It has been said that image is everything.  How an organization manages their image can lead to greater momentum and growth, or it can damage their reputation and increase the risk for great loss.     We are thrilled to have Jennifer McGinley, CEO of JLM Strategic Communications join the program.  JLM Strategic Communications specializes in Media Relations, Community Outreach and Reputation Management.  We ask Jennifer to share her thoughts as to when an organization should engage a Public Relations Firm.  She shares that it is not a matter of "if" a crisis will happen, but rather a matter or "when" a crisis will happen.  Preparation and media training are keys to a successful communications strategy.     Leaders need to be clear, consistent and authentic and remember that this needs to be the commitment for both external and internal communication. PR is an inside out approach, where the overall message is perfected first with your internal team and employees as they are your best advocates.  They support your brand with word of mouth, social media and overall productivity.  Jennifer also touches on how PR is focused on the relationship you have internally and the relationships you have externally with your target audience as well as influencers within the market.  PR supports the overall strengthening of your brand while building credibility.  PR helps with managing and communicating the who, what, when, where, why and how.     We really appreciate her direction for organizations to stay engaged with their audience.  Her mindset is 'don't post and ghost'.  Be consistent with your activity and message. Today we are going to talk about content resonance. This topic is interesting because if you google it, there isn't actually anything there. And that's because this was an idea I stumbled upon when I was talking to Jennifer McGinley about what it takes to make great content. This was a bit before I got firmly entrenched with the idea of radical authenticity. So content resonance was actually a concept that came to me even before radical authenticity. Her Brave Girl story includes work in development and fundraising as well as marketing and communications. She started her own practice when she realized that a 9-5 role wasn’t flexible enough for her while allowing her to continue to use her skills on her own terms. A mom to two teenagers, she believes she is role modeling for her children what’s possible for them. A total extrovert, Jennifer explains how she gains her energy by being around people and believes in respecting everyone, regardless of title or position in the workplace. Heavily influenced by her dad’s philosophy of relationship building and delivering superb customer service, Jennifer brings those skills to her own business today when she is pitching the media for small businesses and not-for-profits. During our conversation, Jennifer shares why she always has to be creating, why self care is so important for her well being and how she works to balance her home and work responsibilities. She also explains why she’s so grateful for her prior work experiences and blessings and how self-reflection informs her decisions today. We talk about the importance of sharpening your listening skills with your children, your friends and your clients and why you need to listen more and talk less. I am sure that you will love Jennifer’s best advice on public relations, entrepreneurship and the importance of relationship building. I’ve gotten to know Jennifer over the past year and I absolutely love her energy, her enthusiasm and her professionalism as a communicator in my community.

Jennifer McGinley had a dream to be an anchor on The Today Show. She got pretty close to where she wanted to be, and even had mentors to help her on her way. But something shifted, as they always do, and she has found her calling in public relations. Jennifer celebrated two years of self-employment with her business, JLM Strategic Communications, in mid-October, and I wanted to hear some of her pivot points in those two years to learn more about her work and her inspiration. She has some great stories about how she got to where she is, and I loved her description of finding her value not in direct PR experience, but in all of her combined experience in a variety of roles that make her truly shine in her work. One thing that stood out during our conversation was talking about people who under-share and over-share in their communications, particularly online. We agree that the most important part of sharing personal stories is knowing the audience you want to connect with, and being intentional about how and what personal stories to share, no matter where you share them. Which brings us to our other agreement: You can no longer separate your personal and professional lives, so it’s best to be intentional about how you want to be perceived - in every situation. Connect with Jennifer on LinkedIn, and be sure to follow her on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram for great PR tips and strategies. If you want to meet her in person, she’ll be hosting a speed session at the upcoming No Longer Virtual event in Chicago on March 21, 22, 2020.
