Michael Monks opens the show with a local sports update before diving into a sobering look at life in Los Angeles 100 days after the devastating fires. He contrasts Mayor Bass's optimistic public comments with growing frustration from Palisades residents who feel left behind. Michael investigates the $10 million contract with Hagerty Consulting that's yielded little visible recovery progress and speaks with resident David Howard about the city's red tape and broken promises. Plus, a new survey shows Angelenos are overwhelmingly unhappy with their quality of life.
David Howard's most visible credit is DreamWorks' major feature film, Galaxy Quest, the story and screenplay of which we discuss. He also has an arm's length of television and live theatre credits. But interestingly enough, this is not why he is on this podcast. This is why he is my guest. Galaxy Press is easily confused with Galaxy Quest, and I routinely hear the public at conventions tell their friends they are standing by the Galaxy Quest booth. So, David became an obvious great guest when the opportunity presented itself at the Life, the Universe and Everything Symposium in Provo, Utah. We discuss script writing, what works and what to avoid. But more to the purpose of this podcast, he is the author of a delightful YA fantasy called ‟Penumbra,” which we discuss in this interview.

This week, you're getting to hear a special bonus episode from our special Patreon miniseries "TCBCast After Dark." Justin is joined by Rabia and Felix of "Suddenly: A Frank Sinatra Podcast" for this discussion. There is a new introduction providing additional context. Aired in 1991, produced by Mel Bergman, "The Elvis Files" was a LIVE TV broadcast hosted by "Clambake" and "Speedway" co-star Bill Bixby presenting Elvis conspiracy theorist Gail Brewer-Giorgio's array of so-called "evidence," but here's the genuinely shocking twist out of all of this: one of the things they dug up from the FBI's declassified files on Elvis Presley was actually partly true. However, its association with the Elvis conspiracy world and it being used to claim that Elvis faked his death as an undercover agent has prevented the real, genuinely historical facts of how Vernon Presley was scammed out of nearly $400,000 in 1976 from being an integral part of the tellings of the last years of Elvis' life, making TCBCast first within the Elvis world to reintroduce it properly and give it serious attention. In this exciting episode, we explore the controversial decision to give fictional characters like Batman a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. We also dive into trailers for The Last of Us Season 2 and Marvel's Thunderbolts, along with discussions about DC's upcoming movie featuring Bane and Deathstroke. To wrap things up, we sit down with special guest David Howard, writer of Blood World: Phoenix Throne, to chat about world-building, storytelling, and his creative journey. Whether you're a superhero movie fanatic or a lover of sci-fi/fantasy worlds, this episode has something for everyone! Timestamps and Topics: 00:00 – Introduction and fictional characters on the Hollywood Walk of Fame 10:00 – The Last of Us Season 2 trailer and House of the Dragon critique 18:17 – Thunderbolts trailer and Marvel's grounded approach 22:56 – Bane and Deathstroke's DC movie: What we know so far 28:29 – Casting for Lanterns series and thoughts on Green Lantern in the DCU 34:14 – Live service games and the downfall of Concord 45:02 – Interview with David Howard on his new book Blood World: Phoenix Throne 59:04 – How David Howard blends fantasy, technology, and humanity in his world-building 01:19:00 – Closing remarks and October streaming recommendations Key Takeaways: The decision to give fictional characters stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame has sparked debate about prestige vs. commercialization. The Last of Us Season 2 trailer teases new characters and challenges, including potential comparisons to The Walking Dead. Marvel's Thunderbolts will showcase a grounded, spy-thriller vibe, expanding its universe with more anti-heroes and complex characters. DC is developing a movie featuring Bane and Deathstroke, which could offer a fresh villain-focused story for fans. Live service games continue to struggle with longevity; Concord is the latest example of a big-budget failure. David Howard's Blood World explores intricate world-building with elements of fantasy, technology, and deep storytelling. Quotes: “Giving Batman a star opens a whole new can of worms. What about Superman or Iron Man?” “Splitting The Last of Us Part 2 into multiple seasons feels like a risk, but it could pay off if done right.” “Marvel's Thunderbolts feels like the spy thriller we've been missing in the MCU. It brings the action but keeps the stakes grounded.” “In Blood World, I wanted to explore how humanity interacts with technology in a way that feels both futuristic and relatable.” – David Howard Call to Action: Enjoyed this episode? Dr. David Howard helps us get an overarching sense of the book of Judges as we head into our study this Fall. He begins with the theme of the book—the downward spiral of Israel's national and spiritual life into chaos and apostasy, showing the need for a godly king to lead it—and helps us to see how it was written in order to show the consequences of religious apostasy and to point the way to a king, who, if he were righteous, would lead the people to God. Dr. Howard teaches Old Testament and Hebrew courses in the M.Div. and M.A. programs at Bethlehem College and Seminary. Previously, he taught for 28 years at Bethel Seminary, where he is now Professor of Old Testament Emeritus.
David Howard comes on to discuss his current project Blood World: Phoenix Throne. His other comic OPSEC and prose novel The Long Game were talked about, along with collaboration, research and deep thinking processes. Pretty interesting. DOWNLOAD Blood World: Phoenix … Continue reading →

Before we all got obsessed with generative artificial intelligence, the technology world was obsessed with connecting everything to “the Internet of Things” – street lights, water sensors, buildings, locks, cameras, etc. Disruptions from the pandemic era quelled a lot of that movement, so where are IoT deployments happening now? Keith chats with David Howard, director of technical sales at Quectel and an industry leader on IoT matters, about where IoT stands these days.

"Galaxy Quest," a film that transcends the traditional boundaries of sci-fi comedy, cleverly satirises the tropes of classic science fiction television series while simultaneously paying heartfelt homage to them. Directed by Dean Parisot and released in 1999, the movie stars an ensemble cast including Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub, Sam Rockwell, and Daryl Mitchell. It's a film that not only fans of sci-fi can appreciate but also offers plenty of laughs, excitement, and emotional depth for a broader audience. The premise of "Galaxy Quest" is both a parody and a tribute to the cult phenomenon of TV shows like "Star Trek" and their fervent fan bases. The story follows the washed-up cast of the fictional '80s television series "Galaxy Quest," who, decades after the show's cancellation, make their living through re-runs and sci-fi conventions. The twist comes when they are mistaken for real space heroes by an alien race, the Thermians, who have modelled their entire society on the "Galaxy Quest" TV series, believing the episodes to be historical documents.Tim Allen's portrayal of Jason Nesmith, who played the show's commander, Peter Quincy Taggart, is a standout. Allen captures the bravado and the vulnerability of a man struggling to reconcile his past glory with his present reality. Sigourney Weaver, as Gwen DeMarco, provides not only comic relief but also a strong and savvy presence, challenging the typical damsel-in-distress trope often seen in sci-fi. Alan Rickman, in the role of Alexander Dane, a classically trained actor who resents his typecasting as the alien Dr. Lazarus, delivers his lines with a delicious mix of disdain and despair, providing one of the film's most heartfelt performances. The brilliance of "Galaxy Quest" lies in its ability to poke fun at the clichés of the genre while also respecting the source material. The film cleverly uses the conventions of science fiction—such as teleportation, space battles, and alien encounters—to both parody and celebrate the genre. The Thermians, with their octopus-like true forms hidden beneath human exteriors, symbolise the sometimes awkward but genuine passion of the sci-fi fandom. Their naivety and earnestness in seeking the help of the "Galaxy Quest" crew to save their civilization from the malevolent warlord Sarris (played menacingly by Robin Sachs) add to the film's charm and humour. One of the movie's most significant achievements is its commentary on the nature of fandom and celebrity. "Galaxy Quest" depicts the actors' initial disdain for the conventions and the fans, seeing them as reminders of their failed careers. However, as the story progresses, they come to appreciate the impact their roles have had on their fans' lives, especially the Thermians. This evolution mirrors the journey many actors associated with typecast roles undergo, eventually embracing the love and adoration of the fan community. The screenplay, written by David Howard and Robert Gordon, balances the comedic and dramatic elements seamlessly, creating a narrative that is engaging and emotionally resonant. The dialogue is sharp, filled with memorable lines that have become quotable among fans. The visual effects, while not groundbreaking, effectively serve the story, adding to the film's charm rather than distracting from it."Galaxy Quest" also explores themes of identity, redemption, and the power of belief. Each character undergoes a personal journey, discovering their strength and value beyond their typecast roles. The film's climax, involving a "Galaxy Quest" convention, underscores the idea that belief in oneself and in others can lead to real-world heroism, a message that resonates well beyond the confines of the story. In retrospect, "Galaxy Quest" has grown from a cult classic into a beloved gem, appreciated for its witty satire, emotional depth, and loving tribute to the sci-fi genre and its fans. The film's enduring popularity is a testament to its quality, humor, and the universal appeal of its underlying themes. It serves as a reminder that, sometimes, to find our true selves, we need to embrace the roles we've been given, no matter how alien they may seem.In conclusion, "Galaxy Quest" stands as a pinnacle of sci-fi comedy, expertly blending satire, heart, and adventure. Its clever script, combined with strong performances from the cast, makes it a standout film that continues to entertain and inspire. Whether you're a die-hard sci-fi aficionado or simply in search of a film that offers laughs and a warm heart, "Galaxy Quest" is a journey worth taking. Its message of unity, understanding, and the transformative power of believing in one's self and others is as relevant today as it was at the time of its release. Joining Alexa this week to discuss all things vibrato is Professor of Voice and Voice Pedagogy and Chair of Voice at the University of Texas at San Antonio, John Nix. John is a voice researcher himself, and his mentors include Barbara Doscher and Ingo Titze. John has produced 50 published articles and eight book chapters, co-chairs the Voice Science Advisory Committee, and serves on both the Journal of Singing and the Rowman and Littlefield/NATS book editorial boards. KEY TAKEAWAYS Vibrato encompasses several components. Firstly, it involves the rhythmic modulation of the fundamental frequency, which translates into changes in perceived pitch. Secondly, it includes fluctuations in amplitude, affecting the perceived loudness or intensity. Lastly, vibrato introduces variations in timbre as harmonics traverse the resonant frequencies associated with vowel sounds, resulting in shifts in tonal quality. The rate of vibrato refers to how frequently the frequency oscillates, essentially measuring the speed of those pitch variations. Extent quantifies the range by which the pitch rises and falls, indicating the breadth of the oscillation. Vibrato jitter assesses the regularity of these cycles, gauging the consistency in the rate of vibrato. A regular, stable vibrato with moderate extent and rate indicates a singer's improved balance and control, reflecting refined vocal technique and skill. Respiratory Vibrato originates from variations in the breath pressure from the lungs controlled by singers managing their diaphragm to create fluctuations in airflow. Abdominal Vibrato is produced by controlled abdominal muscle contractions. Laryngeal Vibrato occurs due to oscillations in the tension of the vocal cords themselves. BEST MOMENTS ‘Vibrato extent is measured in cents not hertz because that confuses it with rate' ‘The vibrato esthetic has become more international than regional over time' ‘Heightened emotion imprints itself upon our voice through the tremulousness' ‘It's easier to target something slower than your natural rate' EPISODE RESOURCES Website: https://www.johnnixvoiceteacher.com/ Contact John Directly! SAFE AND CLEAN DENVER IS JOINING A BIGGER NATIONWIDE MOVEMENT I can't tell you how sad I am that we need this and how happy I am that people are doing it. Safe and Clean Denver is an organization with a very clear mission: clean up the urban camping and prevent the enablement of addiction. You can read their action plan here, and I LOVE IT. I'm talking to David Howard from Safe and Clean Denver about their new partnership with a national organization called North America Recovers, which is a US and Canada Coalition pushing against enablement and perpetuation of addiction and pushing for recovery. If you are tired of Denver turning into an open air drug market and trash pile, please consider joining this movement or at least signing up for the newsletter to stay informed. David joins me at 2.
