PRESCRIVERE Significato: ordinare, raccomandare ufficialmente qualcosa. "Ogni giorno percorro 10 km in bicicletta." Il prefisso ri- indica ripetizione o movimento all'indietro. COINVOLGERE vs. SCONVOLGERE La radice comune è -volgere = girare, ruotare, avvolgere qualcosa intorno a qualcosa d'altro. COINVOLGERE Significato: includere qualcuno in qualcosa, rendere partecipe. ...

I admire and respect Richard Jobson's contributions to the arts and civic life enormously. From where I sit, there's a fearlessness and determination to evolve, to try new things, to experiment, to challenge the sometimes narrow, traditional notions of what it means to be artistic, to resist those whose purpose in life is to sit in judgement and to redefine success and failure with more comradeship and less derision. To me, it's clear that his respect for the past is genuine and forthright, yet the present and the future have always been where the opportunities lie for a fulfilling life.My opinion was cemented having been able to spend some time around him when the Au Pairs recently supported The Skids on their Absolute Game tour. I have to say a massive thank you to Richard, The Skids and Paul Aspey for their welcome, friendship and professionalism from the off. It's pretty wild to think that when The Skids, one of the cohorts of the early punk scene that remains hugely influential, broke up he was just 21 years old. This is such a great chat to try and delve into how Richard has navigated through the world.https://www.iwannajumplikedeedee.comI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently. I only met Jem Doulton a couple of months ago and have had the privilege of watching him play several times with the Au Pairs whilst they've been out on tour supporting the Skids and also doing their own headline shows. Jem's predominantly a percussionist and drummer, but is also partial to the odd bit of crooning now and again. Now, getting together a list of his bands, projects and all that good stuff is where my research gets dodgy, but fuck it here we go with what's probably a partial list:  Thurston Moore, The Au Pairs obviously, Heckle Chamber, Grimm Grimm, The DNA Test, Melos Kalpa, Pando Pando to name but a few - I thought putting out a podcast once a week was pretty prolific, so that'll teach me - as well as recording a bunch of solo records, the latter of which was 2024's hugely imaginative and kaleidoscopic Deal of The Century. I think the collaborators on these releases shows the esteem in which Jem is held as a musician and person. So here's the interesting change in music at least from where I sit – multiple collaborations – if you want to call it that - have become perhaps the default way to be a musician these days - it's way more common to find musicians working on several projects – and often diverse projects. I don't know if this self-development buzzword “multi-hyphenate” - as it applies to doing a few different things in addition to your core job - originated from the music biz but whatever, it feels like this profile is a proper feature of the way that many, many more of us are living now.https://www.iwannajumplikedeedee.comI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently. I recently read a blog post of mine from 2019, not long after I'd quit my job and it was clear that I was riddled with self-doubt, some fear, some excitement at this new liminal space I was going into. And also worrying about what people think. What the actual fuck? I look back and think why?? Most people were excited for me and those that were sniffy, well, I thought I didn't give a fuck about them. But they still snuck into my brain rent free. The self doubt lasted a good while into doing my new stuff – managing a short-lived band (the short lived part had nothing to do with me, honest!), this podcast, graphic design for the zine. It's definitely eased up, so much so that I've started doing some video work and just recently I've redesigned a band's website. Ultimately, the thrill of doing this kinda stuff was too powerful a draw for the self-doubt to be the winner, although it wasn't fucking plain sailing.I first met my amazing friend and today's guest Lars Wolfshield when they were, amongst other things, managing the experimental punk band Pleasure Venom. We've become close friends since then and done some amazing trips together here in the UK, Europe and their current city, Austin. When Lars told me that the calling to actually create music instead of managing musicians was getting so strong, I realised there was a fair bit of symmetry to our journeys – reigniting our classical training, having some creative calling, uncertainty, anxieties. Yet, for me, returning to play my cello in front of people seems light years away, whereas Lars has gone full throttle into their new venture called Jet Cemetery with their partner and my good mate TaSz Trebuchet. Jet Cemetery's debut album The Canary will be out in the world by the time you listen to this episode – in fact it's out the day after we are recording this, but it's a wonderful – I'm gonna call it handbook for today's world lives where we are subjected to almost endless liminality, and one that explores the dystopia of the world today and brings together the light and dark, hope and hopeless, the soothing and the unnerving. Lars' celestial voice is layered alongside TaSz's subversively tender beats and synths as well as exquisitely saturated and distressed visuals. If you haven't checked it out yet, just go for it.https://www.iwannajumplikedeedee.comI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently. I started writing a book during Covid which in a spur of the moment I called A Re-Design for Life. I bet you can't guess what album I'd been listening to…... The reason for starting, apart from being able to satisfy some boredom and ego, was to try convey my belief that the most important asset we all possess is our self, especially as more and more of us are living multi stage lives and in a world that is so fucking complex and volatile, that the old rules are redundant. Much of society is so conditioned towards materiality - to think that the most important assets we should aspire to are material and have a monetary value – cash in the bank, house, blah blah blah  - but I think that that thinking overlooks the fact that our own intangibles – like curiosity, imagination, adaptability, resilience, instinct, critical ignoring and one of my favourites, emotional intelligence – are some of the most needed things.. I realise that this would some of the medieval politicians rolling their eyes, but fuck them. Not that they'd be listening to something as classy as this podcast.Back to emotional intelligence, I've often banged on that emotional intelligence should be an integral part of our learning from when we are first born. Empathy, social skills, self regulation and self awareness are so, so important for existing and thriving where we have such emotionally unintelligent “leaders” that seek to divide and conquer with a delinquent lack of empathy and self-awareness. Now, here's the typically amateurish segue into Miki Berenyi. If you haven't read her autobiography - called Fingers Crossed – How Music Saved Me From Success which came out in 2022  - then you really should, because that self-awareness and empathy that I just mentioned is all over this book. It really is a rollercoaster of a read and reinforces even more my belief of the importance of these weird intangibles. It's one of only a few recent books that has captivated me and left me with a lot to think about. And, of course, her music. In each stage of her musical life, she's written songs that can one minute haunt me, the next uplift me. I just find her songwriting breathtaking.https://www.iwannajumplikedeedee.comI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently. Atef and I go way back - almost 6 entire months! We met on a balmy end of summer night at the Shacklewell Arms in London and Crocodiles were playing one of the sweatiest and most perfect gigs I've been to. At the end of the night I said “See you in Spain in September” to rousing sniggers of “yeah right” from everyone - only kidding, they were delightful but, y'know, bold promises are often made when the euphoria of adrenaline is rushing. But, sure enough, I appeared in Murcia to take in some shows with them around Spain which was one of the most unforgettable road trips I've been on. I do think those times of shared experiences of wonderful people that you meet along the way, travel with and spend time with are when you make great friendships. It kinda helps when the music is as good as Crocodiles.I've thought a lot about what role music has these days in our society and I think it's always had this power to connect and bring people together, it's the shared language. I just think this is SO much more important these days when it seems like there is so much more to divide us.So here we are! Not only does Atef play bass with Crocodiles, he also composes, plays guitar and sings with his other band, the wonderfully named Hermetic Delight, who recently released their third album, the equally wonderful and wonderfully named, Vagabond Melodies and runs his own label. And I'm sure there is plenty more stuff that he's dabbling in!https://www.iwannajumplikedeedee.comI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently. When I was a kid in the 80's, I used to listen to a local radio show called On The Wire, presented by Steve Barker. Steve and John Peel were single handedly responsible for me finding bands and artists like African Headcharge, Sonic Youth, Tackhead, Test Dept, Cabaret Voltaire, Mark Stewart and The Mafia, Keith Le Blanc, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry and so many others. It was so, so thrilling to discover these new artists. And the show is still going, Steve is still going (albeit on Mixcloud because the BBC unceremoniously turfed him off the radio in favour of some shit pretentious show that'll have the listeners running for the hills.Anyway, he tags his shows with the magnificent term of “Undefinable” which makes me just love him even more because I loathe the whole way that genres are used to stereotype and pigeonhole. And this is where – in a long winded way -  my guest, David Roush and his wonderful band Ecce Shnak fit in. Undefinable. Going back to the release of Letter to German Vasquez Rubio around 13/14 years ago to their latest single Katy's Wart from their LP Joke Oso.

In 1987, the US Army War College coined the acronym of VUCA in 1987 to describe a world that was expected to become more difficult to navigate as the end of the Cold War started to become a reality – VUCA stands for volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous.Aside from it being kinda ironic, with what's happening right now, that the US Army coined this acronym, it's struck me that musicians have been working in an industry that has breathed this sort of uncertainty and volatility, whilst those in paid employment are now much more exposed to it after decades of living a much more three stage life of study, work, retire. So, it's always a joy and an education for me to meet younger musicians and chat about their life and music and how they are navigating through everything, so I'll just get on with it and invite you to listen to this brilliant conversation with Idyl, an amazing artist who recently released her first single Illusion in November. https://www.iwannajumplikedeedee.comI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently. I thought long and hard about what I wanted to say in the introduction today. I've felt quite rattled with some of what's been in the news, especially these last few weeks, let alone years, and it's kind of taken over my brain. But, I recalled a few words from Joe Strummer many years ago saying "People are out there doing bad things to each other. It's because they're being dehumanised. It's time to take humanity back into the centre of the ring and follow that for a time."  Music has always been there for me. It's always been my friend and I'm pretty sure it always will be. It's the one constant and I think as humans we need some constants in our lives when we live in what feels like endless uncertainty and volatility. I often wonder what role music has to play today and I think this is one of them, whether you are a musician, creator, listener, whatever. That ability to connect and be relatable.  I'm delighted to have Dani Larkin with me today, a songwriter who embodies that humanity, that connection and blends the old school with the new school in songwriting and arrangement that are as individualistic as they are beautiful. https://www.iwannajumplikedeedee.comI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently. In the last few 6 or 7 years – and bear with me here - I've become much more interested in the nature of the relationship between humans and other species, forces or whatever – animals, birds, trees, plants, the elements… nature, I guess. I think the genesis was when I listened to a conversation with the novelist Richard Powers and he was talking about his book The Overstory and how we should think of ourselves as being part of life itself, not think of living in terms of “our life” – a subtle distinction – but his conclusion was that it would help us all live more harmoniously. But the human obsession with domination, together with our selfishness I guess - and we're going back centuries here – has led us down a very different path where anything non-human is deemed as being there to serve us. That doesn't make any sense to me, it just feels destructive. It also made me think of our relationship with our senses – hearing, seeing, smell, taste and touch and, as hearing is the first sense that we experience in the womb, about how we listen to music – is it about pleasurable listening or is there more? Should we be going back further into times past to re-evaluate our relationship with sound? When I think of Guido of Arezzo, the monk who first started creating “music” by plotting notes on a page, was that when music first became objectified as a score on a piece of paper, almost imprisoned on the page? Should music really be more about a creative act of improvisation where it shapeshifts and changes each time you perform it? Is that how it keeps its energy? How do we listen with more intention?I'm getting to the point, you'll be glad to know! OK, well, Massimo Pupillo has just unleashed an absolute beast of a record with his band Zu. It's called Ferrum Sidereum (cosmic iron – yes, it sounds better in Latin) and it's one of the most phenomenal pieces of music that I've heard in a long time. One hour 20 minutes of incredible energy that bridges that gap between its creators, the vitality and energy of the natural world and me the listener. I once read music described as “our umbilical cord to mother nature”. This record feels like that. https://www.iwannajumplikedeedee.comI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently. One thing I'm aware of in myself and others is a shortening attention span and fierce competition for our attention with the sheer amount of information we have to process. If ever there was “it was never like this in the good old days” moment, here you are. As an aside, I actually heard that screenwriters are being told by production companies, distributors or whatever that they need to write scripts that assume the viewer will also be scrolling on their phone whilst watching their show. And like most things in the world today, it feels like an overwhelming problem to solve – and I think it is a problem – but we can all do our bit to try and reign in the relentless assault on our behaviours and art definitely helps. I even try to do it with the way I write my zine – deliberately scruffy and distressed so readers can't just have a cursory flick through it. I mean it's more layered than that, but you get my point. So…..here's the link – as tenuous as ever! - to my guest, Mélanie Pain, whom you'll of course know through her incredible work with Nouvelle Vague and her equally brilliant solo work.  Mélanie has just released her 4th solo album called How and Why and the final single that she released prior to the album launch is called Dreamloop and the song in its own right is truly beautiful, hypnotic and very unhurried. When you listen to the song with the video, you are transported into a world where the ordinary is anything but ordinary and it acquires implications through the camera loops and repeated scenes.  It demands you take your time and immerse yourself in what feels like a William Eggleston pastiche through a saturated looking glass. Sit back and let your attention span heal. The whole album is wonderful – enigmatic, sometimes optimistic, sometimes forlorn and always giving space for reflection. Look no further than Colours in the Dark – it is just sublime.https://www.iwannajumplikedeedee.comI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently. The genesis of this podcast was a thesis that I did about 8 years ago around the sort of skills and attributes that we will need for the future. I used a horrible term – human capital - to describe the value that these things give us because that was the terminology that was understood in the academic circles that I was submitting to. I now see it as quite a derogatory term, but the premis still stands – that our self, our own talent is our most important resource that we need to protect, nurture and adapt. It's all part of a massive shift in how we live our lives – from a linear 3 stage life to a multi-stage lifeOne of the big mega trends influencing these shifts continues to be technology – particularly the transition from the 4th Industrial Revolution of high automation into the 5th Industrial Revolution where the relationship between technology and humans takes on much greater importance.I'm saying all of this because my guest today, Halina Rice, is wholly immersed in using sound and visual technology for her live and recorded experiences where music, art, humans and technology  intersect. Her latest album, Unreality, and the accompanying visuals, is groundbreaking stuff.https://www.iwannajumplikedeedee.comI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently. New York has always been – bold statement coming up – my favourite music city. No question that it's connected to my life changing discovery of the Ramones way back when. I still can't walk past the Guild Hall in my hometown of Preston without a couple of nostalgic tears forming for when I first saw them play there  – I tried my best not to wash off the water that Joey threw over me when things were getting a little hot. But getting back on track… all those New York musicians over the years – infinitely different stylistically, but almost always identifiable as a New York “sound”. I don't know what it is – and hindsight's a glorious thing to have – but could the Ramones, Blondie, Public Enemy, Roxanne Shante, Lou Reed, Talking Heads, Swans, Sonic Youth, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Nas, have existed anywhere else and created their own distinctive sound yet is still a New York sound? Jesse Hartman's, Laptop, goes back to the late 90's – such a divisive decade. I really feel Laptop were ahead of their time and this is perhaps part of what makes New York New York – that ability to be ahead of the pack so often . They had the cinematic monologues, the rebellion, the self deprecation, the love, the heartbreak, the nostalgia and an ability to cross generations. I say that because I'm 20-odd years older and their second coming is here and I'm still hooked.https://www.iwannajumplikedeedee.comI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently. When I started out with this podcast, one of the things that I was – still am - interested in is the uncertainty of living today and how it takes us into living with liminality.  “In the middle of the journey of our life I came to myself within a dark wood where the straight way was lost.” The Divine Comedy – Dante  It makes me wonder if life always been woven together with paths of liminality. I guess it has. And perhaps what was liminal to someone in the 14th Century would not feel liminal to us now. I shudder to think what those folk would feel about the world today. Mind you, I imagine the 14th Century was pretty brutal. Not medieval for nothing. But how do we traverse the anxiety, turbulence and exhaustion that living with liminality can give, especially these days when the world feels so, SO fucked up. The feelings can be so very strong. I've also pondered (as I do – we all have our faults!) what the role of music is these days. I read a post by a musician friend of mine and he was expressing his exhaustion at living in this world. Is music and art the medicine that we need, either as creators or consumers to retain sanity, connection and community or to access our subconscious? Is it still as dangerous to the establishment as it once was?  This and other existential questions relating to our existence and how we move through the world might be pondered in today's episode with a songwriter, producer and musician who has such an extensive and rich musical history with some exceptional artists (one of whom, Debbie Harry, is unquestionably a legend) and has just released his latest solo album called 'Stories From The Borderlines', 11 beautifully crafted songs that brood with their imagination, poignancy, turmoil and hopefulness. I think it's a great representation of the world today and the wildly diverse emotions that I often feel.https://www.iwannajumplikedeedee.comI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently. I Pronomi Doppi: Dove Cade l'Accento?

I think relatability has become one of those words that has become overused and, as is usual with these things, the importance of what it means to be relatable has tended to become a bit diluted….it's unfairly become a target for the old eye rolling emoji. But, I think being able to relate to other people is such a powerful tool to have in our box in whatever way we communicate – through words, action or our art – especially when we seem to be such a divided world and seem to have little desire for even tolerating or even understanding different perspectives. It's not the only tool we need I should stress, but when we pair it with imagination and curiosity for example, I think it becomes very powerful for opening our minds to different ideas, ways of doing things, cultures.  I've asked musicians what they think the role of music is these days and views do differ – from getting strong political messages across to being a bit of fun to an escape from reality and to the deeply personal and cathartic. Anyway, whatever my pseudo-intellectual musings, it feels to me like music – certainly the music that I come across - is so much more personal these days.I recorded this episode on the day that Jessie Kilguss released her 6th solo album and it's called They Have A Howard Johnson's There, six beautifully crafted songs that are wonderfully evocative of life topped off by cover art that is resplendent in its 1970's hotel vibes. In fact, I remember my parents having one of those wood/mustard upholstery combo sitting chairs. So there you go, there's your relatability!https://www.iwannajumplikedeedee.comI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently. When Segs and I were messaging trying to organise this podcast, Segs wrote something like “we've got lots to talk about…the world is changing what feels like day by day”. Now with my meticulous research – OK, it was just by luck! -  I was reading back at an interview Segs, Ruffy and me did a couple of years ago just after they'd done their first tour of Spain. And we were talking about movements getting big and Segs said “The bigger the movement gets it has to get okayed by the government and the it becomes “you can demonstrate here and here and here between this time and that time, don't make too much noise and we won't kettle you”.And that was when Sunak – a Tory - was Prime Minister.Fast forward to now and talk about speed of change - we have a Labour government who are now probably more aggressive in shutting down dissent and protest than anyone in my memory. So, talking about the speed of change in the world, there you go…..Segs and Ruts DC are producing some of the most passionate and accomplished music that's entirely in tune with the groundbreaking music from The Ruts and just as relevant as The Ruts music was and still is.  Having them around, producing great music, taking a stand against the injustices, governments and corporations that blight our world, and doing it all with an unflinching, unwavering message of “people unite … never surrender” is, I think, one of life's victories that we should honour.https://www.iwannajumplikedeedee.comI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently. One area of my being that I've been working on is not feeling the necessity to be ultra-prepared for things. Things like my podcast episodes. I've been able to trace this back to when I was a kid – long story which I won't bore you with. I think this is tied into this obsession that a lot of society has with perfectionism – don't make a mistake, be ready for all angles, get it right first time – when really, human beings are far from perfect and we don't need to dig too far into the newspaper headlines to see many examples of this. So, I took the very brave (for me) step of doing something that's really important for so many reasons – getting out of my comfort zone. So, I have avoided any research on my guest today, other than he is a co-founder of the band Afrodream who have recently released their second and totally inspiring album called Guiss Guiss, a beautifully uplifting, diverse and rich mix of rhythms, instrumentation and vocals at the core. It's really, really special. This conversation with one of the founders of Afrodream, Luca Vergano, was perfect - fun, informative and inspiring. https://www.iwannajumplikedeedee.comI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently.

I do think of my formative years a lot – and I think this started to happen more when my parents died in 2022. Music started to become huge for me around 1976 when I was 8 and started playing the cello…but I did have some music differences of opinion let's say as I got a bit older and started to  listen to “bang and thump music” as my dad used to call it  – I really struggled to reconcile what I now know is a beautiful instrument with the Ramones, who were changing my life and pulling me in the other direction – it was like I had an alter ego. I mean, it's not a big deal in the whole scheme of things, but you know, each to their own.  Anyway, I just devoured more and more music – bands like Killing Joke, Siouxsie, Au Pairs, Minutemen, Husker Du - and as I found more and more stuff through, mainly listening to Peel and other local radio – like Steve Barker's On The Wire and Tony Michaelides on Piccadilly or just taking a chance based on whether I liked the sleeve, I started to get into more of the avant garde, off kilter, skrunky, weird – Neubauten, Alien Sex Fiend, Bush Tetras, The Fall, Butthole Surfers and then there was a bit of a lightbox moment with Tackhead's Hard Left around 86, I think before Public Enemy came along and changed things again. There was also another band who completely flummoxed, intrigued and excited me - and that was Fini Tribe. There was the underground and there was Fini Tribe. I had no idea how to describe them. They didn't sound like anyone else. I had no idea what they looked like. And I didn't know much about them. And I had no idea what to expect. And of course, we lived in an age of genre obsession – still do - so they were real genre party poopers. So, by the time I was listening to Splash Care or Detestimony, there were frequent shouts of “turn that shit off”. I was very used to this. Especially from the fella that liked Dire Straits. But Fini Tribe awakened an excitement in me – listening to them was like Alice Through The Looking Glass stepping into another world that felt as distant and exciting to me as when I got those first Killing Joke records… I never got to see them live so to now have a wonderful compilation of their 1982-1987 years called The Sheer Action of Fini Tribe, diligently and lovingly brought to life by the band with tracks I've never heard before including some live tracks, well, it's well worth the wait. This is such an exhilarating and fascinating insight with Christopher Connelly and Davie Miller.https://www.iwannajumplikedeedee.comI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently. As we were recording this episode, Natalie Hoffmann was a week or so away from releasing a third album with her band Optic Sink called Lucky Number and you're in for a treat. It's like a modern day film noir on the rainy, lonely streets - well, the streets were definitely rainy where I grew up – trying to discover who you are. After all these years, I'm still taken aback with how music evokes strong feelings of time and place. It makes me wonder if we are more receptive to songs or parts of songs - whether they be riffs, synth flourishes, percussion or whatever - when we feel particularly connected - with that time or place. I wonder if we are also, y'know, wired to be nostalgic to an extent. I guess we are and our brain is always looking for reference points so it can make its decisions. That line in The Buzzcocks' Nostalgia:“I guess it's just the music that brings on nostalgia for an age yet to come”….it brings up such an interesting way to think about nostalgia. Future nostalgia - not the Dua Lipa album - but situations where you are nostalgic now when you know you are going to lose something or someone in the future but r where you will be nostalgic at some stage in the future for what's happening now.So, the big question is: will I be nostalgic in 20 years time about the music Natalie is creating today – I'd be pretty confident in my answer but check back in 20 years time in a podcast from the future...https://www.iwannajumplikedeedee.comI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently. Over the years, I've been spending a lot of time thinking about Emotional Intelligence and how it fits in to how many people live their lives now, lives which, for many, are much more multi-hyphenate, multi-stage.With that comes much more uncertainty. I've read a lot by Daniel Goleman, who argues unequivocally that EI (or EQ) is as important as IQ for success in all elements of your life, especially how you navigate your working life, private life, relationships and physical and mental wellbeing. I'd also argue that society collectively benefits from investing in its emotional intelligence learning. Dr Goleman talked about the Dalai Lama addressing a group of gatherers in India: "Like physical education, learning emotional hygiene is in great need today.” I'd definitely agree with that as capitalism and all its symptoms – racism, fear, inequality, intolerance – becomes much more visible in everything we do. So, Emotional Intelligence covers things like empathy, self management, self awareness, social skills….and I must admit that, with some of the horrible shit going on in the world, I've found it harder and harder to maintain particularly empathy and self management towards others that are displaying some of the most toxic behaviour at the level where I want them to be. But, I was reminded when the good old Instagram algorithm worked and showed me an interview with a woman reaffirming just how important empathy is – even when we feel at our most desolate - if we are going to tackle the divisions that the world faces. And I think that affirmation was what I needed, I guess to believe again. So, with my little piece of self-righteousness over, it's time to clumsily segue into introducing Iris Gold who is the most wonderful singer, songwriter, artist and, dare I say it, fashion icon. I really love the energy, creativity, vitality and honesty in her music. When I thought about how I would describe her, the one phrase that comes to my mind is from Toi Derricotte's poem The Telly Cycle and that is….. “Joy Is An Act Of Resistance” https://www.iwannajumplikedeedee.comI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently. One of my interests that started well before I started this podcast - so we're talking maybe 8/9 years ago - was what sort of characteristics and attributes do we need as people to get stuff done in a world that was becoming more complex, uncertain, volatile and ambiguous. Fast forward 7 or 8 years to now and that world has changed at a pace that I'm not sure many predicted. One aspect of music that always intrigued me was how bands evolve. I'm not really talking about whether they evolve from one genre to another (although everyone knows that I really hate the notion of genres), but what they need as a band and as people to evolve. And I think curiosity has a big role to play here. That beautiful thing we're born with – you know, like when the next question from a small kid is always gonna be “but why?” - and gets kicked out of us at an early age by the establishment, cos hey, who in the establishment wants curious, challenging thinkers? Brian Amalfitano is with a band that I love dearly and epitomizes curiosity for new ideas, for new ways of doing things and one which in my opinion has a unique open mindedness for experimenting with sound and performance. Their recordings and live performances push sonic boundaries with as much significance as the early output of bands like Cabaret Voltaire, The Pop Group and early PIL in the late 70s / early 80s.And I have to say that they have a particularly unique ability to create an observant and prescient soundtrack that's scarily representative of a decaying world, in a similar vein to what The Dead Kennedys were able to create back in the 80's. In short. Rebecca Schiffman recently released her 4th album called Before The Future and it starts with a 9 minute song - which is remarkable in its own right especially these day -  but, in my opinion, it could have gone for another 9 minutes and not felt too long, such is the prowess of her ability to write captivating, enthralling slices of life that are at once nostalgic for the past and nostalgic for the future. The entire album is beautifully rich in unhurried harmonies and melodies and is like peering deep into the creases of her memories to produce an introspective meditation on, well, moving through the multi-stages of everyday living. It could be set to a 16mm flickering home movie of a William Eggleston pastiche. Ok, well, having probably humiliated myself with that self-indulgent twaddle, I'd better let you crack on with this excellent and very open conversation.https://www.iwannajumplikedeedee.comI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently. The last song on Violencia's album Viviendo Tiempos Aún Mas Oscuros is called El Exito Es La Droga del Futuro – Success Is The Drug Of The Future. For me, the nerd, this is interesting as I've often thought about how the words we use can take on specific meanings – appropriated oftentimes – I literally heard one just now – “Joy Is Resistance” started and often used by black women is now being appropriated by a bunch of white women. And there are times, where other equally valid meanings are ignored or treated with less importance. Take the words El Exito or Success and today, the majority of society will think of success in terms of material achievements. Are you climbing the career ladder, what awards have you won, have you bought that new shiny kitchen, oooh, is that a new car on the drive, how many followers do you have, did you manage to get your blue Instagram tick? It appears that there is little place for success being equated with just, well, human things, like, I dunno, raising amazing children or pets, helping someone in need to cross the road, or showing some empathy for your fellow human beings. Of course, yes, forced ultra-capitalism does this to the world and, as Joe Strummer once said “It's time to take humanity back into the ring”. Ever more now.https://www.iwannajumplikedeedee.comI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently. Attenzione a Queste Parole Problematiche 1.

I'm very excited and deeply honoured to talk to my guest today. Joy Guidry is a classically trained bassoonist - and, the first bassoonist on my podcast – who, with each record released (and there are three now), is showing a level of thinking and creativity that is, excuse the pun, a joy to witness. She brings experimentation, improvisation, the radical, the avant garde and deep reflection whilst always being connected to Black ancestry and sound traditions. Her latest album, Five Prayers, moved into a territory of solitude, refuge, peace, discovery and gratitude. It's a really stunning piece of work. I reconnected with the cello after many years of disinterest. The pull and push tension between what I learned and remembered from a classical framework and, I guess, where I want to go which is bringing in more experimentation & improvisation is something that I'm exploring. It's a slow process where I'm having to unlearn things and I'd hold Joy up as an example to anyone of the power of our mind to create music that takes a traditionally classical instrument out of that classical context and also to take you into the innermost sanctum of your humanity.https://www.iwannajumplikedeedee.comI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently. It's fascinating to look at the entire creative evolution of an artist - how they started and where they are now. Of course, looking at what's been going on in their life, can feel quite invasive and voyeuristic, like prying into the inner sanctum of life, but hey, all in the name of research! Music and art (although I'm by no means an expert) often feels subjective and open to interpretation and honestly, for me, I love it when I'm challenged to think about what it means to me. This brings me on to relatability. Perhaps it's now an overused word that has been diluted of its relevance and meaning. But is it important for an artist to create work that its audience will find relatable in some way? Will it help the audience make their own interpretations if they can relate to it? Or is speaking with truth and honesty equally or more important? And what about good old fashioned escapism? What does that connection between artist and audience look like? I don't know why the work of my guest today makes me ask these questions! Maybe it's because his work often feels like it is accessing what's in the back of his mind but created in a way that feeds my own interpretations and connects in a way that tunes into my own empathy. His art was described as “loose and raw that straightaway imprints itself on the human imagination”. This is interesting because it is the consistency of that rawness - and honesty - that also runs through his music which again gets my imagination fired up. I hope you enjoy this fascinating chat with James Johnston, who came to prominence in the early 90's with Gallon Drunk and has also played with PJ Harvey, The Bad Seeds, Faust and Lydia Lunch as well as releasing solo and collaborative work of his own. He started painting in 2017 which is just going from strength to strength.https://www.iwannajumplikedeedee.comI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently. I wanna be around people that have the ability to give off positive energy in this way.Scott Osment is one of the most blistering, powerful and accurate drummers I have seen. I've seen him in two very different bands – Deaf Club and Glassing – and I've yet to see him in Planet B – maybe in 2026??!! Each band has their own style and his adaptability to their styles blows me away. For me, Scott also has that presence that I was talking about earlier. You always feel that whatever the situation, obstacles, whatever, he will find a way – fuck it, let's try this, nah, we're good, let's go, yeah, I'm up for that. That willingness to try and if it doesn't work out, so what? Try something else. Again, I just think the ability to show calm and level headedness is kinda a superpower.I mean, I even put away my own insecurities when I asked him if he wanted to do this podcast – no mean feat - cos I really did think he would say yes. And he did!Enjoy!https://www.iwannajumplikedeedee.comI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently. Nostalgia is something that I ponder a lot as I get older – I've got way too much time on my hands. But it's such a layered emotion of experiences, some vivid, some half-forgotten and some probably embellished. The band you never got to see live. A long-lost lover. How good you didn't look in that army surplus jacket. Summer road trips. Friends lost. That gig that ended in a riot. I'm gonna read out some lyrics from a song by the Buzzcocks called ……..”Nostalgia”“About the future I only can reminisceFor what I've had is what I'll never getAnd although this may sound strangeMy future and my past are presently disarrangedAnd I'm surfing on a wave of nostalgia for an age yet to come”Nostalgia for today, knowing that it won't last forever. Future nostalgia. Seeing a band for the first time in a small basement, buying the t-shirt and anticipating that a future generation is going to do the same.I think I'm of a generation where I'm seeing music cycles reinvent themselves, come full circle, younger generations liking the same music I liked when I was their age, whatever you wanna call it. So I'm seeing this connection with my past memories, some good, some horrible (that'll be Britpop). Only kidding, but there are some songs I can't play because the memories are too hard. But that's life and that's the beautiful power of music. The songs of Jeanines make me feel like I'm flicking through a photo album of my life. Their songs very infrequently clock in over the 1 minute 30 second mark (which totally works for me) and makes it all the more remarkable that they fit in such addictive, poignant melodies and harmonies to perfectly craft their songs. Check out their upcoming, third album, How Long Can It Last, for a perfect 13.It was a pleasure to have Alicia and Jed from the band with me.https://www.iwannajumplikedeedee.comI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently. Over the last 10 years, I've been undergoing a - for me at least - massive transformation and I've been thinking a lot about what identity means – the identity that I present to the public, the identity that I present to my friends and family and the identity that I present to myself. With that comes a need to face yourself if you are going to find freedom. Our brains like to compartmentalise things and I think this is why we often get defined by society by our work or what we do. I mean, who hasn't felt their blood run cold at the question “So, what do you do?”… “well, I'm an accountant and I'm also a grindcore enthusiast”. Whaaaaat?? The reaction of horror! And we start to believe how we get defined, it gets normalised. And it's the same for music genres – it's easier to compartmentalise - they're hip hop, they're prog, they're folk, but it's so reductive. So the whole definition of oneself becomes an inhibiting self fulfilling prophecyI know for me it took courage to be comfortable with self-evolution, to transform myself according to what my body and mind is telling me and to ignore the voices of society to whom I had presented versions of myself. And only when we all have that fluidity, that freedom in ourselves, can we get to a world where the destructive forces subside and we make progress. The music of Dalila Kayros is like an evolutionary odyssey…from the beginning to the end of a song, of an album and, when I think about it, an entire catalogue. For me, Khthonie - the latest album - achieves a remarkable portrayal of perhaps what it's like to be in a world that is transforming and equally what it's like for oneself to be transforming  – moments of turbulence and tenderness, it feels like I'm on a precipice staring down into a black hole, there's the mysticism, the beauty, the fantasy, the malevolence, the fear and the euphoria. I want to pick one track - Corpus Sonorum – which closes the album and, for me, sonically depicts the knife edge on which we live, how quickly and easily we can descend into hell. Or are already on our descent into hell. From a spiritual perspective, it feels like the soundtrack of Kali Yuga and a manifestation moral decline and self-destruction. Maybe you'll feel differently, but it really is a remarkable piece of work - as is the whole album. This entire conversation with Dalila and her long term collaborator, Danilo Casti, is an education on improvisation, experimentation and dealing with being outsiders. https://www.iwannajumplikedeedee.comI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently. So here's a couple of questions for y'all…how much do you think improvisation, self-consciousness and self-belief are connected? How do you get into that flow state where inhibitions are shed? And can an improv state of mind be a skill that can be learned?I'm asking this with a bit of self interest as I have two practices that I've approached from completely different directions – cello and graphic design. And I am, as usual, probably overthinking things, but I do wonder how these work alongside my natural instincts.Karl Bielik makes art and music, both of which, to me at least, feel rooted in a mind where lawlessness, turbulence and spontaneity rule. I really enjoy the feeling of dislocation and uncertainty and surprise from listening to his music and it feels like improvisation and experimentation plays a strong part in his work.Earlier this year, his music project, Lark, released its first album for 7 years. It's called Be Still and it's another beautifully unpredictable, unnerving collection of ideas and inventiveness that, like the rest of the catalogue, displaces me, yet draws me back in.This is a really fun and enlightening chat and I hope you learn as much from Karl as I did.https://www.iwannajumplikedeedee.comI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently. It's fascinating to look back at the catalogue of band like Crocodiles , not that there are too many bands like Crocodiles. There's the consistency – the tunes, the hooks, the harmonies, the feeling of escapismThere's the unexpected – the sonic departures, the reinvention, how they make a new Crocodiles record always sound…just kinda Crocodiles… how they throw you an entire record of covers that blows you to the moon and then deliver something that confounds you but doesn't in a kind of “how the fuck do they do it?” kinda way..…they hit you with Upside Down In Heaven, which, for me where I am in my life now, is my favourite.Anyway, Brandon Welchez is now also getting stuck into a new project –  Psychic Pigs  – and it's this adaptability to doing new things, working with different people and in ways that are possibly a little bit alien, getting out of your comfort zone, this open mindedness to take on new challenges that really interests me and I hope you'll really get stuck into what Brandon has to say.https://www.iwannajumplikedeedee.comI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently. The opening paragraph of Justin Pearson's first book “From The Graveyard of the Arousal Industry” tells a story of how, when his mother had just given birth to him, that another new mother asked if she wanted to swap babies – her Frank for Justin. I'm not sure that JP himself is sure of the truth of that story, but hey, we live in a world where fewer and fewer people, certainly in government, media and other esteemed corporations, give fewer fucks about whether they tell the truth, so I kinda feel that it's my turn to say that doesn't matter if this story is true or not. Whatever…it almost feels like it could have been a pre-cursor or metaphor for his life where weird shit – good, bad, absurd and indifferent and everything else you can define as weird - often finds a way to his front door. There are just way too many stories for even my brain to compute, but I guarantee that reading each of his four books will make you look at your own life, and, afterwards, perhaps the temptation to buy that latest AI infested fridge freezer appliance might be met with a little less enthusiasm. Or perhaps you'll just think Fuck That and crack on and buy it. Who knows, the world is very unpredictable. Talking of which, for me it's the unpredictability of what's gonna emerge from Justin's open-minded creativity that gives him such a unique, positive energy. You can't predict what he'll be cooking up next and who with – maybe he can't either perhaps because that creativity comes from instinct - but you know that it's going to be exciting and you know that you will want to experience it, be part of it, whatever. Dig in to this with one of the world's most subversive creatives and wonderful humans.https://www.iwannajumplikedeedee.comI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently.
