Today, Hunter spoke with Professor Daniel Loehr to discuss his research on the Eugenics Origin of Habitual Offender Laws. While many people hear habitual offender laws and think of the three strikes laws from the tough on crime era of the 1990's, Daniel reveals that the history of these laws traces back to a much earlier and darker time in our nation's history. Daniel lays out how America's Eugenics movement wanted habitual offender laws to act as a way to stop certain populations from procreating, and what we as a society should do with these laws given their history. Humanity has a dangerous flaw. Despite the amazing progress we've made eradicating diseases, extending life, creating safe and often fulfilling workplaces, and developing a wide variety of magical machines, humans still fight wars, hate irrationally, and create groups of others who are intentionally marginalized. Our big brains have helped us create incredible tools and marvelous works of art. Still, they have a seemingly ingrained tendency toward violence and the marginalization of outside groups. As humans continue to create more devastating weaponry, performance psychologist Jim Loehr believes empathy and compassion are what can save us from us. In this interview, Dr. Loehr discusses “our species' penchant for aggression and violence.” To overcome our natural biological scarcity mindset, Dr. Loehr goes on to talk about a 20-week program he has developed for parents, teachers, and coaches that aims to create shared learning environments where people can strengthen their compassion and empathy muscles, practice acts of collaboration, and train themselves to manage their emotions to avoid aggressive overreactions.Dr. Jim Loehr is a world-renowned performance psychologist, whose ground-breaking, science-based energy management training system has achieved global recognition. From his more than 30 years of experience and applied research, Dr. Loehr believes the single most important factor in successful achievement, personal fulfillment, and life satisfaction is the strength of one's character. He strongly contends that character strength can be built in the same way that muscle strength is built through energy investment, and has brought this topic to life in his book, Leading with Character: 10 Minutes a Day to a Brilliant Legacy. His latest book is Sapiens Reinvented.

Buy our new book, The Score That Matters https://amzn.to/44kKLHK Full show notes at www.LearningLeader.com Never Miss a Day – In the summer, going into Paul's freshman year of high school, he was at a lacrosse camp at Loyola University… At the end of the morning session, an all-time coaching legend, Tony Seaman spoke to the group. He told them he could guarantee that they could earn a college scholarship. All they had to do? "Take 100 shots per day. Here's the catch. You can never miss a day. No excuses." What are your 100 shots a day? Goal Setting – Most people don't set goals because the act alone is both a major and personal step in the direction of commitment, and it invites hope, fear, and the possibility of regret. Focus on what you can control – John Wooden was 5'10. Below average for a basketball player. He was really good at “understanding the things at which he had no control and things over which I had some control.” Let Go of Outcomes – Archery master Awa Kenzo told his students to pay no attention to the target. Success and failure come from the same place, so that's where the archer should point all of their attention: not on the outcome, but the effort. Therapy– Dr. Lindsey Hoskins once said that when we hurt someone we love, it's because we fear disconnection from that someone. We hope that by lashing out, they'll show us love, and as a result, we'll feel safer in the relationship.” The Difference Between Self-Promotion and Passion - "I'm not going to convince you to like what I do. I'm going to show you how much I love what I do.” You won't achieve ambitious goals if you don't set ambitious goals. The legendary Michael Ovitz shotgun pitch to Coca-Cola. He and his team outworked the competition, flew in a day early, practiced in the actual room the pitch would take place, bought new suits, and over-delivered during the pitch meeting. Their competitors took the meeting for granted, flew in the morning of, and didn't perform. Michael and his team won the $300m contract and earned the business for years to come. A true champion is intensely focused on the things they can control. Being coachable is rare—it's being curious, eager, self-aware, and ambitious. Discover and harness your unique learning style. What might appear as an inability or perceived disadvantage could be your greatest asset in mastering your chosen field. For example, Paul grew up with a learning difference called Auditory Processing Disorder. The only way to learn from failures is to feel it, study them, make adjustments, a new commitment, and put it behind you. The Voice No One Else Hears – Performance psychologist Jim Loehr has worked with some of the top athletes in the world. He has them wear a microphone during a competition, and he asks them to honestly articulate what the voice in their head says and thinks. Whatever the circumstances, Loehr said he asks, “Is this how I would speak to someone I deeply care about? Or, if I were speaking to someone I deeply cared about, what would I say?” "I've been here before." "I've taken 35,000 shots." Rebound... Bounce back. Paul loves the "up and down" statistic in golf. It refers to a golfer recovering from a bad shot and still making a par on the hole. In life, it's all about how you choose to respond. Paul's Brother, Mike - “One of my favorite chapters in this book is about planting “little acorns.” (p.174) Had it not been for the biggest acorn in the family, who left his job to build the PLL with me... well, I'd just be a retired athlete, continuing the pursuit of my next professional life. Thank you for everything, Mike.”

Temple keepers, celery eaters, pubic hair hoarders: lesbians can really do it all. If you want to find out what else they can do, make sure to listen to today's episode, as Lea and Casey interview author Kirsty Loehr, and ask her more about the fabulous figures featured in her book A Short History of Queer Women. After stressing the importance of preserving and talking about queer history, Kirsty shares more (spicy) details about questionable boob lovers like Marie-Antoinette, and bona fide lesbians like Anne Lister, Emily Brontë, and many more. How much would you pay to spend almost 90 minutes with a world-renowned performance psychologist (a pioneer in the field), researcher, New York Times best-selling author, C-suite coach, co-founder of the Human Performance Institute (HPI), co-founder of APeak Tennis, advisor and coach of Evolve Leadership? In this podcast episode, I had the privilege of talking with Dr. Jim Loehr as he reflected on his more than 30 years of vast experience and applied research designed to successfully leverage the science of energy management to improve the productivity and engagement of world-class performers in the areas of sport, business, medicine, and law enforcement. He shares what he believes is the most important factor in success, personal fulfillment, and life satisfaction. Dr. Loehr also discusses his recently co-authored book that he believes is “the most important book [he has] ever written” called Wise Decisions: A Science-Based Approach to Making Better Choices. Dr. Jim Loehr's parents were deeply religious, devout Catholics so his whole life was centered around religious teachings and beliefs. His sister became a nun, and his brother became a Jesuit priest out of high school and was in the Jesuits for seven years. Dr. Loehr explained that “there was no choice as to where I was going to go to school…I had to go to a school that [my parents] approved.” So, he attended Regis High School then Regis University. The only graduate school his parents would accept, while staying reasonably close to home, was the University of Northern Colorado. Therefore, Dr. Loehr received his BA in Psychology from Regis University, and an MA and EdD in Psychology from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, CO. During our discussion, Dr. Loehr reflects on his academic and professional journey highlighting the experiences and people that impacted him and explains the events that led him to become a pioneer in the sport and performance psychology field. Throughout our discussion, he offers thoughtful and practical advice to those interested in the field. He shares a story in which he wrote a book called Mental Toughness Training for Sports and sent it to 19 major league publishers and got 19 rejections where they all said, “what the heck is mental toughness?” Dr. Loehr's father played professional baseball and read the book and said, “this makes sense…I'm going to go ahead and take a risk here” and he paid someone to produce the book and they sent it around to see what people thought of the book. The book became an underground bestseller and, all of a sudden, it was picked up by a major publisher and sold millions of copies all over the world. Dr. Loehr realized that the concept of mental toughness was so new and “because it was before its time, they thought it was absolute nonsense.” Resilience and toughness are needed when you are a pioneer and you are doing something different. Dr. Loehr shares some of the most significant experiences of his career, the ones that impacted him and his journey the most, including his experience as Chief Psychologist and Executive Director of the San Luis Valley Mental Health Corporation. We discuss how he founded The Center for Athletic Excellence in Denver, CO and his involvement as the Executive Director and Sport Psychologist at the Jimmy Connors United States Tennis Center. Dr. Loehr shares the story leading up to getting that position. Essentially, there was an ad for someone to run the Jimmy Connors United States Tennis Center in Sanibel Harbor, so he called Bob Davis and said, “I'll run all the facility for you, but I want to have access to Jimmy's brain. I want to be able to do videos and everything else. I want to see what makes that competitive brain work. I need to learn. So, he didn't check with Jimmy. He just said, ‘no, it's done. We'd love to have somebody with a Doctor of Psychology down here.'” He had such a reputation and following that many of the players at the Nick Bollettieri ...

Sarah speaks with Kirsty Loehr about her book A Short History of Queer Women: "No, they weren't ‘just friends'! Queer women have been written out of history since, well, forever. ‘But historians famously care about women!', said no one. From Anne Bonny and Mary Read who sailed the seas together disguised as pirates, to US football captain Megan Rapinoe declaring ‘You can't win a championship without gays on your team', via countless literary salons and tuxedos, A Short History of Queer Women sets the record straight on women who have loved other women through the ages. In this episode, Drs. Jim Loehr and Sheila Ohlsson Walker join Bradley to talk about the concepts in their new book, "Wise Decisions." In WISE DECISIONS, the authors introduce the concept of Your Own Decision Advisor or Y.O.D.A. – the inner voice that guides people's choices. “When the stories crafted by your inner voice are faulty or ill-conceived, the advice or decisions that emanate from those faulty interpretations will likely be flawed as well,” say Loehr and Walker. Anxiety, depression, loneliness, hopelessness, and fatigue are all capable of sabotaging a person's Y.O.D.A. Are you a card carrying Daughter of Bilitis? This week Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with writer and English teacher Kirsty Loehr (@KirstyLoehr) to talk about her book, A Short History of Queer Women, which teaches readers about the women throughout history that were very much not “just friends” in a way that is both informative and incredibly funny. Although the historical stories of queer women tend to be depressing, Kirsty imbues her work with humor that really helps to showcase who these women were rather than focusing on the tragedy of their circumstances. If you've ever wondered where some of the lesbian stereotypes and jokes we use today originated from, this book is one you need to pick up. Queer women have been around forever. We didn't just disappear after Sappho and reappear with Ellen, and yet much of our history is ignored or purposefully re-written to be less queer than it was. For example, the Daughters of Bilitis invented the idea of the card-carrying lesbian. Not only did they invent the very first lesbian magazine, but they also had membership cards and a manifesto and everything! They were very dedicated to the cause. Queer people have always been incredibly inventive and creative. Going back all the way to Sappho, she literally invented the guitar pick so that she could cut her nails to pleasure women while maintaining her ability to play the guitar. Ingenious! On behalf of musical queers everywhere, thank you Sappho. If you enjoyed Gentleman Jack, you won't want to miss us talking to Kirsty about Anne Lister and the way the show captured the experience of being a lesbian in that time period where most people could not even conceive of the idea of two women being anything but friends. We also talk about former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and the incredibly romantic letters she used to exchange with her “friend” Lorena Hickok (whom she nicknamed Hick). They were clearly having a love affair and yet people still deny it to this day. We mourn for the more explicit letters that Hick actually burned rather than choosing to expose Eleanor. Surely if those letters had not been burned, there would be less of a debate around whether they were actually a couple. It is important to look back on the history of queer women and to learn about the sapphics who helped us get to where we are today. They could never have even imagined a world where they could marry and have a family with another woman and to forget their contributions would be a disservice to queer women everywhere.
