Guitarist and producer Jason NeSmith talks about the newly released soundtrack to The Elephant 6 Recording Co. documentary and the late Will Cullen Hart
"Galaxy Quest," a film that transcends the traditional boundaries of sci-fi comedy, cleverly satirises the tropes of classic science fiction television series while simultaneously paying heartfelt homage to them. Directed by Dean Parisot and released in 1999, the movie stars an ensemble cast including Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub, Sam Rockwell, and Daryl Mitchell. It's a film that not only fans of sci-fi can appreciate but also offers plenty of laughs, excitement, and emotional depth for a broader audience. The premise of "Galaxy Quest" is both a parody and a tribute to the cult phenomenon of TV shows like "Star Trek" and their fervent fan bases. The story follows the washed-up cast of the fictional '80s television series "Galaxy Quest," who, decades after the show's cancellation, make their living through re-runs and sci-fi conventions. The twist comes when they are mistaken for real space heroes by an alien race, the Thermians, who have modelled their entire society on the "Galaxy Quest" TV series, believing the episodes to be historical documents.Tim Allen's portrayal of Jason Nesmith, who played the show's commander, Peter Quincy Taggart, is a standout. Allen captures the bravado and the vulnerability of a man struggling to reconcile his past glory with his present reality. Sigourney Weaver, as Gwen DeMarco, provides not only comic relief but also a strong and savvy presence, challenging the typical damsel-in-distress trope often seen in sci-fi. Alan Rickman, in the role of Alexander Dane, a classically trained actor who resents his typecasting as the alien Dr. Lazarus, delivers his lines with a delicious mix of disdain and despair, providing one of the film's most heartfelt performances. The brilliance of "Galaxy Quest" lies in its ability to poke fun at the clichés of the genre while also respecting the source material. The film cleverly uses the conventions of science fiction—such as teleportation, space battles, and alien encounters—to both parody and celebrate the genre. The Thermians, with their octopus-like true forms hidden beneath human exteriors, symbolise the sometimes awkward but genuine passion of the sci-fi fandom. Their naivety and earnestness in seeking the help of the "Galaxy Quest" crew to save their civilization from the malevolent warlord Sarris (played menacingly by Robin Sachs) add to the film's charm and humour. One of the movie's most significant achievements is its commentary on the nature of fandom and celebrity. "Galaxy Quest" depicts the actors' initial disdain for the conventions and the fans, seeing them as reminders of their failed careers. However, as the story progresses, they come to appreciate the impact their roles have had on their fans' lives, especially the Thermians. This evolution mirrors the journey many actors associated with typecast roles undergo, eventually embracing the love and adoration of the fan community. The screenplay, written by David Howard and Robert Gordon, balances the comedic and dramatic elements seamlessly, creating a narrative that is engaging and emotionally resonant. The dialogue is sharp, filled with memorable lines that have become quotable among fans. The visual effects, while not groundbreaking, effectively serve the story, adding to the film's charm rather than distracting from it."Galaxy Quest" also explores themes of identity, redemption, and the power of belief. Each character undergoes a personal journey, discovering their strength and value beyond their typecast roles. The film's climax, involving a "Galaxy Quest" convention, underscores the idea that belief in oneself and in others can lead to real-world heroism, a message that resonates well beyond the confines of the story. In retrospect, "Galaxy Quest" has grown from a cult classic into a beloved gem, appreciated for its witty satire, emotional depth, and loving tribute to the sci-fi genre and its fans. The film's enduring popularity is a testament to its quality, humor, and the universal appeal of its underlying themes. It serves as a reminder that, sometimes, to find our true selves, we need to embrace the roles we've been given, no matter how alien they may seem.In conclusion, "Galaxy Quest" stands as a pinnacle of sci-fi comedy, expertly blending satire, heart, and adventure. Its clever script, combined with strong performances from the cast, makes it a standout film that continues to entertain and inspire. Whether you're a die-hard sci-fi aficionado or simply in search of a film that offers laughs and a warm heart, "Galaxy Quest" is a journey worth taking. Its message of unity, understanding, and the transformative power of believing in one's self and others is as relevant today as it was at the time of its release. Long time artists, musicians and singer/songwriters, Peter Frizzante and Abby Amaya, initially met in New York City, but didn't start their indie-rock dreampop shoegaze band together until they moved to Asheville, North Carolina. Abby's roots are in California 60s coastal pop, while Peter's is post-punk, indie-rock. Working together, the now husband and wife team showcase their admiration for sun-soaked sonic landscapes, lo-fi lounge, neo-psychedelia, fuzzy guitars, jazz tones, and melodic pop structures. Reverb soaked and layered with soft whispery vocals, the result is an energetic and memorable reverie. Peter, the morning person, and Abby, the night owl -- their band name is a nod to their opposite sleep schedules. The pair is often writing music or lyrics at home in between work and daily chores, finding inspiration in the human condition and the pain and joy of life. The band has played with many different local drummers (Jake Cavinder, Matt Hendler, Mike Fasano) and bass players (Marcos Waldheim, Erik Jan, Lowell Hobbs, Matt Tobia, Daniel Hyman). Their first single, Nocturnal Creatures, was recorded at El Rancho Morbido Studios with Ryan Slagle (Black Mountain, NC) and debuted in July 2018. This was soon followed by their first full length album, “With Every Breath You Die” in February 2019, recorded at Standard Electric Studios with Engineer Damon Moon & mastered by Greg Hendler in Atlanta. They went back to the studio in July of 2019 to record a handful of tracks at Echo Mountain Studios (Asheville, NC). The singles were engineered by Kenny Harrington, mastered by Jason NeSmith of Chase Park Transduction Studios (Athens, GA) & Geoff Pesche of world renowned Abbey Road Studios (London). After canceling most shows booked for the last two years, the band has stayed busy indoors with numerous live streams & shooting music videos. They've had singles featured on several compilations: Green Witch Records (NYC), Sunday Records (Chicago), Stereoactive Media (Austin/Brooklyn), Shoegaze Pilipinas (Philippines), Holy Crap Records (Black Mountain, NC), Editoris (Panama), OIM Records (Oakland, CA), Bummer Recordings (Chattanooga, TN), and Shiny Happy Records (Indonesia). In 2021, they signed with Lilystars Records (ADA, Warner Music Group), owned by Clementine Castro (Oranges & Lemons, The Camerawalls). The band issued several singles: Rabbit Hole, Separation Anxiety, and a remix of Cabin Fever by indie-electropop legends, Sweet Trip. Their second album, "The Art of Remembering" (mixed & mastered by Chrisanthony Kryptoneum Vinzons), released in February 2022, followed by a bout of live shows. Day & Dream is an official 2022 SXSW artist. Please stay tuned for live show updates. Canadian born but raised in Ireland, Cormac Russell has taken his music across the globe, including tours in England and China. He released his acclaimed fourth album titled 'Ghost Town' last year, which won some very favorable reviews in the press, as well as airplay on national and international radio. He will be releasing his fifth LP titled 'The Year I Broke The Stars' on October 28th. Playing all the instruments himself, he draws from a wide range of influences; from indie contemporaries like Kurt Vile and Bill Callahan to literary giants like Whitman and Rimbaud.

In which the Mister and Monsters join me in reviewing GALAXY QUEST (1999), which we watched on STARZ, but available for rent on other platforms. With screenplay credits to David Howard and Robert Gordon, and directed by Dean Parisot; the film follows the story of actors from an old sci fi TV show, Galaxy Quest, who are at another Con, meeting fans and engaging in the same repetitive theater that comes along with this type of fame. However at one event, extraordinary events lead to this ragtag cast of actors to really learn the value of team work and for their leader played by Jason Nesmith (a very charming Tim Allen) to suddenly realize the true value of his fellow actors all the while saving Earth and the Thermians, all the while trying to get back in time to fulfill their obligations at the Con. A fun comedy that's all heart and fun family viewing - a definite MUST watch for any lover of comedy or just good storytelling. The film has a run time of 1 h 42 m and is rated PG. Please note there are SPOILERS in this review. Opening intro music: GOAT by Wayne Jones, courtesy of YouTube Audio Library. This week on the podcast, we're heeding the immortal words of Jason Nesmith— because we're watching the Power Rangers Wild Force episode “Never Give Up”! Is there a single brain cell in Danny's big head? Has this week's Org totally lost it? And how many times can they say the title of the episode? All these questions answered - and more - on this episode of Ranger Danger Wild Force!
This week Stu and James leave planet Pod and take to outer space to review Galaxy Quest - The sci-fi adventure series "Galaxy Quest" took place aboard the intergalactic spaceship NSEA Protector. Eighteen years after their series was canceled, actors Jason Nesmith, Gwen DeMarco, Sir Alexander Dane, Tommy Webber and Fred Kwan (along with Guy Fleegman) are making appearances in costume and character at sci-fi conventions and electronic store openings. The cast members are wallowing in despair and at each other's throats until aliens known as Thermians arrive and, having mistaken the series for reality and consequently modeling their entire culture around this, take them into outer space to save them from the genocidal warlord General Sarris.

We are taking the podcast back to the 1900s, but not by much. This week’s film was released in December of 1999, and none of us watched it until it hit on home video in the early 2000s. At least one of us got spoiled by one of the fancy features included with the DVD. All three of us find it difficult to believe that we’ve done 80 episodes and had not touched on this movie. Considering how much all of us love this movie. Galaxy Quest is rated PG and was released December 25 1999. The film stars Tim Allen as Jason Nesmith, Sigourney Weaver as Gwen DeMarco, Alan Rickman as Alexander Dane, Tony Shaloub Fred Kwan, Sam Rockwell as Guy Fleegman and Justing Long as Brandon. Back over to the US for episode #19 and a wonderful conversation with Pylon singer, Vanessa Briscoe-Hay. Also joined by producer and musician, Jason NeSmith, we take a look at Pylon's musical journey and influence as the band prepares to release a career-spanning anthology set, 'Box'. This is an inspiring conversation and stands as a wonderful example of how the most amazing music can emerge from open and honest collaboration and expression. Vanessa's story and that of Pylon and the roles which Jason now plays within it are wonderful to explore and then the song kicks in at the end.... amazing! Laredo and Fred Kwan as the sardonic, sarcastic Tech Sgt Chen.It might have been off-air, but the fans still love the historical documents. Especially the Thermian people, who take cosplay to a whole new level and recreate the ship, from scratch, and even include an authentic "bad guy". By Grabthar's hammer...what a movie! It's time for us to talk "Galaxy Quest," the definitive love letter to/paraody of "Star Trek!" Jason Nesmith, the washed-up, Shatner-esque lead of sci-fi series "Galaxy Quest" is unwittingly tasked by actual aliens who have based their entire society on his series to save their species from a genocidal alien warlord. He ropes his former castmates in, but they soon find that there's rather a big difference between playing and being space heroes. Boasting an impressive cast and a damn-near perfect script, "Galaxy Quest" has become a must-see for any "Trek" fan. Also this week: whitewashing, original cast and crew, and the importance of fandom.
"Galaxy Quest." - Not many people remember the ’80s sci-fi TV series “Galaxy Quest,” starring Jason Nesmith and Alexander Dane, let alone remember it with fondness. But we’ve assembled a panel full of Questarians who will change your mind. By Grabthar’s hammer, what a topic! Host Jason Snell with Erika Ensign, Glenn Fleishman, David J. Loehr, Scott McNulty and Joe Rosensteel.
