Xmas time is here! So we're bringing our annual Yuletide gifts to you in the form of rockin' and poppin' tunes. The first present under the tree is "I Want a Beatle For Christmas" by Patty Surbey & The Canadian VIPs. Requests for people put Santa Claus in an awkward position. The next gift is "Deck Five" by Saturday's Children. We think this one should be more well-known: it joins "Deck The Halls" with Dave Brubeck Quartet's "Take Five" and ... it works? Sometimes you get an inappropriate gift, and Bey Ireland's "All I Want For Christmas is a Go-Go Girl" is this year's example. It's a weird fusion of Northern Soul and lounge crooning ... Let's forget about all that and get back to the real Goofy Greats - "The Wildest Christmas" by The Rumbles Ltd. Santa makes an appearance in this one, and he sounds like Classy Freddie Blassie! And there's even a final stocking stuffer, so tune in to hear what it is - jing a linga, jing jing a linga!

On this episode of Vinyl Verdict, Bell, Jamie and Adam listen to Jamie's next pick, The Dave Brubeck Quartet's "Time Out". Released in 1959, it was the thirteenth album released by the Quartet, and was their most successful album. After taking a trip with the US State Department on a trip of Eurasia, Dave Brubeck discovered the street music of Turkey and their use of time signatures that would be unusual in jazz. "Time Out" features 7 songs with odd time signatures, including Take Five, the best selling jazz single of all time. But what will the boys think of the album? Come along and find out! And also listen to Adam get increasingly frustrated with Bell and Jamie.

‘The Dave Brubeck Quartet, Live From The Northwest, 1959' is a collection of never-before-released recordings from the archives of Brubeck Editions of two electrifying concerts recorded on April 4, 1959 at the historic Multnomah Hotel in Portland and on April 5th in the auditorium at nearby Clark College.  The legendary quartet of Dave Brubeck on piano, alto saxophonist Paul Desmond, bassist Eugene Wright, and drummer Joe Morello are further testament to their unprecedented skills. What master sound engineer, Wally Heider, was able to capture from these diverse and challenging venues  are two performances that embody the very sound of the Dave Brubeck Quartet that audiences first fell in love with - described as “lightning in a bottle.”   We talk with multi-instrumentalist and Grammy-nominated composer, Chris Brubeck, about discovering this stellar collection in the archives, the backstory of how it happened, and why Brubeck Editions chose it as the label's third release in continuing the legacy of Dave Brubeck.

Here's a reboot of a fan favorite: Noel Paul Stookey, the Paul of Peter, Paul & Mary. He not only rode the folk wave of the early 1960s with such indelible songs like "Puff the Magic Dragon," "If I Had a Hammer" and helping popularize a young Minnesotan bard who went by the stage name of Bob Dylan, but helped created it. He shares the iconic trio's origin story as well as his own, and the many memories of a life, well lived, in music. Peter, Paul & Mary's long, legendary career was cut short with Mary Travers' tragic death in 2009, but their place in the cultural zeitgeist is eternal. Noel, a part-time Ojai resident, joins us to talk about his new album, "Fazz: Now & Then" and to reflect on the experience of collaborating with fellow musicians during the pandemic to create this nuanced, wide-ranging collection of 20 original songs with talented musicians such as Kent Palmer, Paul Winter, Paul Sullivan, David LaPlante and Edward Mottau. Fazz, as Noel explains, was christened by Paul Desmond of the Dave Brubeck Quartet to explain Peter, Paul & Mary's distinct fusion of jazz and folk. Noel picks up the resident Ojai podcast guitar (be still, my heart) to explain the shadings of alternate chord structures that inform much of the color of the album, as illustrated by the A Major, and the A Major 7th, its "smoky, mysterious cousin." Noel talks about writing "The Wedding Song: There is Love" - for Peter Yarrow's wedding, and his reluctance to perform it again until urged by Peter, and how it has made many, if not most, of the lists of most beautiful songs of all time, right up there with fellow Ojai resident Amanda McBroom's "The Rose." He also discusses his Christian faith and the epiphany he had at age 30 after a decade of fame, and the toll it took on his well-being. There's relevant folk music news: Noel's good friend John McCutcheon just released “Ukraine Now.” We did not talk about Ron DeSantis' fading aspirations, the Buffalo Bills abysmal overtime record or the enduring mystery of who ordered the hit on Tupac Shakur.

I'm In A Dancing Mood 2. Take Five (Toma alternativa) 3. Three To Get Ready (Toma alternativa) 4. With Matt's dad in declining health, Jeff suggested that today's album should be "one for Dad." We discuss Dave Brubeck's Buried Treasures, an archival release which was originally recorded across three nights in Mexico City back in May of 1967. Notably, Dave took the stage with his quartet, featuring legendary saxophonist Paul Desmond, bassist Eugene Wright and drummer Joe Morello. As Brubeck writes in the liner notes, the concerts were recorded for Bravo! Brubeck!, an album that had a "Latin American themed" concept. Bravo! Brubeck! was released that same summer and the concept for the record meant that anything that didn't fit the theme was left on the shelf.  Which means a lot of material went unheard for years. The Buried Treasures release gave Brubeck fans a fresh round of cuts from what had been an extremely inspired run of shows. The liner notes, written by Brubeck, offer an extensive look behind the curtain of the performances. A separate booklet details Brubeck's history with Columbia Records. All of this makes for a fascinating journey into the world of Dave Brubeck if you're up for the trip. But that's just one part of today's episode. We discuss a number of different topics, including dads and parents in general, the sacrifices they make that we often don't know about until years later -- and getting a chance to repay the gifts. Some debts can never be truly repaid, but the gratitude lasts a lifetime. This one's for you, Dad.P.S. Get yourself a copy of Philip Clark's book, Dave Brubeck: A Life in Time. It's a must.

The Dave Brubeck Quartet is our Jazz Feature from a live concert from The College of the Pacific on Dec. 14,1953 with Paul Desmond on alto saxophone, Ron Crotty on bass and Joe Dodge on drums playing his very first gig with the band. This concert was special for Brubeck as it was at his alma mater. Desmond in particular loved the acoustics of the hall too as it brought out special properties of his alto saxophone. Brubeck, with the help of his wife, Iola had opened the doors in the early 1950s to presenting Jazz to college audiences and he had done a few cross country tours at universities throughout the nation. But this was a special one. A classic album had been released with 6 selections from the concert and is now along with an album recorded at Oberlin University, two of Brubeck's finest from his early years. This album is from the College of the Pacific concert but it never saw the light of day for over 50 years and is a series of great tunes.! An undiscovered treasure will be heard tonight. This is a further continuation of this month's Jazz Features with previously unreleased or undiscovered recordings this one has the Brubeck quartet at it's early best.

A very special meeting tonight as our Jazz Feature. One of the greatest of Jazz singers was Carmen McRae and the iconic Dave Brubeck Quartet in a live recording done in New York at the prestigious club "Basin Street East" in September of 1961. Carman was intrigued and wanted to sing something different and Brubeck wrote a bunch of melodies that she loved and Brubeck's wife Iola put lyrics to the tunes and Carmen was hooked. It was a very different venture from singing Gershwin and porter standard tunes. Carmen performs twelve wonderful pieces with Dave and the Quartet with Paul Desmond on alto saxophone, Eugene Wright on bass, Joe Morello on drums before a very appreciative audience. The result was issued on Columbia Records and called "Take Five" and yes that tune by Paul Desmond comes complete with lyrics! Tonight's special Jazz Feature...check it out!

Noel Paul Stookey, the Paul of Peter, Paul & Mary, not only rode the folk wave of the early 1960s with such indelible songs like "Puff the Magic Dragon," "If I Had a Hammer" and helping popularize a young Minnesotan bard who went by the stage name of Bob Dylan, but helped created it. He shares the iconic trio's origin story as well as his own, and the many memories of a life, well lived, in music. Peter, Paul & Mary's long, legendary career was cut short with Mary Travers' tragic death in 2009, but their place in the cultural zeitgeist is eternal. Noel, a part-time Ojai resident, joins us to talk about his new album, "Fazz: Now & Then" and to reflect on the experience of collaborating with fellow musicians during the pandemic to create this nuanced, wide-ranging collection of 20 original songs with talented musicians such as Kent Palmer, Paul Sullivan, David LaPlante and Edward Mottau. We did not talk about whirling dervishes, James Beard or "The Slap Heard 'Round the World."

Wow! It's been five years since Jeff and Richard sat down in front of a microphone and recorded their conversation about King Kong (1976.) 64+ episodes and more than 150 movies later, they're still plugging away at it. Who knows if they sound any better, but they're still having fun... . To celebrate, they concoct a theme for movies with the word "Five" in their titles: Five (1951), DImension 5 (1966), and Devil Times Five (1974.) "We dance for laughter, we dance for tears, we dance for madness, we dance for fears, we dance for hopes, we dance for screams, we are the dancers, we create the dreams.” -Albert Einstein Even though we are coming out of this pandemic, seems like yesterday and it seems like a lifetime when things were shut down and we were navigating and figuring things out.  Regardless of circumstances, life requires us to navigate change and figure things out. As I've been navigating my journey coming back to dance in 2014 after two decades, it didn't dawn on me that dance has been a huge component of my healing process in dealing with the negative relationship I had with myself and in turn how that affected my relationship with others. During the pandemic I had a delightful exchange with dancer, choreographer, somatic and creative recovery coach Morgyn Danae and I am happy to share this conversation that reminded me of the healing and meditative benefits of dance and movement.  3 Takeaways from this session: Dance and movement are meditation. Meditation comes in different forms and can be experienced in different ways. Trauma is stored in the body and there are methods to address and release trauma. Dance, movement and meditation go beyond the aesthetic and performative aspects. Dance is a healing art. "Dave Brubeck's defining masterpiece, Time Out is one of the most rhythmically innovative albums in jazz history, the first to consciously explore time signatures outside of the standard 4/4 beat or 3/4 waltz time. It was a risky move -- Brubeck's record company wasn't keen on releasing such an arty project, and many critics initially roasted him for tampering with jazz's rhythmic foundation. But for once, public taste was more advanced than that of the critics. Buoyed by a hit single in altoist Paul Desmond's ubiquitous "Take Five," Time Out became an unexpectedly huge success, and still ranks as one of the most popular jazz albums ever. That's a testament to Brubeck and Desmond's abilities as composers, because Time Out is full of challenges both subtle and overt -- it's just that they're not jarring. Brubeck's classic "Blue Rondo à la Turk" blends jazz with classical form and Turkish folk rhythms, while "Take Five," despite its overexposure, really is a masterpiece; listen to how well Desmond's solo phrasing fits the 5/4 meter, and how much Joe Morello's drum solo bends time without getting lost. The other selections are richly melodic as well, and even when the meters are even, the group sets up shifting polyrhythmic counterpoints that nod to African and Eastern musics. Some have come to disdain Time Out as its become increasingly synonymous with upscale coffeehouse ambience, but as someone once said of Shakespeare, it's really very good in spite of the people who like it. It doesn't just sound sophisticated -- it really is sophisticated music, which lends itself to cerebral appreciation, yet never stops swinging. Countless other musicians built on its pioneering experiments, yet it's amazingly accessible for all its advanced thinking, a rare feat in any art form. This belongs in even the most rudimentary jazz collection." - Steve Huey, All MusicSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/polyphonic-press1229/donations

“A blue note in a minor key—America has its secret sonic weapon—Jazz.” That was the headline in 1955 when the United States sent its top musicians overseas to promote democracy. They called them the Jazz Ambassadors—Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, and Dave Brubeck. Today, in honor of Dave Brubeck month (May 4 is Dave Brubeck day — that’s 5/4 named for the 5/4 time signature of take 5) the story of Dave Brubeck and the Jazz Ambassadors. In 1958, the Dave Brubeck Quartet embarked on a tour of Europe and Asia sponsored by the U.S. State Department. And a special interview with Dave Brubeck’s sons, Dan and Chris Brubeck and what it was like growing up with their very unusual and genius father. Excellent musicians in their own right, the two share intimate memories of their father and his legendary contributions to modern jazz. Featuring interviews with Keith Hatschek, Program Director for Music Management and Music Industry Studies at the University of Pacific; and Mike Wurtz, Assistant Professor and Head of Special Collections and Archives at the Holt-Atherton Special Collections at the University of Pacific Library. The archival recording of Dave Brubeck is from his interview with Monk Rowe from the Fillius Jazz Archive at Hamilton College. Produced by Brandi Howell for The Echo Chamber Podcast.

🔴 #Fitz39. Finally, a note on why sainthood doesn't mean perfection and why St. Joseph is the inspiration we need in 2021.    Visit: www.bornofwonder.com Music Credit: Blue Dot Sessions "Why We All Want to be Jo March" - https://www.bornofwonder.com/home/why-we-all-want-to-be-jo-march  Pope Francis' Apostolic Letter, With a Father's Heart - http://www.vatican.va/content/francesco/en/apost_letters/documents/papa-francesco-lettera-ap_20201208_patris-corde.html  "Audrey Hepburn's Favorite Song" by Paul Rogers - https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2021/02/08/audrey-hepburns-favorite-song  "The Quiet Wisdom of Audrey Hepburn" - https://www.bornofwonder.com/home/the-quiet-wisdom-of-audrey-hepburn  "Audrey" by the Dave Brubeck Quartet - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06u6wwwKlno

From the publisher: In 2003, music journalist Philip Clark was granted unparalleled access to jazz legend Dave Brubeck. Over the course of ten days, he shadowed the Dave Brubeck Quartet during their extended British tour, recording an epic interview with the bandleader. Brubeck opened up as never before, disclosing his unique approach to jazz; the heady days of his "classic" quartet in the 1950s-60s; hanging out with Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Louis Armstrong, and Miles Davis; and the many controversies that had dogged his 66-year-long career. Alongside beloved figures like Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra, Brubeck's music has achieved name recognition beyond jazz. But finding a convincing fit for Brubeck's legacy, one that reconciles his mass popularity with his advanced musical technique, has proved largely elusive. In Dave Brubeck: A Life in Time, Clark provides us with a thoughtful, thorough, and long-overdue biography of an extraordinary man whose influence continues to inform and inspire musicians today. Structured around Clark's extended interview and intensive new research, this book tells one of the last untold stories of jazz, unearthing the secret history of "Take Five" and many hitherto unknown aspects of Brubeck's early career - and about his creative relationship with his star saxophonist Paul Desmond. Woven throughout are cameo appearances from a host of unlikely figures from Sting, Ray Manzarek of The Doors, and Keith Emerson, to John Cage, Leonard Bernstein, Harry Partch, and Edgard Varèse. Each chapter explores a different theme or aspect of Brubeck's life and music, illuminating the core of his artistry and genius. To quote President Obama, as he awarded the musician with a Kennedy Center Honor: "You can't understand America without understanding jazz, and you can't understand jazz without understanding Dave Brubeck." Martin's interview with Philip Clark was recorded on March 11, 2020.

I'm PC and this is the VE Peter Gabriel: Rhythn Of The Heat Joni Mitchell: The Jungle Line The VE with powerful drumming at the heart of Joni Mitchell's "The Jungle Line" from The Hissing Of Summer Lawns from 1975, and Peter Gabriel with "Rhythm Of The Heat," off Security in 1982. Rhythm, melody and harmony--that's what music is made of. But rhythm comes first...in life too...the beating of our mother's heart in the womb programs us to order our world with rhythm. Around the same time, clarinet-competitor Woody Herman billed his orchestra as "The band that plays the blues," and his drummer, Frank Carlson, laid a hypnotic rhythm down for "The Golden Wedding." The Dave Brubeck Quartet had by 1958 a very stable personnel in Paul Desmond on alto saxophone who was there from the outset and Brubeck himself on piano. Many bassists and drummers passed through the Quartet but Eugene Wright (aka "The Senator") was the permanent bassist and the virtuoso drummer, Joe Morello was on board too. They remained together until the breakup of the Quartet in 1967. Brubeck had been immensely popular since 1954 but some changes were taking place. The Quartet's repertoire had with a few exceptions been made up of standards from the Great American Songbook done up Brubeck style. However Brubeck began writing more and more originals and using different time signatures. This new move culminated in this classic album. It was done over 3 sessions in June, July and August of 1959. When the album was released it became an instant hit and best seller. 6 compositions were written by Brubeck but Paul Desmond contributed the smash it....."Take Five". As we are looking back to that classic year 60 years ago in 1959 this famous date is our second Jazz Feature. Like our first which was Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue" this album reached many household collections of people who were casual or eclectic music lovers. In other words it transcended the "Jazz" category. It remains a best seller 60 years later and is always worth a visit. Tonight is "Time Out" time!

O'Rourke.

SUMMARYWhy do some puns strike us as clever, while others are plain old groaners? Martha and Grant puzzle over this question. Also, the difference between baggage and luggage, a royal word quiz, the "egg" in egg on, what to call someone who doesn't eat fish or seafood, Hawaiian riddles, and why we say "You bet your sweet bippy!" FULL DETAILSWhen President Barack Obama had the Oval Office redecorated in soft browns and beige, The New York Times headline read: “The Audacity of Taupe.” The hosts discuss how puns work, and what makes them clever. Martha recommends John Pollack's new book, The Pun Also Rises: How the Humble Pun Revolutionized Language, Changed History, and Made Wordplay More than Some Antics.http://www.thepunalsorises.com/What do you call someone who doesn't eat fish? A caller wants to know, but not because of dietary requirements. He's a string bass player who plays in an ensemble that's tired of being asked to perform Schubert's famous composition, the Trout Quintet.http://www.classicalnotes.net/classics/trout.htmlMartha and Grant tells him he has several options. Among them: non-pescatarian, anti-marinovore, anichthyophagist--and, of course, non-seafood eater. What's the difference between baggage and luggage? After all, it's not as if anyone confesses to having emotional luggage. The hosts conclude that usually the word “luggage” specifies the container, while “baggage” is more likely to refer to that which is lugged inside the container. Martha shares a quotation from Joseph Addison, no fan of puns: “If we must lash one another, let it be with the manly strokes of wit and satire: for I am of the old philosopher's opinion, that, if I must suffer from one or the other, I would rather it should be from the paw of a lion than from the hoof of an ass.”Quiz Guy Greg Pliska has a royal quiz in honor of the wedding of Kate Middleton and Prince William. He celebrates the wedding of the King and Queen with clues to answers that contain the letters "K" and "Q" next to each other. The answer to "The band that recorded 'Take Five,'" for example, is the "Dave BrubecK Quartet."Where'd we get a word like skyscraper? Martha explains the image literally refers to scraping the sky, but first applied to the topmost sail on a ship, and later to tall horses, and high fly balls in baseball. There are similar ideas in other languages, as in the Spanish word "rascacielos" and French "gratte-ciel." In German, the word is picturesque as well. It's “Wolkenkratzer,” which literally means "cloud-scratcher."Grant shares some fill-in-the-blank puzzles from a listener. For example, "There's one w______ on a u________" and "There are 5 d________ in a z_________ c__________."A listener remembers her mother used to say, "Your Monday is longer than your Tuesday." This phrase offered a subtle way to notify someone that her slip was showing. Other expressions convey that warning as well, including "Monday comes before Sunday" and "Saturday is longer than Sunday." Also, if someone whispers "Mrs. White is out of jail," it's time to check to see if your slip is showing. Ditto if you're told you have "a Ph.D.," but you've never earned that degree. In this case "Ph.D" stands for "Petticoat Hanging Down."Martha's been reading the Dictionary of Smoky Mountain English again, and stumbled across a synonym for "fried chicken." It's preacher meat.http://www.cas.sc.edu/engl/dictionary/"The Die is Cast" is the title of an episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. A listener and his wife disagree about what kind of "die" is meant here. It's not a reference to metallurgy -- it's a quotation attributed to Julius Caesar. When he crossed the Rubicon to lead a campaign against his enemies, he supposedly declared, "Alea jacta est." The word "alea," which refers to one piece of a set of dice, is an ancestor of the modern English word "aleatory," which means "by chance." What happens when a clock gets hungry? It goes back four seconds. Martha talks about how puns weren't always considered "bad." Cicero praised them as the wittiest kind of saying, and Shakespeare made plenty of them, for both serious and comic effect. In the early 18th century, though, things changed. Pamphlets with titles like "God's Revenge Against Punning" began appearing, and the great lexicographer Samuel Johnson denounced them as "the last refuge of the witless." Martha and Grant discuss why some puns work and others don't. Martha recommends John Pollack's observation in The Pun Also Rises describing how "for a split second, puns manage to hold open the elevator doors of language and meaning as the brain toggles furiously between competing semantic destinations, before finally deciding which is the best answer, or deciding to live with both."Where'd we get the expression You bet your sweet bippy!? It's from Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In, a zany television show from the late 1960s. The word "bippy," by the way, means "butt." The phrase "You bet your sweet bippy" is a linguistic descendant of earlier versions that go back to at least the 1880s, when phrases like "You bet your sweet life" were commonly used. http://www.museum.tv/eotvsection.php?entrycode=rowanandmarThe show also popularized such phrases as "Sock it to me!" and "Look that up in your Funk & Wagnalls."http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8iGvzmOoh3YWhy is Cairo, Ill., pronounced "KAY-roh"? Why do Midwesterners pronounce Versailles as "Ver-SALES" and the New Madrid Fault as "New MAD-rid"? Grant explains that these names are far removed from their earlier incarnations and function as a sort of shibboleth among the locals.Martha springs another pun on Grant: Knock-knock. Who's there? Tarzan. Tarzan who? “Tarzan Stripes Forever.”Why do we speak of trying to egg on a person, meaning to urge them to do something? Martha explains that the "egg" in this case has nothing to do with chickens. This kind of "egg" is derives from an old root that means to "urge on with a sharp object." It's a linguistic relative of the word "edge."Grant wraps up with some Hawaiian riddles from the book Riddling Tales From Around the World, by Marjorie Dundas, including this one:My twin was with me from the day I crawledWith me till the day I diei cannot escape himyet when storms come, he deserts mehttp://books.google.com/books?id=qnWz6zrE8RUC&pg=PA66&lpg=PA66&dq=%22My+twin+with+me+from+the+day+I+crawled%22&source=bl&ots=dTLR_OAxIm&sig=vvHKYEeCGLgl2SqLqqqpcOn8d_A&hl=en&ei=drrZTcbZEoeusAP9wtWFDA&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CBYQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=%22My%20twin%20with%20me%20from%20the%20day%20I%20crawled%22&f=false--A Way with Words is funded by its listeners: http://waywordradio.org/donateGet your language question answered on the air!
