I am super excited to share my podcast with life-long friend Caroline Fenkel! Fun fact – Caroline was my 5th guest on the podcast over 5 years ago and it was one of the most downloaded episodes! Caroline (34) became sober 15 years ago and since then has made a tremendous impact in the recovery industry. Simultaneously, she also earned her master's degree from Bryn Mawr College and later earned her doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania. Over the course of her career, Caroline has worked at several national credible companies, such as Newport Academy, where they offered l lifesaving treatment for adolescents. However there was one issue that slowly began to frustrate her: 93% of the adolescent population do not have access to high acuity care – it was impossible to reach everyone that needed help when running brick and mortar facilities. There are major limitations such as insurance, transportation, limited beds, and financial barriers. As a solution, Caroline co-founded Charlie Health with Carter Barnhart and Justin Weiss over two years ago. Today they are the largest provider of virtual IOP (intensive outpatient) programs for teens, young adults, and families navigating mental health challenges. They are immediately accessible to any adolescent in need of help, given that they are virtual and accept both commercial insurance and Medicaid so that finances aren't a barrier. In addition, what separates Charlie Health from your traditional brick and mortar facilities is that rather than group patients together based on their physical location, Charlie Health customizes comprehensive treatment plans by carefully matching patients in groups of peers with similar backgrounds, preferences, and needs. It has been incredible to watch the company expand and disrupt the mental health industry. Link to Charlie Health website: https://www.charliehealth.com/

I don't know about you, but I have been a lifelong fan of Star Wars. So I always love the Fourth of May. And I may or may not have been at a few Comic Cons in my lifetime. And if you know anything about the cosplay community, they are some of the most dynamic and fun people you'll ever meet. But even more so are the 501st Legion. And if you don't know who they are, you really should look them up. The incredible charitable work that they do is one of the reasons that my next guest, who is a lifelong friend of mine, Justin Weiss, chose to join his local fiber first, which is the Empire City Garrison where he dresses up like a stormtrooper. In fact, you might hear a little bit of a muffled audio in the beginning because he is in full costume as a stormtrooper which kind of shows that yes, it's charitable work, but it might be a little bit beyond that too.

Hey listeners! If you're a Strong Towns follower, don't forget that March 10 is the deadline to submit your city to the 2019 #StrongestTown contest. Verdunity is proud to be a sponsor of this year's contest. Even if you don't submit, it's a great way to learn how other cities are incrementally building financial strength and improving lives. Sign up here! ** [EDIT: The original release of this episode had some audio we meant to clip out. We've gotten that taken care of now! Re-download your episode if it's still showing up. You'll know it when you hear it. :-P Sorry about that!] Today's show (interview starts at 8:15): We’ve talked before about the importance of understanding your city’s true financial situation. For the majority of cities across the country, their development pattern has put them in a long-term budget shortfall. Our guests today are a pair of city leaders who are doing everything they can to make sure their development decisions strengthen their financial situation, rather than jeopardizing it.  Michael Kovacs and Justin Weiss are the city manager and assistant city manager for the City of Fate, Texas, a small city on the outskirts of Dallas. We talk about their transition from business as usual city management to the realization that their city’s development pattern was actually setting them up to go broke—and the way they conveyed that to staff and council to get them on board with making some pretty drastic changes. We also talk about the spreadsheet model they have been using in negotiation with developers, to steer any new development in a direction that puts them in a better long-term financial position. And we talk about their economic development strategy, which is focused on a small core footprint in the center of the town, and is geared toward small, local businesses rather than courting big outside corporations.  Link to the Curbside Chat videos mentioned in this episode: https://www.strongtowns.org/journal/2018/7/27/a-strong-towns-crash-course ** The Go Cultivate! podcast is a project of Verdunity.
