(superfly.fm)
This week we’re dancing to disco and boogie from Brazil as we feature the latest compilation by Horse Meat Disco, ‘Horse Meat Disco Presents Disco & Boogie From Brazil Vol. 1’. Truly an artist who needs no introduction to the No Tags universe, Midland is also one of the nicest people we know in this bottomless viper pit called dance music.Harry Agius has been a constant presence on the dancefloor since we were first finding our feet as music writers, and we've followed him every step of the way – from his early run of steppy house records on Aus Music and Phonica, to ‘Final Credits' mania in 2016, and his current incarnation as something of a grande dame of gay club culture. That role is one he's grown into slowly but surely, as he explains to us in this episode, and it blossoms into something very special on his debut album Fragments Of Us. It's far from your typical wham-bam, nine-tracks-and-an-ambient-interlude dance music long-player. Constructed around gay voices past and present – including ‘80s artist and Aids activist David Wojnarowicz, mould-breaking Black filmmaker Marlon Riggs, and Luke Howard of London institution Horse Meat Disco – it's a genuinely personal record that's also a kind of time capsule for future generations. We talked to Harry about growing into his identity as a gay DJ, the many, many reasons to turn down a gig, and whether Arthur Russell would have liked dubstep. Plus, he loves his films! We get an excellent recommendation and confirmation, if it were needed, that he's #PartyGirlHive. As ever, if you enjoyed this episode of No Tags, please do rate, review and subscribe on your go-to podcast app, as it does really help. We'd also ask you to consider subscribing to our paid tier, which costs £5 a month and helps us continue planning, recording and editing these (often long!) podcasts. Based in New York since 2003, she is a member of the multiple Grammy-winning Maria Schneider Orchestra, Grammy-nominated Darcy James Argue's Secret Society, and the Grammy-nominated Anat Cohen Tentet. Her eponymous debut jazz quintet album featuring Grammy nominees Sara Caswell and Geoffrey Keezer was released to critical acclaim in 2012. Her 2015 contemplative duo album of miniatures with pianist Luke Howard, Ten Sails, has garnered much international attention, with around ten million streams on Spotify and YouTube. Her 2017 album, Indigo, with vibraphonist/synthesist James Shipp was premiered at the Wangaratta Jazz Festival in Australia.Noordhuis' latest album, Gullfoss, features Maeve Gilchrist (harp), Jesse Lewis (guitar), Ike Sturm (bass), and James Shipp (synthesizers and percussion). They came together in Switzerland over three nights of live performance to record an album originally released on vinyl for Newvelle Records, and now available digitally on Little Mystery Records. Welcome to a delightful episode of our podcast, where we embark on an enchanting journey through the skies with the fascinating Julie Schultz as our guide. In this special edition, we dive deep into the captivating world of clouds through the lens of the Add the Wonder Nature Curriculum - Clouds Unit. Clouds are one of nature's most accessible wonders, captivating both adults and kids alike. Join us as we unravel the secrets of these celestial formations and learn why they hold a special place in the hearts of people around the world. We pay homage to the legendary Luke Howard, affectionately known as "The Godfather of Clouds," who forever changed the way we perceive these fluffy marvels. Howard's brilliance and childhood passion for meteorology led him to coin the iconic cloud types - Cumulus, Stratus, Cirrus, and Nimbus - which still serve as the foundation of cloud classification today. Did you know that clouds didn't have names until December 1802? We explore this intriguing fact and uncover how Howard's ingenuity paved the way for our modern understanding of clouds. Get ready to marvel at the awe-inspiring Lenticularis clouds, often mistaken for UFOs due to their unusual appearance. We delve into the science behind their formation, revealing how the interaction of different fluid velocities gives rise to mesmerizing wave-like shapes. We even talk about the Cloud Appreciation Society (ever heard of it?!) Clouds are nature's very own poetry, floating gracefully across the horizon, inspiring dreamers and poets throughout the ages. So whether you're a cloud enthusiast or just someone looking to explore the wonders of the natural world, this episode is bound to leave you with a newfound appreciation for the ephemeral beauty that dots the skies. RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey is joined again by Vidar Hjardeng MBE, Inclusion and Diversity Consultant for ITV News across England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands for the next in his regular Connect Radio theatre reviews. This week we have a triple bill of ballet performances by Birmingham Royal Ballet spanning 100 years with Still Life, Interlinked, and Apollo at the Birmingham Hippodrome on Saturday 10 June at 2.30pm with description by Professional Audio Describers Julia Grundy and Jonathan Nash. Three contrasting ballets created across the last 100 years, from George Balanchine's exquisite Apollo, to Juliano Nunes's Interlinked, and David Bintley's engaging but poignant look at human impact on the world, 'Still Life' at the Penguin Café. A colourful host of endangered animals seek shelter from the storm in David Bintley's ‘Still Life' at the Penguin Café. Featuring a morris-dancing flea, a ballroom-dancing ram, a hoe-downing rat, a majestic zebra and many more, this is an ‘unforgettable' (Sunday Times), witty and enjoyable, yet bittersweet and poignant look at human impact on the world. All danced to Simon Jeffes's delightful score, originally composed for the Penguin Café Orchestra. 'Pure genius' (The Sunday Express on ‘Still Life') The ‘quiet perfection' (The Guardian) of Apollo highlighted the genius of its creator, the then 24-year-old George Balanchine, and launched his lifelong partnership with the composer Igor Stravinsky. This most exquisite of ballets was regarded by Balanchine as his artistic coming of age. Its pared back elegance gives the perfect platform for the Company's world-class dancers to shine. 'Sublime' (The Sunday Times on Apollo) Brilliant young Brazilian choreographer Juliano Nunes's Interlinked was premiered in summer 2022 as part of the Birmingham 2022 Festival. Described as ‘stretching ballet's mould' by The Guardian, with a specially composed score by Australian composer Luke Howard, this beautifully abstract piece explores ideas of grace, beauty and harmony in ways that push the usual boundaries of classical dance. For more about Birmingham Royal Ballet and audio described performances of their productions do visit their website - https://www.brb.org.uk/access-performances (Image shows RNIB logo.

Look up - is there anything harder than trying to pin down a cloud? But a young chemist and future metereologist did the very exact thing - he categorised clouds for the world. His name was Luke Howard (1772-1864). Through out his life, Howard, a quaker and self-taught naturalist, gazed at clouds - his cloud taxonomy still holds strong today for the millions of cloud lovers around the world. Padma speaks with science historian and lecturer Dr Richard Hamblyn (Birkbeck University), who also wrote 'The Invention of Clouds: How an Amateur Meteorologist Forged the Language of the Skies', about Howard, the history of cloud taxonomy, and how clouds continue to hold centrestage in our imagination. This episode is a special release to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Howard's birth. There is a dedicated and enthusiastic group of cloud lovers in Tottenham (https://www.tottenhamclouds.org.uk/) that is celebrating by launching the Lordship Recreation Ground as the first official "Cloud Appreciation Park" in London. We were lucky enough to be joined by Horse Meat Disco's Luke Howard and Princess Julia for our Grace Jones Warm Leatherette album launch party at the all new Eagle London. Grace Jones teamed with the great reggae production duo of Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare on this 1980 album, and made the transition from straight dance and club act into quasi-pop star with reggae and urban contemporary leanings. The single "Private Life" was one of her best, and the overall album had more energy and production gloss than previous LPs that had been aimed completely at the club market. It helped that Jones seemed enthused about the session and really put herself into the songs. Read more about your favourite albums here: classicalbumsundays.com

Long Covid, otherwise known as the ‘post covid syndrome' is a multi system condition affecting the individual physically, mentally and emotionally. It has pushed health service resources to the limits of their capacity and is widely impacting our society. It can masquerade as other common illnesses, so as clinicians, we have learned we must keep an open mind on diagnosis in order for other pathologies not to be falsely attributed to it, as not everything is long Covid. Key to dealing with it are effective programs of collaboration and shared learning among specialists, hospitals and indeed insurers (as many people are crossing over into the private sector to seek answers and solutions). The pandemic brought the country down on its knees, but many great innovations and learnings have come to light to help us rise up again, better and stronger than before. The LNP want to give you a school chaplain to sooth your worries about climate change, and we discuss whether you can ever get away with a "BUT" after "death is horrible". Pre-order Nadje's new album: https://nadjenoordhuis.bandcamp.com/album/gullfoss Check out my favorite of Nadje's past work (Ten Sails): Bandcamp - https://music.lukehoward.com/album/ten-sails Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/album/7k6LMeVKzWrL9XHzNTPkXu Nadje Noordhuis is my favorite trumpet player, and is the primary reason I worked up enough determination to (try to) learn the trumpet. Yeah, that bit of trumpet in the intro is me, heh. She's from Brooklyn, though she grew up in and moved from Australia. She is a wonderful teacher and performer, and an wonderful person to chat with. I first met her at a very small and intimate studio performance she did with my favorite pianist (Luke Howard). To this day, that's one of my absolute favorite musical experiences ever. Nadje has a very interesting and inspiring story, as well. She had to struggle to make her way into a male-dominated scene where it was thought that "a woman couldn't handle the position of audio engineer" and being pigeonholed into "female only" jazz bands. She's since made some incredible contributions to music both through her composition/performing and her teaching. On today's Apple Seed Extra, enjoy a conversation with a few friends -- Dr. Tony Brown, Dr. Katya Jordan, and Dr. Luke Howard -- about Sergei Prokofiev's classic musical story "Peter and the Wolf." There's more there than you ever dreamed!
Unhealthy Baby Food (0:00:00) Have you ever had to tell your kid no way on buying a snack because it has WAY too much sugar in it? A lot of parents want to start their kids off right and keep them away from those delicious yet evil foods. But do these bad habits start even earlier than we may think, even as early as infancy? Doctors have recently been speculating that baby food companies have been starting our kids off on these harmful habits without us knowing by including high levels of sugar and fat in their foods. Joining us to talk about this subject is Dr. Sabina Rebis, a family medicine physician and medical journalist. Finance for Kids (0:13:13) There's nothing cuter than seeing kids do grown-up things. That is, until it's our own kids and it starts to cost us! A lesson that is vital to teach little ones before they grow up is proper money-handling. If we want our children to become financially-savvy adults, we have to teach them how to be financially-savvy while they're still at home. Here to help us do that is Personal Finance Lecturer, Janae Chandler. Gifting Experiences (0:33:53) Friend of the show, Carrie Ann Rhodes, gives us ideas for experiential rather than material gifts. Friendsgiving (0:50:34) We're getting pretty close to Thanksgiving now—which is such a great holiday—but with having so many family members in a room together it can also complicated and stressful. And while we're grateful for our families, don't we want to show appreciation for our friends as well? Well, we might have something you can do with your friends this year that solves this conundrum. Host a Friendsgiving! Here to share with us tips for celebrating our friends this Thanksgiving season is Suzannah Gerber, or Chef Suzi, vegan Executive Chef Consultant and author. The Experience of Live Music (1:05:55) Throwing in those airpods to listen to music just feels like second nature now. You can turn on your favorite song in less time than you can snap your fingers. And it's amazing. But music, just like many other things in society, used to be a much more social and cultural experience. Maybe we're missing something. Dr. Luke Howard is a musicologist and college professor whose research focuses on music reception history and the place of classical music in popular culture. With his research and knowledge on music history, we thought he'd be the perfect person to talk to about what we might be missing in our music participation. NaNoWriMo (1:23:48) Have you ever heard of NaNoWriMo? That is not just a bunch of baby talk, but an acronym for National Novel Writing Month, which takes place during November. It began in 1999 as a challenge to write 50,000 words of a novel from November 1 through November 30. All over the country, writers and aspiring writers are participating in this amazing feat. Any writer who reaches the 50,000 words by the end of the month is considered a winner. We have with us a friend of the Lisa Show and veteran writer Colleen Story to help all you writers get motivated.
