Duas mil pessoas tiveram que ser evacuadas da pequena cidade de East Palestine. Seria só mais um desastre entre tantos que assolam o noticiário, não fosse por uma coincidência: um acidente de trem envolvendo a fumaça de produtos tóxicos é exatamente o mote do livro “Ruído branco”, de Don DeLillo. Esse é apenas um dos exemplos dessa literatura "profética" muito presente no cânone literário ocidental. "Complô contra a América", de Philip Roth, foi lançado em 2004 e mostra como a eleição de um outsider da política pode causar estragos ao país. Mais de dez anos depois, em meio à eleição de Donald Trump, foi apontado como uma espécie de prenúncio da ascensão da extrema-direita no mundo. Michel Houellebecq também viu suas obras anteciparem tragédias coletivas: lançou "Plataforma" na mesma semana dos atentados em Bali e "Submissão" no mesmo período do ataque ao jornal Charlie Hebdo. Thomas Pynchon e Cormac McCarthy são autores que pensam a sociedade estadunidense pelos filtros respectivamente da paranoia e da violência. E Emmanuel Carrère faz uma fascinante mescla de vida real e literatura em suas obras. Neste episódio, a Rádio Companhia recebe os críticos literários e ensaístas Camila Von Holdefer e Felipe Charbel para conversar sobre essa literatura que antecipa e pensa o futuro, além de debater alguns possíveis rumos da ficção contemporânea.

People involved in the arts, literature, or other creative fields are generally politically left wing - even far left. It's much rarer to see someone who is explicitly and openly to the right, though it does happen occasionally.But there's another way to look at it. Our ideas of left and right in politics descend from the French Revolution. But what if we defined them differently than we currently do?My preferred definition of the right, properly understood, is discerning and aligning oneself and the world around him with the truth. Thus, because great art often expresses Truth, that art is implicitly right wing regardless of the politics of its creator. The best art, journalism, etc. often overflows the intentions of its creator.But many of those who have the greatest insights about today's world are not Christian at all. Sometimes this makes their work offensive to American Christian readers. But those who pay careful attention will often find incredible truth, particularly about the deformed nature of contemporary society, hiding in plain sight. Today I want to give some examples of this in the form of three contemporary European literary figures: Hanne Orstavik, Karl Ove Knausgaard, and Michel Houellebecq.

Hi, I'm Christy Shriver and we're here to discuss books that have changed the world and have changed us. I'm Garry Shriver, and this is the How to Love Lit Podcast. Today we conclude our four-part series on Aldous Huxley's Brave New World; the world Huxley creates may be New but certainly it is not brave. Michel Houellebecq in his 1998 novel The Elementary Particles references Brave New World in an unusual way. Instead of seeing it as a warning of an evil to be avoided, he, or at least his characters find it a world to aspire to. Let me quote him, “everyone says BNW is supposed to be a totalitarian nightmare, a vicious indictment on our society, but that's just hypocritical bullshit. BNW is our idea of heaven: genetic manipulation, sexual liberation, the war against aging, the leisure society.” It's a conversation, Huxley thought we should have as a society: what constitutes a real human world? What is human society? Are we individuals living together; or are cells in a single organism called society with a small collection of men as braintrusts running it all? In BNW Revisited, he says this, “In spite of the Id and the Unconscious, in spite of endemic neurosis and the prevalence of low IQ's most men and women are probably decent enough and sensible enough to be trusted with the direction of their own destinies. “ The World Controllers in BNW disagree., Mond, in part 4, describes a world where men and women are NOT to be trusted with the direction of their own destinies. And as we reach the end of the book, we listen to Mustafa Mond explain why. And in a nutshell the answer is instability. “Independence was not made for man. God isn't compatible with machinery and scientific medicine and universal happiness. “It would upset the whole social order if men started doing things on their own.” These are the arguments we read at the end of the book, but their meanings are illustrated throughout starting in chapter one. After reading the dialogue between John and Mond, so much of what we've seen illustrated makes more sense. Really, this is a book that needs to be read twice because when you read those first chapters, you're overwhelmed and confused. In episode 1, we tour with our omniscient narrator that Central London Hatchery and Conditioning Center in the year of stability AF 632. We learn that vivaparous reproduction (or birth as we know it) has been replaced by the assembly line; babies are manufactured in bottles. The director explains to us that world is divided into castes, and everyone is conditioned to believe they are equal and equally valuable- albeit, they certainly are not equal in the way we think of equality today. We are introduced to a new set of values and the value that prevails is happiness. The World State has solved man's happiness problem, and we are shown how this is achieved. The way the director describes makes it seem flawless. Caitrin Nicol in her famous essay “Brave New World at 75” describes it a different way, “there is an unholy alliance of industrial capitalist, fascist, communist, psycho- analytic, and pseudo-scientific ideologies has brought about the end of history. The past is taboo - "History is bunk," as "Our Ford" so eloquently said - and there is no future, because history's ends have been accomplished. There is no pain, deformity, crime, anguish, or social discontent. Even death has no more sting: Children are acclimatized to the death palaces from the age of eighteen months, encouraged to poke around and eat chocolate creams while the dying are ushered into oblivion on soma, watching sports and pornography on television.” Hosted on Acast. Sus novelas Las partículas elementales y Plataforma se convirtieron en hitos de la nueva narrativa francesa de finales del siglo XX y comienzos del XXI . Ambas le otorgaron cierta consideración literaria pero también dieron lugar al llamado «fenómeno Houellebecq», que provocó numerosos y apasionados debates en la prensa internacional. Los escritores de literatura fantástica son, por regla general, reaccionarios, por la sencilla razón de que son especiales, podríamos decir profesionalmente conscientes de la existencia del Mal. Resulta bastante curioso que, de entre los discípulos de Lovecraft, ninguno haya sentido el impacto de este simple hecho: que la evolución del mundo moderno ha conseguido que las fobias lovecraftianas estén todavía más presentes, todavía más vivas . El universo, que intelectualmente él concibe como indiferente, se vuelve estéticamente hostil. Su propia existencia, que podría haber sido tan sólo una serie de triviales desengaños, se convierte en una operación quirúrgica y una celebración invertida, especular. Su obra de madurez siguió siendo fiel a la postración física de su juventud, transfigurándola. Ahí radica el secreto profundo del genio de Lovecraft, ahí nace el límpido manantial de su poesía: logró transformar su asco por la vida en una hostilidad activa . Ofrecer una alternativa a la vida en todas sus facetas, constituir una oposición permanente, un recurso permanente a la vida: tal es la misión más elevada del poeta en esta tierra. Y así es; empezamos a otorgarle su verdadero lugar, igual o superior al de Edgar Poe; en cualquier caso, decididamente único. Lovecraft tuvo a veces la sensación, ante el repetido fracaso de su producción literaria, de que a fin de cuentas el sacrificio de su vida había sido inútil. Hoy podemos juzgarlo de otro modo; nosotros, para quienes él ha llegado a ser un iniciador esencial a un universo diferente , situado mucho más allá de los límites de la experiencia humana, y no obstante de un impacto emocional terriblemente preciso. Este hombre que no consiguió vivir consiguió, finalmente, escribir. Le costó lo suyo. Le llevó años. Nueva York lo ayudó. Él, que era tan amable, tan cortés, descubrió allí el odio. De regreso en Providence escribió relatos magníficos, vibrantes como un conjuro, precisos como una disección. La estructura dramática de los «grandes textos» es de una riqueza impresionante; los recursos narrativos son hábiles, nuevos, audaces; pero tal vez nada de todo eso bastaría si no intuyésemos, en mitad del conjunto, la presión de una fuerza interior devoradora. Toda gran pasión, ya se trate de amor o de odio, termina produciendo una obra auténtica. Podemos lamentarlo, pero hay que reconocerlo: Lovecraft se sitúa más bien del lado del odio; del odio y del miedo. El universo, que intelectualmente él concibe como indiferente, se vuelve estéticamente hostil. Su propia existencia, que podría haber sido tan sólo una serie de triviales desengaños, se convierte en una operación quirúrgica y una celebración invertida, especular. Su obra de madurez siguió siendo fiel a la postración física de su juventud, transfigurándola. Ahí radica el secreto profundo del genio de Lovecraft, ahí nace el límpido manantial de su poesía: logró transformar su asco por la vida en una hostilidad activa . Ofrecer una alternativa a la vida en todas sus facetas, constituir una oposición permanente, un recurso permanente a la vida: tal es la misión más elevada del poeta en esta tierra. When it comes to the enormous reduction of income inequality during the 20th century, Thomas Piketty sees politics everywhere. In his new book, A Brief History of Equality, he argues the rising equality during the 19th and 20th centuries has its roots not in deterministic economic forces but in the movements to end aristocratic and colonial societies starting at the end of the 18th century. Drawing this line forward, Piketty also contends we must rectify past injustices before attempting to create new institutions. He joined Tyler to discuss just how egalitarian France actually is, the beginning of the end of aristocratic society, where he places himself within French intellectual history, why he's skeptical of data from before the late 18th century, how public education drives economic development, why Georgism isn't sufficient to address wealth inequality, the relationship between wealth and cultural capital, his proposal for a minimum inheritance, why he turned down the Legion of Honor, why France should give reparations to Haiti despite the logistical difficulties of doing so, his vision for European federalism, why more immigration won't be a panacea for inequality, his thoughts on Michel Houellebecq's Submission, and more.
