The music of professional harmonica jazz musician, bandleader, composer, and educator, Yvonnick Prené , is both unique and innovative. A transplant from France, Yvonnick is now based in the greater New York City area. He made his professional debut in France in 2007. But it wasn't until moving to the Big Apple that Yvonnick had that “wake-up call” to really learn the art of jazz by furthering his educational pursuits, immersing himself in the New York jazz scene, and eventually honing his chops to become the widely recognized and skilled band leader he is today. This fascinating musician has now released seven albums as leader, including his latest project , a duo recording with piano virtuoso Geoffrey Keezer, called “Jobim's World.” In this episode, we take a look at the compelling backstory behind Yvonnick's musical journey, and hear samples of his most recent and exquisite new release on Sunnyside Records.

Is “Tough Love” outdated? Or is it the tool of caring parents and educators? Recently, a “Facebook post dialogue” of sorts went viral amongst music educators between Juilliard professor Geoffrey Keezer and James Falzone. Professor Keezer made a relatively short post related to the problems he is seeing in his teaching position related to reliability … Continue reading "Episode 189: Can We Meet Kids Where They Are Without Lowering Standards? Adam responds to Geoffrey Keezer's (Julliard music professor and accomplished pianist) viral Facebook post asserting that today's music students can't be bothered with attending early morning classes, and often use lame excuses for missing things or being unprepared. "How will they be able to make a 6am lobby call on tour?" he asks - Meckler breaks down things that resonate with him as a university professor, and things that seem to be missing the mark, or missing completely from Keezer's rant.Read the original post here: https://www.facebook.com/OfficialGeoffreyKeezerAdam also discusses the Mechanical Licensing Collective's recent announcement that they will be suing Pandora for underpaying artist royalties.-------Download Gig Boss app: https://linktr.ee/gigbossJoin the Gig Boss Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/gigboss-----------------------------Interested in hearing music made by our awesome guests? Geoffrey Keezer shows you how to spice up your solos by switching up the rhythm.=====================================================(piano music)- Hey, this is Geoffrey Keezer for Two Minute Jazz. I'm gonna talk to you about alternating between triplets and sixteenth notes. Now this is something you can do in your solos to really give some rhythmic spice, so you're not just playing eighth notes all the time. An easy way to practice, you know, get a little metronome like this, start slow, you can just do scales.(piano music)Right? Or you can do any combination of that.(piano music)But the main thing is just lock it in with that metronome, so when you're playing with a real drummer, you're locked in with the drummer's groove. You know, and then you can speed it up. Always start slow, and then go faster.(piano music)So in the context of jazz.(piano music)=====================================================Want more piano lessons with Geoffrey Keezer? Two Jazz Features are happening tonight....Ladies and gentlemen A DOUBLE FEATURE! As we were unable to broadcast live last week due to bad weather we are here live tonight and last week's planned Jazz Feature is on tap tonight. Canadian trumpet virtuoso Ingrid Jensen has a new album out and it's a beautiful tribute to the late great composer Kenny Wheeler. Ingrid and tenor saxophonist Steve Treseler, who doubles on clarinet and bass clarinet teams with Ingrid and piano giant Geoffrey Keezer, bassist Martin Wind and drummer Jon Wikan plus a cameo appearance by Ingrid's talented sister Christine on soprano saxophone in a series of Wheeler compositions. The music is fresh and vibrant and recently recorded in 2018 for the Whirwind label. "Invisible Sounds for Kenny Wheeler" explores the many lyrical, poignant and energetic compositional explorations by the immortal Kenny Wheeler. Our second Jazz Feature is called "Joe Henderson in Japan". It features the tenor saxophone giant at his very best supported by a Japanese rhythm section. It was recorded live in a small club full of very vocal enthusiasts. Joe was happy with the band and the audience ambiance and delivered one of his finest performances on record. For years on the domestic recording, only 4 lengthy tunes were issued but tonight we hear the deluxe edition with 5 tunes. Of the many many albums by Joe Henderson, this one stands near the top. Joe, of course was along with Wayne Shorter in the 1960s was someone who set the standard for tenor saxophone playing and he is still very influential today despite his passing in 2001 at age 64. Joe Henderson in Japan....don't miss this one! Tonight's DOUBLE FEATURE! TWO FOR THE PRICE OF ONE!
Geoffrey Keezer provides some insight into how he emulates bass players with his left hand.Check out Geoffrey's course, Advanced Jazz Piano Concepts, at https://www.openstudionetwork.com/project/ajp-overview/=====================================================(jazz piano music)- Hey, this Geoffrey Keezer for 2 Minute Jazz. I'm gonna talk about playing bass lines with your left hand really briefly. I feel like when I listen to music, my hands, my right hand might be listening to the right hand solos of Herbie or Bud Powell or Chick or Wynton Kelly or McKoy, but my left hand, at the same time, is listening to the bass line. My left hand is checking out Ray Brown and Paul Chambers and Bootsy Collins and Jaco Pastorius and guys like that. When I sit down to play solo piano, my left hand is actually thinking like a bass player. This kind of bass line I'm playing on The Nearness of You is kind of a hybrid of something Ray might play and a Jaco-ish kind of thing.(jazz piano bass line)So when I got to the diminished cord(piano melody with right hand)I did a thing that Ray Brown did(funky bass line)That lick based on the diminished scale, but these are all things that creative bass players play. So, in addition, when you're transcribing don't just transcribe the right hand piano solos but actually transcribe what bass players are doing, what the horn players are doing, what the singer's doing, what the drummers are doing. All these kind of ensemble ideas you can work into your solo piano playing and it's gonna give it an extra dimension and more depth. It's gonna build up your left hand and make it stronger at the same time.(jazz music featuring piano)=====================================================#2minjazz #openstudio #geoffreykeezer #jazz #piano #basslines #lefthandWebsite: https://www.openstudionetwork.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/heyopenstudioTwitter: https://twitter.com/HeyOpenStudioFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/HeyOpenStudio See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Geoffrey Keezer shows you how dynamics can add excitement to your performances.Check out Geoffrey's course, Advanced Jazz Piano Concepts, at https://www.openstudionetwork.com/project/ajp-overview/=====================================================(piano music) - This is Geoffrey Keezer for Two Minute Jazz. I'm going to talk to you a little bit about dynamics. Now, in addition to having a strong groove and great information, you know, creative, improvisational ideas, if you bring some dynamics into your playing, it's going to give your music that much more drama and excitement and really take it to the next level. I'll do things in my playing where, I'm playing nice and strong and loud and all of a sudden, you just drop it down to a whisper. These were techniques that, like, the Count Basie Band would use to great effect, or Ellington. Oscar Peterson Trio, you hear them doing that too, where they're just cranking along and they're like, ping ding, ding, just stop. And that, not only makes for good music, but it makes for good entertainment. It makes it fun to listen to, from an audience perspective. Because it's something unexpected. See where you can work in dynamics and drama and all those kinds of things, when you're playing.=====================================================Want more piano lessons with Geoffrey Keezer? The Hot Box opens the file labelled K! Yes, the great endeavour of trawling the files of piano players has got as far as the letter K this time around, and a bumper file it is too. Not dominated by a single “Big Name”, (J for Jarrett!) but a great representative sample of some of the best pianists around today. You'll hear Dave Kikoski, the incredible Geoffrey Keezer, Frank Kimbrough among others from the current crop, and reaching back a bit Roger Kellaway and the late Wynton Kelly. And of course, the K file also contains the much missed pianist from Dublin, the late Noel Kelehan. So tune in and enjoy.
What happens if you dare to dream, write down your dream, talk about it and then walk it out? You'll win! With his highly regarded discography, unique compositions, and acclaimed performances in a variety of configurations, pianist Geoffrey Keezer commands the attention typically reserved for the living legends of jazz. Whether recording with jazzy chanteuses Diana Krall or Dianne Reeves, touring with trumpet king Chris Botti, or collaborating with pop icon Sting, sax legend Wayne Shorter, guitar wizard Jim Hall, star bassist Christian McBride or vibes master Joe Locke, Geoffrey "has more than enough virtuosity and sheer musical wit and intelligence to weave all of his apparently disparate strands of influence into an original and compelling whole" (Time Magazine). A native of Eau Claire, WI, Keezer was playing in jazz clubs as a teenager, holding down the piano chair for Art Blakey at age 18, and touring in the company of Joshua Redman, Benny Golson and Ray Brown in his 20s. More recently he has toured with David Sanborn, Chris Botti, Joe Locke and Christian McBride; worked with vocalist Denise Donatelli on projects garnering three GRAMMY® nominations, and released a series of albums drawing influences from Hawaiian, Okinawan and Afro-Peruvian folk traditions. Perhaps the most exciting turn in Geoffrey's career is his recent focus on solo piano and his first solo release in thirteen years, Heart of the Piano (2013, Motema Records). On a mission to redefine solo jazz piano as a personal and interactive showcase of melody, energy and groove, Keezer brings to Heart of the Piano his most direct and focused artistry to date. Barely into his 40s, Geoffrey Keezer's singular style of intellectually abstract lyricism woven over exotically complex rhythms and harmonies makes him one of the most sought-after artists on the modern jazz scene. Regardless of the nature of his projects, from solo to duo to quartet, from bandleader to big band, from post bop jazz to electronica to global fusion, from composer to arranger, Geoffrey delivers music from the heart of the piano to the ear--and heart--of the listener.

**SPECIAL DATE AND TIME: Monday October 12th, 2009 at 7:00 p.m.EST** Beginning in 1989, this Philadelphia-born bassist moved to New York City to further his classical studies at the Juilliard School, only to be snatched up by alto saxophonist, Bobby Watson. Since then, McBride's list of accomplishments have been nothing short of staggering. As a sideman in the jazz world alone, he's worked with the best of the very best - Freddie Hubbard, Sonny Rollins, J.J. Johnson, Ray Brown, Milt Jackson, McCoy Tyner, Roy Haynes, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock and Pat Metheny. In the R&B world, he's not only played with, but also arranged for Isaac Hayes, Chaka Khan, Natalie Cole, Lalah Hathaway, and the one and only Godfather of Soul himself, James Brown. In the pop/rock world, he's extensively collaborated with Sting, Carly Simon, Don Henley, and Bruce Hornsby. In the hip-hop/neo-soul world, he's collaborated with the Roots, D'Angelo, and Queen Latifah. In many other specialty projects, he's worked closely with opera legend Kathleen Battle, bass virtuoso Edgar Meyer, the Shanghai Quartet and the Sonus Quartet. Since 2000, McBride has blazed a trail as a bandleader with the Christian McBride Band. McBride's fellow bandmates- saxophonist Ron Blake, keyboardist Geoffrey Keezer and drummer Terreon Gully - have sympathetically shared McBride's all-inclusive, forward-thinking outlook on music. Releasing two CD's - 2002's "Vertical Vision", and 2006's "Live at Tonic". www.christianmcbride.com. ***SHOW IS AT A SPECIAL DATE AND TIME: Monday October 12th, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. EST**
