For the 30th anniversary of Sunny Day Real Estate's iconic debut album, DIARY, we take a detailed look at how it was made. After Dan Hoerner and Nate Mendel began playing music together in Seattle in 1992, they asked William Goldsmith to join on drums, despite the fact that he was already playing in three other bands at the time. When Mendel went on tour with another band, they asked Goldsmith's high school friend Jeremy Enigk to jam with them. Enigk took over lead vocal duties from Hoerner and when Mendel returned, they decided to continue as a four-piece. In 1993, they played what was only their second show as Sunny Day Real Estate when Jonathan Poneman saw them and immediately signed them to a deal with Sub Pop. Embarking on their first cross country tour, they landed in Chicago at Idful Studios to record with producer Brad Wood. Their debut album, DIARY, was eventually released in 1994. In this episode, Jeremy Enigk, Dan Hoerner and William Goldsmith describe the circumstances of how they first came together and the unique sound they stumbled upon. Goldsmith talks about initially being courted by Hoerner and Mendel after they saw him playing in punk bands around town, and how he learned to adapt his hardcore-influenced drumming style to suit the music they were creating. Hoerner describes taking an experimental approach early on, focusing on drones, feedback and open spaces, contrasting with heavy riffs that were more common in the grunge scene in Seattle at the time. Enigk talks about bringing more of a pop element into the group and how his early acoustic work as a solo artist informed the dynamic music he wanted to create with Sunny Day Real Estate. From the unlikely marriage of a punk band recording with Brad Wood to a grueling tour that led to Enigk's shredded vocals to taking inspiration from Fugazi, Treepeople, R.E.M., U2 and The Beatles to inserting triumphant hugeness into emotionally heavy songs to a high school relationship that informed the heartbroken lyrics, we'll hear the stories of how the record came together.
Sub Pop Records is still the most totemic symbol of alternative music, 35 years after it was first formed by Bruce Pavitt and Jonathan Poneman in Seattle. It's roster over the years is like being a kid in a sweet shop – Mudhoney, Dwarves, Hole, J Mascis, Sleater-Kinney, The Mary Chain, Moor Mother, The Vaselines…..oh, and a band that never quite made it…..I think they were called Nirvana. I don't suppose anyone's heard of them……Megan Jasper started as an intern back in September 1989 and has been the CEO since 2016. It's a real honour and privilege to get such great insights from Megan and to hear her own take on some of the themes I've been hearing from the artists. We're talking about growing up a punk misfit, her love of music, jumping in the deep end and dealing with the joy, excitement and stress of the early, chaotic days of Sub Pop, the importance of values in your work, the emotional intelligence needed in her job and life generally and how to maintain resilience and mental health.I Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is a music podcast that does music interviews differently. I'm Giles Sibbald and I'm talking to extraordinary musicians, DJ's and producers about how they use an experimental mindset in their lives to amplify their own creativity, pursue new challenges, overcome fears and bounce back from mistakes.- brought to you by Hey Sunday, the mothership of the experimental mindset™.- podcast logo and art by Tide Adesanya, Coppie and Paste.
In this episode, journalist and director Charlotte Blum meets with Queen Megan Jasper, CEO of Sub Pop, the indie label that started it all. In the 80s, Megan Jasper started a long career alongside the label's co-fondators Bruce Pavitt and Jonathan Poneman as a receptionist and fell in love with the creativity, the bravery and the humor that ran in Sub Pop's veins. The conversation takes place in the label's headquarters in Seattle, surrounded by stickers of Mudhoney, Soundgarden, The Shins, Fleet Foxes and Sleater-Kinney.
It's a special Take 5, as we mark the 30th anniversary of Nirvana releasing Nevermind. This was the record that brought grunge into the mainstream, it changed the game not just for the Seattle sound, but catapulted it into a worldwide movement. To celebrate this iconic moment, I dug up some of my most treasured conversations from the Take 5 archives, with the people at the centre of the scene. You'll hear from Butch Vig, the producer who shaped Nevermind. From Jonathan Poneman, who signed Nirvana and co-founded Sub-Pop; the label at the centre of the scene. Billy Corgan will pop up, whose Smashing Pumpkins were another huge player in the scene. And we'll revisit my chat with Michael Azzerad, who penned a bestselling biography of Nirvana and also an iconic capture of the late '80s and early '90s indie scene in America, with Our Band Could Be Your Life. Nirvana's connection to Australia is significant too, and photographer Sophie Howarth will bring it close to home with her memories of hanging with the band and seeing them play on their only Australian tour. It's a wild ride, and I feel so privileged to have shared this space and these stories. So don the flanny, pull on the cords, let your dirty hair down, and revisit one of music's most loved era's. Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit Smashing Pumpkins – Disarm Neil Young – Ambulance Blues Fugazi – Waiting Room Feedtime – Shovel

Bruce Pavitt and Jonathan Poneman were two rock-and-roll fans who met at exactly the right time and place: Seattle in the early 1980s, where a raw hybrid of metal and punk was finding its voice in dingy clubs. With borrowed money and bounced checks, the two friends started Sub Pop Records, the iconic label that launched Nirvana, defined the grunge movement, and helped transform Seattle into a mecca for music.
Max Alt celebrates the 30th Anniversary of Sub Pop in this week's Max Alt Podcast. Former WWCT PD Marc Alghini sat down with co-founder Jonathan Poneman to recap the last 30 years of this highly respected label.
On today's episode of THE FOOD SEEN, the queen of Seattle's post grunge music/dining scene is Linda Derschang. With the blessing, and backing of Sub Pop's Jonathan Poneman, the Derschang Group began in 1994. First there was Linda's Tavern on Capitol Hill; now there's over ten locations: from seasonal pub Smith, two locations of all-day cafe Oddfellows, and the Ballard neighborhood burger joint King's Hardware. Lately she's been reviving Queen City, an iconic Belltown space, which has been a bar or restaurant for over century. It's her design, decor, and determination, that's defined her dynamic aesthetic for more than two decades. The Food Seen is powered by Simplecast.
Bruce Pavitt was born 1959 in Chicago IL. At the age of nine, he sold Christmas cards door-to-door in the summer heat, earning enough money to buy his first record player, and soon after, his first record (“Revolution” by the Beatles). A lifelong passion for music brought him to the Evergreen state college in Olympia, WA, in 1979, where he spent time as a DJ at KAOS-FM. Soon after, he started his own zine named SUB POP, which reviewed hard-to-find independent rock recordings. In 1983 Bruce moved to Seattle, where he started the SUB POP indie music column for the Rocket magazine, hosted a SUB POP radio show on KCMU-FM, was a DJ at the infamous Metropolis all ages club, as well as the Vogue and Re-Bar.In 1984, he co-founded Fallout Records, the first indie rock record store in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood. In 1986 he launched the SUB POP record label with the release of a compilation album: SUB POP 100, featuring NY’s Sonic Youth and Seattle’s U-Men. In 1988, along with business partner Jonathan Poneman, Bruce opened the doors to the SUB POP offices at First and Virginia in downtown Seattle. By the early 90′s SUB POP had released recordings by Nirvana, Soundgarden, Mudhoney, Mark Lanegan, Beat Happening, TAD, The Walkabouts, Steven Jessie Bernstein and helped initiate a global interest in Seattle area music. In 2012, Bruce released Experiencing Nirvana: Grunge in Europe, 1989a photo journal documenting his travel experiences with Sub Pop bands in Europe. . IN 2014, a compilation of his early Sub Pop zines and columns entitled,Sub Pop USA: The Subterranean Pop Music Anthology, 1980-1988. Bruce Pavitt currently lives on Orcas Island in Washington State. In addition to working as the Creative Director at 8Stem he also keeps engaged in music by speaking at conferences and festivals, consulting with artists and music labels, and as a DJ.

Jonathan Poneman - Co-Founder of Sub Pop Records, first to sign Nirvana and Soundgarden. Good bands can be found in any local watering hole. Great bands are much harder to find even with the digital music era. But the best bands, the bands that change the way we listen to music, the bands that define a generation - well they are truly a magical find. And perhaps no band better defines the grunge rock genre of the 90's than Nirvana. However, if it weren't for this week's guest, Jonathan Poneman, the grunge era may have never heard the melodic, angst ridden voice of the late Kurt Cobain. As you will hear in this episode, Jonathan grew up with the same hopes and dreams that many kids have - he wanted to be a rock star. However, in his own words Jonathan said, "I lacked the requisite good looks and the talent, so I knew I had to make my living elsewhere within the music industry." Lucky for us, he is apparently very good at discovering and popularizing great music. When he was handed a cassette from a friend titled "Kurt Cobain", he popped it in his ears and was instantly engrossed. Jonathan pushed hard and got Kurt signed, eventually the band became known as Nirvana. Join us this week and get the inside look on the Seattle music scene and what it was like to hang out with Kurt Cobain, the Smashing Pumpkins, and Soundgarden. Jonathan Poneman is a true innovator in the music industry. Sub Pop Records, the label that he co-founded with Bruce Pavitt, has been the launching ground for some of the best bands in the past three decades. Check out the Nirvana song that made Poneman a believer! As Poneman mentions in the interview, this is one of the best artists you have never heard!
In honor of Sub Pop Record's 20th anniversary, Jim and Greg speak with co-founder Jonathan Poneman and play their favorite tracks from the venerated Seattle label. Then stay tuned for their reviews of the latest album from Beck and the debut record from current Sub Pop artist Fleet Foxes.
