The Jazz Podcast releases its 300th episode and we celebrate with Tim Garland, chatting about his new album. Mezzo is a 2026 duo album by Tim and American pianist Geoffrey Keezer, celebrating a 25-year collaboration. The album prominently features a rare mezzo-soprano saxophone—one of only 20 in the world—played by Garland, blending classical, folk, and jazz influences. Recorded in New York, the album includes originals and a unique cover of Chick Corea's "La Fiesta", which we feature as the first track on the show. Support the show

The music of professional harmonica jazz musician, bandleader, composer, and educator, Yvonnick Prené , is both unique and innovative. A transplant from France, Yvonnick is now based in the greater New York City area. He made his professional debut in France in 2007. But it wasn't until moving to the Big Apple that Yvonnick had that “wake-up call” to really learn the art of jazz by furthering his educational pursuits, immersing himself in the New York jazz scene, and eventually honing his chops to become the widely recognized and skilled band leader he is today. This fascinating musician has now released seven albums as leader, including his latest project , a duo recording with piano virtuoso Geoffrey Keezer, called “Jobim's World.” In this episode, we take a look at the compelling backstory behind Yvonnick's musical journey, and hear samples of his most recent and exquisite new release on Sunnyside Records.

Is “Tough Love” outdated? Or is it the tool of caring parents and educators? Recently, a “Facebook post dialogue” of sorts went viral amongst music educators between Juilliard professor Geoffrey Keezer and James Falzone. Professor Keezer made a relatively short post related to the problems he is seeing in his teaching position related to reliability … Continue reading "Episode 189: Can We Meet Kids Where They Are Without Lowering Standards? Adam responds to Geoffrey Keezer's (Julliard music professor and accomplished pianist) viral Facebook post asserting that today's music students can't be bothered with attending early morning classes, and often use lame excuses for missing things or being unprepared. "How will they be able to make a 6am lobby call on tour?" he asks - Meckler breaks down things that resonate with him as a university professor, and things that seem to be missing the mark, or missing completely from Keezer's rant.Read the original post here: https://www.facebook.com/OfficialGeoffreyKeezerAdam also discusses the Mechanical Licensing Collective's recent announcement that they will be suing Pandora for underpaying artist royalties.-------Download Gig Boss app: https://linktr.ee/gigbossJoin the Gig Boss Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/gigboss-----------------------------Interested in hearing music made by our awesome guests? Los Angeles-based pianist and composer Paul Cornish is a finalist for the 2023 American Pianists Awards. Hailing from Houston where he was a student at the prestigious High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, Cornish was one of seven jazz prodigies worldwide selected to be awarded a full fellowship to attend the esteemed Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz at UCLA. Here, he completed his master's degree and studied and performed with such renowned artists as Carl Allen, Jerry Bergonzi, Billy Childs, Herbie Hancock, Bob Hurst, Geoffrey Keezer, Dick Oatts, Chris Potter, Walter Smith and Terell Stafford.Cornish received the Los Angeles Jazz Society's 2020 New Note Commission and recently was awarded First Place in the Jacksonville Jazz Piano Competition and the 18th Street Arts Center's 2021 Make Jazz Fellowship. Describing his own playing, Keezer says that his natural tendency is to “throw in everything but the kitchen sink…all the time.” In this episode of LINER NOTES, Keezer talks about his development as a musician over the span of his career as well as the teaching and writing that are occupying his time while he waits for the return of normal life.
Two Jazz Features are happening tonight....Ladies and gentlemen A DOUBLE FEATURE! As we were unable to broadcast live last week due to bad weather we are here live tonight and last week's planned Jazz Feature is on tap tonight. Canadian trumpet virtuoso Ingrid Jensen has a new album out and it's a beautiful tribute to the late great composer Kenny Wheeler. Ingrid and tenor saxophonist Steve Treseler, who doubles on clarinet and bass clarinet teams with Ingrid and piano giant Geoffrey Keezer, bassist Martin Wind and drummer Jon Wikan plus a cameo appearance by Ingrid's talented sister Christine on soprano saxophone in a series of Wheeler compositions. The music is fresh and vibrant and recently recorded in 2018 for the Whirwind label. "Invisible Sounds for Kenny Wheeler" explores the many lyrical, poignant and energetic compositional explorations by the immortal Kenny Wheeler. Our second Jazz Feature is called "Joe Henderson in Japan". It features the tenor saxophone giant at his very best supported by a Japanese rhythm section. It was recorded live in a small club full of very vocal enthusiasts. Joe was happy with the band and the audience ambiance and delivered one of his finest performances on record. For years on the domestic recording, only 4 lengthy tunes were issued but tonight we hear the deluxe edition with 5 tunes. Of the many many albums by Joe Henderson, this one stands near the top. Joe, of course was along with Wayne Shorter in the 1960s was someone who set the standard for tenor saxophone playing and he is still very influential today despite his passing in 2001 at age 64. Joe Henderson in Japan....don't miss this one! Tonight's DOUBLE FEATURE! TWO FOR THE PRICE OF ONE!
The Hot Box opens the file labelled K! Yes, the great endeavour of trawling the files of piano players has got as far as the letter K this time around, and a bumper file it is too. Not dominated by a single “Big Name”, (J for Jarrett!) but a great representative sample of some of the best pianists around today. You'll hear Dave Kikoski, the incredible Geoffrey Keezer, Frank Kimbrough among others from the current crop, and reaching back a bit Roger Kellaway and the late Wynton Kelly. And of course, the K file also contains the much missed pianist from Dublin, the late Noel Kelehan. So tune in and enjoy.
