Nico Hoerner, Ian Happ and Seiya Suzuki are among the good players the Cubs identified as building blocks at Wrigley Field. But this overall group hasn't been good enough. Near the end of a disappointing season, Sahadev Sharma and Patrick Mooney of The Athletic analyze Hoerner's value as a trade chip, Happ's no-trade protection and Suzuki's potential future as a designated hitter. This is part of why the Cubs are expected to spend heavily on pitching this winter and entertain all trade possibilities, including the promising group of prospects who finished this season at Triple-A Iowa. Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals 5-4 win over the Cubs from Saturday at Wrigley as the defensive antics of the Baby Bears in the eighth inning allowed the Cardinals to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. We discuss the PCA and Hoerner mishap at length while also wondering aloud why Nolan Arenado did not end up at second base on the play (not that it mattered in the end, but I know it does to Cardinals fans!) Plus, recognition that the Cardinals don't win this game without Kyle Gibson settling in and competing for seven innings after a rough start for the first couple of innings. And we have to discuss a potentially damaging loss to the Cards as Michael Siani left Saturday's game with oblique tightness. Who could replace him if necessary? (You may already know as of listening-time but I did not when I recorded!) Follow this podcast feed for daily St. Louis Cardinals coverage all year long!

For the 30th anniversary of Sunny Day Real Estate's iconic debut album, DIARY, we take a detailed look at how it was made. After Dan Hoerner and Nate Mendel began playing music together in Seattle in 1992, they asked William Goldsmith to join on drums, despite the fact that he was already playing in three other bands at the time. When Mendel went on tour with another band, they asked Goldsmith's high school friend Jeremy Enigk to jam with them. Enigk took over lead vocal duties from Hoerner and when Mendel returned, they decided to continue as a four-piece. In 1993, they played what was only their second show as Sunny Day Real Estate when Jonathan Poneman saw them and immediately signed them to a deal with Sub Pop. Embarking on their first cross country tour, they landed in Chicago at Idful Studios to record with producer Brad Wood. Their debut album, DIARY, was eventually released in 1994. In this episode, Jeremy Enigk, Dan Hoerner and William Goldsmith describe the circumstances of how they first came together and the unique sound they stumbled upon. Goldsmith talks about initially being courted by Hoerner and Mendel after they saw him playing in punk bands around town, and how he learned to adapt his hardcore-influenced drumming style to suit the music they were creating. Hoerner describes taking an experimental approach early on, focusing on drones, feedback and open spaces, contrasting with heavy riffs that were more common in the grunge scene in Seattle at the time. Enigk talks about bringing more of a pop element into the group and how his early acoustic work as a solo artist informed the dynamic music he wanted to create with Sunny Day Real Estate. From the unlikely marriage of a punk band recording with Brad Wood to a grueling tour that led to Enigk's shredded vocals to taking inspiration from Fugazi, Treepeople, R.E.M., U2 and The Beatles to inserting triumphant hugeness into emotionally heavy songs to a high school relationship that informed the heartbroken lyrics, we'll hear the stories of how the record came together.
On this episode, Mark Simon (@markasimonsays) is joined by Rangers utility man Josh Smith (@joshhsmith4), baseball writer Matthew Trueblood (@MATrueblood) and SIS operations associate Mark Bricker (@brick26house). Mark S. and Josh talk about Josh's move to different positions, his approach to playing defense, and the tip he'd give to any kids that want to play defense like he does (a different answer than we usually get) (3:28). Matt and Mark talk about Matt's defense-oriented articles, including one on the aggressive defense of Willy Adames, the slight decline in William Conteras' pitch framing, the disappearance of the double play, and the experience of watching Eduoard Julien field 400 batted balls (13:15). The two Marks then talk about Bryce Harper's defensive approach, how Shota Imanaga has changed as a pitcher, and how the Yankees and Phillies are dominating with one pitching plan and the Brewers are winning with another (27:53).Thank you for listening. MLB – Major League Baseball – Opening Day 2023 Today Milwaukee Brewers at Chicago Cubs, 2:20 p.m. Detroit Tigers at Tampa Bay Rays, 3:10 p.m. News/Talk/Sports 94.9 WSJM 2:45 Chicago White Sox at Houston Astros, 7:08 p.m. MLB – MLB opening day offers clocks, shift bans, Ohtani and Judge A major shift is coming to Major League Baseball, starting on opening day today. New rules are now in effect. There will be clocks at stadiums to hurry along pitchers and hitters, and there are restrictions on defensive shifts for fielders. The full slate of 15 games includes matchups at Dodger Stadium, Fenway Park, Wrigley Field and Yankee Stadium. Aaron Judge will aiming at his own home run record, Shohei Ohtani will be trending with every pitch and swing and Houston manager Dusty Baker is trying to win another World Series ring. MLB – AP source: Minor leaguers reach 5-year labor deal with MLB Minor league baseball players reached a historic initial collective bargaining agreement with Major League Baseball on Wednesday that will more than double player salaries, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because details were not announced. The sides reached the five-year deal on Wednesday, two days before the start of the minor league season and hours after a federal judge gave final approval to a $185 million settlement reached with MLB last May of a lawsuit filed in 2014 alleging violations of federal minimum wage laws. Under the new deal, minimum salaries in Triple-A will rise from $17,500 to $45,800. MLB – MLB broadcasters adapting to faster pace under new rules Major league pitchers and batters aren't the only ones going on the clock this season. Big league broadcasters have also been using spring training to adjust to baseball's new rhythm amid a series of rules changes. When the season opens Thursday, Major League Baseball will usher in an age of sharper, quicker and more concise commentary. For a generation of play-by-play pros who grew up idolizing loquacious storytellers like Hall of Famer Vin Scully, it's been an adjustment. But not necessarily an unwelcome one. MLB – Cubs’ Happ: ‘Nothing really to report’ on negotiations All-Star outfielder Ian Happ appears poised to enter the season with an expiring contract after he and the Chicago Cubs were unable to agree on a new deal. Happ had “nothing really to report” and “no real comment on it.” He says he is not breaking off talks, but adds: “That also doesn't mean anything.” Happ is eligible for free agency after the upcoming season. Chicago hosts the Milwaukee Brewers on opening day on Thursday. The Cubs did lock in one key player, finalizing a $35 million, three-year contract infielder Nico Hoerner on Wednesday. That contract begins in 2024. Hoerner is moving to second base after playing shortstop last season with the arrival of All-Star Dansby Swanson on a $177 million, seven-year contract. NFL – NFL hits highs in diverse executives, lacks in head coaches The NFL took another step at the owners meetings to increase diversity throughout the league while continuing to face criticism and a lawsuit for lack of representation among head coaches. Each team is now required to have a person in charge of diversity, equity and inclusion. Currently, 15 clubs have a DEI head and two others have someone leading that department and another one. The league has reached milestone points in diverse hirings in the front office but critics point to the sidelines where there are only three Black head coaches in a sport that had 56.4% Black players in 2022. NCAABB – A different March Madness: Online hate for the athletes A toxic cauldron on social media is one of the minefields players in the NCAA Tournament must navigate. In an era of increased sensitivity to athlete mental health, never have there been more outside voices scrutinizing their every move. In the third part of a series on social media’s impact on March Madness, The Associated Press found that turning off social media is an option but not really a practical one. It’s unrealistic with the way society interacts in the 21st century. And many athletes need to use social media for endorsement deals. All of that, the AP found, comes with a toll best illustrated by spikes among athletes in anxiety and depression over the past two years. NCAAWBKB – Women making case in tourney for own March Madness TV deal The NCAA has gotten mostly positive reviews for its new women’s Sweet 16 format during March Madness. Hosting games it two cities instead of the traditional four set attendance records higher TV ratings. The two regionals combined to set an all-time attendance mark for the Sweet 16, following up the record mark set the first weekend. The switch in format was done for a few reasons including helping get a separate TV deal for the women's tournament. The current NCAA TV deal ends next summer.. The current NCAA TV deal ends next summer. The NCAA also hopes the success leads to more cities bidding to host the regional games and eventually the Final Four. The current NCAA TV deal ends next summer. The next bid cycle starts in July where regional hosting will be decided from 2027-31. Oklahoma City entered the night two games under .500 and hanging onto the final Western Conference play-in spot. Jaden Ivey had 24 to lead the Pistons. NBA – Bulls C Drummond ruled out after posting about mental health Bulls center Andre Drummond missed the team’s game against the Los Angeles Lakers after he posted on Twitter that he was deleting his social media apps to focus on his mental health. The team says Drummond is out because of personal reasons. Coach Billy Donovan says he is hopeful about the possibility of Drummond traveling with the team ahead of Friday night's game at Charlotte. Drummond posted on Thursday that it was time to focus on his mental health. NBA – NBA, players still talking about new deal as deadline looms NBA Commissioner Adam Silver says he’s hopeful that a new collective bargaining agreement between the league and its players can get done by the end of this week, though he stopped short of predicting that a deal would actually get struck. The league and the National Basketball Players Association are facing a midnight Friday deadline for either side to decide that they will opt out of the deal and end the current CBA on June 30. That opt-out deadline already has been extended twice, and Silver said the NBA's plan is to exercise that option if there is no deal by Friday night. A subcommittee of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce held the first hearing Wednesday related to college sports in the House or Senate in more than two years. The intended focus was name, image and likeness compensation for athletes. Nico Hoerner posted an excellent season for the Cubs in 2022, and proved he could be a main piece to build around whether at shortstop or second base. We break down Hoerner's season and consider how high his ceiling could be as a player. Plus: The possible Contreras-for-Urquidy trade is further proof the Cubs want to contend, and we enter the feedback zone by taking questions from listeners. Host Aaron Witt introduced Justin Hoerner to co-host Alex Horton via email with the subject line “Young Buck @ a Start Up”. Of course, the wheels immediately began turning, knowing that if Aaron is pumped to have another young guy on the pod, his story is going to be pretty good. Folks, Justin did not disappoint. Justin Hoerner is an Assistant Project Manager (/precon manager/marketer/assistant super/recruiter/IT manager…) at Bruce Builders in Eldridge, IA, a small commercial GC that a co-worker started and Justin soon followed him to. Since the company is in the growth phase, Justin is seeing first-hand how to build the business and is already a well-rounded part of the Dirt World. He's also a young guy who readily admits he has a ton to learn, but is thankful for the multiple stops on his journey. This week on Dirt Talk, Aaron and Justin discuss the risks and rewards of leaving a comfortable position to join a start-up company. Later, they dig in to why self-development is so important (ESPECIALLY when you're young), lessons already learned, and why some people still think it's controversial to move straight into a construction job after high school. Don't forget you can watch or listen to Dirt Talk on the BuildWitt app! You can learn more about it at buildwitt.com/buildwitt-app. To connect with other people who listen to this show, use and search for the hashtag #betterdirtworld and join in on the conversation.
