*Content Warning: This episode of Doin' Time may contain audio images of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who have died, and discussion of Deaths in Custody. This special Doin' Time program is a dedication and tribute to the much loved and honourable Uncle Ray Jackson, born 27 March, 1941 and died on April 23 2015. He was a Wiradjuri warrior who dedicated his life to fighting for justice and human rights for Aboriginal people, and much more. Our first Tribute to Ray is Joseph Pugliese longtime activist and much loved guest on Doin Time, and close friend of Uncle Ray Jackson. We will hear from his loved ones throughout the show.We will also interview Carolyn Jackson daughter of Uncle Ray. She has been a much loved part of the show since 2015 when her father passed away. Ray is missed by Carolyn, and her beautiful family.Lastly, we will bring you an interview with Rob from Monday Breakfast. On Saturday the 26th of April around 450 activists attended a counterprotest in the name of trans liberation. The action was countering the reactionary 'WOMEN WILL SPEAK' rally, organised by TERFs and white nationalists. A similar event held last year by the Women's Action Group, an organisation dedicated to spouting transphobia, was attended by members of the National Socialist Network. A group of trans and queer people, antifascists, and other allies disrupted Saturday's action by making noise and dancing to music in numbers vastly higher than that of the transphobic rally. Police set up a designated area during the day and used these powers to force activists, many of whom are disabled, to remove their masks before searching them with a wand. VicPol later used brutal force against protestors who were chanting about Victoria Police's murder of Somali man Abdifatah Ahmed in Footscray two weeks ago. Doin' Time spoke to Rob Harrison, a proud non-binary, transgender and queer person, who attended the rally and witnessed the police violence. They are a co-host of the Monday Breakfast show at 3CR Community Radio. I invited Rob on to the show today because Uncle Ray was very committed to fighting police powers, and always stood in solidarity with our trans siblings. Rob gave an eyewitness account of the rally, and the police brutality.
The boys are joined boy Rob Harrison, a retired Air Force Intelligence operator that was in the AC130 above the incident known as Robert's Ridge. Rob witnessed the entire incident. In the dark morning hours of September 11th 1991, in the small town of Jasper Alabama, a couple named Earl and Carrie Lawson were awoken by a fake emergency phone call that lured them out of the house. A masked man was waiting in their carport. Earl was bound with duct tape and the assailant forced Carrie their SUV and sped off into the darkness. Carrie had been kidnapped for ransom. It seemed like something you only saw in movies. In the last episode, I told you all about the parade of mistakes the FBI made in this case. Now we're getting into the repercussions of those mistakes, and even more bad decisions…as Carrie Lawson's life hung in the balance. In the wee hours of September 11, 1991, Earl and Carrie Lawson were awoken by an urgent phone call from a woman claiming to be a nurse who said Earl's father was hospitalized and might not make it through the night. The couple threw on clothes and rushed out the door, only to be stopped by a masked man as they were getting in their Ford Explorer. He bound Earl with duct tape, then forced 25 year-old Carrie into the Explorer and raced off into the darkness. Their families were shocked to discover this was a kidnapping for ransom. For nearly a decade, the Wellnitz family murders haunted the small town of Columbia, Kentucky. The tight knit community had no clue why these good people were mercilessly executed in their own home. They were known for their thriving veterinary clinic and their kind hearts. But someone had been viciously murdered the family and even though investigators were pretty sure they knew who did it, the case went cold. It took ten years and heroic undercover work to get justice for the Wellnitz family. Parents have to trust caregivers. It's just a fact of life. Often we feel more comfortable with a family friend than a daycare. That's what Tiffany and David Shell did for their daughter Annie. They trusted Brandi Giannunzio. She babysat their two youngest daughters. She was good with their girls. They had no reason to believe Brandi would leave their girls with her boyfriend. They had never met Benjamin Brown. But on August 9, 2018, he was left alone with their daughters. And then they had to face the unthinkable. Late on a Sunday night in September of 2016, Atlanta power couple, Tex and Diane McIver, were driving back into the city and got caught in Atlanta's notorious traffic. Diane's best friend was driving as Diane rode in the passenger seat and her husband, Tex, sat directly behind her. What happened next would cause one of the most hotly debated criminal cases in recent Atlanta history.I covered this case in August 2019. When Officer Keith Turner pulled over a car in Moody, Alabama on June 25, 1998, he thought it was a routine traffic stop. The 29-year-old husband and father had no idea that the men in the car were two escaped convicts, Mario Centobie and Jeremy Granberry. In November of 1999, 24-year-old Cherica Adams was eight months pregnant when she and the father of her child, 25-year-old Carolina Panthers wide receiver Rae Carruth, went on a double date. They saw a late-night showing of a serial killer flick at the theater. As Rae led Cherica back home to her apartment in his white Ford Expedition, with Cherica following behind in her black BMW, he unexpectedly slowed to a near stop. Confused, Cherica slowed down too. In the lead-up to Christmas, 1927, the good citizens of Cisco, Texas, were looking forward to celebrating the holiday with their nearest and dearest. But a group of men who rolled into town on the morning of December 23 from Wichita Falls had different ideas. Led by an ex-con in a Santa Suit, their actions at the town's First National Bank went on to spurn one of the state's biggest manhunts, ultimately leaving six men dead and numerous others wounded. What unfolded not just over the following week but the next couple of years afterward was equal parts a comedy of errors, a gripping tale of Wild West justice, and a tragedy for those who stepped up to protect and serve during one of the most audacious heists in Southern history. More than 200 babies, known as the “Hicks Babies,” were sold by Dr. Thomas Hicks from the back of the Hicks Community Clinic in McCaysville, Georgia during the 1950s and 1960s. Until his actions came to light, he was a respected and beloved doctor in McCaysville, known for helping everyone…often taking things like a sack of potatoes in return for payment. Some town residents defend his actions to this day, but the “Hicks Babies,” as they became known, are still struggling to find their birth mothers and come to terms with their origins and the damage Hicks did by keeping his practice shrouded in mystery. Everyone who frequented Barley's Taproom & Pizzeria in Knoxville, Tennessee, knew bartender and waitress Carrie Daugherty. She was a friendly 24-year-old woman who had a quick wit and a sweet smile. But, on March 19, 2008, Carrie's body was discovered on her own front lawn. She'd been brutally murdered. Those who knew Carrie were shocked. This was a woman with no enemies. In August and September of 1969, one man killed five people in the span of 29 days in Memphis, Tennessee. These violent crimes shook the city of Memphis to its very core. Lock sales skyrocketed. Families adopted large dogs. People refused to leave their house after sunset. It felt like no one was safe. The police searched day and night for this elusive serial killer. They doubled—then tripled—their staff, canceled all vacation time, and poured over $100,000 into paid overtime. But were it not for the brave actions of the killer's final victim, Mary Christine Pickens, the perpetrator might have walked free for far, far longer. They exhausted every avenue—interviewing over 2,000 people, contacting experts across state lines, and enlisting new homicide detectives in droves. But no matter how many resources law enforcement used, they seemed no closer to catching what the media dubbed “a cunning sex killer.” Until, one day, the citizens of Memphis just so happened to solve the case for the authorities. By the 1960s, organized crime gangs were well and truly already becoming a presence across the north of the United States, as underworld figures fought for sole control over highly lucrative gambling, illegal alcohol, and prostitution rings. Down south, things were done a slightly different way. But even though one criminal network in particular didn't have a strict code, this didn't make them any less dangerous. Based out of Biloxi, MI, they soon monopolized the control of many illicit activities across numerous states where big profits could be made, but only by those willing to be uncompromisingly ruthless. In 1927, a young woman met a violent end in a Chattanooga hotel. Reports on how she came to her death are mixed, but the legend of her gruesome story persists almost 100 years later, and for good reason. In 1971, Sundays in Savannah, Tennessee were for two things: church and family. That was especially true for the Stricklin family. One Sunday, 66-year-old Mollie and her husband, 81-year-old William, invited their son and his wife to their new home for a midday meal. Mollie made the food. Her daughter-in-law served the tea. Afterward, they all went for a nice drive in the city. The get-together seemed fun and innocent—until Mollie and William became terribly ill. Days later, William died. Mollie barely recovered. When evidence revealed that the Savannah couple had been poisoned with arsenic, questions started to arise. Little did they know that William's death was only the beginning of a case that would change the Stricklin family's lives forever. On a hot Friday the 13th in June of 1980, Allan Gore was worried. He couldn't get a hold of his wife, Betty. For hours, he'd called her over and over. No answer. Betty always answered. She didn't get out by herself, especially not with their two small daughters. She hated when he traveled--scared of being alone, so Allan was trying to check in to reassure her. Now he was starting to panic. He finally got his neighbors to get into his house. When he called back, he could never have been prepared for the staggering horror of what happened to his wife. A real suburban axe murder. It sounds like fiction. So thank you most recently to Melody and Denise but also to everyone who has emailed me over the years. Y'all were right. This one was a doozy.Hosted and produced by Erica KelleyResearched and written by Andrea Marshbank & Erica Kelley Original Graphic Art by Coley HornerOriginal Music by Rob Harrison of Gamma RadioEdited & Mixed by Brandon Schexnayder of Southern Gothic & Erica KelleyThis episode is sponsored by BetterHelp.
