On tonight's program: After the devastation wrought by Hurricane Helene, President Biden paid a supportive visit to storm-tossed Taylor County; We speak with some recognized experts when it comes to such things as climate change. And we'll celebrate the golden victory of a young Florida athlete; A Florida climate expert explains why hurricanes are getting stronger; Florida says goodbye to a former governor and U.S. Senator. Famed political analyst Susan McManus remembers Bob Graham; And a Florida State University swimmer finally got to represent Team U.S.A this year at the Paralympics and found a chance to use her voice.
It fits in our Governor's series coincidently right during our holiday break, so here is an encore presentation of our Bob Graham tribute podcast from when he passed away earlier this year.
...in which we take an autumnual stroll around Grasmere to explore the history of fell-running with runner, archivist and west coast lad Peter Todhunter. Setting out from the village green – one-time site of Westmorland wrestling matches – we visit the field below Allan Bank, where the first known Guides Race took place in 1868. As a traditional Cumbrian 'sports day' grew to encompass hound trailing, boating, 'high leaping' and horse-racing – alongside the emerging discipline of fell-running – we consider the locational moves necessitated by an ever-growing number of competitors (often farm workers, gamekeepers and miners) and visitors. Moving into the modern era, we profile the first fell-running superstars, including Ernest Dalziel – the legend of Burnsall – and Keswick's own Bob Graham, who completed his iconic 42-peak Round in tennis shoes. We consider the growing list of endurance events that developed on the fells, from the 24-hour Challenge to the Mountain Trial, and the emergence of the amateur fell-running scene that dominates the sport today. Arriving at the Showfield – site of Grasmere Sports – Peter reflects on the achievements and legacy of his much-missed friend, Joss Naylor; tells us why Robinson is the greatest fell of all; reveals why a set of the Wainwright Guides are his desert island reads; and answers the perennial Bob conundrum... why Great Calva?. 'Running Int' Fells' is an exhibition that shares the history, spirit and enjoyment of running on the fells, from the beginnings at Grasmere Sports to ultra and trail running events today. The exhibition is on at The Armitt until 21 December, 2024.

Hurricane Helene sideswiped us at a good distance in the Gulf. But that's little consolation to thousands of barrier island residents here who suffered flooding from a historic storm surge. We have a first damage assessment. Next: WSLR News reporter Florence Fahringer puts the focus on the storm surge, talking to victims and experts. Then: An environmental group lauds the achievements of former Governor Bob Graham for planning in Florida. That nostalgic view of past achievements contrasts with recent and current trends in planning in the state, as WSLR reporter Noah Vinsky found. Finally: In what could change the neighborhood-vs-developer balance of the City of Sarasota commission, Mayor Liz Alpert is facing challenger Ron Kashden in the upcoming elections. Ramon Lopez has a close look at both candidates.
In this episode I read my article 'Competition as Catalyst: Beyond Racing on Tranter's Round' which was recently published in Like The Wind magazine #42. Tranter's round is a 60km round in the Lochaber hills, and my favourite round. I held the record for several years until Jack Kuenzle arrived from the USA and shaved around 15 minutes off in summer 2022. It may come as no surprise that I was keen to try and get the record back, which I did on 1st June this year.Myself and Jack have had an interesting friendship-rivalry since meeting in 2022, with him going on to gain the Bob Graham round record, and us meeting and skiing together in winter 2024. We also raced at Trofeo Kima in August, but that's for another discussion - next episode! For a detailed discussion about Jack's Tranter's record in 2022, listen to episode 21.My Tranter's run was one of my all time best days out, particularly in the latter stages, where I experienced a rare and near euphoric mind state. I highly value the way that running hard in the mountains can at times produce these special experiences.

Kia ora e te whānau! This week we're joined by DCR favourite guest Gareth Morris as he recounts to us how he knocked off a run he first dreamed of more than a decade ago when he read the DCR favourite book, Feet in the Clouds, by Richard Askwith. The famous Bob Graham Round, a fell running loop in the English Lake District, challenges runners to tackle 42 peaks over a 66 mile course in less than 24 hours. (Bob Graham was the first person to go under that mark, in 1932). Gareth talks all about the history of this famous route, the camaraderie and sacrifice of those who helped him, and how he used the powerful words of legendary runner Nicky Spinks to get him to the end. Even if you've never heard of the BGR, or have any intention of running it, you'll come away from this episode inspired (and with new knowledge about unique English cuisine …) Best enjoyed running!Sign up to the DCR AidStation Episode links:Westie Runner on YouTubeSQUADRUNDirt Church Merch!Maree Leith Pledge Me for Finding Her Stride NickrunsAustralia.org.nz Inia Raumati Kia Mau Kia Ora CurranzJulbo Eyewear UltrAspireDirt Church Radio on InstagramDirt Church Radio on Twitter Dirt Church Radio on Facebook CieleFurther Faster New ZealandEnjoy!Music by Andrew McDowall, Digicake

Leadville: The 100 Mile Mountain Bike Race Podcast, p/b Floyd's of Leadville
The people who say "age is just a number" are either very young or are not paying attention. Age matters, but so does experience, attitude, motivation, and training — and our guest Bob Graham is bringing all of those to the starting line this year. This is a great conversation with a great athlete, no matter what age you are (but especially for those of us who know that age is one of the factors to consider in the Leadville 100). Also, be sure to catch Fatty's Finishing Tip this episode; he's got some wisdom to share that he learned the hard way...and to take advantage, you need to heed it ASAP.
I had the great pleasure of interviewing Jenny Bushell after the completion of her Bob Graham round. This is a 66 mile route in the Lake District encompassing 42 peaks and 27000 ft (8200m) of elevation. Jenny's story is an amazing one having only started running through C25k in 2013. She progressed on to running a London marathon championship time of 3:14 before moving to the trails and mountains. This episode is perfect for getting masses of preparation and mindset tips as well as touching on training and nutrition but primarily getting the sense of what it's like to set a huge goal and accomplishing it. Great to catch up with northern NSW riding legend Peter Graham who's still going strong at 55 years of age and closing in on 2500 career wins. Peter was born and reared at Wauchope and virtually taught himself to ride at the local racecourse. When it was time to launch his professional riding career he chose Port Macquarie as his home base and he's still there today. Peter begins by talking about younger daughter Rori who's getting over a nasty trackwork injury. He pays tribute to daughter Cejay, currently one of Brisbane's in form jockeys. Peter talks of son Jesse who rode a few winners before opting for a change of career direction. He acknowledges the help given by wife Karen at his Port Macquarie training property. He talks of his role as the holder of a dual training and riding licence. Peter looks back on the Wauchope trackwork accident that left him with a condition known as “frozen shoulder”. The veteran says he thought about retirement but decided on a return to race riding when his shoulder injury improved. Peter looks back on early days at Wauchope and his initial apprenticeship to Bob Graham. He says he had no real tutelage in those early days. Eventually he moved to Muswellbrook. The respected horseman reflects on his first win as a 36kg apprentice. He talks of an affinity with the Kempsey track where he's won 6 local Cups. Peter looks back on an imposing list of feature wins on northern tracks with special mention of his Grafton Cup win on Rednav as recently as 2016. He pays tribute to Rednav's trainer Sally Taylor. He looks back on several rewarding seasons on NSW tracks. Peter says country commitments have kept him away from city tracks, but recalls one day at Randwick that turned out to be an unpleasant experience. He talks of the ten acre farm at Port Macquarie from which he prepares his small string of horses. The versatile horseman talks about recent track improvements at Port Macquarie racecourse. Peter talks of the immense thrill he received when daughter Cejay rode her first winner for the stable. He discusses the prospects of members of his small team going forward. Peter pays tribute to some of the talented country jockeys with whom he's ridden over the years. It's a long overdue tribute to one of the kings of northern NSW racing.
At 10AM CBS resumed programming with their mid-morning soap operas. First up was Valiant Lady, starring Joan Blaine. Joan was a valiant lady because she sacrificed a promising Broadway career for her father's sake, then married a “brilliant but unstable" surgeon. People like the just-heard Mandel Kramer loved working on soap operas from New York. At 10:15AM Light of the World signed on starring Bret Morrison as “the Speaker.” The show was a soap opera version of the stories of the bible and featured some of New York's best talent like Mandel Kramer, Louise Fitch, and Alexander Scourby. This D-Day broadcast was the very first episode of Light of the World on CBS. It had been running on NBC since March of 1940. It would run on CBS until August of 1946 before once again being picked up by NBC until June 2nd, 1950. When Light of the World signed off, The Open Door signed on at 10:30. Created by Sandra Michael, The Open Door was a purposely slow-moving, character building show built around Dean Eric Hansen of the fictional Vernon University. The stories involved people in his life: their problems, lives, and loves. The star, Dr. Alfred Dorf had known Sandra Michael since her childhood in Denmark. He'd come to America to establish a church in Brooklyn and was the true inspiration behind the character. Unfortunately, the agency handling the sponsor's account didn't like the direction of the series. They pressured Sandra Michael into changing the show, but she resisted and the show was canceled after June 30th, 1944. Once The Open Door signed off, Bachelor's Children signed on at 10:45. It featured Hugh Studebaker as Dr. Bob Graham, a bachelor who took in his dying friend's 18-year-old twin daughters. Marjorie Hannan played Ruth Ann, the kind, thoughtful twin, and Patricia Dunlap played Janet, the fiery and impulsive twin. Olan Soule played Sam Ryder. He was, perhaps, best known for co-starring with Barbara Luddy on The First Nighter.

Governor Graham had just published a book titled “Intelligence Matters: The CIA, the FBI, Saudi Arabia, and the Failure of America's War on Terror.” This show launched in the Spring of 2004 as a live, hour long call-in show. Our founding host was Ryan Warner. Today we listen back to excerpts from that show with Ryan behind the mic.

Graham is recognized for his critical role as chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee post-9/11 and as a staunch critic of the Iraq War. The family confirmed his death in a statement highlighting his impactful roles as a devout family man and a visionary public servant. President Joe Biden, reflecting on Graham's nearly 50 years of public service, praised his contributions to national security, environmental protection, and public education. Biden also noted Graham's instrumental role in co-sponsoring the Violence Against Women Act and his ongoing commitment to Everglades conservation. Graham's political journey began in the Florida House of Representatives in 1966, taking him to the governorship, and three terms in the U.S. Senate. Rob Greenwood, UKC Guru (probably not his actual job title!), interviews Finlay Wild about his recent “Dark Bob” - a Bob Graham Round run between sunset and sunrise, solo and unsupported in Jan 2024. Rob is no stranger to long rounds, having racked up an impressive CV including the UK “Big Three”, Rigby Round and Spine Challenger. Developing the idea of midwinter rounds, Finlay maximised the darkness and committed to attempting whatever the weather on the longest night (Winter Solstice 21-22nd December). This first attempt was aborted at Scafell Pike in very poor conditions - strong winds, heavy rain and visibility reduced to 5m on the higher peaks. Trying again on 6th January, Finlay had a narrower sunset-sunrise window (16h30 rather than 16h45 at the Solstice) but took advantage of better weather to try again. Setting out once more from Moot Hall at official sunset, this time 4.03pm, he had a very different experience and managed to get ahead of Kim Collison's overall Winter BGR record of 15h47, taking 12minutes off this to give a new winter record of 15h35m47s. Conditions were good: -2'c on the high tops, clear skies and light wind. Parts of the ground were frozen and there was icy hoar frost around the high peaks, but not much snow or neve build up. We discuss differing winter conditions, especially with the effects of climate change, and the idea that maximising the darkness - and using map and compass navigation - made for its own unique adventures. We mention different definitions of Winter - Astronomical Winter is the name for the period between Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox. Bandar Bush Plus 911 UpdatesThe Ochelli Effect 8-16-2023 Jon GoldNotes Fron JonA good friend of the Bush family helped to finance 9/11, and was in contact with "Omar al Bayoumi, a Saudi agent who assisted two of the hijackers upon their arrival in the U.S." Omar reported "directly to Saudi Ambassador Prince Bandar in Washington leading up to the attacks."That good friend, and Prince Bandar are one and the same. From Jacobinhttps://jacobin.com/2022/03/911-revelations-saudi-arabia-al-bayoumi-bandar-bush/"Despite all this, and even though FBI agents had reason to believe he was a Saudi spy — something only revealed in 2016 upon declassification of twenty-eight pages of the 9/11 Commission Report that former president George W. Bush had ordered be kept secret — US authorities exonerated him. The report ultimately concluded there was “no credible evidence” that al-Bayoumi “knowingly aided extremist groups,” while the bureau decided in 2004 that he had no “advance knowledge of the terrorist attack” nor that the two hijackers-to-be were members of al-Qaeda.This latest release makes those claims a lot less tenable. According to an FBI communiqué dated to June 2017, from the late 1990s to September 11, 2001, al-Bayoumi “was paid a monthly stipend as a cooptee of the Saudi General Intelligence Presidency (GIP),” the country's principal spy agency. The document notes that while his involvement with Saudi intelligence wasn't confirmed at the time of the 9/11 Commission Report, the bureau has now confirmed it. In a separate 2017 document, bureau officials judge that “there is a 50/50 chance [al-Bayoumi] had advanced knowledge the 9/11 attacks were to occur.”[...]"More than that, the report directly implicates a member of the Saudi royal family and government. Al-Bayoumi's monthly stipend was paid “via then ambassador [to the United States] Prince Bandar bin Sultan Alsaud,” it states, and any information al-Bayoumi collected on “persons of interest in the Saudi community in Los Angeles and San Diego and other issues, which met certain GIP intelligence requirements, would be forwarded to Bandar,” who would “then inform the GIP of items of interest to the GIP for further investigation/vetting or follow up.”'https://wewereliedtoabout911.substack.com/p/a-damned-good-question-tribute-to?fbclid=IwAR0VJzo2CMTrz5bO1mUviC78jT5mfqLkrH9yEreDo8SWfUJLqq_YO2rbTBQ"I was listening to my interview with Paul Thompson (which by the way is priceless), and we talked about the "flip theory" concerning the two alleged hijackers in San Diego put forward by Richard Clarke. The idea was so they would have operatives inside of "Al-Qaeda." I don't agree with it. What I know is that the CIA was protecting two of the alleged hijackers, and that's reason enough for people to be held accountable, and for truths to be told."[...]So I was thinking, if Prince Bandar helps to finance "Al-Qaeda" and 9/11, then that technically makes him a member of "Al-Qaeda." I can't think of a better plant to get inside of "Al-Qaeda." He was good friends with George Tenet, then the Director of the CIA. George used to go to his house, swim in his pool, and go on drunken tirades. I'm sure they spoke about A LOT of things. Prince Bandar was GOOD FRIENDS with the Bush Family. So close, he was referred to as "Bandar Bush."On March 15th 2001, George Bush was meeting with Prince Bandar, one of the financiers of "Al-Qaeda" and 9/11, and talked about Iraq. He said "if there is any military action, then it has to be decisive. That can finalize the issue," and that "the Iraqi opposition is useless and not effective." Months before the pretext (9/11) that enabled the Bush Administration to go into Iraq. One day Dick Cheney invites Prince Bandar to his West Wing Office. Donald Rumsfeld, and General Myers are present. Myers brought "a top-secret map of the war plan. And it says, 'Top secret. No foreign.' No foreign means no foreigners are supposed to see this." "They describe in detail the war plan for Bandar. And so Bandar, who's skeptical because he knows in the first Gulf War we didn't get Saddam out, so he says to Cheney and Rumsfeld, 'So Saddam this time is gonna be out, period?' And Cheney - who has said nothing - says the following: 'Prince Bandar, once we start, Saddam is toast.'"Because of the fact that the President of the United States was talking about the need for "decisive" military action in Iraq with one of the financiers of "Al-Qaeda" and 9/11, because Prince Bandar also wanted war with Iraq, and because 9/11 was the pretext that enabled the Bush Administration to go into Iraq, that brings up the question of whether or not there was a collaboration between the Bush Administration and Prince Bandar to bring about the 9/11 attacks. It's not a "theory." It's a DAMNED GOOD QUESTION.After all, 10 days after his inauguration at his very first principals meeting, Bush asked his subordinates to "go find me a way" to get into Iraq. One of the FIRST things the Bush Administration did was tell the different alphabet agencies to "BACK OFF" the Saudis and the Bin Ladens, an action that Senator Bob Graham said if true, would be a "very serious charge." It sure seems to be because the famous John O'Neill complained about it. Not to mention the "Visa Express Program" that was implemented before 9/11 which ONLYapplied to Saudi Arabia, and which some of the alleged hijackers took advantage of. Also, according to Richard Clarke, in the months before 9/11, members of the Bush Administration discussed creating a "cassus belli" for war with Iraq. When I asked Richard Clarke on Facebook his opinion on whether or not people in the Bush Administration were capable of such a thing, he said "some of them were." When 9/11 Commissioner John Lehman asked George Bush about Bandar and 9/11, he "dodged the questions," and then went outside and told the world that he "answered every question" they asked. When the 9/11 Commission questioned Bandar, they didn't even bother to ask him about his connections, financial or otherwise, to 9/11.Jacobin recently came out with this article that talks about even more incriminating information concerning Prince Bandar. In it, they cite Thomas Kean. I am FURIOUS that Kean has the gall to feign anger. As if he didn't know about the 9/11 Commission not asking Prince Bandar the tough questions or Bush dodging questions about Bandar.Anyway, I don't believe in the "flip theory." On top of that, I've shown that we had access to one of the most important insiders of "Al-Qaeda" so why the need to "flip" those two hijackers at all (I'm saying that with a sly, angry smile across my face)?Prince Bandar even admitted that Saudi intelligence was "actively following most of the terrorists with precision."He says that "U.S. Security Authorities" never "engaged their Saudi Counterparts in a serious and credible manner" and that's why 9/11 happened, but I wonder if he "engaged" members of the Bush Administration. After all, if you wanted a terrorist attack to take place, Prince Bandar WOULD be the guy to go to. Remember he threatened London with terrorist attacks "unless corruption investigations into their arms deals were halted." Former FBI Director Louis Freeh was his lawyer at the time. He also sent in terrorists into Syria to try and take out Assad. Because this is the anniversary of the invasion of Iraq, I posted that "they're (those responsible) being invited on "Ellen" to promote their book, they're getting apologies from Keith Olbermann. Their history is being rewritten so as to put them on a pedestal instead of the Hague where they belong."Hell yes they do.By the way, isn't it a disgrace that Prince Bandar's daughter is now the Saudi Ambassador to the United States? Also, FOR SOME REASON, Bandar refuses to testify in the lawsuit brought on by the 9/11 Families against Saudi Arabia. This was recently reported on. I don't have a problem with the idea that the CIA and Saudi Arabia were “secretly working hand in glove.” I have a problem with the idea that it was “to recruit Hazmi and Mihdhar as informants.” As I showed above, the Bush Administration already had the PERFECT INSIDER INTO AL-QAEDA. It doesn't get any better than Bandar. Especially when you consider the recent news that Omar al-Bayoumi, someone who helped the alleged hijackers, “reported directly to the longtime Saudi ambassador to the United States (Prince Bandar), a close and long-standing family friend of the US president“ George W. Bush.Something not being reported on by anyone that I can see, on August 3rd, 2011, George Tenet, Cofer Black, and Richard Blee all released a statement that said “Mr. Clarke went on to speculate--which he admits is based on nothing other than his imagination--that the CIA might have been trying to recruit these two future hijackers as agents. This, like much of what Mr. Clarke said in his interview, is utterly without foundation.“Their statement was the result of work done by Ray Nowosielski and John Duffy. As well as my “Damned Good Question” many other questions need to be answered. The families and the people of the world both deserve and require it.Jon's Websitehttps://wewereliedtoabout911.com/(Note From Chuck) Ochelli Link Treehttps://linktr.ee/chuckochelliAbove is the Ochelli Link Tree.
