing List here: https://linktr.ee/1001albumcomplaintsEmail us your complaints (or questions / comments) at 1001AlbumComplaints@gmail.comListen to our episode companion playlist (compilation of the songs we referenced on this episode) here:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4JO24dfXSzFoU3t7ApQbcn?si=6ec39bd55a3443d0Listen to Time Out here:https://open.spotify.com/album/0nTTEAhCZsbbeplyDMIFuA?si=jMDRT8ANRYGKw_GCJUCATAAnd our international playlists continue to grow:Thai, German, Sweden 1, 2, & 3, Italian, Australian, Belgium 1 & 2Intro music: When the Walls Fell by The Beverly CrushersOutro music: After the Afterlife by MEGAFollow our Spotify Playlist of music produced directly by us. This SPECIAL EPISODE introduces my new single “THE CUT OF THE KNIFE”. It's the last of the four new singles that I've released monthly beginning in March. The first was “Rough Rider”, the second was “Moon Shot”, and the third was “Day At The Races”.I wrote “The Cut Of The Knife as a kind of homage to Dave Brubeck, the revered American jazz pianist. His saxophonist, Paul Desmond, wrote a song called “Take Five”, and the Brubeck band recorded it in 1959 on their album “Time Out”. That tune has become the biggest selling jazz song of all time. It even became a big crossover hit on the radio. One of the things that made “Take Five” so cool was that it was written in an odd time signature, 5/4 time. So the song's title was a play on words about its time signature and it was also an inside musician's phrase telling the band to relax for five minutes before the next set.“The Cut Of The Knife” features an incredible Guest Artist on guitar solo - Kerry Marx, the Musical Director of the Grand Ole Opry band who has been a guest on this podcast. His credits include touring with Johnny Mathis, Olivia Newton-John and Don McLean, recordings with Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash, movie albums like “Finding Nemo”, and music awards shows like Billboard, CMA and the American Music Awards. And a shout out goes to two of my longtime Project Grand Slam band mates - Baden Goyo on keys and Joel E. Mateo on drums. Both play terrific solos on the new single. And Joel's drum solo is particularly meaningful because Joe Morello, Brubeck's drummer, played a memorable drum solo on “Take Five”.“The Cut Of The Knife” has been called “Elegant”, “Beautiful” and “A Wonder”!CLICK HERE FOR ALL LINKSCLICK HERE FOR THE OFFICIAL VIDEO ---------------------------------------------The Follow Your Dream Podcast:Top 1% of all podcasts with Listeners in 200 countries!Click here for All Episodes Click here for Guest List Click here for Guest Groupings Click here for Guest TestimonialsClick here to Subscribe Click here to receive our Email UpdatesClick here to Rate and Review the podcast—----------------------------------------ROBERT'S RECENT SINGLES:“DAY AT THE RACES” is Robert's single that captures the thrills, chills and pageantry of horse racing's Triple Crown.
Xmas time is here! So we're bringing our annual Yuletide gifts to you in the form of rockin' and poppin' tunes. The first present under the tree is "I Want a Beatle For Christmas" by Patty Surbey & The Canadian VIPs. Requests for people put Santa Claus in an awkward position. The next gift is "Deck Five" by Saturday's Children. We think this one should be more well-known: it joins "Deck The Halls" with Dave Brubeck Quartet's "Take Five" and ... it works? Sometimes you get an inappropriate gift, and Bey Ireland's "All I Want For Christmas is a Go-Go Girl" is this year's example. It's a weird fusion of Northern Soul and lounge crooning ... Let's forget about all that and get back to the real Goofy Greats - "The Wildest Christmas" by The Rumbles Ltd. Santa makes an appearance in this one, and he sounds like Classy Freddie Blassie! And there's even a final stocking stuffer, so tune in to hear what it is - jing a linga, jing jing a linga!

On this episode of Vinyl Verdict, Bell, Jamie and Adam listen to Jamie's next pick, The Dave Brubeck Quartet's "Time Out". Released in 1959, it was the thirteenth album released by the Quartet, and was their most successful album. After taking a trip with the US State Department on a trip of Eurasia, Dave Brubeck discovered the street music of Turkey and their use of time signatures that would be unusual in jazz. "Time Out" features 7 songs with odd time signatures, including Take Five, the best selling jazz single of all time. But what will the boys think of the album? Come along and find out! And also listen to Adam get increasingly frustrated with Bell and Jamie.

‘The Dave Brubeck Quartet, Live From The Northwest, 1959' is a collection of never-before-released recordings from the archives of Brubeck Editions of two electrifying concerts recorded on April 4, 1959 at the historic Multnomah Hotel in Portland and on April 5th in the auditorium at nearby Clark College. The legendary quartet of Dave Brubeck on piano, alto saxophonist Paul Desmond, bassist Eugene Wright, and drummer Joe Morello are further testament to their unprecedented skills. What master sound engineer, Wally Heider, was able to capture from these diverse and challenging venues are two performances that embody the very sound of the Dave Brubeck Quartet that audiences first fell in love with - described as “lightning in a bottle.” We talk with multi-instrumentalist and Grammy-nominated composer, Chris Brubeck, about discovering this stellar collection in the archives, the backstory of how it happened, and why Brubeck Editions chose it as the label's third release in continuing the legacy of Dave Brubeck.

Here's a reboot of a fan favorite: Noel Paul Stookey, the Paul of Peter, Paul & Mary. He not only rode the folk wave of the early 1960s with such indelible songs like "Puff the Magic Dragon," "If I Had a Hammer" and helping popularize a young Minnesotan bard who went by the stage name of Bob Dylan, but helped created it. He shares the iconic trio's origin story as well as his own, and the many memories of a life, well lived, in music. Peter, Paul & Mary's long, legendary career was cut short with Mary Travers' tragic death in 2009, but their place in the cultural zeitgeist is eternal. Noel, a part-time Ojai resident, joins us to talk about his new album, "Fazz: Now & Then" and to reflect on the experience of collaborating with fellow musicians during the pandemic to create this nuanced, wide-ranging collection of 20 original songs with talented musicians such as Kent Palmer, Paul Winter, Paul Sullivan, David LaPlante and Edward Mottau. Fazz, as Noel explains, was christened by Paul Desmond of the Dave Brubeck Quartet to explain Peter, Paul & Mary's distinct fusion of jazz and folk. Noel picks up the resident Ojai podcast guitar (be still, my heart) to explain the shadings of alternate chord structures that inform much of the color of the album, as illustrated by the A Major, and the A Major 7th, its "smoky, mysterious cousin." Noel talks about writing "The Wedding Song: There is Love" - for Peter Yarrow's wedding, and his reluctance to perform it again until urged by Peter, and how it has made many, if not most, of the lists of most beautiful songs of all time, right up there with fellow Ojai resident Amanda McBroom's "The Rose." He also discusses his Christian faith and the epiphany he had at age 30 after a decade of fame, and the toll it took on his well-being. There's relevant folk music news: Noel's good friend John McCutcheon just released “Ukraine Now.” We did not talk about Ron DeSantis' fading aspirations, the Buffalo Bills abysmal overtime record or the enduring mystery of who ordered the hit on Tupac Shakur.
Every art form has its own language, a puzzle to unlock. One of the great joys of life is having a conversation with an artist who can decipher the code for us and allow us to see paintings anew. For this episode, we visit art galleries with two phenomenal Yaddo artists: Odili Donald Odita—the Nigerian American abstract painter whose vibrant large-scale paintings and site-specific installations mirror the mixed realities of life—and Alexi Worth, the acclaimed critic and painter whose work explores what it means, in our digitally supersaturated environment, for pictures to be “mindmade and handmade.” Contributing artists: Joseph Keckler, Veterinarian, The Dave Brubeck Quartet. With Matt's dad in declining health, Jeff suggested that today's album should be "one for Dad." We discuss Dave Brubeck's Buried Treasures, an archival release which was originally recorded across three nights in Mexico City back in May of 1967. Notably, Dave took the stage with his quartet, featuring legendary saxophonist Paul Desmond, bassist Eugene Wright and drummer Joe Morello. As Brubeck writes in the liner notes, the concerts were recorded for Bravo! Brubeck!, an album that had a "Latin American themed" concept. Bravo! Brubeck! was released that same summer and the concept for the record meant that anything that didn't fit the theme was left on the shelf. Which means a lot of material went unheard for years. The Buried Treasures release gave Brubeck fans a fresh round of cuts from what had been an extremely inspired run of shows. The liner notes, written by Brubeck, offer an extensive look behind the curtain of the performances. A separate booklet details Brubeck's history with Columbia Records. All of this makes for a fascinating journey into the world of Dave Brubeck if you're up for the trip. But that's just one part of today's episode. We discuss a number of different topics, including dads and parents in general, the sacrifices they make that we often don't know about until years later -- and getting a chance to repay the gifts. Some debts can never be truly repaid, but the gratitude lasts a lifetime. This one's for you, Dad.P.S. Get yourself a copy of Philip Clark's book, Dave Brubeck: A Life in Time. It's a must.

The Dave Brubeck Quartet is our Jazz Feature from a live concert from The College of the Pacific on Dec. 14,1953 with Paul Desmond on alto saxophone, Ron Crotty on bass and Joe Dodge on drums playing his very first gig with the band. This concert was special for Brubeck as it was at his alma mater. Desmond in particular loved the acoustics of the hall too as it brought out special properties of his alto saxophone. Brubeck, with the help of his wife, Iola had opened the doors in the early 1950s to presenting Jazz to college audiences and he had done a few cross country tours at universities throughout the nation. But this was a special one. A classic album had been released with 6 selections from the concert and is now along with an album recorded at Oberlin University, two of Brubeck's finest from his early years. This album is from the College of the Pacific concert but it never saw the light of day for over 50 years and is a series of great tunes.! An undiscovered treasure will be heard tonight. This is a further continuation of this month's Jazz Features with previously unreleased or undiscovered recordings this one has the Brubeck quartet at it's early best.
Today, from the 1940s and 50s, we have Nat King Cole, Sonny Stitt, Herbie Nichols, Ella Fitzgerald & the Oscar Peterson Trio, and the Dave Brubeck Quartet. The selections from the 1960s are performed by Cannonball Adderley & Bill Evans, Gerry Mulligan, Earl "Fatha" Hines & Johnny Hodges, and Claude Bolling. Then we'll hear from Pedro Iturralde with Donna Hightower, Charlie Byrd and The Washington Guitar Quintet, Milt Buckner, and Houston Person.

Tonight: Quintetto Ritmico di Milano, Italian jazz from the 1940s; then 1957 to 1965 with Teddy Wilson, Louis Armstrong & Oscar Peterson, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Art Pepper, Carmen McRae, Oscar Peterson, and Chico Hamilton; and then we take it out with a late-career pairing of the Dave Brubeck Quartet with Jim Hall in 2007.
A very special meeting tonight as our Jazz Feature. One of the greatest of Jazz singers was Carmen McRae and the iconic Dave Brubeck Quartet in a live recording done in New York at the prestigious club "Basin Street East" in September of 1961. Carman was intrigued and wanted to sing something different and Brubeck wrote a bunch of melodies that she loved and Brubeck's wife Iola put lyrics to the tunes and Carmen was hooked. It was a very different venture from singing Gershwin and porter standard tunes. Carmen performs twelve wonderful pieces with Dave and the Quartet with Paul Desmond on alto saxophone, Eugene Wright on bass, Joe Morello on drums before a very appreciative audience. The result was issued on Columbia Records and called "Take Five" and yes that tune by Paul Desmond comes complete with lyrics! Tonight's special Jazz Feature...check it out!

Noel Paul Stookey, the Paul of Peter, Paul & Mary, not only rode the folk wave of the early 1960s with such indelible songs like "Puff the Magic Dragon," "If I Had a Hammer" and helping popularize a young Minnesotan bard who went by the stage name of Bob Dylan, but helped created it. He shares the iconic trio's origin story as well as his own, and the many memories of a life, well lived, in music. Peter, Paul & Mary's long, legendary career was cut short with Mary Travers' tragic death in 2009, but their place in the cultural zeitgeist is eternal. Noel, a part-time Ojai resident, joins us to talk about his new album, "Fazz: Now & Then" and to reflect on the experience of collaborating with fellow musicians during the pandemic to create this nuanced, wide-ranging collection of 20 original songs with talented musicians such as Kent Palmer, Paul Sullivan, David LaPlante and Edward Mottau. We did not talk about whirling dervishes, James Beard or "The Slap Heard 'Round the World."

"We dance for laughter, we dance for tears, we dance for madness, we dance for fears, we dance for hopes, we dance for screams, we are the dancers, we create the dreams.” -Albert Einstein Even though we are coming out of this pandemic, seems like yesterday and it seems like a lifetime when things were shut down and we were navigating and figuring things out. Regardless of circumstances, life requires us to navigate change and figure things out. As I've been navigating my journey coming back to dance in 2014 after two decades, it didn't dawn on me that dance has been a huge component of my healing process in dealing with the negative relationship I had with myself and in turn how that affected my relationship with others. During the pandemic I had a delightful exchange with dancer, choreographer, somatic and creative recovery coach Morgyn Danae and I am happy to share this conversation that reminded me of the healing and meditative benefits of dance and movement. 3 Takeaways from this session: Dance and movement are meditation. Meditation comes in different forms and can be experienced in different ways. Trauma is stored in the body and there are methods to address and release trauma. Dance, movement and meditation go beyond the aesthetic and performative aspects. Dance is a healing art. The Groovy Guys dig deep into their collections to try and settle on the ultimate Saturday night spins. It's an ecclectic bunch of albums, featuring Kanye West's hit machine 'Graduation', Curtis Mayfield's soulful sophmore album 'Roots', a tribute to the late, great Charlie Watts through the Rolling Stones' 'Exile on Main St.' and a passionate declaration for Dave Brubeck Quartet's timeless classic 'Time Out'. Glen sets the gang the unenviable task of trying to settle on which AC/DC singer did it best - Bon Scott or Brian Johnson. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/crate-expectations/message
