The problem with the detection:The “detection” of DMS in the near-infrared portion of the spectrum was very, very flimsy: at only 1-sigma significance, which means there's greater than a ~30% chance that the detection is a fluke. In all sub-field of physics and astronomy, a “1-sigma detection” is known as a non-detection; there is no meaningful signal seen here. While DMS on Earth may primarily arise from biological production mechanisms, it is found all throughout the Universe and, in those environments, is produced entirely by non-biological means. It's been found in the interstellar medium, including in the galactic center's large molecular cloud G+0.693-0.027. It's been produced abiotically in the laboratory right here on Earth (including since 1995) by simple processes, and can be made photochemically elsewhere in the Universe. And it's been found on comets as well, including on the famous comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, which was the target of ESA's Rosetta mission.Hvad kan man egentlig med JWST?En artikel har undersøgt JWST's nøjagtighed og mener ikke at det teleskop er i stand til at give definitivt bevis for noget som dette. “Characterizing rocky or sub-Neptune-size exoplanets with JWST is an intricate task, and moves us away from the notion of finding a definitive “silver bullet” biosignature gas. Indeed, JWST results necessitate us to allow “parallel interpretations” that will perhaps not be resolved until the next generation of observatories.” https://arxiv.org/abs/2504.12946--------------------------------------------2: Hvornår er det okay at trykke på 'BIG NEWS' knappen?Back in 2021, the astrobiology community held a workshop on standards of evidence for biosignatures, which led to a community report discussing responsible standards of evidence and quantifying seven different levels of confidence for announcing biosignatures, with the lowest-confidence levels going to detections that cannot discriminate between different scenarios and mid-confidence levels going to definitive detections that cannot rule out abiotic pathways. To announce “we've found a biosignature” would require multiple, independent, unambiguous signatures of molecules that cannot be produced abiotically at all.Kilde: https://arxiv.org/abs/2210.1429317. April: I en Astronom Facebook gruppe:" This is an appeal. I am very sorry to bring this up in these difficult times, but I think that this latest astronomy news on extraterrestrial life goes very far beyond what in my opinion is responsible science communication. You could argue that this generates excitement in the public that is very much needed, but I think it is very damaging in the long run. Our colleagues from other fields will not take us serious anymore if we go on like this. We are doing fantastic stuff, also the group that has pushed this news. We don't need this, also not now."Og så blev der ellers diskuteret!

On David Hume's An Enquiry Concerning the Principles of Morals (1751). What is morality, and how can we know it? Hume claims that we simply find ourselves with sentiments morally approving and disapproving of various things. Characterizing these post hoc, we can say that in general we approve of what brings utility, and this explains the existence of most laws and mores. These may vary by culture because conditions change the utility calculation in different environments. Get more at partiallyexaminedlife.com. What if your client's tremor, stretch, or undulation wasn't a symptom—but a sign of healing? In this episode, Alex sits down with physical therapist, somatic educator and TRE Provider, Joel Begin to explore the natural, spontaneous movements that often arise in bodywork, movement therapy, and somatic healing—but are still largely misunderstood.Joel shares the story behind his 2022 paper, “Characterizing a Common Class of Spontaneous Movements,” a collaborative work that brings together perspectives from across the globe to map out how tremors, shakes, and fluid movements emerge across therapeutic, spiritual, and cultural contexts. From TRE® and myofascial unwinding to Qigong and authentic movement, Joel helps us reframe these expressions not as random or pathological—but as beneceptive and healing.Together, we explore the potential of spontaneous movement as a doorway into nervous system regulation, trauma resolution, and embodied intelligence. This episode invites you to see what might already be happening in your sessions with new eyes—and perhaps, to trust the body just a little more.Key Highlights: [00:02:00] The Paper That Sparked It All: Characterizing a Common Class of Spontaneous Movements[00:08:00] What Is Myofascial Unwinding?[00:14:30] Modalities That Evoke Spontaneous Movement[00:17:45] Spiritual Practices & Movement States[00:24:00] Case Study: Spontaneous Movement After Surgery[00:27:00] When Movement Feels Uncomfortable[00:33:00] TRE®, Trauma, and the Polyvagal Lens[00:38:45] Understanding Freeze Through Biotensegrity[00:41:00] What Makes These Movements Arise?[00:43:30] Creating a Container for CuriosityLinks & ResourcesJoel Begin's 2022 Paper: “Characterizing a Common Class of Spontaneous Movements” Read the full paper in the International Journal of Therapeutic Massage and BodyworkJoel Begin's Practice – Creative Pathways PTContinuum Movement: https://continuummovement.com/ Somatic Experiencing by Peter Levine: https://www.somaticexperiencing.com/about-peter Polyvagal Theory by Dr. Stephen Porges: https://www.stephenporges.com/ Myofascial Release John F. Meniscus tears have historically been treated with arthroscopy. However, compelling data has shown that this surgery does not work for degenerative meniscus tears. Physical therapy, conversely, has been shown to be a more effective measure for the degenerative meniscus tear, and is a more reasonable first-line measure compared to arthroscopic menisectomy. Still, the public's perception, guided by decades of advice from Sports Medicine Specialists that arthroscopy is the answer for all meniscus tears regardless of the chondral condition in the knee, has not changed with current evidence. This can create uncomfortable conversations with patients who have a degenerative meniscus tear and expect arthroscopy. Coming to us from the University of Buffalo, Drs. Nomi Weiss-Laxer and Leslie Bisson discuss their study examining patient perceptions and expectations of nonoperative treatment for degenerative meniscus tears.

In this episode of the Epigenetics Podcast, we talked with Bas van Steensel from the Netherlands Cancer Institute about his work on characterizing chromatin at the Nuclear Lamina. The Interview starts with discussing Bas van Steensel's significant contributions to understanding genome-nuclear lamina interactions. Bas detailed the development of the DAM-ID technique during his postdoctoral studies, which provided a novel way to map genome-wide occupancy and identify Lamina-Associated Domains (LADs). He elaborated on how LADs reveal a distinct domain architecture, often correlating with gene expression levels. This prompted an exploration of the dynamics of these domains during differentiation processes, allowing insights into how gene activation and repression are influenced by their positioning relative to the nuclear lamina. The conversation highlighted the intricate relationship between chromatin dynamics and gene regulation, with Bas sharing compelling findings on how LADs behave during cell differentiation. The research indicated that regions moving away from the lamina often correlated with increased gene expression, revealing a complex interplay of spatial genome organization and transcriptional activity. Additionally, we ventured into the significance of outreach and transparency in scientific research. Bas shared his philosophy regarding collaboration and the ethical responsibility of scientists to share knowledge and resources openly. He emphasized that making lab notebooks and research processes accessible can greatly enhance reproducibility and understanding in the scientific community.   References Open Science Policy of our lab Guelen, L., Pagie, L., Brasset, E., Meuleman, W., Faza, M. Russel Waymire, IDART (Information Design Assurance Red Team): A Red Team Assessment Methodology

CERIAS Security Seminar Podcast

The Information Design Assurance Red(IDART) methodology is optimized to evaluate system designs and identify vulnerabilities by adopting, in detail, the varying perspectives of a system's most likely adversaries. The results provide system owners with an attacker's-eye view of their system's strengths and weaknesses.IDART can be applied to a diversity of complex networks, systems, and applications, including those that mix cyber technology with industrial machinery or other equipment. The methodology can be used throughout a system's lifecycle but the assessments are less expensive and more beneficial during design and development, when weaknesses can be found and mitigated more easily.Developed at Sandia National Laboratories in the mid-1990s and updated frequently, the IDART framework is NIST-recognized and designed for repeatability and measurable results. Atypical assessment includes the following high-level activities:Characterizing the target system and its architectureIdentifying nightmare consequencesAnalyzing the system for security strengths and weaknessesIdentifying potential vulnerabilities that could lead to nightmare consequencesDocumenting results and providing prioritized mitigation strategiesIDART assessors think like adversaries. To do this, they first develop a range of categorical profiles or"models" of a system's most likely attackers. Factors include an adversary's specific capabilities (i.e., domain knowledge, access, resources) as well as intangibles such as motivation and risk tolerance. The assessment team then uses this adversarial lens to measure the risks posed by system weaknesses and to prioritize mitigations. For efficiency and thoroughness, IDART relies on a free exchange of information. System personnel share documentation and participate in discussions that help assessors efficiently find as many attack paths as possible. In turn, the IDART team is transparent in conducting its assessment activities, giving system owners greater confidence in the work and the resulting analysis. All of these traits combine to make IDART a highly flexible tool. The methodology helps system owners identify critical vulnerabilities, understand adversary threats, and weigh appropriate strategies for delivering components, systems, and plans that are botheffective and secure. About the speaker: Russel Waymire is a manager at Sandia National Laboratories in the area of Cyber-Physical Security. Mr. Waymire has over 25 years of experience in the design, implementation, testing, reverse engineering, and securing of software and hardware systems in IT and OT environments. Mr. Waymire began his career as a software developer at Honeywell Defense Avionic Systems in Albuquerque New Mexico, where he developed the requirements, design, implementation, and testing of software for a variety of platforms that included the F-15, C-27J, KC-10, C-130, and the C5 aircraft. He then went on to Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque New Mexico where he has had an opportunity to work on a wide range of projects including algorithms in combinatorial optimization, software development for mod-sim force-on-force interactions and cognition/AI development, satellite software for operational systems in orbit, cyber vulnerability assessments for various US government agencies, and cyber physical assessments for numerous foreign partners that included physical and cyber upgrades at nuclear power plants and research reactors worldwide. Many people take over-the-counter supplements for a variety of reasons, but it isn’t always clear what’s in those supplements. And while they may be intended to help, some may cause harm. In this episode, host Aaron Lohr talks with Kevin Wei, MD, from the University of Southern California/Los Angeles General Medical Center Internal Medicine Residency Program about the presence of glucocorticoids in some over-the counter supplements and why that may be a concern. The misuse of large language models (LLMs) has drawn significant attention from the general public and LLM vendors. One particular type of adversarial prompt, known as jailbreak prompt, has emerged as the main attack vector to bypass the safeguards and elicit harmful content from LLMs. In this paper, employing our new framework JailbreakHub, we conduct a comprehensive analysis of 1,405 jailbreak prompts spanning from December 2022 to December 2023. We identify 131 jailbreak communities and discover unique characteristics of jailbreak prompts and their major attack strategies, such as prompt injection and privilege escalation. We also observe that jailbreak prompts increasingly shift from online Web communities to prompt-aggregation websites and 28 user accounts have consistently optimized jailbreak prompts over 100 days. To assess the potential harm caused by jailbreak prompts, we create a question set comprising 107,250 samples across 13 forbidden scenarios. Leveraging this dataset, our experiments on six popular LLMs show that their safeguards cannot adequately defend jailbreak prompts in all scenarios. Particularly, we identify five highly effective jailbreak prompts that achieve 0.95 attack success rates on ChatGPT (GPT-3.5) and GPT-4, and the earliest one has persisted online for over 240 days. We hope that our study can facilitate the research community and LLM vendors in promoting safer and regulated LLMs. 2023: Xinyue Shen, Z. Chen, M. On the show today, Alan and Michelle talk about her career journey, the ETS rebrand, the uniqueness of her current role, and why more organizations should be thinking of a similar structure at the leadership level. ETS's focus on people and mission of driving human progress forward is what drew Michelle to the company. As Chief Marketing and Innovation Officer, she is responsible for internal and external communications, customer insights and analytics, branding and marketing, e-commerce, philanthropic impact, global demand generation, and product innovation and development. Michelle Froah is currently the Chief Marketing and Innovation Officer at ETS, but when she was younger, she had aspirations to become an astronaut. While that dream never came to fruition, it did lead her to study mechanical engineering, which unexpectedly shaped her into the perfect person for the complex role she has now. Michelle started her career at Procter & Gamble, where she learned problem-solving under pressure and the value of a well-managed team. She then moved to Singapore and became the Asia Pacific Regional CMO for Kimberly Clark, where she developed a global perspective and understanding of local execution. She then founded Brandable before moving on to Samsung and serving as SVP of Global Brand and Marketing at MetLife before joining ETS in 2023, where she is focusing on transforming it into an organization that empowers human progress. As ETS enters a new category of future readiness, the CMO role itself is changing as well. While it is still about marketing, it is also about sorting through insights, perspectives, and growth strategies to apply them most effectively, which is where the innovation title comes in. Michelle's combination role allows her to work with all of their partners to serve customers in new ways and communicate that ETS is delivering real-time insights and solutions to help people enhance their skills. Michelle wraps up by talking about how her time as an engineer unexpectedly shaped her as a leader, team member, and well-rounded marketer, how shared goals empower marketers to tackle increased complexity and help the consumer win, how data can improve personalization, and the ways consumers benefit by melding marketing and innovation leadership roles. In this episode, you'll learn about:How being trained as an engineer made Michelle a more well-rounded marketerWhy ETS decided to rebrand and how they are launching it How ETS has been using AI for 20+ years and how they are evolving with the landscapeKey Highlights:[01:50] Always looking for the road less traveled by[03:45] What drew Michelle to ETS, and what does she do there?[05:30] It all comes together over time.[08:00] Michelle's career path: a global perspective and local execution[10:30] CMOs trained as engineers are just built differently.[13:10] What is ETS up to today?[15:30] Skills needed to be effective in the future[17:00] The future of CMO innovation [19:55] The AI portion of the show[25:20] Rebranding: why and how[30:30] Characterizing the new brand promise[33:15] The importance of her time as an engineer[36:10] Advice to her younger self [37:10] The increased complexity of marketing [39:10] Personalization supported by data[42:05] Thinking about how marketing and innovation can meld to improve customer outcomesLooking for more?Visit our website for the full show notes, links to resources mentioned in this episode, and ways to connect with the guest! Episode 494: The Christian Ufologist Author and researcher, John Milor, engaged in an erudite discourse on the subject of extraterrestrial beings during the latter segment of the program. Diverging from conventional Christian perspectives, Milor articulated a sophisticated viewpoint regarding the potential origins of ET entities. While upholding the orthodox interpretations of Christian teachings, Milor underscored the necessity of meticulous exegetical scrutiny of biblical passages to unveil the ontological reality of physical extraterrestrial life forms and their theological implications. Characterizing the Bible as a repository of esoteric knowledge, Milor expounded upon a metaphysical conflict between cosmic forces of righteousness and malevolence transpiring in the celestial sphere, which implicates the involvement of unidentified flying objects. He advanced the notion that angelic beings and the hybrid offspring known as Nephilim delineated in scriptural accounts could be construed as extraterrestrial entities. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/michaeldecon/support

Roger then asks what might have worked better, which leads Maru, Meena and Jeff to discuss groups they wish had been better represented. 00:27:05 - The Role of Allied Health ProvidersLouise asks why Allied Health Providers did not play a larger role throughout the process. Maru and Meena differentiate between providers' roles in the early process and the mechanics of rolling out to the patient community.00:29:38 - Focusing on the RolloutRoger's question about the rollout leads Jeff to focus on some of the key early stage events. Jeff and Maru go on to discuss the high level of participation from key journals.00:33:32 - Early AwarenessMike Betel brings a piece of data on physician awareness from the pre-test of a study he is conducting in Canada, which serves as a conduit into the entire topic of who is aware of the nomenclature today and how knowledge will spread over time. 00:38:56 - The New Message for Patients Louise notes that the upcoming UK effort to bring VCTE screening to primary care will provide an effort to define and characterize the disease for patients. Meena comments that providers have done this informally for years, but while the message used to be that the patient "just has fat on the liver," this nomenclature will formalize the disease, remove "just," and focus the patient on therapy.00:39:15 - MetALD - A New Disease in the SLD FamilyRoger states that in his mind, the newly defined disease MetALD is a major positive outcome of the process. Maru, Meena and Louise each describe ways this new definition will aid diagnosis and treatment, Mike notes that the message still must be tailored for each patient. 00:43:55 - Implication for Diagnostics The group discusses the idea that while the nomenclature will not lead to new diagnostic tests, it might lead to increased and more appropriate use of the tests that exist.00:48:25 - The Future of the NomenclatureRoger asks the group where this process will be in a year and five years. Answers vary.00:51:58 - Grading the Process So FarRoger asks panelists how they grade the process to date. With the release of the recent report, "Characterizing the Geothermal Lithium Resource at the Salton Sea" by Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, the first formal assessment of the much-touted lithium resource there is quantified. As we discovered in our earlier Creative Frontline KPFK Radio broadcast with Imperial Valley's Luis Olmedo of Comite Civico Del Valle, there are three questions of note. In plain English– The first is "How much Lithium is available?" The second is "How long will it last?" The third is "Will it trigger earthquake swarms on the San Andreas Fault?" The first two are answered in depth. The third is anybody's guess. According to the report, "Seismicity rates to the W of the fault increase moderately during the period of geothermal operations, whereas those to the E of the fault increase significantly." They relegated the question to page 163, Injection, as in Oklahoma fracking is associated with seismic events–earthquakes. In summary, the report says, "The detailed subsurface response to the expected increase in injection and production is still unclear, and further study is needed to forecast the seismicity ratio and magnitude." "Will Lithium Extraction Set Off a Major Earthquake in California?"
