Imagine these four MBAs sitting in class when their phones start blowing up with orders for eyeglasses after they lost the business idea competition at the Warton School of Business for the same idea. Dave Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders Podcast, teaching business owners the not so secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom and pop to major brands. Stephen Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector and storyteller. I'm Stephen's sidekick and business partner, Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, a word from our sponsor, which is, well, it's us, but we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients. So here's one of those. [No Bull RV Ad] Dave Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders Podcast, Dave Young here, along with Stephen Semple, and we're talking about businesses and innovation and ideas that take a business from tiny to empire. There's usually something that they turn on, something that they come across, they figure out. And it makes all the difference. Today we're talking about, boy, this is another one of those that bridges the brick and mortar and online world and a bit of a disruptor, if I'm not mistaken. You said we're doing Warby Parker today, and I know that they're an online eyeglass company and I don't know much else. Stephen Semple: Well, they are an online glass company and they now have, gosh, I forgot to look up how many stores they have, but they now have a few hundred stores. So, they've started to open brick and mortar. But the part of the story we want to talk about is what they did when they were just strictly an online business because they went to the brick and mortar later. So again, the idea of these stories is to talk about the early days, what turned them into an empire. And that was when they were online. So we're going to focus today on the online part, but they were founded in 2010 is when they started by Neil Blumenthal, David Gilboa, Andy Hunt, and Jeff Raider. And in September 2021, they went public with an evaluation of almost $7 billion. But when they went public, yes, 7 billion. Dave Young: 7 billion. Stephen Semple: That's a little bit of a payoff, eh? Dave Young: Yeah, no kidding. Stephen Semple: Yeah. So founded in 2010, 11 years later, $7 billion. So, the idea started in 2008. And basically what happened is the guys were together and they were sharing their frustration with losing glasses and the cost to replace them. And these guys all met at the Wharton School of Business. They were students there and they all had this common frustration of buying glasses and they kept losing them. And the example that got them started was Dave talking about leaving glasses on an airplane. He left his glasses on the airplane and they cost $800. And at the same time, now think about this, it's different today when we look at the price of an iPhone. But in 2010 you could buy an iPhone for $200 and he's standing there going, "This iPhone is 200 bucks and these plastic glasses are 800." This makes no sense to him. And Andy who liked buying things online was frustrated that he couldn't easily buy glasses online. And they felt like the technology of how glasses were made and sold, felt so antiquated. And when they got talking about it turns out, talk about this weird connection. They get talking about it. It turns out Neil had experience in the glasses space. He had spent a number of years working for an eyewear nonprofit. So, he had been going to factories and buying glasses as cheaply as possible to be giving away in these third world countries. And this started a conversation and Neil would even be involved in the designing of this stuff and taking it to the factory. So he knew the business. And it turns out what he shared with them, is that the business was dominated by a handful of players. Companies like Luxottica. Luxottica is a $30 billion business. They make Oakley's, they make Ray-Ban,

Today's episode is the second of a three-part Pragmatic Folks series and we are joined again by Dave Thomas and Andy Hunt, authors of The Pragmatic Programmer, to talk more in-depth about how you are in control of your own destiny even when it seems like you're not.
Today's episode is the first of a three-part Pragmatic Folks series and we are joined by Dave Thomas and Andy Hunt to talk about the 20th anniversary edition of The Pragmatic Programmer. This new edition was not only an opportunity for them to revise the material but also to revisit their thinking and see how ideas have changed over the course of twenty years.
Due to the visual and interactive nature of this message we recommend viewing via youtube: https://youtu.be/_nQH4ErpUNEIn this message we hear from Ps. Andy Hunt and Duncan Robertson (Head Chef & Owner of Holy Basil Thai) as they discuss the difference between the illusion of freedom - having everything under our own control, and true freedom - giving God control. Communion was brought by Levi Mugamu.
All of us have become more reliant on technology and software to solve problems and improve our lives. However, many of us understand less and less about the programming that goes into these solutions. Further, we forget or ignore the human element of this problem solving. In this episode, I speak with ANDY HUNT who has devoted his life to these issues. Andy Hunt is a programmer turned consultant, author and publisher. He's authored a dozen books including the best-selling “THE PRAGMATIC PROGRAMMER,” was one of the 17 authors of the AGILE MANIFESTO and founders of the Agile Alliance, and co-founded the PRAGMATIC BOOKSHELF, publishing award-winning and critically acclaimed books for software developers. He's currently writing science fiction (see conglommora.com) and experimenting with The GROWS Method®. We talk about his early days of programming and the power of community and process in the world of software design as we go into his experience with broader consulting at the enterprise level. Further on, Andy dives into what he considers to be important in the future of programming and advice for young programmers. Finally, as a consummate Renaissance Man, Andy discusses how his hobbies in writing science fiction, music production and woodworking excite his brain and inform his problem solving ability. Andy started in the do-it-yourself days of CP/M and the S100 bus, of Heathkits and Radio Electronics. Andy wrote his first real program, a combination text editor and database manager, for an Ohio Scientific Challenger 4P. It was a great era for tinkering. Andy started hacking in 6502 assembler, modifying operating systems, and wrote his first commercial program (a Manufacturing Resources Planning system) in 1981. He taught himself Unix and C, and began to design and architect larger, more connected systems. Working at large companies, Andy kept an ear on Usenet, and started his early email habit via a direct bang-path to ihnp4. Next he settled into electronic pre-press and computer graphics, and worked on that wondrous eye-candy that was Silicon Graphics machines. By now a firm command of several flavors of Unix, from BSD to System V, led Andy to try consulting in the early 1990's. His knack for stirring things up really began to come in handy, and it soon became obvious that many of his clients each suffered similar problems—problems that Andy had already seen and fixed before. Andy joined up with Dave Thomas and they wrote the seminal software development book, The Pragmatic Programmer, followed a year later by the original Programming Ruby: The Pragmatic Programmer's Guide, which introduced the Western world to this new language from Japan. Together they founded The Pragmatic Programmers and are well known as founders of the agile movement and authors of the Agile Manifesto, as well as proponents of Ruby and more flexible programming paradigms. They founded the Pragmatic Bookshelf publishing business in 2003, helping keep developers at the top of their game. Andy is a founder of the Pragmatic Programmers, founder of the Agile Alliance and one of the 17 authors of the Agile Manifesto, and author of a dozen or so books on programming, agile methods and learning, as well as science fiction and adventure. He is an active musician and woodworker, and continues looking for new areas where he can stir things up. Comments from Andy on his early career- -Where did your initial interest in programming develop? (The Do-It-Yourself days) -What were the types of problems that attracted your attention? -What languages did you gravitate toward? Working for larger, more complex situations -What were the big lessons you pick up in those work environments? -Programming considered by laymen as a solitary pursuit- was there an adjustment in delegating work or collobroating? When does management of strategy get in the way of execution?
Andy Hunt is a writer of books on software development, co-author of "The Pragmatic Programmer," one of the 17 original authors of the Agile Manifesto, and a founder of "The Pragmatic Bookshelf" publishing agency. The video is here: https://youtu.be/zebqDkVfY-g

In fact, the very first computer I ever experienced up close and personal not just read about was a teletype typewriter with an acoustic color. And you know, the kids in the audience are going, What's an acoustic coupler, grandpa? Right? If you remember the movie war games, you dial the phone with a handset and you stick a handset down in these foam cups and it goes. It makes the noises, and that's how you talk to the big giant mainframe, you know, and then literally in the next county over. So that was sort of my first, my first experience and I was hooked." [00:35:54] "You are told in school that you're a dummy, that you can't ever learn anything that you're not good at Math. Oh my God. You know, I'm not a violent person, but I would shoot every teacher who told some girl, Oh, girls aren't good at math. You don't need to study that right? Bullshit. Hundred percent legit bullshit. The problem with that Is if you've been told by an authority figure, by a teacher that you can't learn something and then you believe it, then your brain wires itself so that you're not going to be able to learn it. It's a self modifying machine and it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Which, to me, it's criminal. It's absolutely criminal." Highlights from the show: [00:01:32] Guest Introduction [00:02:40] Talk to us a little bit about where you grew up and what was it like there. [00:05:54] From the early age, did you just decide I'm going to go to school and I'm going to study computers and software? [00:11:00] What is it with this pragmatic stuff? What does that mean to you? [00:13:14] What if you're somebody who's just been constrained by your processes? [00:20:16] Is it possible for me to be able to think like a software engineer, like an exceptional software engineer or software developer without necessarily being one? [00:34:04] What is expertize and why is it so difficult to articulate? [00:38:25] Can you talk to us about what Dreyfus model is and and why is it important that we understand this Dreyfus model? [00:41:58] What's a good way for us to kind of accurately self assess where we would fall on this spectrum? [00:54:18] How was it that you got interested in these type of books (pragmatic thinking) and how have they helped you and your journey? [00:58:15] It's one hundred years in the future. What do you want to be remembered for? [01:00:50] What is GROWS method? [01:06:23] What are you listening to right now? What do you have on kind of repeat? Paddy Davitt speaks exclusively to former Newcastle United, West Brom, and Charlton striker Andy Hunt about his long-standing connections to Norfolk and how he ended up playing in the Premier League. The former Norwich City trialist has now been living in Belize for the past 20 years and has an academy filled with young talent that he is bringing to the attention of clubs across Europe and the US.
This is the last of my conversations with the 2021 cohort of the AI for Social Impact Program run by Microsoft for Startups and the Social Tech Trust. I've been looking forward to speaking to these guys for quite a few weeks, but we've held off until now to coincide with their official launch – which just happens to be taking place at 10 Downing Street shortly before the interview gets aired. That recognition from the Government is a hint at the importance of what they are doing. We are talking about a game-changing, science and data-driven approach to Safety in Sport, which is going to have a major impact on our long term enjoyment of all types of sports from childhood to old age and across the spectrum from schools to elite level clubs. So there's a very obvious positive impact on our physical and mental health and wellbeing, but the social and economic implications go far beyond that. It's a real privilege for me to be meeting these guys at this exciting early stage – it seems like I'm in the right place at the right time. They've already put a super-strong, highly experienced team together, including big names from the sporting world, and have very significant momentum. My guests are Andy Hunt and Damian Smith, respectively CEO and CTO of Podium Analytics, an NGO that seeks to significantly reduce the incidence and long-term impact of injury in sport. Their very straightforward objective is to help ensure that more people can participate in sport for a lifetime. So this is social impact on a potentially massive scale. The organisation was founded by Ron Dennis, founder and former CEO and Chairman of McLaren, who has been at ther forefront of safety in sport for many years. He is still very much involved as Chairman. Andy came on board as CEO 18 months ago, from his previous role as CEO of World Sailing. Prior to that, he has CEO of the British Olympic Association for 5 years, including leadership of TeamGB at the London 2012 Olympics. He's also a non-exec on the boards of both England hockey and Gloucester rugby. Damian joined Podium last year, having previously been head of Information Technology at the England & Wales Cricket Board for a number of years.
MBJ's Sean Ryan talks to one of the region's most prominent voices in the fight against Covid-19. Dr. Ben Weston has emerged as one of the lead communicators of clear and accurate Covid info over the past year and a half. He's working with both Milwaukee County and the Medical College of Wisconsin, and is an experienced emergency room doctor. The Milwaukee Business Journal also recognized Weston as a public health leader in this year's Health Care Champions program. Later, Sean is joined by two of Marquette University's leaders in real estate education. There was the big announcement this week that a new Marquette program will let real estate undergrads participate in a $1 million investment fund to buy and manage properties. We'll hear more about that and other real estate talent pipeline efforts from Vito Taphorn, who will direct the new program, and Andy Hunt, director of Marquette University's Center for Real Estate. I spoke with Andy Hunt. Andy is one of the 17 authors who wrote the Agile Manifesto back in 2001. 2 years earlier he wrote, together with Dave Thomas one of the most seminal programming books called "The Pragmatic Programmer". The book has been referenced many times here in the podcast by so many guest that said it has shaped their careers. There were so many potential paths that I could have taken with this conversation. I decided to stick mostly to the present time to see what Andy does currently but we also went through some of the learnings from The Pragmatic Programmer, which I have the 20th anniversary edition hard cover with me. Andy spoke about the challenges that new people coming to the tech industry must face, which is: where do I start? So many technologies. So many options. How do I narrow them down? We also spoke about education and what is currently missing like teaching soft skills including communication and many more aspects. We discussed about what is at the code of being a pragmatic programmer, which according to Andy is the thirst for knowledge and the curiosity. We even talked about Andy's adventures in writing science fiction! I will leave you with The Pragmatic Programmer, Andy Hunt! Full show notes and links: https://SoloCoder.com/87
