The annual White House Correspondents' Association Dinner returns this Saturday for a night of comedy ‘roasting' – where the great and the good are ruthlessly mocked in celebration of the freedom of the press. In recent years, however, the night has taken on a different tone, with the atmosphere of warm self-deprecation and bipartisan bonhomie replaced by something more scathing and serious. This week Jonathan Freedland is joined by Jeff Nussbaum, a former senior speech writer to Joe Biden, to discuss the art of writing gags for presidents and whether there is still space for humour in US politics.

August 8, 1974. President Richard Nixon sits in the Oval Office, addressing the American people. He tells them: I'm going to resign. The news is shocking, but not unexpected. Today, it might even seem inevitable. But in the days leading up to the big decision, Nixon himself didn't know what he would do. At night he roamed the halls of the White House, torturously weighing his options. He even ordered a speechwriter to draft a statement announcing his refusal to resign. Sally Helm sits down with political speechwriter Jeff Nussbaum to talk about this curious kind of a document: a speech that could've changed history if only it had been given. They discuss what Nixon, and two other speech givers, would have felt preparing multiple drafts, as they faced an uncertain future, and how the world would be different had these speeches been given.Special thanks to our guest: Jeff Nussbaum, author of Undelivered: The Never-Heard Speeches That Would Have Rewritten History. Great speeches can change the course of history. Not every speech, however, ends up getting delivered. Many, by twist of fate or some last-minute decision, end up being lost to history, such as Hillary Clinton's 2016 Election acceptance speech or Emperor Hirohito's speech of remorse following WWII. Thankfully, prominent speechwriter Jeff Nussbaum has published a book to recover these lost documents, titled Undelivered: The Never-Heard Speeches That Would Have Re-Written History. Many people think of history as inevitable. Events lead to outcomes that tumble towards a foregone conclusion. In reality, many monumental moments could have gone down very differently if certain events had or had not occurred.Former presidential speechwriter Jeff Nussbaum became obsessed with undelivered speeches after working on the Al Gore campaign. His new book, "Undelivered: The Never-Heard Speeches That Would Have Rewritten History", explores speeches that were prepared for outcomes that never were. Those primary sources reveal how easily history could have taken a different path. They also offer insight into those moments themselves, including the motivations and feelings of the speech-givers and the people around them.We ask him about history, these speeches, and what they tell us about these moments in time.Want to support 1A?
