Brian Glenn reacts to the FOMC decision to hold rates and Powell's press conference. He expected a dovish tone from Powell but was surprised. He also walks through the dot plot and what it forecasts for the rest of the year. “There's a who blinks first mentality” with the White House and tariffs, he thinks, and in the meantime, he says small and medium sized businesses are struggling.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.Subscribe to the Market Minute newsletter - https://schwabnetwork.com/subscribeDownload the iOS app - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/schwab-network/id1460719185Download the Amazon Fire Tv App - https://www.amazon.com/TD-Ameritrade-Network/dp/B07KRD76C7Watch on Sling - https://watch.sling.com/1/asset/191928615bd8d47686f94682aefaa007/watchWatch on Vizio - https://www.vizio.com/en/watchfreeplus-exploreWatch on DistroTV - https://www.distro.tv/live/schwab-network/Follow us on X – https://twitter.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/schwab-network/About Schwab Network - https://schwabnetwork.com/about

In a fiery and eye-opening editorial reading, host Tara dives deep into a New York Post article that outlines former President Trump's significant early win in the tariff war with China. From China's secret concessions on fentanyl to explosive revelations about America's mounting debt and the GOP's controversial tax plan, this monologue weaves together trade, national security, and economic peril. Tara doesn't hold back on criticism—of China, U.S. leadership, or the spending addiction in Washington—and raises urgent questions about whether America can afford to keep ignoring the fiscal alarm bells.
Scott is joined by The Bulwark's Tim Miller to break down reports that Trump may accept a $400M jet from Qatar, a shaky tariff truce between the U.S. and China, and Trump's plan to deport migrants to Libya. In a week where US President Donald Trump played fast and loose with world markets, his global tariff threats became a reality, with brutal and immediate economic fallout. Dozens of countries reached out to negotiate – or, as Trump described it – begged and pleaded to have the import taxes on supposed friends and foes removed.

In this week's episode, Jeongmin, John and Joon Ha unpack a dramatic week in South Korea's economic and political landscape. They begin with U.S. President Donald Trump's abrupt reversal on “reciprocal tariffs,” which briefly calmed global markets on Thursday but left South Korea bracing for more uncertainty. John explains how bond yields, stock prices and investor sentiment all flashed warning signs before Trump hit pause. The trio then turns to South Korea's fast-moving presidential race, now officially underway after last week's Constitutional Court decision to uphold former President Yoon Suk-yeol's impeachment. With public officials required to resign 30 days before party primaries, major political figures are stepping forward — including Lee Jae-myung, Kim Moon-soo and Ahn Cheol-soo — with more expected to join in the days ahead. Finally, they preview a key date on the calendar: April 15, when the U.S. Department of Energy will formally designate South Korea as a “sensitive country,” a move that could reshape bilateral energy cooperation and tech export controls. About the podcast: The Korea Pro Podcast is a weekly 15-minute conversation hosted by Editorial Director Jeongmin Kim (@jeongminnkim) and Editor John Lee (@koreanforeigner), diving deep into the most pressing stories shaping South Korea — and dissecting the most complicated ones for professionals monitoring ROK politics, diplomacy, culture, society and technology. Did the tariff threats accomplish their end goal? Tim Walz was heckled and booed by military veterans in Minnesota today over his stolen valor. CNN had to admit prices were going down as Scott Jennings had yet another perfect moment versus a fellow leftist panelist. The White House takes a victory lap over its market recovery and Chinese tariffs. The Former Disinformation Czar Nina Jankowicz who now writes for Bulwark, claims Conservatives weren't actually being censored. DOGE discovered millions in taxpayer dollars were wasted on unemployment claims for ‘fake people'. A flight carrying lawmakers gets nudged on the runway at DCA. The House passes a bill requiring proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections. Trump signs an executive order rescinding a federal rule about shower heads. The DOJ goes after lawyers who spread election lies in 2024. The Assisted Dying Bill gave the Matts plenty to think about a few months ago. Since then much has changed as it made its way through parliament. Has any of it changed the Matts' minds? The answer is yes - but it's a nuanced and challenging difficult debate without any easy answers. All the more reason to have it, in true Two Matts style. But first - as Trump doubles down on his trade war with China (or is it now trebles or even quadruples down? We've lost count!), the Matts assess the intellectual coherence of those saying we should thank Brexit, and they also think about the long term effects of an effective shutdown of trade between two of the world's greatest markets. “It's all the president's decision,” said his Treasury Secretary. World trade again hangs on the whims of one man, argue François Picard's panel after Donald Trump reverses course with a 90-day moratorium on most reciprocal tariffs, but increases import duties on China to 125-percent.Will it be enough to ease markets in the long run? After all, 10% universal tariffs on the rest of the world still apply. Who between China and the United States has the stamina to win this fight between the world's top manufacturer and its number one customer? Produced by Rebecca Gnignati, Elisa Amiri, Ilayda Habip.
(AURN News) — President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced a 90-day pause on tariffs, softening his aggressive trade stance after markets plunged. In a post on his Truth Social account, Trump said he was still raising tariffs on Chinese imports and also authorizing a temporary pause and a reduced 10% reciprocal tariff on other countries. “Based on the lack of respect that China has shown to the World's Markets,” Trump wrote, “I am hereby raising the Tariff charged to by the United States of America to 125%, effective immediately.” Trump also said he authorized a 90-day pause on tariffs and temporarily lowered the rate to 10 percent after hearing from more than 75 countries and consulting with U.S. agencies. Trump added that the countries had “not, at my strong suggestion, retaliated in any way, shape, or form against the United States.” The announcement followed a steep selloff, but the Dow Jones Industrial Average rebounded 2,000 points Wednesday afternoon after the pause was posted. Schumer blinked. House Democrats are furious. But there will be more on that tomorrow. While the dust settles, I'm joined by returning guest ettingermentum to dive deep into the best and worst winning presidential campaigns. We rank every campaign from 1964 to 2024: Who ran the best campaigns, who completely fumbled, and which elections had the biggest long-term impact. Ettingermentum previously put together a two-part series ranking these campaigns, and I, naturally, had to make his own. So, we go back and forth, comparing notes, debating rankings, and making the case for why certain campaigns deserve more credit (or less).Justin's RankingsS-Tier:* 2008 (Obama)* 1984 (Reagan)A-Tier:* 1992 (Clinton)* 2024 (Trump)B-Tier:* 1972 (Nixon)* 1996 (Clinton)C-Tier:* 1968 (Nixon)* 1980 (Reagan)* 1976 (Carter)* 2000 (Bush)D-Tier:* 1964 (Johnson)* 1988 (Bush)* 2004 (Bush)* 2012 (Obama)F-Tier:* 2016 (Trump)* 2020 (Biden)Chapters00:00:00 - Intro00:01:04 - Schumer Won't Block Spending Bill00:03:43 - Ranking Winning Political Campaigns, Part 100:48:26 - Update00:49:21 - Mayor Pete Not Running For Senate00:52:45 - Probationary Federal Employees Rehired, Judge Says00:54:56 - Birthright Citizenship Battle00:59:00 - Ranking Winning Political Campaigns, Part 201:36:49 - Wrap-up This is a public episode. On the heels of another mediocre year for bonds, the first few weeks of 2025 have seen significant gyrations in fixed income markets. The policies of the new Trump administration speak to extended deficits and higher debt levels, bringing with them the prospect for a return of above-target inflation in the form of potential tariffs and reduced labor supply. Expectations for Federal Reserve activity are gyrating, with fewer rate cuts now expected. The tension between policy and markets has yet to break out into bond market vigilantism or sharply higher rate volatility. Whether that stasis lasts is another question. Marvin Loh, a senior strategist for State Street Global Markets focused on global rate markets, discusses the mix of these factors on the podcast this week.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
