Kara Walker is one of America's most significant living artists, known for cut-paper silhouettes and gigantic public sculptures, using the visual artefacts of slavery in nightmarish black and white scenes. At the heart is an exploration of race, sexuality and gender, and a critique of white supremacy. Could the black-humoured delivery of the message get lost on Australian audiences? Hopefully not – two of her works, Your World is About to Change and a film, Testimony: Narrative of a Negress Burdened by Good Intentions – have been acquired by the National Gallery of Australia. Daniel was in conversation with Kara Walker for the NGA's Annual Lecture in 2022. First broadcast September 2022.My Thing is… anti-fashion. Kiel Rogers fell into haute couture after doing TAFE work experience at the WA Ballet. He's since travelled the world and worked with some of the best, dressing Billie Eilish and Lady Gaga along way. Now back on home soil, Rogers returned to his punk roots with his streetwear label Garbage TV. First broadcast April 2023.Rosa visits the studio of Filipino Australian artist Mark Valenzuela. Raised in army camps across Mindanao, Valenzuela found his way to art and used it to challenge authority and state violence. His sculptural installations are a surreal and poetic take on the military, animist beliefs and living in two worlds. A monograph is published by Wakefield Press. First broadcast May 2023.

There's an enduring appetite for novels about artists and their muses. Australian writers Kylie Needham (Girl in a Pink Dress) and Edwina Preston (Bad Art Mother) have written books centred on women artists who are navigating ambition, doubt, and freedom in art scenes where men wield the power and where women are routinely cast as muses rather than as creators. Recorded for RN's Big Weekend of Books 2023.Larrakia artist Gary Lee has led a powerfully creative life including pioneering work in Indigenous queer sexual health during the AIDS epidemic. Deconstructing the identity of the characters in famous Australian artworks is just one strand of her four-decade career. Anne talks to Rosa about using old-school museum dioramas to imagine climate crisis scenarios, and her immigrant Jewish mother's story of survival. My Thing is…the community reading room. Fijian-Australian artist Torika Bolatagici started her own reading room, an archive of books and ephemera about the creative practices of First Nations, Black and global Indigenous artists of colour, which people can use for free. Needlepoint artist Jessie Deane stitches intricate scenes of Melbourne's western suburbs. She's loving the Big Build, an infrastructure project which is causing a headache for train commuters, but is a thrill for an artist who specialises in industrial landscapes. What the Riff?!?

The California band Cracker would have its greatest success with its second studio album, Kerosene Hat.  Cracker is David Lowery on lead vocals and guitar, Johnny Hickman on lead guitar and vocals, Davey Faragher on bass and vocals, and Michael Urbano on drums.  The name of the album comes from a time when Lowery and Hickman lived together in an old run-down house whose only heat source was a pair of kerosene heaters.  They had to walk to a nearby gas station to buy more kerosene and would bundle up with a wool cap that came to be known as the kerosene hat.  While the group considered themselves more drawn to roots rock or country, the album went platinum during the days of grunge as an alternative rock sound.  It definitely does not follow the over produced "hair band" sound that was beginning to wane in the early 90's.  Much of the album was recorded in an abandoned sound stage in Pioneertown, California, in a location so run down that the group had to round up old mattresses from junk yards to provide insulation on colder days. The band holds a music festival there each year. Wayne leads this expedition into the early 90's rock scene. LowThis single only reached number 64 on the US Billboard Hot 100, but it was number 3 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks.  Lowery claimed that the song was not about drugs, and that the lyric is not "like being stoned," but "like being stone."  Other lyrics like "a million poppies gonna make me sleep" make this claim seem a bit more dubious.Get Off ThisThe second single from the album is a response to former fans who accused Cracker of selling out to make more mainstream music.  The response is obvious from the chorus:  "So let's get off this, and get on with it.  If you wanna change the world, shut your mouth and start to spin it."Lets Go for a Ride This deeper track is well described by the title - it is a driving song.  "So, drive real fast through the underpass, and if we die or if we crash, well, I'd be flattered to be buried right next to you." Euro-Trash Girl This is a bit of a "hidden track" on the CD (coming in at #69), and is a favorite of serious Cracker fans.  It was originally released on the EP "Tucson"  It tells the story of a lonely guy in Europe who suffers through a series of break-ups.  The band wrote this as a group, partly based on things the members had experienced, and some made up situations. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:I Can See Clearly Now by Jimmy Cliff (from the motion picture “Cool Runnings”)The appearance of the Jamaican national team in the bobsled event for the 1988 Winter Olympics inspired this movie staring John Candy. STAFF PICKS:Sober by TOOLRob brings us a grunge song from the Los Angeles band Tool.  The song is off their debut album, but it was most known for its creepy stop-action video.  Similarities to Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir" have prompted a number of mash-ups.  The lyrics were inspired by a friend of the band whose creativity only came out when he was under the influence.Hey Jealousy by Gin BlossomsThe song Brian features was written by guitarist Doug Hopkins about his former girlfriend.  Hopkins was fired for unreliability associated with his heavy drinking, but the song propelled the Gin Blossoms to success.  Hopkins became depressed and committed suicide in December 1993. Perfectly Good Guitar by John HiattBruce's staff pick is a minor key blues number from a singer-songwriter who has worked with a tremendous amount of artists.  This song from his eleventh studio album laments the way that rock stars get attention by smashing up perfectly good guitars.Bad Thing by Cry of LoveWayne's staff pick is a deeper cut.  Cry of Love is out of Raleigh, North Carolina, and has a sound reminiscent of Bad Company.  It was a throwback to solid 70's rock during a time when that genre of music was out of favor.  Band members would go on to perform with other groups including the Black Crowes and Lynyrd Skynyrd. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Leave That Thing Alone by RushThis instrumental from the Counterpoints album is a bit of a continuation of the "Where's My Thing" instrumental from Rush's previous album.

What the Riff?!?
1991 - November: U2 "Achtung Baby"

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 5, 2021 38:59

If "The Joshua Tree" was the album that propelled Irish band U2 to the stratosphere of rock success, Achtung Baby was the album that would cement them in that status permanently.  The band was coming off mixed success with their hybrid live/studio album "Rattle and Hum," and were struggling directionally.  The band felt that they were not prepared for the success they had received, or as drummer Larry Mullin, Jr. put it, "we were the biggest, but we weren't the best.”Achtung Baby draws its inspiration from German reunification, much like the Joshua Tree and Rattle and Hum drew inspiration from America.  U2 began recording in Berlin at Hansa Studios.  They arrived just before German reunification.  Rather than being inspired by reunification, the band found places gloomy and neglected.  Morale continued to falter as they struggled with the direction of the album, and actually considered breaking up.  With the encouragement of producer Brian Eno, the band continued on, and recommitted themselves to the group after returning to Dublin during Christmas.  Recording was relocated to Dublin in February of 1991.Musically, the album has a more Eurocentric feel.  Bono and the Edge were gravitating to electronica and new sounds while Clayton and Mullin, Jr. preferred sounds more reminiscent of classic rock.  The synthesis created a sound that was less "over the top" than previous U2 works, and really opened up the commercial success of the group.  While the sound might be less "over the top," the forthcoming tour called "Zoo TV" was the epitome of "over the top."  By this time, U2 was performing not in concert halls, but in stadiums. This is an album that will definitely get your attention. Even Better Than the Real ThingThis second track on the album was the fourth single released.  The song originated from a guitar riff created during the "Rattle and Hum" sessions.  The song is about the instant gratification of commercialism and its effects on society.  There's a more "techno" sound in this song, with the guitar delays and the double octaves throughout.Mysterious WaysWhat a great hook at the start of this song!  Jesus Jones was an influence on the group at the time, and you can feel it on this track.  The song itself is an idealization of women, and the trap of separating them into angels and devils.  The video was shot in Morocco and used a belly dancer to portray that "she moves in mysterious ways."OneThis is the song that brought the group back together when they were struggling in their recording sessions in Berlin.  The song itself is vaguely about relationships and may have been influenced by the dissolution of the Edge's marriage to Aislinn O'Sullivan.  Until the End of the WorldThis deeper cut from the album is set in a Biblical setting with Bono singing as Judas in a conversation with Jesus.  "We ate the food, we drank the wine.  Everybody having a good time except you.  You were talking about the end of the world."  It was never released as a single. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the motion picture “The Addams Family”The movie based on the 60's television series was released in November. STAFF PICKS:“Everything About You” by Ugly Kid JoeWayne kicks off the staff picks with a song off the EP Ugly As They Wanna Be.  The song describes everything the singer hates.  The name of the group is a spoof on the name of the group "Pretty Boy Floyd," and they have been described as the last glam metal band.  “Lies” by EMFRob takes us into the British alternative rock scene.  This is off EMF's debut album Schubert Dip.  EMF takes its name from a fan club of the band New Order called "Epsom Mad Funkers."  The album made it to number 3 on the UK charts, though it didn't do as well in the United States.  “The Sky is Crying” by Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double TroubleBruce's Brings us a song posthumously released after Vaughan's helicopter crash in 1990.  It was originally recorded by Elmore James in 1959, and was performed by The AllmanBrothers Band at Duane Allman's funeral in 1971.  Jimmie Vaughan compiled the songs on this album, also called "The Sky is Crying," and all but one song had not been released previously.“Something to Talk About” by Bonnie RaittBrian's pick is Bonnie Raitt's breakout single.  Originally written by Shirley Eikhard, the song is about friends in a small town where everyone knows everyone else's business.  If everyone is assuming we're a couple, maybe we should give them something to talk about!   INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:“Where's My Thing” by RushThis instrumental from Roll the Bones came after several songs started as instrumentals but became perfect for a particular lyric.  Finally, drummer and lyricist told the band “You keep promising to do this instrumental, and I'm not giving you any more lyrics until you write this thing.”

After a brief pause for the cause, *The Upful LIFE Podcast* is back with Episode 026 featuring Ryan Jalbert of The Motet. In late December, on the heels of The Motet's co-headline funkstravaganza at the Fillmore with KDTU, Ryan and I finally caught up for an hour in downtown San Francisco. Jalbert was on his way to a jazz show at the Black Cat, but took timeout to make sure we got the proper time for a powwow. I've been a fan of his for several years now, and Ryan has been a listener to this podcast since almost the beginning too, as such it was a pretty cool dynamic for the interview. We basically just kicked it for a while, chopped it up about his path taken, with some attention to detail and the typical musical/cultural rabbit holes. This conversation covers his entire musical journey, from his childhood in Western Mass, learning the guitar, loving the blues as a kid, up through college, Phish tours, the music scene in the Northeast in the early 2000s, working with Brett Dennen, Leslie Helpert, joining The Motet, and then his 15-year odyssey that continues up through their most recent LP Death or Devotion. We finish with a little bit on his side project Jalbatross with brother Colin, as well as some of his recent favorite artists. How to be ok with letting go of the things that “seem like a good idea”.Often, it’s easy to get caught up in the rushing in of a brilliant new idea. The moment when the idea lands, in our brain, many of us want to race out and scream at the EUREKA! This is it - the thing - the idea, program, mastermind, e-course, series that is going to be MY THING! But then the small voice, in your head (or a real voice of someone you share with) sows the seed of doubt. “Is this really the thing?” or is this “just another crazy idea?”Karly and Lisa take you through their processes of ideation and creation and leaning into the resistance of the new “great idea”. They speak of how letting go of the attachment to the external outcome facilitates your most aligned ideas rising to the top and becoming the parts of your business that you can feel most connected with. The resistance and fear will show up ALL the TIME! Trust that sometimes you need to take a step towards the idea and see what happens - sometimes we need to push through and resistance when the resistance is showing up.This episode, allows for listeners to feel safe that there is no shortage of ideas, and being discerning about the ideas you choose to give your energy to, will make the difference in how much joy comes from the work that you do.Episode Highlights08:34 - Karly discusses how her volume of ideas are getting less and less frequent as she becomes less attached to finding “the thing”1034 - The best ideas are the ones that keep haunting you and keep coming back into your mind13:42 - You're not entertaining ideas because you're clear on where you’re going. In this episode, we're featuring the debut album for an often overlooked Mississippi country star, OB McClinton: "OB McClinton Country" (1971). As a black man who sang with shades of Hank Williams, he was dubious of his chances of success in the world of country music, so he turned his prodigious singing and writing talents to R&B music instead. He scored cuts from James Carr, Clarence Carter and Otis Redding before a fortuitous trip to Muscle Shoals found him signed to Enterprise Records (a subsidiary of R&B giant Stax), who were looking to go into country after Charley Pride's proven success. This debut doesn't showcase Obie's writing ability, but rather his vocals - and that Williams twang is in fine form on tracks including the romping "San Bernardino", the cautionary tale of "Bad Guys Don't Always Wear Black Hats" and the statement of fact "Country Music That's My Thing". OB didn't have a long or prosperous career but he garnered respect and admiration from his peers in country music, and we'll explore why on this week's episode.

Today's Guest I'm super excited to introduce today's guest, Yoneco Evans. She's got a great system for helping entrepreneurs get clear on what they want to be known for. This sounds super simple, I know, but are YOU 100% clear on what you want to be known for? And can you communicate that clearly in words that your ideal clients will understand? I think it took me the better part of last year to articulate what My Thing is, so I hope that today's episode will help you either jumpstart the process or refine whatever conclusions you've already reached about what you want to be known for with your business.   About Yoneco Evans Yoneco Evans works with heart-centered, entrepreneurial women who want to build a career and income around teaching and sharing their genius. Her super power is first getting you clear on what you want to be known for and how you want to be known, then creating (and launching) the strategies, signature programs, courses, ebooks, and more, that get you there. In business for herself since 2010, she’s had the privilege of seeing clients go from side hustler to fully self-employed, from struggling wellness coach to sought-after workshop leader, and from casual blogger to twice-published author and paid speaker. Those are the stories that make her cartwheel out of bed each morning. Away from her desk, Yoneco is an INFJ who’s part geek, part clown, and a whole lot of vagabond, gypsy road warrior. She has a thing for Irish accents, loves to bike around her adopted city of Amsterdam, and never says “no” to a spur-of- the moment road trip. Listen to this episode What You’ll Learn Yoneco's top tips on how to get clear on what you want to be known for with your business The three questions you need to ask yourself to start the process How to get to the heart of what you do Why you need to look at the different formats you'll be known for How to get your message out there Inspiring People Tara Gentile Pam Slim Connect with Shannon Website Twitter 5 Tips for Becoming Known Click to Tweet It would make me so happy if you could take a minute and share this with other women entrepreneurs on Twitter. If you enjoy the Ready to Bloom Podcast, please click to tweet: [BMP147] Yoneco Evans ~ How to Get Clear on What You Want to Be Known For http://wp.me/p3507p-3sN #podcast How to Subscribe Click here to subscribe via iTunes Click here to subscribe via RSS Click here to subscribe via Stitcher Help Spread the Word If you enjoyed this episode, please head on over to iTunes and kindly leave us a rating and a review!
