NMHU professors Lauren Addario and Becca Sharp join Emily Withnall to talk about their program and their 20-year partnership with the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs, including their exhibition design at many of DCA's Historic Sites. This partnership and internship program is one way students from rural parts of the state can learn about various jobs in the arts and develop their skills in design, interpretation, cultural technology, and so much more. The goal is to equip local stakeholders with resources and tools to address gaps in broadband access and improve digital literacy. The qualifying counties will be given a comprehensive guide for expanding digital inclusion programs and applying for state and federal funding. The center will help bring high-speed fiber internet and give customers a choice of internet providers. Construction of the data center is expected to begin early in 2025. The new location is expected to employ around 30 people. The Preservation Alliance of West Virginia has awarded the repair of a log-built picnic pavilion and other structures at the Blue Bend Recreation Area with the title of “Most Significant Save of a Historic Site.” One of the principal structures in the recreation area, which is part of the Monongahela National Forest,  is the pavilion, which was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. October 2024 Meeting of the Chicago Civil War Round Table: Larry Hewitt on "Port Hudson and the Birth of Combat Photography"  For more info: WWW.ChicagoCWRT.ORG  Larry Hewitt will present the who, what, where, when, why, and how the firm of McPherson & Oliver made photographic history. Between June 14 and July 9, 1863, the final 25 days of the 48- day siege of Port Hudson, McPherson & Oliver moved about the battlefield memorializing soldiers in action--and in combat! In the process of making this visual record of opposing armies actively engaged, an image of Union soldiers sharpshooting opposite the Priest Cap was not these two artists only claim to photographic fame. Other images include one taken at midnight (the first ever taken in the dark), one converted into a composite print (created by combining portions of two negatives), the Confederate army at the surrender ceremony, and examples of time-lapse photography. McPherson & Oliver also produced the most widely circulated cartes-de-visite of the Civil War, three different views of "Whipped Peter." But the duo seldom receives credit for these images of an abused slave. Other studios, including Matthew Brady's, published them as their own work. As with the battlefield they immortalized, McPherson and Oliver deserve better. 2  A native of Louisville, Kentucky, Lawrence Lee Hewitt received his B.A. (1974) from the University of Kentucky and his M.A. (1977) and Ph.D. (1984) from Louisiana State University. He was the manager of the Port Hudson (1978- 1982) and Camp Moore (1982-1986) Historic Sites in Louisiana and taught at Southeastern Louisiana University (1985-1996). He was a tenured full professor when he resigned to marry a native of Chicago, where he currently resides. The 1991 recipient of SLU's President's Award for Excellence in Research, the 1991 Charles L. Dufour Award, the 2011 Dr. Arthur W. Bergeron, Jr. Award, and the 2013 Nevins-Freeman Award, he is a past president of the Baton Rouge Civil War Round Table. Hewitt's publications include Port Hudson, Confederate Bastion on the Mississippi (1987). Andrew J. Wagenhoffer's blog Civil War Books and Authors named Hewitt's Port Hudson: The Most Significant Battlefield Photographs of the Civil War 2021 Book of the Year.

The Thomas Cole National Historic Site has a new visitors center that transforms how people experience the national historic landmark. The building – named the Cole Center – has been designed by Stephen Shadley, the renowned New York City-based architectural designer who is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Thomas Cole Site.

Today's guest is the Superintendent of Gettysburg National Military Park and Eisenhower National Historic Site. Kristina Heister is the first female to hold the important position and she'll tell stories of her family's connection to the American Civil War. You'll hear about the $13 million rehabilitation project on Little Round Top that was completed after almost 2 years of work. We also talk about the impact beavers have made at the “pond”, found at the base of Little Round Top. That book Between the Wires: The Janowska Camp and the Holocaust in Lviv will be released in August 2024 from Nebraska University Press.Kevin Levine is an experienced and award-winning educator, author, and historian with expertise in high school and college classroom instruction, historic site tours, collaborations with museums, and history teacher training. His research and writing are focused primarily on the history and legacy of the Civil War era. He is the author and editor of three books, including most recently, Searching For Black Confederates: The Civil War's Most Persistent Myth (2019), Remembering The Battle of the Crater: War as Murder (2012) and Interpreting the Civil War at Museums and Historic Sites (2017). He is currently at work on A Glorious Fate: The Life and Legacy of Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, which is under advance contract with the University of North Carolina Press as well as editing the collected wartime and postwar correspondence of Captain John Christopher Winsmith.Rich Condon is a public historian from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and a graduate of Shepherd University. For over a decade, he has worked with a multitude of sites and organizations, including The Battle of Franklin Trust, Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall and Museum, and the National Park Service. Rich has written for Civil War Times Magazine, The Civil War Monitor, American Battlefield Trust, as well as Emerging Civil War, and operates the Civil War Pittsburgh blog. He currently lives in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

June is PRIDE month and we're celebrating by bringing you an episode about efforts to bring LGBTQ+ history to light. As one guest, historian William Mann writes, “Throughout its history, Connecticut's LGBTQ population has moved from leading hidden, solitary lives to claiming visible, powerful, valuable, and contributing places in society.”  In this episode, we talk about what historians have found in Connecticut's Colonial records, some surprising connections to famous individuals and landmarks and at the end of the episode, there's a recommendation for  three places to visit to celebrate LGBTQ+ history.   In order to prepare for this episode, two digital resources created by our guests were used. She is advising the Ridgefield LGBTQ Oral History Project and has recently worked with the Palmer-Warner House in East Haddam, Connecticut, and the Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site in Hyde Park, New York. Hugh Glass is best known for his incredible survival story. After being mauled by a grizzly, being left for dead and dragging himself nearly 250 miles across the country - his story, or at least a version of it, has been immortalized in the film The Revenant. Break 1: GCPS   STORY 1: 'Dateline' Features Murder Of Heather Strube — Who Was Killed In Snellville NBC's "Dateline" aired an episode focusing on the 2009 murder of Heather Strube, a 25-year-old mother from Conyers, killed in the parking lot of a Snellville Target. The episode included interviews with detectives Trey Downs and Dean Boone, and former Snellville Police Chief Roy Whitehead. Strube was shot in the head following a dispute with her estranged husband, Steve, in the parking lot. The two were exchanging their 18-month-old son as part of their divorce proceedings. The episode delved into the investigation and the pursuit of an unlikely suspect. STORY 2: German Electronics Company Moves U.S. Headquarters To Duluth Area German electronics company Leuze Electronics Inc. relocated its U.S. headquarters from Michigan to Duluth, Gwinnett County, bringing over a dozen new jobs to the area. The move was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Partnership Gwinnett and Gwinnett Chamber officials. Leuze specializes in sensor solutions and sees Gwinnett County's dynamic business environment and skilled workforce as conducive to its growth strategy. The relocation represents a $1.2 million capital investment and is expected to create 17 new jobs. Partnership Gwinnett and local officials hailed the move as a testament to the region's business-friendly environment and welcomed Leuze as an integral part of the community. STORY 3: Trickum Middle School's Ryan Queen Named Georgia Principal Of The Year Ryan Queen, principal of Trickum Middle School, was surprised with the news that he has been named the 2024 Georgia Principal of the Year by the Georgia Association of Secondary School Principals. The announcement was made during a visit by the association to the school. Queen, visibly moved, expressed gratitude to the school community for their support and credited them for his success. Gwinnett County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Calvin J. Watts praised Queen's leadership and highlighted Trickum Middle School's academic success under his guidance. Queen, with 26 years of experience in Gwinnett County, has held various educational roles before becoming principal at Trickum. He is the third GCPS Principal to win the GASSP Principal of the Year award since 2018. We'll be right back Break 2: TOM WAGES   STORY 4: Inmate guilty of pandemic fraud sent back to prison Isaac Camon, a Valdosta resident serving a federal prison sentence for drug trafficking and gun convictions, received an additional 36-month prison term for wire fraud related to illegally obtaining money from a pandemic unemployment program. U.S. District Judge Tilman E. Self III sentenced Camon to a total of 72 months in prison, with three years of supervised release. Camon falsely claimed unemployment benefits while serving time in prison. He filed a fraudulent claim, asserting employment with non-existent companies. Camon's intended fraud loss amounted to $19,452, with restitution of $16,322 owed to the Georgia Department of Labor. The FBI and other agencies investigated the case, emphasizing the pursuit of justice against COVID-19 related fraud. Reporting attempted fraud involving COVID-19 is encouraged through the Department of Justice's National Center for Disaster Fraud Hotline. STORY 5: Georgia senators back bill to help teachers pay for classroom supplies State lawmakers in Georgia are proposing a solution to address the problem of low-paid teachers having to pay for classroom supplies out of their own pockets: a centralized online purchasing system. Senate Bill 464, which passed the Senate with a 52-1 vote, aims to establish this system under the oversight of state School Superintendent Richard Woods. The bill also includes provisions related to statewide literacy testing. Some teachers spend over $1,000 annually on supplies, and while Governor Brian Kemp has offered grants for supplies, the need remains significant. The proposed system aims to alleviate this burden by providing funding for teachers to purchase necessary supplies. They offer all-terrain wheelchairs at 11 parks, ensuring visitors with mobility challenges can explore nature trails and enjoy activities like fishing and adaptive hunts. Additionally, ADA cabins provide comfortable accommodations, while accessible trails cater to various abilities, including paved options. Hard Labor Creek State Park features an ADA kayak launch, allowing individuals of all abilities to experience kayaking. Don Carter State Park offers an ADA horse ramp for accessible equestrian experiences. Furthermore, park rangers provide aids and services for effective communication, ensuring everyone can participate equally. STORY 7: U.S. Rep. Andrew Clyde accepting entries for 9th District Congressional Art Competition U.S. Rep. Andrew Clyde, R-Ga., is hosting the 9th Congressional District Art Competition, inviting high school students to submit their artwork. Entries are accepted until April 19, with the winner having their piece displayed in the U.S. Capitol for a year. Clyde encourages Northeast Georgian students to participate, emphasizing the opportunity to showcase creativity. Artwork must be two-dimensional and original, with specific size restrictions. Accepted mediums include paintings, drawings, prints, mixed media, computer-generated art, and photographs, with adherence to U.S. copyright laws required.
