Dennis Rader, the self-proclaimed "BTK" killer—short for "Bind, Torture, Kill"—terrified Wichita and Park City, Kansas, for nearly two decades. But behind the mask of a monstrous mastermind was a man whose crimes were riddled with laughable mistakes, sloppy execution, and a bizarre craving for attention. In this episode, we dismantle the myth of BTK as a criminal genius and reveal the truth: Dennis Rader wasn't brilliant—he was a bungler. November 28, 2004. Nairn, Scotland. An unidentified man arrives at the front door of 30-year old Alistair Wilson and hands him an empty envelope with the name “Paul” written on it. The man shoots Alistair three times and takes the envelope back before fleeing the scene and the murder weapon is found in a nearby drain ten days later. Investigators explore a number of different theories and eventually conclude that the crime might be connected to a dispute over a decking area at a hotel pub located across the street from Alistair's home. Police believe that at least two people were involved in the murder and have one potential suspect in mind, but the crime is never solved. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore one of the most bizarre cold cases in the history of Scotland. Even though police track Nonnie's cell phone signal and her scent to a nearby field, no trace of her can be found. July 12, 1988. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Four-year old Barbara Jean Horn disappears from the front yard of her home before her nude body is discovered inside a cardboard box resting on a curb in the same neighbourhood. Nearly four years later, a suspect named Walter Ogrod, who had lived across the street from Barbara Jean's residence, is arrested after he confesses to her murder and after two trials, he is convicted and sentenced to death. However, Walter claims his confession was coerced by corrupt police detectives and there are numerous allegations of misconduct and serious issues with his conviction. In 2020, after a new review is performed of the case, Walter's conviction is overturned. While he is finally released from death row and fully exonerated, no one else is charged with the crime. Last week, in Part One of our series about the murder of Barbara Jean Horn, we shared the basic facts about the case. This week, in Part Two, we will attempt to analyze and break down this crime by sharing all the different theories about what happened, as well as explore some other wrong conviction cases which took place in Philadelphia during this time period and involved the same law enforcement figures who put Walter Ogrod in prison. If you have any information about this case, please contact the Philadelphia Police Department's tip line at (215) 686-TIPS (8477). Sam and Margaret Kastanis met while playing in a band and were married in 1987. When the children came along, they quit the band to focus on family. Margaret said that even after a decade of marriage, she still often had butterflies in her stomach when she looked at her husband.  The couple had three beautiful children: Melissa, 11, Clinton, 9, and Christine, 6. The neighbors described the family as idyllic.Margaret became severely ill with the Epstein-Barr virus and had been out of commission for more than a month. Sam eventually had to take time off from work to stay home with her and the children because she had no energy to care for them. By November 17th, 1991, Sam had been off work for several weeks, and Margaret was frustrated she wasn't getting better. The couple recently put their house up for sale and received a bid. Now, it looked like they would be moving and buying a bigger and better house during the holiday season, yet Margaret was still not fully recovered. Add to this the fact that Margaret had made friends with a mentally unstable woman in the neighborhood and that she, too, had recently shown signs of paranoia. It became evident to some that the Kastanis family was beginning to unravel. But nobody who knew the couple could have known that four of the five members of the Kastanis family would never make it to Thanksgiving. August 23, 2010. London, England. After he is not heard from for a week, the nude decomposed body of 31-year old Gareth Williams, a junior analyst who had been working with MI6, is found inside a padlocked holdall bag in the bathtub of his flat. While his cause of death cannot be determined, there are differing opinions about whether Gareth could have locked himself in the bag on his own and suffocated, or if he was murdered by an unknown third party. A number of different theories are pushed forward, such as Gareth being killed by Russian agents or becoming the victim of a sex game gone wrong, but there are no conclusive answers about how he died.  Did Gareth Williams somehow manage to trap himself inside the bag and die in a tragic accident, or did something else take place? On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore of the most bizarre unexplained deaths in the history of the United Kingdom. July 14, 1994. Rochester, Pennsylvania. After leaving her home, 14-year old Sarah Boehm goes missing and a cryptic letter is soon found inside her bedroom. Even though Sarah supposedly wrote about being in a relationship with an abusive man and expressed a desire to run away, the authorities question the legitimacy of the letter and wonder if it may have been intended to mislead the investigation. Over three months later, a murdered Jane Doe is found 50 miles away in the Berlin Lake Wildlife Area in Ohio and in 2003, the victim is positively identified as Sarah. It turns out that the body of another murdered girl, 17-year old Kathryn Menendez, was found in the same wildlife area one month after Sarah originally went missing. Even though Kathryn lived only a few miles away and there is no apparent connection between the two victims, investigators explore the possibility that they were both killed by the same perpetrator. July 10, 1999. Pierrefonds, Quebec. 42-year old Janet Kuchinsky leaves her residence in order to go out for a walk, but never returns. The following morning, Janet's body is found in a wooded area next to a bicycle path located one kilometre from her home and she has been bludgeoned to death by a blunt instrument. Months later, a serial killer named William Patrick Fyfe is charged with the murders of a number of other women which also happened to occur in the West Island region of Montreal during this time period, but no evidence links him to Janet's death and the crime is never solved. April 29, 1996. Senneville, Quebec. 51-year old Andre Lalonde, a veteran constable with the Montreal Urban Community Police, pulls over a Ford Tempo with a noisy muffler for a seemingly routine traffic stop before he is fatally shot by the driver. It turns out the vehicle was stolen and it is later found abandoned in an industrial section of Montreal after having been set on fire. There is speculation that in the weeks prior to Lalonde's murder, the Tempo may have been used during a series of bank robberies, but while investigators believe they have a potential suspect in the shooting, they lack the evidence to file charges. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we travel back to our home country of Canada to explore a pair of unsolved murders which took place in the West Island of Montreal. After an all-night partying spree, 20-year old Arnold Archambeau, Arnold's 18-year old spouse, Ruby Bruguier, and Ruby's 17-year old cousin, Tracy Dion, get into a car accident and roll over into a frozen ditch. By the time help arrives at the scene, Tracy is still trapped inside the car, but Arnold and Ruby have disappeared. Three months later, Arnold and Ruby's bodies are found submerged in water in the ditch over 75 feet away from the accident scene and their cause of death is determined to be exposure. However, the investigation turns up some odd discrepancies to suggest that Arnold and Ruby may have still been alive during the three-month window they were missing before their bodies were brought back to the ditch and placed there by an unknown party. Did the couple actually die of exposure on the same morning of the accident or did something else happen? June 16, 1991. Denver, Colorado. An armed gunman commits a robbery from the underground vault at the United Bank Tower on Father's Day and makes off with $197,000 in cash. While the six employees from the vault are allowed to live, the assailant fatally shoots four guards: 41-year old Phillip Mankoff, 21-year old Todd Wilson, 33-year old William McCullom Jr. and 21-year old Scott McCarthy. Two-and-a-half weeks later, a 54-year old retired police officer named James King, who once worked as a guard at United Bank, is arrested and charged with the robbery and the murders. However, since the stolen money is never recovered and no physical evidence links King to the crime, the case against him is very circumstantial and King is acquitted of all charges at trial. Was James King actually responsible for this crime or did law enforcement allow the real perpetrator to get away with it? Three years later, the FBI announces they are investigating the possibility that the couple were the victims of a murder-for-hire plot, but they do not name any potential suspects and no trace of Danielle, Richard or the truck are ever found. Could the couple have disappeared when they accidentally drove into a body of water, or did foul play actually take place? On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore the unsolved disappearances of Danielle Imbo and Richard Petrone, one of the most perplexing missing persons cases of the modern era. Nashville, Tennessee. 18-year old Melissa Chilton and 18-year Tiffany Campbell show up for work at Exotic Tan for Men, a tanning salon which doubles as an adult entertainment establishment. At some point during their shift, an assailant murders the two women in the salon's laundry room and they are stabbed a combined total of over 100 times. Seventeen years later, a suspect named Patrick Streater, who happens to be Tiffany's former boyfriend, is charged with both murders. However, in 2018, the authorities announce that new DNA testing has significantly weakened their case against Streater, making it impossible to take him to trial, so the murder charges are dropped. Did Patrick Streater actually kill Melissa Chilton and Tiffany Campbell or was someone else responsible? On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore a horrific double homicide which is often referred to as the “Tanning Bed Murders”. May 30, 1968. Mead, Colorado. After leaving a party being held at his fiancee's residence, 18-year old Leroy Drieth is killed when his car crashes into a tree. Prior to the crash, Leon had reportedly made a statement that he was going to kill himself, so his death is ruled to be a suicide. Decades later, Leroy's sister learns some incriminating information about an altercation which supposedly took place at the party between Leroy and some of Patty's family members. After Leroy's body is exhumed, an autopsy uncovers a pair of knife wounds on his neck and while his cause of death is officially changed from “suicide” to “undetermined”, there are still no conclusive answers about how Leroy was killed. October 18, 1992. Fauquier County, Virginia. While horseback riding with a friend, 37-year old Shelly Malone is supposedly thrown to the ground before her horse stomps on her chest with such force that it ruptures her heart. While Shelly's death is ruled to be an accident, her family notices suspicious behaviour from her friends, as well as alleged discrepancies in their story about how she was killed. After discovering small traces of blood inside her truck, Shelly's family becomes convinced that she was murdered and that the so-called horseback riding accident was staged, but are unable to convince the authorities to reclassify her death. December 30, 1995. Minneapolis, Minnesota. 31-year old Anne Barber Dunlap disappears after her husband, Brad Dunlap, claims that she went on a shopping trip. Two days later, Anne's car is discovered in a K-Mart parking lot with her body inside the trunk and she has been repeatedly stabbed in the head and neck. Since Brad took out a life insurance policy on Anne in the months prior to her death, he becomes the police's prime suspect. However, Anne's parents vigorously defend Brad and there is not enough evidence to conclusively implicate him in her death. Was Anne Barber Dunlap actually murdered by her husband or was an unknown third party responsible? On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore a controversial unsolved homicide which has spawned very divisive opinions. March 10, 2007. Chocowinity, North Carolina. The mother of 19-year old university student Ginni Wood calls her up on her cell phone, but after their brief conversation ends, Ginni is never heard from again. Ginni told her mother she had travelled to Brownsville, Texas for spring break in order to visit her 19-year old best friend, Kelly Gaskins, and Kelly's 23-year old boyfriend, Ervin Williams. However, it turns out that Ervin is a fugitive who fled North Carolina after failing to appear in court on numerous felony charges and Kelly is also wanted for a probation violation. This leads to speculation that the couple travelled across the border into Mexico in order to evade the authorities before Ginni joined them there, but Ervin and Kelly are also not heard from again. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore the perplexing story of three American citizens who seemingly went missing together in Mexico and have not been seen for the past 17 years. January 22, 1989. Temecula, California. The housemate of 30-year old Marine Captain Jeffrey Digman returns to their residence and discovers that Jeffrey has been shot to death inside his bedroom. Since a gun Jeffrey owns is lying next to him, his death is ruled to be a suicide and investigators theorize that he had become despondent over a recent transfer to Puerto Rico. However, Jeffrey's parents discover some suspicious discrepancies to make them suspect he was murdered and while his cause of death is eventually changed from “suicide” to “undetermined”, there are no conclusive answers about how he was killed. February 20, 1992. South Korea. 30-year old Army Staff Sergeant Billy Ray Hargrove is found hanging by a parachute cord from a tree outside his residence and his death is ruled to be a suicide. Billy Ray's best friend, 37-year old Army Sergeant First Class Mike Carmichael becomes convinced that Billy Ray was murdered and vows to perform his own independent investigation. However, six weeks later, Mike is discovered hanging by a parachute cord from a locker handle inside his barracks office. Even though Mike's death is also ruled to be a suicide, his family believes that he was murdered in order to cover up the truth about Billy Ray's death. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore two suspicious and controversial suicide cases from the military involving three different servicemen whose families believed were the victims of foul play.
