This week we #starwarsified Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin the Magic Kingdom. Being a space-themed right, it doesn't take much to turn it into Star Wars, but we came up with 3 great ideas that we hope you'll enjoy! The Beak and Barrel will open later this month and we discussed the pros and cons of having this sort of place in a park that's filled with families and a lot of younger park goers. The menu looks interesting and we give our thoughts on the options. In Star Wars news, Disney and Gina Carouso settled their differences, and who knows, we may see her in the Mandalorian and Grogu movie next year. Thank you for listening. As American-born sisters, neither Kate nor Betsy grew up knowing who Action Man was or what his life entailed. None of that has stopped us from truly appreciating Mini Grey's lovely ode to a kid, his toy, and their various adventures. Did it come out after Toy Story? It did. Was it derivative? It was not (though there are some Buzz Lightyear similarities). British to its core, Mini Grey was in the ZONE when she wrote this one!! We've not done a Mini Grey title since Ginger Bear, so clearly we're due. We also don't want to give too much away but this title entirely charmed Kate, and for good reason. It appeared on Betsy's Top 100 Picture Books polls TWICE. And truly? It's just a fun book for one and all. Remember it all over again. Put on your latex head-cap and grab your Thermian translator — this week, your starfleet of snark is diving headfirst into the unlikely sci-fi cult classic that beamed itself into nerd hearts everywhere. Jordan and Heigl travel back to 1999 to explore how a fake show about fake space heroes somehow made real Trekkies weep with joy — and earned an honorary place alongside the actual Star Trek movies. You'll hear how Leonard Nimoy accidentally inspired the original script, why Kevin Kline (not Buzz Lightyear) was supposed to lead the crew, and how Alan Rickman — literal Shakespearean royalty — somehow found himself next to a farting Tim Allen...and hated every second of it. (So did everyone on the set.) Heigl delves deep into Allen’s pre-fame life as a coke mule with a prison stint under his belt, Jordan talks about psychologic effects of space travel and Orson Welles’ touching friendship with Winston Churchill (for some reason), and they both luxuriate in the decades-long feuds between Star Trek cast members. The pair go on to discuss the worst-dubbed F-bomb in cinematic history, why comedy legend Harold Ramis prematurely departed the project, and all the reasons why the producers were terrified they were going to get sued. You’ll also discover how the film’s parody became prophecy, predicting not just the rise of fandom, but the emotional power of obsessive nerdery years before Comic-Con went corporate. So whether you’re a diehard fan or just here for the fart jokes, this one’s for you. By Grabthar’s Hammer — it’s podcast time! Every story needs some event that kicks off the plot. In Toy Story it's Andy getting a Buzz Lightyear toy for his birthday. In Harry Potter it's an owl showing up at Harry's house to tell him he's invited to Hogwarts. In Acts, it's the Holy Spirit being poured out on Jesus's friends and followers at what we now call Pentecost. In this message, Pastor Joel unpacks why Pentecost matters so much, specifically because of the way it “hyperlinks” to other passages in the Bible that help explain the groundbreaking nature of this crucial moment in the church's history. The biggest hyperlink in today's message is the way God's power breaks down barriers between humans to create a global and diverse church.
In this episode of Challenge Accepted, Thomas and Frank revisit the 1999 sci-fi comedy classic Galaxy Quest. They break down why the movie has earned cult status, analyze how it parodies and celebrates Star Trek and fandom itself, and share insights from the 2019 documentary Never Surrender: A Galaxy Quest Documentary. From Tim Allen's heartfelt arc to Alan Rickman's legendary performance and the layered comedy, the duo unpacks what makes this film timeless. They also debate whether Galaxy Quest belongs in their Top 100 Movies list and tease what's next for the franchise. Timestamps and Topics 00:00:00 Welcome and Galaxy Quest intro 00:00:24 First impressions and what holds up visually 00:01:00 Parody vs. praise of fandom 00:02:17 Star Trek influences on Galaxy Quest 00:02:51 All-star cast and career highlights 00:03:59 How the film won over Star Trek actors and fans 00:05:39 Plot breakdown and key story beats 00:08:08 Deeper Star Trek parallels and franchise impact 00:09:15 Character arcs: Jason Nesmith and Alexander Dane 00:12:19 Alan Rickman's standout arc 00:14:52 Sigourney Weaver's layered performance 00:17:37 Classic sci-fi tropes and commentary 00:19:04 Sam Rockwell's redshirt satire 00:21:02 Brandon's arc and fandom representation 00:25:15 Daryl Mitchell's growth and embracing fandom 00:28:31 Tony Shalhoub's iconic chill energy 00:34:15 Alien planet tropes and subversions 00:36:17 Heartbreak and emotional beats with the aliens 00:38:10 Layers of comedy and visual gags 00:41:01 The climactic battle and villain design 00:44:14 Pacing and storytelling craftsmanship 00:45:25 Fun facts from Never Surrender documentary 00:54:00 Rainn Wilson and Justin Long's early roles 00:55:34 Why a modern series could work 00:58:48 Should Galaxy Quest be in the Top 100? 01:01:08 Tease for next episode: How to Train Your Dragon Key Takeaways Galaxy Quest balances parody and heartfelt celebration of Star Trek and fandom. Every main character undergoes a clear arc, moving from cynicism to heroism. Alan Rickman's subtle performance stands out even in a broad comedy. The film smartly deconstructs sci-fi tropes while respecting their place in the genre. Galaxy Quest was ahead of its time in showing the value and meaning of geek culture. The 2019 documentary Never Surrender deepens appreciation for the film's legacy. The upcoming Galaxy Quest series has potential if it honors the original's spirit. Memorable Quotes "You deserve that. And for me, at my best, I need to feel this in my soul to give that to you." (Frank on Alan Rickman's final catchphrase scene) "If the cast of the show was bigger fans of their own show, they would have survived better." (Thomas on how fandom knowledge matters in Galaxy Quest's story) "Tim Allen went from Home Improvement uncertainty to being Buzz Lightyear. This movie came right at that transition." (Frank on Tim Allen's career at the time of Galaxy Quest) "Every conversation moves the story forward. This movie is so well-paced and tight." (Thomas on the film's editing and structure) Call to Action If you enjoyed this episode, please subscribe to Challenge Accepted, leave us a review, and share the podcast with a fellow movie lover. Finnish actor Santeri Karl-Henrik Kinnunen, the son of 2 actor-parents, found early immersion spending time on a farm as a Helsinki city child. There he became utterly fascinated by horses, learning to ride & go somewhere else with his thoughts & dreams, immersed in the countryside. Kinnunen is a veteran of the Helsinki City Theatre & has acted in the KOM Theater as well as the Finnish National Theatre. He is also a veteran of many Finnish film & television productions. His second immersion was losing himself to rediscover himself in his acting roles in stage productions such as MacBeth & in films such as A Charming Mass Suicide, Matti: Hell Is for Heroes, & Hellsinki. But his strangest pleasure as a professional actor is as a voice actor for which he supplies the Finnish voice of Buzz Lightyear in the Toy Story series & Captain John Smith in Pocahontas. He finds it fascinating that he can find immersion using his voice even if they're only the disembodied voices of animated 2-dimensional characters…

In the animated movie Toy Story, a child’s toys come to life whenever he leaves the room or falls asleep. One character, a space ranger named Buzz Lightyear, shouts his signature catchphrase while demonstrating his ability to fly about the bedroom. “To infinity and beyond!” It’s a phrase that has confused many. Isn’t infinity as far as you can go? How can there be anything “beyond” infinity? Drawing on wisdom from ancient Greek philosophers, mathematician Ian Stewart suggests that what is beyond infinity are yet bigger infinities. On and on and on. Jesus seems to employ such exponential effort in the realm of forgiveness. When Peter asked Jesus, “How many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?” Jesus answered, “I tell you, you must forgive him more than seven times. You must forgive him even if he wrongs you seventy times seven” (Matthew 18:22). Jesus goes on to tell a parable comparing a merciful and unmerciful servant, making the point that when someone truly regrets their error, there is no limit to the number of times we are to forgive. We are to forgive others the way God forgives us (v. 33). Over and over, on and on. That may seem impossible to us. That’s why we constantly need to ask God for His help. Only in His strength can we do this. Forgiven people forgive people. To infinity and beyond!

Pixar's 30th Anniversary in the Parks – New shows, character appearances (hello, Rex!), and nostalgic celebrations at Disneyland Resort. Visual Storytelling 101 – Jim and Ruben connect the dots between comics and Imagineering, from panel layouts to queue design.
