This week, we are recapping our experience attending History Of The Bay, an event organized by fellow Bay Area hip-hop podcaster Dregs One. While it did not result in any usable interviews, DBRP co-hosts David Ma and Nate LeBlanc were glad to spend an afternoon immersed in the Bay Area's unique musical culture and to see performances from rappers such as Rappin' 4-Tay, B-Legit, and Kamaiyah. For this week's interview, DBRP host Demone Carter caught up with recurring guest and brilliant rapper Nappy Nina. Getting to know Nina and watching her level up her career has been one of the highlights of creating our show. We have been checking in with her in person and online for the past few years, and we are excited about her new collaborative project with producer Swarvy Nothing Is My Favorite Thing, out now. Dad Bod Rap Pod is produced by Demone Carter. Theme song by DEM ONE and Cutso. Brought to you by the good homies at Stony Island Audio

Growing up in Vallejo's Hillside neighborhood, B-Legit talks about his early days being influenced by the D-Boy culture of the 80s while also discovering hip-hop. While attending Grambling University for a year with E-40, they started rapping and decided to come back to Vallejo and form a group. From there, they created Sick Wid It Records and innovated business strategies to take independent rap music to the next level. This led to a deal with Jive Records and B-Legit has been a fixture in rap music ever since. In this episode he also discusses 2pac, Mac Dre, C-Bo, and many other highlights from his career. -- Sponsored by Christopher's Bakery @christophersbakery420 -- For promo opportunities on the podcast, e-mail: info@historyofthebay.com -- Produced by DEO @deo415, videography by @mvp_kingced --- Hat and hoodie by REBEL 8 https://rebel8.com -- History of the Bay Spotify Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3ZUM4rCv6xfNbvB4r8TVWU?si=9218659b5f4b43aa Online Store: https://dregsone.myshopify.com Follow Dregs One: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1UNuCcJlRb8ImMc5haZHXF?si=poJT0BYUS-qCfpEzAX7mlA Instagram: https://instagram.com/dregs_one TikTok: https://tiktok.com/@dregs_one Twitter: https://twitter.com/dregs_one Facebook: https://facebook.com/dregsone415 00:00 Intro 01:39 Growing up in a musical family 04:52 Vallejo in the 70s-80s 08:29 The D-Boy Era 13:49 Grambling University 17:05 MVP “The Kings Men” (first album) 24:09 The Click & mobb music 27:38 Sick Wid It Records 31:17 B-Legit the Savage “Tryin To Get A Buck” 33:33 Sick Wid It deal with Jive Records 38:28 Levitti 39:55 Bay Area rap scene 43:10 “Ghetto Smile” with Daryl Hall 45:33 “City 2 City” 47:30 Working with 2pac 53:49 Mac Dre 58:28 “Hempin Ain't Easy,” leaving Jive 1:03:27 The Bela Blunt 1:06:17 Longevity --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/historyofthebay/support

Until recently, a persistent narrative about women in hip-hop was that only one can succeed at any given time. But, that wasn't how the Bay Area rolled, especially in the 1990s as the region's hip-hop scene flourished. In the early decades of Bay Area rap, artists including Conscious Daughters, Suga T and Mystic established themselves as legends. They also built what they call a sisterhood: They recorded songs together. They showed up for each other's shows. And they helped their fellow female artists succeed in a cutthroat industry. We'll talk with women who pioneered Bay Area rap and how they continue to influence the genre today. Guests: Nastia Voynovskaya, associate editor, KQED Arts Carla “CMG” Green, one half of The Conscious Daughters, an American female hip hop duo from the Bay Area "SUGA-T" Tenina Stevens, rapper and singer from Vallejo, California. She is a founding member of The Click, a rap group that also includes her brothers E-40 and D-Shot and her cousin B-Legit. She is also an actress, speaker, business owner and nonprofit executive.
San Francisco legend Baldhead Rick tells Dregs One about his experience in the Bay Area rap scene after seeing his brother Cougnut rise to fame and his friend Cellski selling tapes in Lakeview, the neighborhood they all grew up in. Baldhead's very first song was with his group UNLV on Master P's classic compilation, West Coast Bad Boyz. From there, Baldhead was featured on hundreds of songs, albums and compilations, including 17 Reasons on Goldtoes' Black-N-Brown Entertainment. Along the way, Baldhead shares stores about encountering E-40, B-Legit, RBL Posse, and Totally Insane. Since Cougnut's passing in 2001, Baldhead has worked to keep his brother's legacy alive. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/historyofthebay/support

Veterans Day is a time for us to pay our respects to those who have served. For one day, we stand united in respect for you, our veterans. It fell on Nov. 11 because that is the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. Working Class Audio #188 with Justin Weis!!! Justin Weis is a San Francisco, California based audio engineer and owner/operator at Trakworx Mastering & Recording. Since starting Trakworx in 1995 Justin has mastered, mixed or recorded a wide variety of artists including Sammy Hagar, Papa Roach, Matt Nathanson, Larry Coryell, The Tubes, Agalloch, Pallbearer, The Coup, B-Legit, Zion I, Berner and Andre Nickatina. His approach is heavily oriented towards analog outboard gear and tape, integrated with modern digital tools. Justin started out in the 1980s on guitar, bass and vocals in local Rock bands, then developed a love for home recording. He graduated from California Recording Institute in 1994 and was hired by the school as an instructor. Within a year he started Trakworx in a small studio within the recording school. By 1997 he had established himself as a working engineer so he left teaching to create his own studio space. In recent years the mastering side of Justin’s business has begun to overshadow the recording/mixing side as demand for online mastering has steadily increased. About this Interview: Justin stops by my house to chat about not bothering your landlord, getting out of debt, thinking from your clients perspective and shifting towards doing more mastering than recording work. A 2016 VH1 Hip Hop Honors recipient and the First Lady of the BayArea’s multi-platinum royal family entertainment group, The Click. Along with her two brothers, E40 and D Shot, and cousin B Legit, The Click elevated Suga-T to become the biggest selling West Coast woman in hip hop, culminating with the multi-platinum hit “Sprinkle Me” with E40. “Sprinkle Me” was the first platinum hip hop hit by a brother sister duo. As a teen mom, Suga-T had responsibilities far beyond her own career ambitions and made it a point to take breaks away from hip hop, forced to create a variety of successful businesses both for survival and as a way of balancing out her fears of depending on music only. She knew before many artists that a star has to be a brand first, creating as many opportunities to make a living for yourself as possible to support the ones you love. In the midst of it all, she became a Young Grandmother, a matriarch of her own next generation responsible for two generations flourishing under her name. While re-inventing her brand to become a better role model, she experienced the good, the bad and the ugly. This experience gave Suga-T a lot of insight from a lot of perspectives which provided her the passion to increase her personal, professional and spiritual development. She shares all the nuggets and jewels that she experienced, and created The Winners Dictionary to better prepare others for their life journey or for the intervention in the middle of it.

The week in entertainment was led by two of the most polarizing women in the business right now. Busby and J.C. recap Wrestlemania 34 in New Orleans, where Ronda Rousey made her unforgettable debut amongst a night filled with entertaining madness. Then the iLLogiDuo then give a in-depth review of Cardi B's debut album “Invasion of Privacy,” and question whether or not the industry is trying to get rid of Nicki Minaj. Other topics include Drake's new single "Nice For What" & the accompanying music video, which sparked an interesting discussion via Twitter, the latest (and weirdest) episode of “Atlanta,” Hov's interview with David Letterman, and more. Music reviews for the week include Chloe x Halle's “The Kids Are Alright,” Kali Uchis' “Isolation,” Alina Baraz's “The Color of You,” Anonymous That Dude's “Trap & Field 2,” and E-40 & B-Legit's “Connected & Respected,” while Film/TV reviews include “On My Block,” and “Amateur.”
