It has been a while since we've delved into some listener emails, and since Hunter Ginn was in town for Agalloch rehearsals, we asked him to join us. He appears in this episode as a ghostly, disembodied spector. Regardless, some familiar topics arose such as AI, and Buckthead, but we also reveal our answers to the 666 degrees of separation segment, and discuss comments and questions posed by listeners.@radical_research --------------------Hosts: Jason Walton and Nick Wusz."I Hate Music" theme by Marius Sjoli, cover image by Jori Apedaile, intro video by Fredz.Produced by Jason Walton for Earth in Sound Productions.--------------------Support the podcast by becoming a Patreon member here: IHM PatreonFollow us on socials, donate to support the podcast, listen to our playlist on Spotify, and visit us online: I Hate Music LinktreeEmail and listener suggestions to: hate.pod.music@gmail.com#ihatemusicpodcast- Part of the Distorted Paths Podcast Network -
Toronto's atmospheric post-black metal trio A FLOCK NAMED MURDER has done it again! Their sophomore full-length, Incendiary Sanctum, drops May 2nd via Hypaethral Records, and it's nothing short of a masterpiece. This is an album that defies boundaries, merging black metal, post-metal, doom, and death metal into a sprawling, cohesive journey through sound and emotion. From the haunting field recordings in “The Eulogy Fields” to the crushing intensity of “Pierced Flesh Catharsis,” every track is a testament to their artistic evolution. The band pushes their sound to its limits with intricate melodies, visceral screams, and hypnotic atmospheres. Fans of Agalloch, Neurosis, and Cult of Luna will feel right at home while discovering something entirely unique. With stunning cover art by Adam Burke and guest appearances from Luke Farndon (Drofnosura) and Rob McAllister (Centuries Of Decay), Incendiary Sanctum is both a sonic and visual triumph. Cam Mueller describes the album as “a eulogy burning away the very idea of worship,” exploring themes of loss, memory, and humanity's fleeting existence.
We really cover ground on this one: prog goes pop on Rush's Power Windows, 2010s Britrock goes horribly wrong when The Blackout Start the Party, American Football reinvent emo on LP1, and black metal's most comforting album in Agalloch's The Mantle. This episode was originally published February 2024 on patreon.com/thatsnotmetal.
For our 126th episode, Radical Research travels to the farthest reaches of our favorite country and we do so with a rare companion, Agalloch lynchpin, John Haughm. In this episode, we dive into the discography of Thule, a progressive rock band that defies the rules of progressive rock. Dark, nocturnal, frozen, magical - Thule's seaborne prog offers the listener glimpses into forbidden worlds. We hope that this episode will seduce you into taking the risk that is well worth the reward. Note I:We were stoked as hell to have Agalloch's John Haughm with us for this episode. As such, we go on even more tangents than when we get up to that nonsense when left alone. So, tangents on Emperor, on Genesis, on ZZ Top, and on much more as we trawl the murky, exotic waters of Thule. Note II:The Radical Research Patreon page is now set up and ready for your patronage. We are offering tiered subscription levels for those who want a set-it-and-forget-it donation option. Likewise, we believe that tangible music formats help provide the richest, most rewarding immersions and that music, artwork, and song titles cooperate to produce a singular effect on the listener.
It's been a while, so we caught up on life. Agalloch in Australia, MoonBladder mini-tour, Travellers Rest shows, Recording Academy Board meeting, concerts we've seen in the last month, and concerts we will see soon. We also spend a mighty section of this episode on listener emails. We've been getting lots of them, with lots of questions and comments, so we decided to dive in! There has also been some push back from listeners on bands we have mentioned we don't like. We address some of these and listen to some bands that we've never listened to before because of it in a sort of "Virgin Listen" section of this episode. We've never had an episode quite like this one, so join us, listen, then email us and complain. -------------------- Hosts: Jason Walton and Nick Wusz. "I Hate Music" theme by Marius Sjoli. Hunter Ginn. Canvas Solaris, Plague Psalm, Agalloch, Dolven, Sculptured, Radical Research, Deserts of Hex.. what can this man not do? We decided to try and find out by inviting him to join us on IHM. Hunter wanted to discuss two albums that are very special to us; Primus' "Frizzle Fry" and Prong's "Beg to Differ." Both released in 1990, both helped usher in a new sound and new era for metal and alternative music. We delve into these records and related subjects. Of corpse, we also indulge in a few segments, and a few listener emails. So, call up Mike Browning and set the time machine to 1990, and join us. -------------------- Hosts: Jason Walton and Nick Wusz with special guest Hunter "Snack Doctor" Ginn. Back to this century again for our favourite songs of 2008, with a suitably eclectic mix taking in sparkly pop bangers, terrifying folk metal soundscapes, ultraviolent jungle, positive hip-hop & industrial speaker worriers. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year.Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) -Agalloch, Alphabeat, American Music Club, Bloc Party, Bon Iver, Boris, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Cult Of Luna, The Cure, Cut Off Your Hands, Death Cab For Cutie, Elbow, Fleet Foxes, Girls Aloud, Grouper, DJ Hazard, July Skies, Kings Of Leon, The Last Shadow Puppets, Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip, Nine Inch Nails, Opeth, Ox.Eagle.Lion.Man, Portishead, Retribution Gospel Choir, Sigur Ros, The Streets, Thomas Tantrum, The Watson Twins, and James Yorkston. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointHosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey BGuest starring Helen Jackson-Brown.Playlist compiling/distributing – Helen Jackson-BrownRecorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig PodcastsThanks to Peter Latimer for help with the scoring system.Part of the We Dig Podcasts network along with Free With This Months Issue & Pick A Disc.Twitter – https://twitter.com/wedigmusicpcast/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/wedigmusicpcast/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/wedigpusicpcast/Find our other episodes & podcasts at www.wedigpodcasts.com

Welcome to another episode of The Great Metal Debate podcast. It's your man Xander again back with another album review. Today we will be looking at the brand new album from the melodic funeral doom metal band from Athens, Greece called Ocean of Grief with their 2nd studio release titled Pale Existence. Some of my favorite melodic death metal bands include Agalloch and Be'lakor while my favorite funeral doom bands include Ahab (which I just recently talked about) and Shape of Despair. Ocean of Grief seems to take inspiration from all 4 of those bands to make ... dare I say, the perfect record. They have taken the best of all of those elements and combined their sounds to make an absolutely flawless music listening experience. There is an immediate sense of euphoria that you'll feel within the first minute of this record before it picks up with a calming electronic guitar melody. It briefly plunges into a soothing acoustic section and then the slow bellowing vocals creep in. This song is called "Poetry For The Dead" and the middle guitar riff only further compliments the band's playing style. The vocals have a monstrous sound that provide listeners with that tingly feeling under their skin in a relaxing sort of way. The drums toward the end of this song has a somewhat tribal vibe that is short lived but grants us a smooth transition into the next track which is titled "Dale of Haunted Shades". This one only puts listeners into a deeper meditative state as it has some pinch harmonic guitar notes which can be best described as hypnotic. Of course the vocals alone are deep and slow enough to make anyone laying down feel drowsy. But if you have your earbuds in and are walking alone on a nature trail early in the morning with heavy fog, you just might become one with mother earth or at the very least witness the ghost of a stag between the distant trees. "Unspoken Actions" will guide you through your own imagination of a cold winter stroll or even a misty one through the forest. There is even an audible bass guitar line in the middle of this song. Anyone who knows me, knows that I'm a sucker for sweet bass playing. But then we have a song titled "Imprisoned Between Worlds" which has some high note fingering tapping on the frets. It makes for a more upbeat moment in the depressing atmosphere of the album thus far. "Cryptic Constellations" is a song that only further reminds me of the band that I personally strive to be in one day. This one also has an incredibly groovy solo in it too. "Pale Wisdom" is no different from the rest of the songs on this album in terms of being very impactful. Its every bit as enjoyable as everything we have heard along the way. This entire album is a soul searching musical journey through the proverbial wilderness. Of course, just when I thought the bass solo from earlier couldn't get any better, I hear the one near this track's conclusion. Last but certainly not least, we get the final song of the record titled "Undeserving". It's winding guitar intro is a solid lead into more of those haunting harsh vocals that I enjoy so much. The riff in this one is melodic and catchy and it appears as though they have saved their best for last. This one is an epic conclusion to my favorite album of the year so far. While I do believe this piece of music is truly immaculate, most of the tracks just sort of tie themselves together in a way that makes the songs sound way too similar. Unless I were to spend the entire rest of the month analysing every single note played and memorized some of the lyrics, I wouldn't be able to tell you the name of the song if I walked in on it halfway. Also, the keys didn't quite stand out in the mix. Perhaps on the next album we can get some more audible symphonic elements. You can still bet your ass I will be supporting this band every way that I can and will definitely be buying their merch from their bandcamp. I'm giving Ocean of Grief's sophomore album an 8.5 out of 10.
Musician, Podcaster and Resident Mike Patton aficionado, Jason Walton (Agalloch, Sculptured, Snare of Sixes, Earth in Sound, I Hate Music Podcast), and I sat down to talk about the man, the myth, the legend: Michael Allan Patton. Jason put together a varied track list of some of General Patton's deep cuts from across his flagship bands, collaborative efforts, and one-offs. We talk about Patton's ability to subvert the frontman role, Mr. Bungle and Faith No More fandom in the 90s, the ever expanding musical universe that he inhabits, and how Patton's fearless approach to music inspires Jason's art to this day. It was a pleasure to welcome Daire (Vox/Bass) Charlie & John (Guitars) and new drummer Lachlan of Fornoth to the show. Fornoth have been building up a large following of fans over the past year with an well received appearance in Bloodstock coming off the back of with two terrific releases in April: 'From Across the Moors' e.p and 'Whispers Among the Trees' acoustic e.p. They lay claim to the term 'Bog Metal' but their sound is far more expansive than that as you can imagine; with influences ranging from Agalloch, Mastodon and Horselips thrown in for good measure. We cover a lot of subjects, including a conversation about their new release 'The Ferryman & The Lock Keeper' along with another track 'Stranger to the Sea'. Exciting things are on the horizon for fans of this brilliant Irish Metal band and I hope you take the time to check out their releases on the Bandcamp link I've posted below. Dreams of Consciousness Podcast Episode 219 features an interview with Falls of Rauros. On the surface, Falls of Rauros bear all the hallmarks of "cascadian black metal"; their blend of death/black, neo folk, and progressive rock bears many similarities to Agalloch and Wolves In The Throne Room, belying the the fact that the group is actually based in Portland, Maine (on the opposite side of the continent from their peers in the Pacific Northwest). I had an in-depth discussion about the band's egalitarian writing process with guitarist/vocalist Aaron Charles, guitarist/vocalist Jordan Guerette and bassist Evan Lovely (the band is completed by drummer Ray Capizzo), and accounting for any similarities they might have with other USBM bands. We also talked about whether the musical development on their latest release, Key to a Vanishing Future, can be described as "progressive". My thanks to Aaron, Jordan, and Evan for speaking with me, and to all of you for listening. I spoke with frontman and founder Dennis Mikula about a variety of subjects including growing up in a small town music scene, post hardcore music, his love of Agalloch, scars and much more.

Editor Jon Rosenthal sat down with John Haughm, Don Anderson, and Jason William Walton to discuss Agalloch's first EP, "Of Stone, Wind, and Pillor." Released shortly before "The Mantle," but including some very early Agalloch material (plus a Sol Invictus cover), it illustrates the early beginnings of the band and their influences, which is what we talk about in this episode. Includes a foreword by Aesop Dekker, who played drums on Agalloch's final two LPs and EP.

Pat and Reece from the New York provide us with an interview with Jake from Oni, the introduction to our new segment BrootalToob, showcasing the best in heavy metal oddities from the internet with our very first feature being Leo Morrachioli's (Frog Leap Studios) cover of the Gorillaz "Feel Good Inc." and a new Top 10 list in the form of the Top 10 Songs That Could Never Be Played on the Radio. The Social Media Highlight for this week gives an update on Forever Town's upcoming endeavors before discussing the circumstantially-associated Solitary Runaway. Sam sits down with guitarist Nathanael and violinist Evan of the Canadian neofolk-chamber-trio Musk Ox. We discuss the trio's tangential relationship to the metal world, Nathanael's and Evan's musical backgrounds, and their instrumental-prog-symphonic-metal band The Night Watch . We also discuss the art of composition vs "just playing", Nathanael's work with Agalloch, as well as nature vs nurture when it comes to musical talent. Thanks and enjoy!

We kicked things off by talking about the recent snowstorm in the Northeast. We then discussed the recent Reddit/Gamestop drama. After we tried to make sense of it all, we moved on to the new Wayne's World commercial that is making us a bit uncomfortable. We learn of the courtside Karen and dive deep and find her "Daddy." We also finally get to a very crucial new drop, one that we've referenced many times in recent years. Today guitar virtuoso Nathanael Larochette joins me to guide us through the twisted trails and rough seas charted by his band The Night Watch on their latest album, "An Embarrassment of Riches." We listen to the album in its entirety; dissecting, discussing and reveling in the creative process. You may know Nathanael from his work with Musk Ox, or perhaps his beautiful guitar interludes on Agalloch's last album, "The Serpent and the Sphere." Please pass the aux to Nathanael, and let his smooth Canadian voice sooth you into submission as we listen to his record and delve into the world, and adventure, that The Night Watch has created in "An Embarrassment of Riches." -------------------- "I Hate Music" theme by Marius Sjoli. Gonzo and I discuss why we love Agalloch's The Mantle so much. We offer our perspective and thoughts on the album as well as analyzing the music. Additionally, we talk about some bands that we are thankful for to coincide with Turkey Day. I would also like to apologize about the mishap I had/described about the song the "Hawthorne Passage". Tal Fried is an Israeli native living in Tel Aviv. Israel has a long and vibrant history of fascinating metal bands, rich with the culture of their homeland but also with an ear turned towards the metal community worldwide. Unfortunately, a large number of these bands have remained unknown to metal fans outside of Israel, so I asked Tal to show me the hidden gems that lay next to The Mediterranean sea. Many metal fans are familiar with Salem or Orphaned Land, but in this episode Tal takes us on a quick, but in depth, trip into the world of Israeli metal. We discuss the importance of Israeli promoter Yishai Sweartz and the Agalloch performance in Tel Aviv almost a decade ago. Tal plays death, black and doom metal bands from Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, and shares personal stories of his interactions with them as well as accounts of their live performances. In no way is this meant to be an exhaustive history of metal in Israel. This is simply the tip of the iceberg in a deeply rooted and passionate scene. So pass the aux to Tal and listen as we share stories, fight xenophobia, and delve into the metal community in one of my favorite places in the world; Israel. -------------------- "I Hate Music" theme by Marius Sjoli. -------------------- https://www.facebook.com/hatepod.music/ https://www.instagram.com/i_hate_music_podcast/ Email and listener suggestions to: hate.pod.music@gmail.com Donations to support our podcast: paypal.me/hatepod #ihatemusicpodcast

Mirai Kawashima and Sigh have been pushing, dare I say, smashing the paradigms within metal for decades. From their early days on Euronymous' Deathlike Silence Productions to their most recent album "Heir to Despair," Sigh has found comfort in the dark seeping underbelly of music. I asked Mirai to provide some music to share with my cohort Don Anderson. Music that has intrigued him, confused him, provoked him or perhaps inspired him over the years. He gave me a bounty of music from Jazz, to Metal, to Traditional Asian and beyond. Join Don and I as we digest this heaping plate of broken guitar chords and squealing horns. Along with Mirai's song choices we discuss Portland record shopping, Primus, improvisation and poor performances. -------------------- "I Hate Music" theme by Marius Sjoli performed by Billy Smeer. Don Anderson needs no introduction. He is the mastermind behind Prog Metal mainstays Sculptured, the guitarist for KHôRADA and perhaps best known for wielding the guitar for Agalloch for 20 years. Don is also a college professor, a snappy dresser, a beer snob and one of my absolute closest friends. Today Don and I talk obscure 90's death metal, share some current music, as well as revisit our past in Agalloch and recount our memories regarding the making of Agalloch's "From Which of this Oak" demo. Don closes out this episode with an acoustic rendition of an Agalloch classic. https://www.facebook.com/hatepod.music/ "I Hate Music" theme by Marius Sjoli. Closing music "Taking My Body Apart" by Sculptured.

Working Class Audio #188 with Justin Weis!!! Justin Weis is a San Francisco, California based audio engineer and owner/operator at Trakworx Mastering & Recording. Since starting Trakworx in 1995 Justin has mastered, mixed or recorded a wide variety of artists including Sammy Hagar, Papa Roach, Matt Nathanson, Larry Coryell, The Tubes, Agalloch, Pallbearer, The Coup, B-Legit, Zion I, Berner and Andre Nickatina. His approach is heavily oriented towards analog outboard gear and tape, integrated with modern digital tools. Justin started out in the 1980s on guitar, bass and vocals in local Rock bands, then developed a love for home recording. He graduated from California Recording Institute in 1994 and was hired by the school as an instructor. Within a year he started Trakworx in a small studio within the recording school. By 1997 he had established himself as a working engineer so he left teaching to create his own studio space. In recent years the mastering side of Justin’s business has begun to overshadow the recording/mixing side as demand for online mastering has steadily increased. About this Interview: Justin stops by my house to chat about not bothering your landlord, getting out of debt, thinking from your clients perspective and shifting towards doing more mastering than recording work. Aesop Dekker. One of my favorite people on the planet. I have toured through countless countries with this man, and shared countless beers and stories. I have suffered with him, and I have rejoiced with him. Aesop is a monster drummer, and a generous soul. I was very excited to have him join me and geek out about obscure music. Closing track "Grave Mistake" by Extremity. "I Hate Music" theme by Marius Sjoli.
This week the Dan and Ralph go over last weeks picks, and review "The Witch", and Agalloch's "The Mantle". Dan talks a bit about Hereditary and why any fans of horror should see the movie. They planned on having a guest, but someone got a little sleepy and didn't make it to the studio. That's for another day. Also discussed - we rank the discography of The Beatles, the need for a new sport, the end of the Jerry Springer Show, top games shown at E3, and the most important albums you've listened to that will never get old.
I have shared many important memories and even more important beers with Ryan Kirsch in many different places throughout North America and Europe. Ryan has traveled thousands of miles to have the distinction of seeing Agalloch more times than anyone outside the band or crew. So, naturally, he and I became friends. On this episode Ryan and I share music and discuss French Black Metal and how horrible Chinese food in Estonia can be. "I Hate Music" theme by Marius Sjoli. Bumper Music by Peste Noire and Zeal and Ardor (live.)
This week we talked to Jason Walton, who you may know from Cascadian black metal legends Agalloch, his upcoming new project Khôrada, or his even old noise project Nothing! We chatted about the beginnings of Agalloch, going from bars to huge festivals, the importance of clean socks, and how Khôrada will be different from his past work.
So, we're back, unsurprisingly. This week we cover a lot of news, and go deep on politics! Specifically, Brexit and how it affects the music industry, the whole hubbub about complaining about SJWs in metal (not gonna link that article) and the counter-hubbub, David Maxim Micic's Stock Challenge where he made an EP with just free stock plugins, Steven Wilson's cover of Prince getting removed from streaming services, this relatively older article about Spotify's research on metal fans being more loyal listeners, Phil Bozeman of Whitechapel complaining about elitism on their new video, more info about the Agalloch breakup, Cavalera Conspiracy performing Sepultura's Roots in its entirety live on its 20th anniversary, Tom "Fountainhead" Geldschlager and his copyright troubles with Obscura, Einar from Leprous joining Haken onstage, Wardruna/Enslaved/Skuggsja's Norse By New York event, and Incendia management's music PR event. We also talk about new music from Fountainhead, Periphery, Soilwork, Thank You Scientist, The Dear Hunter, Ringworm and Myrkur. Finally, we talk about hype culture and how it poisons everything. Enjoy!

Surprise! This week we have an interview, with Chris of Schammasch, the Swiss avant-garde band we've been raving about for weeks. We get his perspective on art, avant-garde and meaning behind music. A great chat! Definitely listen to Triangle (here is a good place). Then we do our news round-up, new music from Hatebreed, Six Feet Under (why), Meshuggah, Setentia, Brujeria, The Levitation Hex and the DOOM OST. We talk about Agalloch's disbanding, Rob Zombie's being a Babymetal fan (and my short review of their live show), and we talk about Radiohead, Beyonce and Drake taking a stance against Spotify, and the big perspective of the streaming service wars. Then we talk about how album art reflects on the music, inspired by our conversation with Chris. We have an extensive cool people section this time, gushing over DOOM and talking about the Southern Reach Trilogy by Jeff VanderMeer. Enjoy!
We say farewell to one of the pioneers of Cascadian BM and welcome a new host to the Powerchord ranks!Featuring stuff from local shows (Bosse-De-Nage, Galgamex, Magrudergrind) and a bunch of tunes from Bridget to get us acquainted with her taste (Bongripper, Trouble, Hoopsnake)
