With their third full-length album, 2011's 'The English Riviera', British band Metronomy transitioned from garish electro-pop to a sleek, sophisticated sound that's as much Steely Dan as Daft Punk. Our guest, Scottish singer/songwriter and producer Joshua Mackenzie (The Joshua Hotel, Lional), found inspiration for his own music in leader Joseph Mount's lush-yet-quirky songs about - among other things - his hometown of Torbay in Devon that make up this beguiling record. "You're up, but you'll get down You're never running from this town... This town's the oldest friend of mine" Songs featured in this episode: Corinne (Instrumental) - Metronomy; Repetition Town - The Joshua Hotel; I'm Aquarius, Night Owl - Metronomy; Hey Nineteen - Steely Dan; Indie Rokkers - MGMT; Missing U - Robyn; The English Riviera, We Broke Free - Metronomy; Untitled - Interpol; Everything Goes My Way - Metronomy; She's Bought A Hat Like Princess Marina - The Kinks; The Lost Art Of Keeping A Secret - Queens Of The Stone Age; The Look - Metronomy; F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E - Pulp; She Wants - Metronomy; Don't Get 2 Close (2 My Fantasy) - Ween; Trouble - Metronomy; Ashes To Ashes - David Bowie; Honesty Is No Excuse - Thin Lizzy; Don't Believe A Word - Marco Mendoza w/Josh Mackenzie; The Bay - Metronomy; Atlantis To Interzone - Klaxons; Loving Arm, Corinne - Metronomy; Blockhead - DEVO; Bela Lugosi's Dead - Bauhaus; Some Written - Metronomy; Lot 105 - Blur; Love Underlined - Metronomy; Daft Punk Is Playing At My House - LCD Soundsystem; Somebody New - The Joshua Hotel

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a pair of musicians from the UK who recently collaborated for the first time, Dana Margolin and Joseph Mount. Mount has been the driving force behind Metronomy since 1999, and he's found success not only with a series of winning electro-pop records, but also by remixing tracks for big names like Franz Ferdinand, Gorillaz, and Lady Gaga. If you're unfamiliar with Metronomy, a good place to start is 2008's Nights Out, which is a sort of concept album about, as you might guess, a night out. But Metronomy's catalog is intriguingly all over the map; the band's latest is called Small World, and it features a much gentler side of Mount's songwriting personality overall. It also features a stunning duet with the other side of today's conversation, Dana Margolin of Porridge Radio. Like Metronomy, Porridge Radio really started out as a solo project but grew into more of a band situation—though each is still the brainchild of one person. Margolin started recorded under the Porridge Radio name back in 2015, but it was her second proper studio album, 2020's Every Bad, that really made the world stand up and take notice. It's a powerful, intense record that stands alongside current heatseekers like Dry Cleaning and Wet Leg, but that has a stamina all its own. Margolin is just about to release the follow up to Every Bad, an equally bracing and incredible set of songs called Waterslide, Diving Board, Ladder to the Sky, once again on the Secretly Canadian label. In this conversation, Mount and Margolin talk about their collaboration, about the time that Mount almost but didn't quite catch Margolin performing, and about the importance of lyrics—you'll hear how eczema factors into a new song. They also get to Kierkegaard, Michael Stipe, and Margolin's desire to—but inability—to write a “nice little love song.” Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast and thanks to Dana Margolin and Joseph Mount for chatting. If you like what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcast platform and all social media channels. This episode was produced by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time!

KEXP Live Performances Podcast

Over the past 14 years, Metronomy has released 6 albums that span such a diverse range of genres and sonic textures that it’s tough to pin down exactly how to categorize them. If you must, then you could call them indietronica (or electro-indie, if you prefer). Created and led by English musician Joseph Mount, the band technically includes Oscar Cash, Anna Prior, Olugbenga Adelekan, and Michael Lovett but in its embryonic stage, it's actually a solo project. Delve into why that’s the case and how solitude can be beneficial in this week’s episode of Live on KEXP. “For oft, when on my couch I lie, in vacant or in pensive mood…” Recorded 02/17/2020.

The Cure remind us how beautiful the 80s were. We open and close with the wonderful Metronomy, and we have a classic cover from Seal. Go ahead and subscribe to the show here - thanks. Track Listing The Look MetronomyCrazy Mama JJ CaleClose to Me The CureCome On! Feel the Illinoise! Sufjan StevensLife on Mars SealI Wish I Was the Moon Neko CaseHeartbreaker Metronomy How an Apple G3 computer changed both our lives "Hi Joseph", goes the imagined dialogue in my head. "What colour G3 did you have, because I had them all, including the original grey box geeky outsider office desktop alienator." Ha! I'm sure we'll never meet Joseph Mount whose brainchild is Metronomy but if we did this is my ice breaker for sure. I've got a few years on our Joseph but the Macintosh G3 that his father gave him (or sold him, accounts of this particular exchange differ in urban myth) and introduced him to certainly changed his direction in life… Then I got an old computer off my dad I and started messing around when I was about sixteen or seventeen. I was already an Apple user by then, as a book illustrator and then later page layout for publishing houses across the globe and finally as a designer and production manager with my own printing business. However, my first machine was a IIci. But it seems we both took a leap forward with the G3. It was at this time that Joseph learnt he knew more about melody than he thought and Metronomy was born. An interesting name based quite obviously on the metronome. They have since toured the UK and Europe and supported acts such as Coldplay. We like Metronomy and look forward to further additions to the show as we barrel along the musical highway of life. JJ & Eric As we discussed on the show, JJ Cale was certainly a musician's musician. Countless top class musos covered his work, and this 2006 collaboration with Eric Clapton is no exception. Go take a listen to see how Oklahoma born songster was revered by Clapton, amongst others. Looks like JJ's time in the US military paid off, using the electronics skills he learnt there to build his home recording studio. Although he shunned the limelight in his lifetime, he has certainly contributed greatly to music history. So what did we learn this show? Tobin didn't initially like the Neko Case track, but on further listen his brain kicked in to realise how wonderful her music is!We miss Seal, his take on Life on Mars is a treat.Close to Me by The Cure is still relevant. Check out the bizarre video in this post. Sufjan's the Fifty States gimmick and The Cure riff The title of the album is Come On! Feel the Illinoise!, a play on words of Slade's Cum On Feel the Noize from 1973, and a series of musical journeys based around the US state of Illinois. Clearly, Sufjan has failed in his dream of recording an album for every state in the US, but his two offerings are well worth a listen. However, we did like his reference to the riff from The Cure song that preceded it. It shows The Cure are still relevant today. His first recording in this failed project/publicity stunt is also a rewarding and satisfying listen, and for ease, From the Bottom of the Record Box has added a link right here! BOOM. I have no qualms about admitting it was a promotional gimmick.
