On this installment of Retronauts, join Bob Mackey, Henry Gilbert, Stuart Gipp, Drew Mackie (from Thrilling Tales of Old Video Games), and Jess O'Brien (AKA Voidburger) as the crew uses their most powerful analytical skills to fully deconstruct a movie made for preverbal audiences. It's that time of the year again, so hang your stockings, haul home a coniferous tree, and pack the required survival gear for another harrowing trip to the Retronauts Holiday Cabin in Parts Unknown. And for this 15th outing, we'll be taking a long, mostly confused look at Video Power: the Captain N also-ran that assembled a team of C-list protagonists for some poorly animated, Acclaim-promoting fun. (Before being completely retooled into a game show the following year.) So listen in as Bob Mackey, Henry Gilbert, and Drew Mackie as the crew assembles and attempts to learn the true meaning of brand integration. Cover art by Nick Daniel. In 1990, Fox aired a pilot that then went unseen for over 26 years. Its name? Hollywood Dog. And while it isn't very good, this live-action/animation hybrid—developed at the same time as The Simpsons—features some truly ambitious special effects for a network that had barely gotten off of the ground. We could only rely on fuzzy memories for the nearly three decades Hollywood Dog remained unavailable, but thankfully, some kind maniac discovered a clean copy, and it's currently available for all to see on Youtube. Now, three entirely different maniacs can discuss it on this very podcast! This week on What A Cartoon, join us and special guest Drew Mackie (of Gayest Episode Ever) as we gaze in terror at Hollywood Dog: the Poochie-fied character who threatened to kick off the '90s, but instead kicked the bucket and faded into obscurity. In the past I used to write about forgotten music on my blog, and now I talk about forgotten and obscure movies, but I rarely talk about the forgotten obscurities of TV. But recently, I watched Michael Darling's amazing YouTube videos covering sitcoms and dramas that primetime forgot, and I felt compelled to bring him on the show to cover how he made these amazing feature-length TV mixtapes. And since I'm no TV expert, I also asked Gayest Episode Ever's Drew Mackie to join me as well!
Ahhh, real (hot) monsters!! Last year, we explored the NES era's few horror games and ranked them on their general spookiness levels—given the standards of the time. And now we're back to do the exact same thing for a whole new generation of consoles! This week on Retronauts, join Bob Mackey, Kole Ross (of Duckfeed.tv), Diamond Feit, and Drew Mackie (of Gayest Episode Ever and Thrilling Tales of Old Video Games) as the crew unites to discuss a magical time when horror games could have evocative titles like "Decap Attack" and "Zombies Ate My Neighbors." It's Halloween! Spoooooooky chills are in the air as Rayanne plots a seance, but winds up making a connection with someone she least unexpected. Meanwhile, Angela finds a new boy to fixate on — one who's even more doomed than Jordan. Patty and Graham obtain some haunted (???) outfits from a mysterious costume shop. And Danielle finally gets some attention.Chatting with me this week are drag icon Peaches Christ, something of an expert when it comes to Halloween and alter egos. And also Drew Mackie, co-host of the podcast Gayest Episode Ever and the mini-podcast Weirdest Episode Ever, to discuss how gay and weird this episode is. And then I sit down with James to talk about dweeb polycules, costumes that flopped, and our stage personae (The Rhinestone Trash Bag and Malevolent Smell).
Another queer-themed episode of Simpsons means we again called upon two experts, Drew Mackie and Glen Lakin from the excellent Gayest Episode Ever Podcast! After Homer gets mad at Marge for reasons he thinks are defensible (they aren't), he moves in with two gay characters who both become key parts of Springfield. We deconstruct this 2003 approach to gay sitcom characters and their legacy (that Drew & Glen are connected to. Plus we detail how Harvey Fierstein wasn't in this while Weird Al was, with tons more trivia in this week's queer podcast! The former U.S.S.R. had its own synthpop and new wave acts, but the Cold War prevented a lot of Americans from hearing how good they were at assembling those 80s music building blocks into cool formations we didn't get here. Drew Mackie and Glen Lakin of Gayest Episode Ever join the guys to talk about the queerest TV, both intentional and not, including The Golden Girls (duh), Growing Pains (huh?) and Dinosaurs (whut???). Plus, Burger King fires back at Chik Fil'a, whose top brass -- no surprise here -- still hates us. And Brent, Eliot and H. Alan look back at a vintage clip of Barbara Walters interrogating Harvey Fierstein about whether being gay makes you, like, an alien? And we finally get an answer to a burning question: does Brent know who Jean Smart is? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Sixteen songs I totally vouch for and then one that’s about a woman who is actually a cat. Special assist from Sam Pancake, host of a podcast I produce, Sam Pancake Presents the Monday Afternoon Movie. The final track comes Steve, longtime online friend whose own collection of pop culture antiquities, Obscure Video Games, you can see on Twitter and on Tumblr. Here’s a different sort of episode. Instead of blocks of a few songs, each grouped around a theme, this episode is all based on a single theme — and it’s one big block. Have you ever seen Friday the Thirteenth: A New Beginning? Well, this one is inspired by that movie’s new wave girl, Violet, and the dark dance music I’d like to think she’d listen to.
