Life of the Record
The Making of SUPERFUZZ BIGMUFF by Mudhoney - featuring Mark Arm and Steve Turner

Life of the Record

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 13, 2023 60:35

For the 35th anniversary of Mudhoney's first 12-inch record, SUPERFUZZ BIGMUFF, we take a detailed look at how it was made. After Mark Arm met Steve Turner at a show in Seattle, they became fast friends and began playing in multiple bands together. They started Green River with Jeff Ament and Alex Shumway and eventually added Stone Gossard on second guitar. Tensions over the musical direction of the band eventually caused Green River to dissolve with Ament and Gossard going on to form Mother Love Bone and Arm and Turner deciding to form Mudhoney. With Mudhoney, they had a vision for fuzz drenched guitars and blending 60s garage with punk rock. They eventually added Dan Peters on drums and Matt Lukin on bass and had their first practice on New Year's Day in 1988. Bruce Pavitt of Sub Pop offered to pay for some studio time with Jack Endino so he could hear the material they were working on. From those sessions, they released the "Touch Me I'm Sick" single in the summer of 1988. At that point, they went back into the studio with Jack Endino to work on the songs that would become SUPERFUZZ BIGMUFF. In this episode, Mark Arm describes his approach of “vocalizing” rather than singing, and how playing guitar with this band changed how he thought about song arrangements. Steve Turner talks about his discovery of vintage fuzz boxes and how they informed the Mudhoney sound at a time when fuzz pedals were out of fashion. From the early days of Sub Pop to rocking baby blue 60s guitars to Dan Peters' unique drum patterns to Matt Lukin's relief of playing simple songs to Sonic Youth knighting them as the next big thing to a pivotal moment in Seattle music, we'll hear the stories of how the record came together.

One of the great indirect heroes of modern rock'n'roll was born on March 21, 1865...his name was brigadier general George Owen Squier....he was an Army officer with a PhD in electrical science and a thing for music....he invented a technology to designed to compete with a new thing called “radio”.... Wireless radio, he figured, was useless...it was prone to static and fade-outs and just didn't sound very good...his idea was to run wires into homes and businesses, just like we have with cable TV today or as they were beginning to do with telephones back then...he called the concept “wired radio”.... Just before he died in 1934, he came up with a new name for his invention.....playing with the words “music” and “Kodak,” he came up with “Muzak”... The whole thing with “wired radio” didn't take off with consumers, but businesses were into it...closed circuit music, specifically tailored to their environment, 24 hours a day without interruption or static?...that's brilliant....and shopping malls and elevators haven't been the same since....Muzak became the world's biggest supplier of elevator music... So where am I going with this...great question... By the 70s, Muzak corporation was earning more than $400 million a year by distributing this type of music all over the world from its headquarters in Seattle.....it was used for crowd control, a management tool and something to fill the empty silence of a department store or dentist's office... And for a time, the Muzak executives thought this was a good unofficial slogan: “boring work is made less boring by boring music”....you bored yet?... Fifty-two years after the George Squire died, a new type of music started coming from the back room of Muzak headquarters in Seattle......but it wasn't exactly elevator music.... The music came from the shipping room where a Muzak employee named Bruce Pavitt spent his coffee breaks running a new independent record label devoted to the local music scene.....in fact, Muzak's payroll supported at least half a dozen local musicians......and while no one could have possibly known what where this was going to lead, the decidedly non-muzak music these people were into would eventually change the world of rock'n'roll forever..... This is the complete history of alt-rock, chapter 11... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Sub Pop Records is still the most totemic symbol of alternative music, 35 years after it was first formed by Bruce Pavitt and Jonathan Poneman in Seattle. It's roster over the years is like being a kid in a sweet shop – Mudhoney, Dwarves, Hole, J Mascis, Sleater-Kinney, The Mary Chain, Moor Mother, The Vaselines…..oh, and a band that never quite made it…..I think they were called Nirvana. I don't suppose anyone's heard of them……Megan Jasper started as an intern back in September 1989 and has been the CEO since 2016. It's a real honour and privilege to get such great insights from Megan and to hear her own take on  some of the themes I've been hearing from the artists. We're talking about growing up a punk misfit, her love of music, jumping in the deep end and dealing with the joy, excitement and stress of the early, chaotic days of Sub Pop, the importance of values in your work, the emotional intelligence needed in her job and life generally and how to maintain resilience and mental health.I Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is a music podcast that does music interviews differently. I'm Giles Sibbald and I'm talking to extraordinary musicians, DJ's and producers about how they use an experimental mindset in their lives to amplify their own creativity, pursue new challenges, overcome fears and bounce back from mistakes.- brought to you by Hey Sunday, the mothership of the experimental mindset™.- podcast logo and art by Tide Adesanya, Coppie and Paste.

Grunge, a story of music and rage

In this episode, journalist and director Charlotte Blum meets with Queen Megan Jasper, CEO of Sub Pop, the indie label that started it all. In the 80s, Megan Jasper started a long career alongside the label's co-fondators Bruce Pavitt and Jonathan Poneman as a receptionist and fell in love with the creativity, the bravery and the humor that ran in Sub Pop's veins. The conversation takes place in the label's headquarters in Seattle, surrounded by stickers of Mudhoney, Soundgarden, The Shins, Fleet Foxes and Sleater-Kinney.

Bruce Pavitt and Jonathan Poneman were two rock-and-roll fans who met at exactly the right time and place: Seattle in the early 1980s, where a raw hybrid of metal and punk was finding its voice in dingy clubs. With borrowed money and bounced checks, the two friends started Sub Pop Records, the iconic label that launched Nirvana, defined the grunge movement, and helped transform Seattle into a mecca for music.

You can’t discuss the recorded history of Grunge without talking to SUB POP records founder Bruce Pavitt. Any list of the Greatest Grunge anything would contain a large chunk of DNA from that label and it’s artists. Bruce shares anecdotes from his entire time with SUB POP and of course what it was like to be at the Epicenter of Rock’s last great scene. Bruce Pavitt was born 1959 in Chicago IL. At the age of nine, he sold Christmas cards door-to-door in the summer heat, earning enough money to buy his first record player, and soon after, his first record (“Revolution” by the Beatles). A lifelong passion for music brought him to the Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA, in 1979, where he spent time as a DJ at KAOS-FM. Soon after, he started his own zine named SUB POP, which reviewed hard-to-find independent rock recordings. In 1988, along with business partner Jon Poneman, Bruce opened the doors to the SUB POP record label in downtown Seattle. By the early 90′s, SUB POP had released recordings by Nirvana, Soundgarden and Mudhoney, and helped initiate a global interest in Seattle area music. Both an entrepreneur and music historian, Bruce has authored two books, Experiencing Nirvana and SUB POP USA, a collection of his early Sub Pop zines and syndicated columns. Recognized as a cultural visionary and Seattle business icon, Bruce has appeared in a number of documentaries, including Sonic Highways and Hype. His footprints have been bronzed and embedded into the Walk of Fame sidewalk at 6th and Pine in Seattle, alongside Jimi Hendrix and Bill Gates. Bruce Pavitt currently lives on Orcas Island, Washington. He is the father of two, and works as Creative Director at 8Stem interactive media. https://brucepavitt.com/ https://www.subpop.com/

After founding Sub Pop, signing Nirvana, and putting Seattle on the map while orchestrating the worldwide Grunge phenomenon, Bruce Pavitt took a step back. He "retired" from the music industry to raise a family on Orcas, a remote island in the Northwest corner of Washington State. It’s a small community, so it wasn’t long before he met musician, producer and tech entrepreneur, Adam Farish. The two bonded over a shared love of music, and discussed what the future of the industry would look like. They agreed it would be participatory, interactive, and mobile. Fast forward 10 years, and iOS technology finally caught up to their shared vision. Soon Adam began to design a new audio format and platform that would allow any listener to remix music on their phone. Adam then showed his prototype to Bruce. Bruce, given his history in promoting regional culture, immediately saw it as a way to revolutionize the music industry. They officially incorporated as 8Stem in 2015, and set out to launch music 2.0. 8Stem is a revolutionary, interactive audio format that allows any listener to remix music like a professional DJ or sound engineer. Paired with the first multi-channel playback and remixing app, 8Stem signals a new era of music that is participatory, immediate and social. https://8stem.com https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/8stem/id1025280903?ls=1&mt=8 https://twitter.com/8stem

Jonathan Poneman - Co-Founder of Sub Pop Records, first to sign Nirvana and Soundgarden. Good bands can be found in any local watering hole.  Great bands are much harder to find even with the digital music era.  But the best bands, the bands that change the way we listen to music, the bands that define a generation - well they are truly a magical find.  And perhaps no band better defines the grunge rock genre of the 90's than Nirvana.  However, if it weren't for this week's guest, Jonathan Poneman, the grunge era may have never heard the melodic, angst ridden voice of the late Kurt Cobain. As you will hear in this episode, Jonathan grew up with the same hopes and dreams that many kids have - he wanted to be a rock star.  However, in his own words Jonathan said, "I lacked the requisite good looks and the talent, so I knew I had to make my living elsewhere within the music industry." Lucky for us, he is apparently very good at discovering and popularizing great music.  When he was handed a cassette from a friend titled "Kurt Cobain", he popped it in his ears and was instantly engrossed.  Jonathan pushed hard and got Kurt signed, eventually the band became known as Nirvana. Join us this week and get the inside look on the Seattle music scene and what it was like to hang out with Kurt Cobain, the Smashing Pumpkins, and Soundgarden.  Jonathan Poneman is a true innovator in the music industry. Sub Pop Records, the label that he co-founded with Bruce Pavitt, has been the launching ground for some of the best bands in the past three decades. Check out the Nirvana song that made Poneman a believer! As Poneman mentions in the interview, this is one of the best artists you have never heard!
