World-renowned saxophonist and Blue Note recording artist Walter Smith III is the model music educator and practitioner. This enormously talented saxophonist pursued music education as a profession as far back as high school. In this episode, Walter's storied career follows the path beginning with performing at McDonald's at age 7, to an exciting area of study at one of today's premier high schools, Kinder High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA) in Houston, Texas to leadership roles at Berklee College of Music, reflecting on experiences at the Thelonious Monk Institute (today, the Herbie Hancock Institute) and exciting tours with legends like Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock. Gender equity in jazz, a priority for Walter, is spearheaded by the Berklee Jazz and Gender Justice Institute, and innovations in jazz education promoting inclusivity. Walter touches on his transition from Boston to New York, emphasizing the interplay between performance and teaching. Walter Smith III just released his eleventh album as a leader. Our conversation on Strictly Jazz Sounds also takes a deep dive into three of us are from Houston and Reuben is not. This project includes three of his closest music cohorts who are three of the most accomplished and influential musicians in jazz today: Jason Moran-piano, Reuben Rogers-bass, and Eric Harland-drums. The music does not disappoint in any way. We listen to clips of selected tracks, discuss the music and the significance, if any, of the composition titles. Walter is/has been a member of many legendary and highly accomplished groups (recording and/or touring) including the Roy Haynes Fountain of Youth Band (Walter was fired when he decided to go to Los Angeles, California), Terence Blanchard Quintet, Jason Moran's In My Mind: Monk at Town Hall, Ambrose Akinmusire Quintet, and the Christian McBride “Situation”, He's also teamed up with Eric Harland's “Voyager”, the Bill Stewart Trio, Marquis Hill's “New Gospel Revisited”, and the Sean Jones Quintet among others. Thank you for listening to Strictly Jazz Sounds. You have a choice among many other jazz podcasts, yet you selected this one today. You have my appreciation for your time and interest. The fact that he grew up in Toronto is not necessarily crucial to understanding guitarist Matthew Stevens point of view. He's regarded to be one of "most exciting up-and-coming jazz guitarists" in his generation, in any part of the world. His songs and guitar playing are featured on albums by the likes of Christian Scott, Esperanza Spalding, Terri Lyne Carrington, Dave Douglas, Linda Oh, Harvey Mason. He has worked as a guitarist with producers Quincy Jones, Glen Ballard and Tony Visconti. As a producer himself, he worked on Esperanza Spalding's albums Exposure and the Grammy winning 12 Little Spells and on Terri Lyne Carrington's Grammy nominated album Waiting Game. In addition to his solo recordings, he has also made three albums with Walter Smith III who I spoke to recently: they call the project In Common, and on each record they call together a different collection of collaborators to round out the group. The most recent In Common project came out earlier this year on Whirlwind Recordings and features Dave Holland, Terri Lyne Carrington and Kris Davis. Matthew gets around. I think it's because he's so open, and so collaborative. He brings his personality to all his projects, but he's clearly also very sensitive and empathic. And maybe, just maybe, that has something to do with Canada. Describing his own musical development, he speaks very affectionately and knowingly about a whole community of guitar players in and around Toronto - a school of playing that I admit, I didn't know so much about before we talked. So many of the players he named share a kind of gentle, swinging sophistication, elegance but also a little bit of grit. I think Matt has applied some of that to his playing - he's certainly not afraid of some distortion - his sound is often very gritty - but even when he rocks out, I hope he'll forgive me for saying this - there's still a kind of gentleness to it. He's a nice guy, and it shows up in the music. We spoke recently about Canada, how the business of jazz has evolved in his lifetime, how the pandemic reoriented him both personally and musically, gear, practice, teaching, the local scenes in Toronto and Pittsburgh, and one of my favorite topics: what is production?

From an early age, Walter Smith III began taking music very seriously. “My first gig was playing at a McDonalds in Houston with another saxophone player. I took a solo on “Blue Bossa.” It was terrible. People clapped, and I figured if I could get away with that and get applause, how could I fail?” Although it may appear Smith is a new voice on the scene, he is widely recognized as an adept performer, accomplished composer, and inspired educator. This spring, Smith welcomes his newest release, In Common III. Saxophone icon Walter Smith III joins me for an extended hotel lesson on zombies, instagram, germs, learning tunes, getting the most out of education, and embarrassing ourselves in front of our heroes.
Support Burning Ambulance on Patreon Get the Burning Ambulance email newsletter Ambrose Akinmusire is a really fascinating trumpet player. He’s made five studio albums and one live album, all but one of them for Blue Note. He’s also recorded with Walter Smith III, with Archie Shepp, with Mary Halvorson as part of her group Code Girl, with Tarbaby, with Roscoe Mitchell, and he’s on Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly. His latest album, On the Tender Spot of Every Calloused Moment, is one of the best jazz records of 2020. I saw him perform the music at Winter Jazzfest in January of this year, which as you’ll hear in our conversation was actually something like a live rehearsal, because they went into the studio and recorded the album the day after the show. We talked about a whole range of subjects in this interview, I’m not even sure how to preface it all. We discuss his style on the trumpet, which is a little bit unorthodox and to my ear demonstrates a real mastery of the horn; we talk about each of his albums, including why he has occasionally taken several years off in between; we talk about political engagement and how his own life impacts the music he makes; and a whole lot more. I had a really good time talking to him, and I hope you’ll enjoy listening to our conversation. Another archived discussion, this time with a jet lagged (at the time of meeting in March of 2018) Romain Pilon. The french guitarist began his journey in Southeastern France at the base of the Rhone Alps; now Paris based. A Parisian in New York for a short while, he preceded his big apple residency with matriculation through Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. Credited as performing with Christian Scott, Esperanza Spalding, Warren Wolf, and Lionel Loueke, Pilon also has a number of recordings under his leadership featuring key collaborations with modern saxophone colossi Seamus Blake, Ben Wendel, and Walter Smith III. While the conversation preceded, a collaboration with Jeff Denson and Brian Blade yielded the trio recording, 'Between Two Worlds' released on Ridgeway Records in 2019. Much of which features Pilon's masterful and subtly sophisticated compositions. We speak with Romain about his formative years, alumni friendships, performance highlights, and his series of mini-lessons as found on YouTube and Instagram. Much of the music featured throughout the episode is culled from Romain Pilon's 2018 release, 'Copper' that was released shortly before our meeting. March 27, 2014 | Rob Hochschild Guitarist Matthew Stevens has built his reputation on and brought his unique sound to recordings by many of jazz's leading young artists—including Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah, Ben Williams, Walter Smith III, and Jacky Terrasson—but his forthcoming debut on Concord Records promises to have as great an impact as any of the many albums he has appeared on. According to All About Jazz, he has "an impassioned sense of commitment, (and) his solos build with a burning combination of inevitability and sheer unpredictability." Stevens will lead his quintet in a performance at Berklee on April 2, 2014, on NPR's The Checkout—Live at Berklee, in a concert that will be broadcast by NPR Music and WBGO-FM. This episode of Sounds of Berklee spotlights a Stevens recording from 2010 that also features Walter Smith III, Milton Fletcher, John Escreet, and Jamire Williams.
