Imagine you're traveling overseas and all your digital "stuff" is lost. What do you do? How do you reconnect?

I was going to talk about the time, when we went as a family to California, at the end of May in 1982. The occasion was an Elders Conference in Santa Cruz. We stayed with my parents and also drove up north to visit our church friends in Eureka. Looking at my photos I am reminded of those good old days, when my home state was beautiful and safe. For example today, the city of Oakland where I was born, and Thomas and I lived in, is listed as one of the most dangerous cities in the world.  Now at the beginning of this new year the world is watching in horror the devastation taking place in southern California. Whole communities, homes, property, lives, wildlife and much of the beauty of the city has been destroyed. Thousands of people will have to figure out how to rebuild their lives in the midst of chaos. This is a reminder for all of us, that nothing in the world lasts.  I don't usually talk about current world events, but it is no coincidence, that I just listened to an old sermon from Thomas. It was recorded in the summer of 1982, after we returned from California. He addresses the topic of finding security, confidence and identity when trials come upon us. What do we do if we lose everything; our home, our health, our job, and the stable life, we are accustomed to? Where can we find peace and hope for a new future?

As we reach the end of the liturgical year, our Scripture readings are taken from the apocalyptic sections of the Bible. The sections dealing with the "Apocalypse" have to do with the "unveiling" of reality to show the truth behind the surface. It would be a mistake for us to think that these passages are describing something in the future and thus irrelevant for us. In today's Gospel, after predicting the failure and collapse of the sun and moon and stars, Jesus says,  "This generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place." All of the orientation points of our own life, everything upon which will have relied in this life, save God, is going away. We will lose everything! But, "when you see these things happening, know that he, the Lord, is near, at the gates."

According to friends and allies of Donald Trump, the former president has basically resigned himself to having his properties seized to cover the cost of the fraud trial. But, as his allies point out, he's totally confident that he can get all of his properties back from the Supreme Court. This is a risky gamble, and there's actually very little chance that the Supreme Court could act on this before the properties are sold off. Also, legal experts are still in shock over the intentional incompetence of Judge Aileen Cannon and her brazen attempts to rig the trial in Donald Trump's favor. One legal expert went as far as to say that there is little doubt this is all being done intentionally. And it gets even worse than that - Cannon's insane jury instructions from this week were actually suggested by Trump's lawyers, giving us further proof that she's just doing what they tell her to do.And Donald Trump is about to be completely out of money - both personally and politically. A new report has revealed that Trump's main Super PAC spent an average of $230,000 per day for the month of February paying his legal fees, which is 50% more than they actually spent on campaigning. When combined with reports of Trump losing his donors at an alarming rate, this all spells disaster for him in the election.Finally,  a top psychiatrist is warning that the evidence of Donald Trump suffering dementia has become overwhelming, and the public and the media are ignoring this at their own peril. This is just the latest in a long line of mental health professionals warning us about the dangers that Trump's mental state poses to the country, and this is an issue that deserves far more attention than it is receiving. The clock is about to run out for Donald Trump to post the $464 million bond for his fraud trial appeal, and as that date grows closer and as he keeps getting rejected from bond insurers, the former president is descending deeper and deeper into madness. In a series of posts on Truth Social spanning the past few days, Trump has suffered a complete meltdown as he attacks prosecutors, judges, and the legal system as a whole. But none of that changes how screwed he is.Also, CNN reported this week that the Trump campaign is freaking out over the fact that he can't pay for his fraud trial bond, and in response the Trump campaign freaked out and attacked CNN. It became a self-fulfilling prophecy in a way. Trump's people angrily and profanely attacked CNN for their reporting, but their response really proved that there is a dire sense of panic permeating through the entire campaign. And Donald Trump has decided to prolong his feud with talk show host Jimmy Kimmel, taking some serious shots against him in a weekend interview that aired on Fox News. But Kimmel wasn't about to let Trump get the last word, so he dedicated part of a monologue this week to humiliating Trump once again over his outburst about Kimmel hosting the Oscars. This is another fight that Trump isn't going to win.Finally, Donald Trump is now running unopposed as the presumptive Republican nominee, and everything has gone badly for him since his last Republican opponents dropped out of the race. The increased media spotlight has given us countless horrific statements by Trump, including some fresh anti-semitism this week to go with his bloodbath comments over the weekend. Initially frustrated, I realized his tears were fatigue, not disobedience. That experience shifted my perspective, making me more empathetic. Now, in situations, even on the road, I pause before reacting. I consider the unknowns in people's lives—maybe a rough day or personal struggles. Unless it's unsafe, I avoid honking or road rage. Understanding that most are just trying to navigate their own challenges, I drive calmly, prioritizing safety over frustration. It's about seeing beyond the surface and acknowledging everyone's unseen battles. Thoughts On Breathing Exploring various breathwork sessions, I stumbled into an incredible journey. Witnessing people release trauma through breath amazed me. Encouraging others to dive in, I stress the need for skilled facilitators, not just online tutorials. While I've tried multiple sessions and even courses, I don't feel compelled; it's about aligning with my needs. Conscious breathing helps realign when feeling off. I've ventured into ice baths, inspired by experiences in Poland. From meeting Wim Hof to accidental swimsuit mishaps in freezing temperatures, the rush and energy from these experiences are unmatched. Despite the initial chill, the exhilaration afterward is worth every shiver, encouraging everyone to give it a try.   Bullying Story Growing up small in a tough neighborhood, I faced relentless bullying. Boxing helped, but I ended up becoming a bully myself at school. It felt like fighting back against the torment. Yet, even as I faced bullying, I learned to fight back, realizing that not backing down deterred some attackers. In one instance, eight guys set the papers I was about to deliver on fire, leading me to study martial arts. Through six years of practice, I grasped mindfulness, avoiding fights despite my ability. Confidence became my shield. I learned to defuse conflicts, standing my ground without aggression. It changed me, sparing others the pain I once felt and rejecting the cycle of bullying I'd briefly fallen into.
