This week, after five years of research, two newly discovered antiviral molecules have been shown to combat coronaviruses. Johan Neyts of the Rega Institute for Medical Research in Leuven outlines how he hopes the new molecule developed by his team might help us deal with emerging pandemics in the future. But as the US halts all Covid related research, will drugs like these ever hit the shelves? Among the grants terminated this week by the National Institute for Health is a programme called AViDD, AntiViral Drug Discovery, supporting 9 independent consortia. Annette von Delft of Oxford University and Ed Griffen of the drugs discovery company MedChemica spoke to us about the overnight shut down of years of work and importance of antiviral development. The longest ever carbon-based molecules have been discovered by the Mars Curiosity rover. Caroline Freissinet of the Laboratoire Atmosphères et Observations Spatiales talked us through the meticulous planning and geological chance that made this possible, and whether these long chain alkanes could be a clue to discovering life on mars. Researchers at Vanderbilt University have been delving into the genetic evolution of horses to discover the mutation that's behind their runaway metabolic success. Gianni Castiglione explains how a mutation that should have been catastrophic instead helped horses to evolve from the size of dogs to the giant athletic animals we know today. I just finished up Empire of the Summer Moon by SC Gwynne, a book describing the Comanche, the fiercest warrior tribe of the plains. Loved this book!! In this episode, I cover how the horse transformed Comanche from the 98 pound weakling to the strongest, most militaristic tribe of the Southwest. I also describe their diet, their horsemanship and the what made them such compelling warriors. We also discuss a little US Grant, and I offer a travel tip on the Comanches' last redoubt, the Palo Duro Canyon in Northern Texas.

This is my last episode on the late great Vince Lombardi, and David Maraniss' awesome book on his amazing purpose driven life. In this episode, I riff on the gap, that is the where you are and where you could be given your existing talent, resources, and opportunities. So many of us get in our own way, blocking the best version of ourselves. We'll discuss Angus MacGyver and opportunities, things that block the and unlock the gap, the best version of ourselves. How do we get to the other side? What prevents us from getting there? Lombardi took a team, bordering on the verge collapse, and transformed it into a champion within three years. He had the same resources, location, and even many of the same players that the previous coach, Scooter Maclean had, but like US Grant before him, rather than lamenting what he didn't have, Lombardi focused on what he did have, taking the Packers across the gap from oblivion to legend. We'll discuss his stump speech after he won, my favorite Lombardi quote, and some of the principles behind Lombardi's success. Given where you are, are you using the most of what you've been given? If not, I hope you'll join me on this journey as to discuss how to cross the gap from where are to where we should be, the best version of ourselves. Major gratitude to David Maraniss for writing this book and to Vince for showing us how to become the best version of ourselves. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rockne-cole/support

The breaking of the 1868 Fort Laramie Treaty and the creation of several smaller reservations in western South Dakota is often thought to have been President Ulysses Grant's intent. However, historian Mary Stockwell argues in her book that Grant attempted to pursue a different policy, which included citizenship for American Indians. But despite his wishes, he was unable to make that happen. Understanding his circumstances is key to understanding a great deal of South Dakota's history. This podcast was recorded on February 12, 2022, Abe Lincoln's birthday. Why do we all love Lincoln so much? What made him our number 1 president? Through the lens of his Second Inaugural speech, we explore what made Lincoln so... fricking... awesome. We see two characteristics that are rarely possessed in one person: absolute, stone cold toughness in battle, coupled with total forgiveness after the battle was over. He was a nice guy, tough guy. In this speech given just weeks before he died, he essentially gave an ultimatum to the South: Option 1 - Keep fighting, and you will be crushed. All chips in. All in. No compromise on the question of slavery. You're going down. In his beautiful words: "Yet, if God wills that it continue, until all the wealth piled by the bond-man's two hundred and fifty years of unrequited toil shall be sunk, and until every drop of blood drawn with the lash, shall be paid by another drawn with the sword." Get chills reading that with Lincoln pressaging Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction, going all Old Testament on the South. Option 2 - Lay down your arms. Recognize federal sovereignty. Accept that slavery will be abolished. And you will be forgiven, allowed to return home, and welcomed back. "With malice toward none, with charity for all..." This was a hella fun episode to do. I am going to do a second one on the Gettysburg Address for Part 2. Like US Grant, I have Mega Man Crush on Abe Lincoln. I actually like US Grant better, but along with MLK, and US Grant, they are easily top 3 for me in terms of my favorite American Heroes. This is the follow up to my recent podcast on Lincoln's favorite poem, "Oh why should the mortals by proud" by William Knox. Zachary Taylor, our Nation's 11th president, died on July 9, 1850, only one year and four months into his presidency. I came across this eulogy while reading Lincoln's Speeches and Writings. I learned that Lincoln absolutely adored Zachary Taylor and strongly supported him, campaigning vigorously for him in Taylor's run for president. My mancrush, US Grant, also loved Taylor too. This got me interested in Taylor and the following paradox: why did two men most responsible for the destruction of slavery, Abe and US, embrace a slaving holding Southern president? Whoa, I don't know whether I answered that question in this podcast, but I tried to exploring what made Taylor so compelling to both Grant and Lincoln. In his encomium to Taylor, Lincoln's admiration of Taylor's leadership qualities demonstrates what he liked, what drove him, and what made him great. So if nothing else, regardless of whether I rescued Taylor from the ignominy of slavery, I hope you share my view that we must not ignore, but explore the dark side to our human character, and our infinite capacity to be renewed through the eternal waters of forgiveness. Taylor, the slaver holder, inspired the two men who crushed slavery, perhaps, equivalent to Saul becoming Paul. Creation and history work in mysterious ways. This was a fun one. Keep living inspired and productive lives. Be you. Do you. Live your life's purpose. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

In this episode, we cover Abe Lincoln's favorite poem, "Oh, why should the spirit of mortal be proud" by William Knox. I learned about this poem while reading Lincoln's eulogy of our nation's 11th president, Zachary Taylor, which he gave at the Chicago City Hall on July 9, 1850. I am going to do a separate podcast on the eulogy, in part, because he so eloquently covers Taylor's leadership qualities. Taylor is interesting to me because both Lincoln and my man-crush, US Grant, greatly admired Taylor, "Old Rough and Ready." That cast will have to wait because of awesomeness of this poem, which Lincoln recited from memory at the end of the eulogy. He referred to it throughout his life in private, but only referred used it once in a public address at Taylor's eulogy. Lincoln loved it so much that he also shared it with his first love Ann Rutledge. He apparently quoted it so much that Rutledge's sister called it "Lincoln's Song". We cover death, love, life, and of course, exuberant stoicism. Carpe diem. Whoa, I loved doing this podcast. GRANT, THE FRAGILE UNION AND THE CRISIS OF 1876From Bret Baier, New York Times bestselling author, award-winning chief political anchor for Fox News Channel, and the anchor and executive editor of Special Report with Bret Baier, comes TO RESCUE THE REPUBLIC: Ulysses S. Grant, the Fragile Union, and the Crisis of 1876 (Custom House; Hardcover; $28.99; on sale October 12, 2021), a riveting and timely reassessment of Ulysses S. Grant. This first installment in Baier's new book series illuminates the life and legacy of one of America's most consequential yet misunderstood leaders, Ulysses S. Grant, whose actions both as general and as president played an unparalleled role in preserving the United States.Published against the backdrop of our own time's extreme political division and recent contested election, Baier's meticulously researched narrative could not be more relevant. While Grant's military genius during the Civil War is rightly celebrated, it has overshadowed our appreciation of his remarkable political leadership as president during the Reconstruction Era. Baier argues that Grant's two terms in the White House were equally consequential, notably his commitment to protecting the rights of African Americans and suppressing the Ku Klux Klan. All the while, Grant sought to all hold together the fragile Union-a mission that would be tested by a crisis that consumed his last days in office, one that threated to plunge the nation back into civil war.Born a tanner's son in rugged Ohio in 1822 and battle-tested by the Mexican American War, Grant met his destiny on the bloody fields of the Civil War. His daring and resolve as a general gained the attention of President Lincoln who appointed Grant as Lieutenant General of the Union Army in March 1864. Within a year, Grant's forces had seized Richmond and forced Robert E. Lee to surrender. Four years later, the reunified nation faced another leadership void when, following Lincoln's assassination, an unworthy successor completed his term. Again Grant answered the call. At stake once more was the future of the Union, for though the Southern states had been defeated, it remained to be seen if the former Confederacy could be reintegrated into the country-and if the Union could ensure the rights and welfare of African Americans in the South. Grant met the challenge by boldly advancing an agenda of Reconstruction. In his final weeks in the White House, however, Grant faced a crisis that threatened to undo his life's work. The contested presidential election of 1876 produced no clear victory for either Republican Rutherford B. Hayes or Democrat Samuel Tilden, who carried most of the former Confederacy. Soon Southern states vowed to revolt if Tilden was not declared the victor. Grant was determined to use his influence to conserve the Union, establishing an electoral commission to peaceably settle the issue. Grant brokered a grand bargain: the installation of Republican Hayes to the presidency, with concessions to the Democrats that effectively ended Reconstruction. This painful, though perhaps necessary compromise saved the Union, but the consequences of Reconstruction's roll-back stills haunt the country.Deep with contemporary resonance and brimming with fresh detail, TO RESCUE THE REPUBLIC reveals Grant, for all his complexity, to be among the first rank of American heroes.PRISE FOR TO RESCUE THE REPUBLIC"With To Rescue The Republic, Bret Baier, the nation's leading reporter of history, has written a veritable tour de force. This remarkable book is history as it should be: magnificently composed, meticulously researched, and brimming with lessons for today's divided political arena. Baier has brought to life the riveting but too often forgotten story of how US Grant preserved the Republic at one of its moments of greatest peril. This is not just a tale for our age, but an absorbing tale for the ages. It belongs on the bookshelf of every lover of history."- Jay Winik, New York Times bestselling author of April 1865 and 1944"Bret Baier's To Rescue the Republic is narrative history at its absolute finest. With great verve and a fair-and-balanced ethic, Baier brilliantly recounts the heroic life of Ulysses S. Grant - as Civil War general, U.S. President, Reconstruction Era leader and beloved national icon. His dramatic retelling of the election of 1876 which pitted Samuel J Tilden against Rutherford B. Hayes is stupendous. A fast-paced, thrilling and enormously important book. Highly recommended!"- Douglas Brinkley, the Katherine Tsanoff Brown Chair in Humanities and Professor of History at Rice University and author of American Moonshot

in this episode, I cover the last year of US Grant's life. To me, his last year was one of the heroic chapters in his inspiring life. Faced with terminal throat cancer, and financially destitute, Grant spent his his hours writing his memoir so that he could leave a financial legacy to his wife and family. That last year truly demonstrated his character and qualities that made him such a central figure in our Nation's history. His last year is one of many reasons why I have such a man crush on US Grant. Listen more to see why. Also, check out the most excellent biography of US Grant: Grant by Jean Edward Smith. It's by far one of the best biographies on Grant. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

There is an old saw that goes, “A hard case makes for bad law.” In simple English, it means that you shouldn’t let your passions get the better of you and pass laws that seem like they make sense today without fully considering the effect of those laws in or even on the future. Now, the Constitution being the Supreme Law, we have to consider one peculiar section that has remained, like a vestigial tail, since 1869, when it was ratified as Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. It was almost entirely the work of one man, who believed that a hard law was needed. He pushed for Section 3’s inclusion as he wrote it. Then, within two years, he died. Within a few short years, so did application of Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. By 1898 is was as utterly dead as Senator Howard had become in 1871… at least until this past week, when some intentionally ignorant politicians tried to convince the public that they could revive it…

One of saddest moments of American History is the Hayes-Tilden Compromise of 1877. In that Compromise, Southern Democrats agreed to accept Rutherford Hayes as President in exchange for Republicans agreeing to withdraw troops from the South. US Grant historian, Jean Edward Smith described the Compromise this way: "The rights of African Americans were sacrificed at the altar of national reconciliation." We are still reaping the bitter fruit from that backroom deal. In this Episode, I explore the events leading up to that Compromise, why it happened, and why we still feel its effects even today. I also discuss some possible solutions to finally address the failures of Reconstruction: reparations and reconciliation. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

By the late 1870s, the new government faced enormous financial pressures. It dealt with yen depreciation and price inflation. The former Samurais suffered greatly because of the conditions. For that, and other reasons, some of them revolted in early 1877. This caused the Seinan or Samurai War. The Meiji Emperor was able to defeat the former Samurais after eight months. The Ryukyu Island nation status had long been ambiguous. Both Japan and China had claims to some or all of the islands. This was finally decided in Japan's favor in 1879. In a limited capacity, the decision involved an attempted mediation by former United States President US Grant. The Korea issue was finally decided in the Treaty of Kanghwa (or Ganghwa) (1876) with Japan. Not without, however, further damage to the relations between Japan and China.

Today's guest is arguably the finest living historian of the American Experience. He has written 30 books or so—all exceedingly well written, crisp, and engaging. Some of those books include: outstanding bios of Ben Franklin, US Grant, Ronald Reagan, FDR and TR, a great book about the California Gold Rush (The Age of Gold), as well as other period books about significant eras of US history (like the Cold War). Most great historians tend to specialize in a single period or topical domain. Prof Brands specializes in everything in American history, it seems. He is the Jack S. Blanton Sr. Chair in History at the U of Texas. Hook ‘em.His latest book is a compelling case study, if you will, on two men's reaction to the problem of slavery as America stumbled toward the Civil War. It asks the question, one central to many historical moments—not just slavery: “How does a good man challenge a great evil?” The men, John Brown and Abraham Lincoln. The book, and a fine one, indeed: The Zealot and the Emancipator: John Brown and Abraham Lincoln and the Struggle for Freedom. To live my best version, I have tapped into blinkist.com. A civil war cracked off in the New World that would last four years and rip the Republic asunder. For more than 1400 days, brother fought brother, father killed son, friend cut down friend. Not for a minute did the suffering stop, whether for the soldiers or the noncombatants. Disease, privation, hunger, petty violence, rape, and pillage roamed the land from the swamps of S.C. to the P.A. forests. From the Mississippi to the Mountains of Appalachia, 10k and more battles were fought of every size, from glorified bar brawls to clashes of cataclysmic scale. By its end, over a million lives had been snuffed out and millions more ruined. The butcher's bill on both sides included lowly privates and brilliant generals, statesmen and lawmakers, farmers, women, shopkeepers, teachers, children, slaves, a president, and everyone in between. "In every battle, there comes a time when both sides consider themselves beaten, then he who continues the attack wins." - Grant's statement is not just a bit of battlefield wisdom. He could just as readily have been describing North and South in the lead up to the American Civil War. Or throughout the War itself. Or any of the thousands of battles that took place during the War. Lincoln, self admittedly no military man, understood the dogged nature needed to win the drag em out drop em down type contest that this War was going to become. "Our success or failure at Donelson is vastly important and I beg you to put your soul in the effort" he wrote to his Western commander. Finding the type of man that would attack even after he thought he'd already lost proved difficult, but not impossible. It was on the rivers of the Western theater that the War would shift for good. Where the man and the mind Lincoln and the Union most needed would mature into a singular force. Let's go back to February 1862, to the winding calm of the Cumberland River. New bizarrely beetle-like and inky black but deadly ironclad beasts are chugging upstream to pound two forts into submission. One will fall quickly, and with little fight, the other will take days and see savage combat. Where a determined Brig General is preparing to show his family, his country, and himself that he's no failure, he can, in fact, succeed, maybe even excel. Where a group of cold but confident confederate soldiers is readying to defend their new country no matter the cost. Let's go back to the battle of Fort Donelson. Listen on Spotify iTunes  Sources - Grant by Ron Chernow and The Civil War: A Narrative. Unconditional Surrender - Col. Heath at Fort Donelson "Sleep poorly, you bastards..." grumbled Col. John Heath as he watched the Union officers trudge back down a snow-covered corpse-strewn palisade. The emissaries had, under a flag of truce, brought a message for whoever was in command of Fort Donelson. It was most likely an agreement to negotiate a surrender of the Fort. Yesterday's fight had started so well that, for a moment, Col. Heath thought they might just make it, they might just win even. But the South seemed to get a lot of tough breaks in the last 24 hours, mused the Colonel as he folded his arms against the chilly early morning air. There was no point in delaying the inevitable. He watched for a moment longer as the soon to be victors grew smaller, threw his cigar stub aside and began to head back. The HQ was in the ugly, long, and squat Dover Hotel right on the riverbank. Col. Heath wasn't sure who was in charge of the garrison anymore, but he knew whoever it was they'd be there. The gunboats the Yanks had brought down from Fort Henry proved more bark than bite. Col. Heath had heard from the men at that fight that these new technological monsters were impervious to artillery fire. The frightened faces from Fort Henry whispered about how that place had been pounded by shot so continuous that she fell in under two hours. Col Heath surmised there was likely more to it than just a couple of gunboats, but when the very same ironclads steamed into view, he had to admit they struck a fearsome figure. Of course, Fort Donelson was no pushover, and he knew it. More a ring of earthworks and heavy artillery, Donelson used the land to perfection. A warren of trenches, crisscrossed by streams and gully's, the landward side of Donelson was designed to play murder on anyone brave (or dumb) enough to attack. And the riverside of the fort wasn't much easier on the attacker.Listen on Spotify  iTunes  This week’s sources - Grant by Ron Chernow and The Civil War: A Narrative. We have a third Railsplitter this week!  Blogger Civil War Fangirl joins us to chat about the latter stages of the Civil War.  We talk about parrellels between Sherman and Lincoln and what that meant for the end of the war and beyond.  We also have an excellent submission for This Week in Lincoln from Mary, Civil War Fangirl herself!

We're getting our mobile recording set-up in gear here at Dirty Boulevard. For our first live podcast, we checked out Nena Anderson live at the Grant Grill inside the historic U.S. Grant Hotel in the Gaslamp. She's joined by Rob Thorsen on bass and Adrian Demain on guitar. When she's not picking-up (even more) SD Music Award nominations, Nena plays in about a jillion bands, designs very snazzy merch cases, and posts on her foodie-blog.Check out her new record that just came out on Kalinda Records:For our first live podcast, it came off without a hitch (minus a little bit of strange guitar-amp interference). Enjoy, and stay dirty!Sorry for the dark pics... Audio books by Mike Vendetti brings you the Grant and Lee podcast where I read from two audio books written just after the Civil War. One the autobiography of Ulysses S grant, ''Personal Memoirs of US Grant'', the other ''A Life of General Robert E Lee'', by John Eston Cook. In today's podcast, I read first from Grants book, then John Eston Cook's book. They cover the same period of time, early May 1864.
