Madison authors, topics, book events and publishers Stu Levitan welcomes NY Times best-selling author Jennifer Chiaverini, here to discuss her latest novel of historical fiction, The Women's March, about the historic 1913 Woman Suffrage Procession. It is just out from the good people at William Morrow, and imprint of HarperCollins. Although Jennifer technically lives in Middleton, she identifies as a Madison author, so that's good enough for Stu. On March 3, 1913, the National American Woman Suffrage Association held the first large political protest march in the history of Washington DC. Its purpose was to press its demand for a constitutional amendment to enfranchise women. March organizer Alice Paul chose the date and location very well – down Pennsylvania Avenue, the day before the inauguration of Woodrow Wilson – the last president to be elected before universal suffrage. And what a march it was to be, with floats and chariots and thousands of women in color-coded outfits, all led by a herald on a white horse, culminating in a tableau of historical allegory at the Treasury Building. Among the several thousand women there that day, the legendary Black journalist and activist Ida B Wells-Barnett and a militant suffragist librarian named Maud Malone. Alas, things did not work out as planned, as hecklers and hooligans broke through the inadequate security to abuse, even assault the women. But the arc of the moral universe does bend towards justice, albeit slowly at times, and the constitutional amendment they demanded in 1913 was finally passed by Congress in 1919 ratified by the states in 1920. Wisconsin, by the way, has pride of place as the first state to file its ratification vote with the Secretary of State. How Alice Paul, Ida B Wells-Barnett and Maud Malone came to be on Pennsylvania Avenue that day – the battles they fought, the choices they made – is what occupies Jennifer Chiaverini in this moving and insightful account of an event which has perhaps faded in memory but not in importance. It is a story Jennifer Chiaverini is exceptionally well-qualified to tell, as a very successful author of historical fiction. In addition to the 20 novels in the Elm Creek Quilts series, set mainly in the Civil War era, she has written historical novels starring the martyred UW student-turned Nazi resistance fighter Mildred Fish Harnack, Lord Byron's brilliant daughter Ada Byron King, Mary Todd Lincoln, Julia Grant and others. It is a real pleasure to welcome to Madison BookBeat Jennifer Chiaverini.

There is never a time where there is not a line at Bertha’s Kitchen in North Charleston, SC. That means that you’ll have plenty of time to decide what all you want for your meal (hint: you want lima beans), and you’ll also have time to read the mentions in Southern Living and Garden and Gun hanging on the wall. Owners Julia Grant, Linda Pinckney, and Sharon Coakley cook just like their mother, Bertha, taught them to, and that line from doors open to close existed long before the 2017 James Beard Foundation America Classic Award. Still, the award illustrates what locals have known for a long time: this is the place to get fed. And by fed, I mean much more than just the food on your tray. Bertha’s is the place to go when you need to know that some things, like red rice and green beans, don’t need an update, that no matter what kind of day you had, the fried chicken will be fresh for you until the doors close, that you’ll have a hefty dose of love and an occasional “baby” and “how you been” when you get to the front of the line. Bertha’s is what home tastes like, and these ladies know it. This restaurant is my comfort spot, which I admit here, along with the fact that I like sugar in my cornbread. Synopsis A psychological legal crime thriller A lawyer, a murderer and a policeman – caught in a tangled web of love, loss, terror and intrigue in this driving psychological thriller.  When criminal lawyer Julia Grant interviews Sam Smith who has been charged with a vicious murder, she feels a strange connection to him.  Has she met him before? Does he hold a key to her lost childhood memories?  He feels a connection too. 'Julia, you are the only one who can help me,' he pleads.  Is it the same connection? Does he know something she cannot recall?  When he is duly convicted despite her best efforts, he suddenly turns on her in the courtroom and threatens that one day he will make sure to wreak his revenge on her.  But why?  What has she ever done to him? From the best-selling author of Golden Sapphire Excerpt The door to the jury room swung open. The seven men and five women filed in and took their seats. Julia glanced at the dock. Perched behind the thick protective glass Sam Smith looked immaculate in a fresh white shirt, the blond beard newly trimmed, nothing moving except those marble blue eyes.  She saw Paul come in through the swing doors. He sat down in the seats reserved for the police, glanced at her and smiled ─ a slow half smile and a slightly raised eyebrow, as if to say that for only one of them would today's outcome be successful.   She tucked a wayward strand of hair behind her ear and smiled back. Defence versus Prosecution. Part of the day's work. Only this time the stakes were higher than usual.   Sam Smith was also watching her, his face so alien it was hard to imagine how the thoughts that had haunted her in the eight months she’d been preparing his defence had ever entered her mind. Even a hardened criminal like Smith must surely feel some trepidation now. But there was nothing. Not even a flicker to show he registered one iota of emotion.  The Clerk of the Court rose to his feet. ‘Will the court please stand.’  The door opened. Mr Justice Steel strode to his red leather chair, scarlet and ermine robes flowing, wig well down his forehead. He nodded to the crowded court and sat down.  Julia pressed her shoulders against the back of the bench. Another five minutes and it would all be over. And what then? He might be free, but would she ever be? The Clerk of the Court cleared his throat. ‘Will the foreman of the jury please stand.’ He looked directly at the foreman. ‘Have you reached a verdict upon which all of you are agreed?’ ‘Yes,’ the foreman said. Julia looked straight ahead. Remembering what Ben had told her this morning she cringed with embarrassment. ‘You’re the best young criminal lawyer in Manchester and you’d better make sure you uphold your reputation and that of our partnership,’ he’d said as she left for the court. Huh. A fat lot of good her reputation was doing her now. Something made her look at Smith again as if he’d called her name out loud. Clearly he’d been waiting for her to look at him, knowing that
