James shares his personal journey of surrendering to his inner voice and the transformative power of embracing and trusting our creative impulses. Throughout this easy to listen to episode, they delve into the essence of creativity, its connection to consciousness and culture, and why it is so important to share our creative work, regardless of how imperfect we may believe it to be (and the incredible thing this can lead to for us) This episode will inspire you to trust in your innate creativity and contribute to a flourishing, interconnected world and maybe even nudge you to share some of your work bravely with the world.SHOW NOTESForget about waiting for perfection to knock on your door! Kate and guest James McCrae explore how the best creative journey is all about embracing the messy, beautiful chaos of creation. From memes to poetry to strategic wizardry, James McCrae brings a unique flair to the table that'll make you want to grab your own slice of the creative pie. Host Kate Shepherd sits down for a colourful, inspiring chat with James, a multi-talented creative based in Austin, Texas, known for his thought-provoking memes, insightful poetry, strategic expertise and popular books about creativity. Creativity isn't just a luxury reserved for the select "chosen few" it is actually baked right into our DNA. This episode explores how creativity is intrinsic to human existence, and offers us a clear pathway to purpose, authenticity and fulfillment. Despite societal conditioning and fears, both Kate and James both passionately advocate reconnecting with our deepest creative essence as a way to transcend some of the common limitations preventing lasting personal growth.Creativity also isn't just about making pretty things but is actually a deep dive into the very essence of who we are. James elaborates on the two main stages of creativity, likening them to the yin and yang aspects of existence. Through his forthcoming book, "The Art of You," he explores how creativity emerges from the depths of emotion and intuition, guiding individuals towards a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them. You'll be freshly inspired to trust in the creative process, regardless of whether you believe you have any talent or not. And Kate and James emphasize the importance of forgetting about external validation and instead focus on curiosity, self-expression and vulnerability so you can feel free to let your creative visions out into the light of day no matter how "good or bad", "weird or normal" they may seem to you. You'll be inspired to examine and explore your own creative impulses and probably have a brand new perspective on cultivating a culture of creativity and collaboration. If you've ever felt that spark of creativity bubbling up inside you but weren't sure how to set it free, then this episode is for you! So grab your headphones and get ready for an adventure that'll leave you feeling inspired, empowered, and ready to unleash your inner genius!Key Takeaways:Creativity as a Birthright: Kate and James underscore the innate creativity inside each and every one of us. She discusses the myriad ways in which to express a story, and the roadblocks she's faced during her career in attempting to shed light on certain difficult stories and realities. Laia tells us how her work has naturally veered towards a central theme: being a woman. Moreover, she explores with us what this means in the art world, discusses the roles of our institutions and the paradoxical fact that these very creative institutions are sometimes averse to work that depicts themes that still create unease: abortion, rape. She shares with us the intricacies of her art and the challenges of working with subjects on such delicate issues. Burning Man is a unique experience that takes you deep inside and way out of your comfort zone.  It is an annual society experiment that happens on an ancient lake bed in Nevada. It is focused on creating a society where all are welcome and life is transformed into a place of freedom and generosity. Well, like in society they lift a few things out.  Radical inclusion seemed to stop at the diversity of thought. Going in 2012, I walked around wondering where were all the black and brown people. Years later the question turned into a quest and projects like The Black Burner Project were birthed. For the first time, I am having a black girl chat about Burning Man. We welcome Cassaundra Anthony for a 2 part conversation about our Burning Man experience. She founded the Women Photographers International Archive (WOPHA). While studying art history she noticed a gap in the curriculum that had failed to notice women in the history of Cuban Photography before the 90s. This has led to her ongoing research that aims to uncover some of this lost art and forgotten women photographers. In 1994, CAA's Committee on Women in the Arts held a panel chaired by Judith Stein that featured speakers Linda Nochlin, Ann Sutherland Harris, and Alessandra Comini. Their individual presentations look at the progress of women artists and art historians over the previous twenty years, since 1974. The talks use the exhibition, Women Artists 1550-1950, curated by Nochlin and Harris, as a benchmark for discussion. This landmark exhibition toured four American museums in 1976-77, such as the Brooklyn Museum in 1977, and raised public awareness of the many gifted women painters, sculptors, and architects. The talks in this session compare and contrast the attitudes that prevailed when the show was being organized with views in the nineties. Releasing these recordings of the session almost another twenty years later, it is an opportunity to reassess the status of women in the arts once again. Fifty years ago in 1972, CAA founded its first committees devoted to women in the arts. This year we celebrate the 50th anniversary of this history by sharing historic materials from CAA members and archives that intersect with feminism at the organization, CAA's Committee on Women in the Arts, and from its Affiliated Societies, the Women's Caucus for Art (WCA) and The Feminist Art Project (TFAP). CAA established the Committee on the Status of Women (COSW), the first committee to focus on women in CAA's history, in 1972. She is also a member of the Arts Club of Washington and the California Arts Club. "Since returning to the Washington D.C. area I have been focusing on creating a new and large body of work. My new series have taken me away from academic studies to more elaborate compositions which combine human and still life elements. In addition to this I now take on portrait commissions, and continue my studies in art by observing and copying the painting of the Old Masters in art galleries throughout the world. My work is about pleasing the eye. I paint light and the way it falls. Simple observation reveals beauty; often it is found in the unconventional. Because of this I have learned to take particular delight in unusual pairings of subject matter. Frequently my compositions are spontaneous. When a person comes to me, they occupy a space my mind. Arrangements form from there until with excitement I see and have the idea. The design is both planned and subconscious. For this reason I surround myself with Victorian and Baroque costume, bones, and other things which I find fascinating- I want subject matter to always be at hand. My paintings are created with oil paint on canvas. I am conscious of the traditional craftsmanship I have attained in Florence. While my interest in new pigments and tools may cause minor alterations in my materials, these really remain fundamentally the same. All my evolution is taking place on the canvas and in my head; in what I see in nature and interpret in two dimensions on the picture plan. I have the fundamentals of design to work with when planning a painting. I make preparatory studies. I use multiple layers to build an illusion of light and form. When this illusion is convincing and to my taste, the painting is done." -Teresa
