"It is a great story," Kulfan said on the podcast. "You need these type of stories throughout the course of a long season. I think the team really embraced it last night. He's kind of an everyman Joe. He's 31 years old, a career minor leaguer from the area, from Pinckney and went to play at Northern (Michigan). He's stayed in Grand Rapids since 2016 because he wants to build a base for his family."

Twinsburg High School teacher Daneé Pinckney says she knew she wanted to be a teacher ever since she was a small child, but it wasn't that long ago that she found herself at a burnout point in her career and was considering leaving the profession. Starting an African American literature course for her students and empowering them to be engaged citizens helped reignite her passion. Now, as the 2025 Ohio Teacher of the Year, Pinckney is hoping to help other educators find their passion again while shining a spotlight on what they need to succeed for their students. The course addressed a need for representation sought by both students and community members. She obtained grant funding to support its implementation enriching educational experiences for all.Using literature as the anchor, she works to encourage students' engagement in community service and activism projects instilling in them a sense of social responsibility and civic engagement. She believes students can change the world “right here and right now.” Believing this to be true, her students most recently collaborated with students in Ghana and led a community fundraiser building global community and empathy. Shortly after the creation of the nation's first municipal orphanage in 1790, the citizens of Charleston contributed generously to the construction of a large and well-documented edifice on Boundary (now Calhoun) Street that housed thousands of children between 1794 and 1951. The location of the institution's initial home, visited by President George Washington in May 1791, is far less remembered, however. A search for clues to the location of Charleston's first Orphan House leads to a forgotten Pinckney family property in the heart of Colleton Square.

Pinckney spent his summers in the professional clubhouse where he learned the intricacies of the game. He began to interview players in 2015 and was hired by the organization as the Press Box & Player Procurement Asst. in 2018. In 2019, he assisted the field manager in assembling a league championship winning squad. In 2022, he was named the Director of Digital Content. Pinckney has always had a passion for growing the game of baseball and finding ways to assist the younger generation. In 2023, he published his book Passion Prevails to help youth players navigate their careers as they face adversity. He recently graduated from Montclair State University with a degree in Sports Communication. At the end of an epic three-part hearing Thursday, South Carolina Judge Clifton Newman sentenced Alex Murdaugh's former best friend and co-conspirator Cory Fleming to 20 years in state prison for his role in helping Alex steal millions from the Satterfield and Pinckney families. True Sunlight co-hosts Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell break down that dramatic hearing, plus they discuss what went down in two other hearings that happened in this same courtroom: One for Alex and one for Russell Laffitte. Liz and Mandy have also spent days dissecting those documents as the accusations against Becky were very serious. In the latest chapter of the Murdaugh legal saga, former Lowcountry attorney Cory Fleming was handed a 46-month sentence, amounting to nearly four years, by a federal judge. This decision follows his guilty plea in May for conspiring with Alex Murdaugh to embezzle funds from the estate of Murdaugh's late housekeeper, Gloria Satterfield. Beyond the prison sentence, Fleming was also directed to pay $102,000 in restitution alongside a $20,000 fine. On completion of his prison term, he will undergo three years of supervised release. Fleming's cooperation with the prosecutors contrasted sharply with the actions of Russell Laffitte, another alleged Murdaugh conspirator, sentenced to seven years following a trial. Both Satterfield and Pinckney families, the victims in this scandal, were present in the courtroom. A visibly emotional Fleming, surrounded by his family, addressed the room, expressing remorse and naming each victim in his apology. His sentiments were met with grace, as Pamela Pinckney responded, “I just pray that you know God give Cory Fleming the strength to get through what he got to go through just as well as me and my family, God give us strength to go through what we got to go through.” However, the highlight of the hearing was the comparison between Fleming and Laffitte. Emily Limehouse, the head prosecutor, and Judge Richard Gergel emphasized the differences in their approaches. Limehouse praised Fleming's acceptance of responsibility, saying, "It promotes respect to law and our efficient administration of justice." Yet, Judge Gergel underscored the gravity of Fleming's crimes, hoping such a sentence acts as a deterrent against lawyers exploiting vulnerable clients.
