Amy Douglas is dance music’s bonafide rock chick. Though she has made her reputation in house & disco with her incredible voice & stellar songwriting, Amy is here to ROCK you. After stunning features with everyone from Juan MacLean to Treasure fingers, and repetitive collaborative work with The Crooked Man & Tim Wagner, DFA’s bad girl rose to international prominence when her first solo single “Never Saw It Coming” blazed up the dance charts, and across dancefloors, especially in the UK with support from Bill Brewster, Andrew Weatherall & Sean Johnston. This was followed by her iconic work with Horse Meat Disco & Luke Solomon. Amy wrote “Something More” Roisin Murphy’s smash & also started her own imprint "Ladyballs Records". Upcoming are collaborations Hard Feelings, with Joe Goddard, and #Head, a "tribal transglobal organic hippie dance project", spearheaded by Amy & Jim Stanton of Horse Meat Disco.https://soundcloud.com/amydouglassings
Luke Howard, James Hillard, Severino Panzetta and Jim Stanton are considering the connection between Love and Dancing, the title and twin driving engines behind their first artists’ album. Luke, James, Seve and Jim are the nightlife disciples behind Horse Meat Disco. In the 16 years their little Sunday soirée metamorphosed into a global phenomenon, HMD resuscitated the rich pulse, flavour and heart of dance music’s original bacchanal, handing it back in a frosted cocktail glass to the LGBTQ community disco first embraced. Their names are quite simply synonymous with Good Times. ‘We wanted the record to be about going out and coming home,’ says Luke. ‘From the beginning to the end of the night.’ At HMD, the communion of love and dancing braids seamlessly into one intricate knot. ‘For me, the idea of going out was always connected to the idea that I might meet somebody on the dancefloor. You go out with this hope, that you’ll have a good time but also that there might be somebody there, waiting for you at the end of it.’ Love and Dancing is a sensational, scholarly, elastic skirmish through the outer edges of disco, from soulful to cosmic, hands to the sky glamour and heads down boogie. Sample light, cover version free and diligently star-studded from across disco’s sparkling prism, it is the sound of here and now, nodding to the past while rollerblading into a brighter tomorrow, forever disco’s fleet-footed purpose. To mark the birth of the album, HMD have provided us with this beaut of an instalment in the SlothBoogie Mix series... you know what time it is... it's time for the weekend. www.commsolutionsmn.com- We hear The MN Department of Education and our school districts talking about the looming "education gap" between the advantaged and the disadvantaged. Minorities, the poor, and those with tough family situations can never achieve the same kinds of success as their counterparts that seem to "have it all". Really? Isn't American history rife with stories of people that overcame all the odds to achieve more than they had ever dreamed possible? Of course it is. Instead of studying those people and trying to find the secret to their success, the MN Department of Education just wants to throw $600 Million at the problem. Oh, we've tried this before, but have not seen any measurable improvement. Why not try it again? That's because they don't have any answers, save that the government is our answer. The only thing progressives understand is taking more of our money and throwing it at a problem with no plan and no accountability for improvement. We argue that they could throw $600 quadrillion at the "education gap" and never see the results they desire. We have some ideas... or rather some solutions. We'd love to hear what you think! We also check back in on the evolving saga that is the Lakeland City Council. If you remember a few episodes ago, we told you all about council member, Jim Stanton, who resigned... then tried to un-resign... then resigned again, because there was a disagreement about his being elected to the city council while holding two part-time staff positions with the city. Mayor, Richard Glasgow, supported Stanton staying in place, and after the departed city councilman left, unilaterally selected and appointed Stanton's replacement, Doug Sand. This has resulted in the creation of a concerned citizen's group, the cancelling of the meeting to swear in Sand, and the involvement of the Washington County Sherrif's office. Ruh roh... www.commsolutionsmn.com- Corporations and government are always looking for that next new fad to "inspire" and "motivate" to new levels of dedication and efficiency. We've seen things come and go from "Who Moved My Cheese?" to Six Sigma, core competencies, "Good to Great", the lean methodology. We debate the pros and cons of Waterfall and Agile project management. Another trend has moved through like a thick fog, putting employees to sleep. Cities and counties have picked up on the S.M.A.R.T. goals craze (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic/Reasonable, Time-Bound) to drive their agenda. In fact, the State Auditor's office began the Performance Measurement Program that asks member cities write S.M.A.R.T. Goals, and in return receive funding and a lifting of levy limits. There are a number of standard measures that need to be met in order to qualify for these incentives. Meanwhile, that huge sucking sound you hear is employee hours (and taxpayer dollars) circling the drain. A big part of this program are these useless city surveys that you receive and probably don't fill out. The questions asked tell the city absolutely nothing about anything. Cities and counties measure progress against S.M.A.R.T. goals and survey results and file a report with the Auditor's office annually. We're not saying that goals are bad. Planning is an important task, but these are goals created by the state government. Each city should be left to decide what's important to them. In response, we float the idea of D.U.M.B. goals. Help us to draft them by commenting! Did you hear about the push by the Wisconsin governor, Tony Evers, to give back to local governments the ability to use eminent domain to confiscate private property to build biking and hiking trails? They are making the argument that recreation constitutes public use. This is a dangerous precedent. In the Local Lowdown, we also discuss the mess in Lakeland, MN, where city council member, Jim Stanton, was hired by the city council to fill two part-time city staff positions. His wife was also hired as a contractor to the city. Mr. Stanton recently resigned from the council, rescinded his resignation, and resigned again, resulting in a division in the city council as to whether he could rescind his resignation to begin with. Grab some popcorn for this story, because it's gonna be a good one. Have you checked out our Spotify playlist?
