THE BEATLES – A HARD DAY'S NIGHT with special guests Peter Mills & James McGrath. This interview took place before and after we listened to the vinyl album. Considering the quality of the original material on 'With the Beatles,' it shouldn't have been a surprise that Lennon & McCartney decided to devote their third album to all-original material. Nevertheless, that decision still impresses, not only because the album is so strong, but because it was written and recorded at a time when the Beatles were constantly touring, giving regular BBC concerts, appearing on television and releasing non-LP singles and EPs, as well as filming their first motion picture. In that context, the achievement of 'A Hard Day's Night' is all the more astounding. Not only was the record the de facto soundtrack for their movie, not only was it filled with nothing but Lennon-McCartney originals, but it found the Beatles truly coming into their own as a band by performing a uniformly excellent set of songs. Peter Mills and James McGrath teach in the School of Cultural Studies and Humanities at Leeds Beckett University. They have been friends and colleagues for many years, and Peter supervised James's PhD on the music of Lennon & McCartney. So it seems only right that they have co-edited a book of 14 brand new essays on The Beatles, entitled 'The Beatles in Perspective: A Carnival of Light', published by Equinox Books in 2023. They chose 1964's 'A Hard Day's Night' album as their CAT Club subject. CAT Club stalwart, Ian Clayton was in the interviewer's chair. Happy Trails. VAN MORRISON – MOONDANCE with special guest Peter Mills. This interview took place before and after we listened to the vinyl album. The yang to Astral Weeks' yin, the brilliant Moondance is every bit as much a classic as its predecessor; Van Morrison's first commercially successful solo effort, it retains the previous album's deeply spiritual thrust but transcends its bleak, cathartic intensity to instead explore themes of renewal and redemption. Light, soulful, and jazzy, Moondance opens with the sweetly nostalgic "And It Stoned Me," the song's pastoral imagery establishing the dominant lyrical motif recurring throughout the album – virtually every track exults in natural wonder, whether it's the nocturnal magic celebrated by the title cut or the unlimited promise offered in "Brand New Day." At the heart of the record is "Caravan," an incantatory ode to the power of radio; equally stirring is the majestic "Into the Mystic," a song of such elemental beauty and grace as to stand as arguably the quintessential Morrison moment. (Allmusic) With special guest PETER MILLS. Peter Mills Is the Senior Lecturer in Media & Popular Culture at Leeds Beckett University. his acclaimed book, Hymns To The Silence, looks into the work of Van Morrison in a detailed & fascinating investigative study. In the interviewer's chair was IAN CLAYTON. This event took place on 26th January 2023 in the Pigeon Loft at The Robin Hood, Pontefract, West Yorkshire. The Taliban takeover of Afghanistan has started a new phase in the war against the Islamic State. Islamic State Khorasan Province (IS-KP) is the local Afghan branch of Islamic State, which fought first the US-backed Afghan government and has continued to fight against the new Taliban government in the hope of creating a hardline Islamic caliphate. IS-KP has targeted Taliban fighters and officials, attacked economic infrastructure to prevent the government from providing services to the populace, and attempted to provoke a sectarian conflict by attacking religious minorities. On this episode of Overwatch, Afghanistan researcher Peter Mills discusses the origins, goals, numbers, and tactics of IS-KP, as well as their threat level to both Afghanistan and the US.

In a world of theatre based on movies and television shows, why not Shakespeare? Such is Illyria, a musical adaptation of Twelfth Night first produced Off-Broadway in 2002 and now running at Santa Rosa’s 6th Street Playhouse. Don’t let the words ‘Shakespeare’ and ‘musical’ chase you away. Peter Mills has written a book and score that takes the plotline of the Bard’s 17th century comedy, modernizes it a bit in speech and time period, sets it to music and comes up with a terrifically entertaining piece of theatre. Shakespeare’s tale involves shipwrecked and separated twins Viola and Sebastian (played by Carmen Mitchell and Lorenzo Alviso), Duke Orsino, the lovelorn leader of the isle of Illyria (played by Burton Thomas), and Olivia, the in-mourning object of his affection (as played by Tracy Hinman.) There’s also Andrew Aguecheek, a silly suitor for Olivia’s hand, Sir Toby Belch, Olivia’s soused uncle, Malvolio, a stuffed-shirt steward, Maria, a servant with eyes on Sir Toby, and Feste, a fool who narrates the tale. Impersonation, mistaken identity, gender confusion, and trickery all come into play before things get sorted out and everyone ends up with his or her intended. Well, most everyone. To fully enjoy this production, more than the usual suspension of belief is required in a couple of areas. One must accept Ms. Mitchell being regularly mistaken for a male and Ms. Hinman is a more mature Olivia than one usually sees in the role, but just go with it. Mills’s 20+ songs vary in style from a lilting ballad (the beautiful “Save One”) to English Musical Hall numbers like the hilarious “Cakes and Ale”. Musical director Lucas Sherman has a six-piece band delivering the beguiling score flawlessly while director Craig Miller’s cast brings superb vocal talents to bear. As strong a group of voices I’ve heard on a North Bay stage, this may be the best sounding musical 6th Street has produced. It’s gratifying that the characterizations provided by the performers match their vocal quality. Mitchell charms as the gender-bending Viola and is matched by Burton’s flustered Orsino. Orsino’s musical confession of love to Alviso’s Sebastian (whom Viola was impersonating) shows Shakespeare was a couple of centuries ahead of society when it came to same-sex relationships. Ample comedic support is provided by Seth Dahlgren as Toby Belch, Larry Williams as Malvolio, and Stephen Kanaski as the foppish Sir Andrew Aguecheek. Tim Setzer’s clowning and dancing as Feste was rakishly amusing. Craig Miller ends his tenure at 6th Street Playhouse on a high note with this delightful production. 'Illyria' runs Friday through Sunday through July 8 at 6th Street Playhouse in Santa Rosa; Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30pm; there are Saturday & Sunday matinees are at 2pm. Today's Guest: Today’s Guest: Peter Mills, author, "The Monkees, Head, and the 60s" Watch this exclusive Mr. Media interview with PETER MILLS by clicking on the video player above! Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience full of teenyboppers daydreaming of meeting Davy Jones in the next life… in the NEW new media capital of the world… St. Petersburg, Florida! The Monkees, Head, and the 60s by Peter Mills. Order your copy today by clicking on the book cover above! There are some truly horrific movies in the history of cinema. I didn’t realize until yesterday that one of them starred The Monkees – Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz, Peter Tork and Mike Nesmith. Head, a 1968 theatrical release starring the pre-fab foursome, represents 85 minutes of my life I will never get back again. PETER MILLS podcast excerpt: "Even bvefore I started writing the book, I must have seen the film 25 times. Don't (form an opinion) on watching it one time!" What astonishes me is that anyone – not even Jack Nicholson, one of the writers responsible for this legendary atrocity — could make the super-charismatic band so uninteresting. I avoided watching Head for almost 50 years, but finally broke down and watched it — for free, fortunately, on YouTube — because I wanted to understand what drove British music journalist Peter Mills to write an entire book about the band and the movie. In The Monkees, Head, and the 60s, Mills dissects the band, the film and its soundtrack, adding deep cuts of history to the misbegotten cinematic dud. I am old enough to have watched and adored “The Monkees” in its original 1966-68 run on NBC. I still have my original Monkees albums – even the one my baby brother took a bite out of. I even interviewed Micky Dolenz for a newspaper back in 1984, a career highlight for me. But after this interview, I’m going to try to focus my memories on the TV series and forget I ever saw Head. PETER MILLS podcast excerpt: "Usually, my students at Leeds Beckett University don't know who The Monkees are, but every year, there are maybe one or two kids who are already experts on them. A few weeks ago I said Television was the best band to come out of the New York punk scene. A kid came up after class and said, 'No, I think that Modern Lovers are better.'" Key interview moments: • 3:15 Peter Mills, author of The Monkees, Head, and the 60s, talks about how he first discovered the lost film Head by TV's The Monkees; • 16:45 If you've only seen Head once and didn't like it, Mills urges you to take another look. And another. And another; • 28:00 As a teacher of millennials at London's Leeds Beckett University, Mills doesn't expects his students to know The Monkees, but a few each term always surprise him. The world of security is vast, and concerns are great. For some, the thoughts of what to protect and how to protect it are enough to keep them awake at night. What opportunities and concerns are up high and down low? To help shine a light, five ILTA members from the LegalSEC Council and ILTACON conference committee have shared some of their security concerns. Read the article that summarizes all five perspectives in the Winter 2015 Peer to Peer. Here is our interview with Peter Mills, Director Information Technology at Fasken Martineau Dumoulin LLP:
Health risk assessments form the backbone of many wellness programs. Their aim? Provide employers with meaningful data for designing and evaluating wellness programs and provide employees with meaningful data for assessing and tackling individual health risk. The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation reports in its 2014 Employee Health Benefits Survey that 33% of firms (small and large) offer employees the opportunity to complete an assessment. More than half of these firms offer enticements to boost employees' completion rate, including financial incentives. A much smaller percentage makes completion of an assessment a requirement for benefits enrollment or the lack of participation in a wellness program a penalizable offense when an assessment identifies health risks. The questions these assessments ask and their voluntary nature when incentives and penalties are used has raised questions within the EEOC, resulting in a number of suits. This show delves into the intent and value of health risk assessments with guest Dr. Peter Mills, co-founder of nGage Health, an organization specifically focused on creating patient engagement and health management solutions for healthcare providers in order to help them address the new challenges brought by health care reform. Peter was a founding team member at global health management consultancy vielife, acquired by CIGNA in 2006. He has also worked extensively with Minneapolis-based RedBrick Health, helping create some of their market-leading health management solutions.
