I too, have put more value in the things that hurt because suffering is familiar. I know her. I know suffering. And I have plenty of evidence that the shelter of suffering has kept me safe, kept me “out the way”. But at what cost? There is rent for living underneath the shelter of suffering. As with everything, there is a sacrifice. The cost was often my inner child who needed me to tend to her wounds but I couldn't bear her pain so I just kept looking away. The cost was often my body which needed my attention, my care, my tenderness, my grace but was often treated as a liability instead. The cost was often my dreams that needed my power, my protection, my faith but seemed too wild to be safe, too pleasurable to count on, too gooooood to be true. I just want us to consider, if only for this moment, how exhausting it is to be in perpetual disbelief of our power. The exhibition aims to create a generative space for inspiration, solace, and refuge through a presentation that blends new and recent works with pieces from the late 19th to mid-20th century by artists whose careers never reached full recognition or potential during their lifetimes due to systemic erasure.” — CCS Bard

We are celebrating this Mother's Day by channeling Divine Mama energy with Empress Karen M. Rose! Trained in Eastern and Western Herbal Medicine, Karen M. Rose created an outlet for her teachings and healing modalities with the opening of Brooklyn-based Sacred Vibes Healing and Sacred Vibes Apothecary in 2002.  Her inspiration for this work began as a child in her native home of Guyana, where she was exposed to how African, Caribbean and Latin American traditions profoundly influenced plant medicine and community healing. The legacy of these lands is the foundation of Karen's spiritual and healing practice. In this conversation, we cover her book The Art & Practice of Spiritual Herbalism, Karen's history growing up in relationship with plants where there was no separation of Spirit, and how she weaves that into her work today.  We talk about Mal de Ojo, or the evil eye, and the importance of energetic and spiritual protection for babies, as well as related physical symptoms, such as colic.  Karen shares some of the biggest challenges that she sees in her community and mothers, and why it's critical to weave in medicine as part of your daily life. She talks about how incorporating the rituals of food and medicine into daily practice with children can be a form of self-care and self mothering. We also touch on the topic of Orishas - what they are, their importance in nature and medicine, and the Orishas connected to Mother such as Yemaya.  Karen weaves in ways to tend to our mother wounds and learn to nurture and Self-mother our selves, including her favorite plant allies to support Mothers. We touch on racial disparity in maternal health outcomes, the resilience and strength of black women and populations, and how to tap into these generational gifts for healing. Karen shares how she works with her own ancestors and plants to connect with her generational resilience and gifts, and so much more.  In the intro, I reference my upcoming group mentorship for healers and helpers who are ready to step out of the spiritual closet, expand their intuitive gifts, and go from conventional practitioner to New Earth Intuitive Healer. Emergency Care Of Open Wounds/When It Hurts by Indigo Calmly rinse the wound with copious amounts of cold tap water. This will significantly reduce the possibilities of infection. If available, use clean linen applied firmly against the wound to inhibit bleeding. If the pressure is not adequate, do it again. Another method allows the bottom of a stainless steel saucepan to be applied to the wound. The cold of the pan reduces swelling as well as bleeding. A poultice of mandrake berries can be of great use also, until further care can be offered. Emergency Care Of Wounds That Cannot Been Seen Hold the victim gently. Rock in the manner of a quiet sea. Hum softly from your heart. Repeat the victim's name with love. Offer a brew of red sunflower to cleanse the victim's blood & spirit. Fasting & silence for a time refurbish the victim's awareness of her capacity to nourish & heal herself. New associations should be made with caution, more caring for herself. Sassafras, Cypress and Indigo, Ntozake Shange Where do the healing practices and wisdom of our ancestors live in your body? How do you access them, claim them, reanimate them? For some of us that will look like activating personal practices that may only be extended to ourselves and our families. For others, it may look like a practice that is offered to the community to assist others who's way of activating their healing is through connecting with you. They are healers who become a facilitator, mentor and guides to access health and well being for our bodies, minds and spirits. Navigating Our Terrain
Why Working Through Ancestral Trauma Is the Key To Healing w/ Karen M. Rose

Navigating Our Terrain

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 23, 2020 53:17

As a society, we’ve lost much of the healing knowledge that our ancestors held. With that loss, combined with corporate greed, has come a fear of herbal medicine. Karen M. Rose joins me to talk about how the Divine Feminine is rising, ancient medicine is finally coming back, and why you need to heal your spirit. Karen says we need to rediscover how to trust ourselves, unlearning all the years of corporate propaganda that have been embedded into our minds. When we’re ready to expand ourselves, we will feel more comfortable exploring ancient medicines as an alternative to modern, and in my opinion last resort, medicines. Regardless of where your medicine comes from, true healing comes from within yourself. And with the global rise of the Divine Feminine, we’re seeing mass healing on a bigger scale than ever before. But for many women, especially black women, we need to deal with ancestral trauma that’s been passed down through our lineage. What modern medicine is missing is the language of wellness. Modern medicine treats the symptoms but it doesn’t look at the root cause or the health of your spirit. We’ve truly disconnected from the spirit of the earth and are only now finding our way back. Karen believes that we all need to celebrate and feel our joy every single day. Even when you’re fighting the good fight, sad about the state of the world, or whatever other negative emotions are swirling around in you. When you embrace joy, you embrace life… and you should always strive to be that calming and joyful model for others, as Karen is every day. For Karen, our spirit is the most important aspect of ourselves to heal. There is a connection between illness and spirit; you can’t heal only one, and you might find that when you’re healing your spirit, you’re also healing your illness and trauma. How are you finding and celebrating joy every day? How have you connected to your spirit today? I’d love if you shared your thoughts in the comments on the episode page.   In This Episode: Why we’ve developed a fear of herbal medicine Where healing comes from How the emergence of the Divine Feminine is healing the world What does it look like to have ancestral trauma in your lineage How modern medicine has ignored the language of wellness Why you need to stay connected to joy, especially through difficult times How you can be a model for joy and relaxation for others What the connection between illness and spirit is How you can show up in both your trauma and your joy   Quotes: “I find that our language in the West is designed to create a separation between ancient medicine and people. So, of course, if we think of it as something alternative or something that is next to normal, we have a harder time using it.” (6:34) “The more healed you become the more you see what you need to heal.” (15:22) “We’re going to delve into all the ways in which plants work in this body but also all the ways in which plants work in the spirit. They cannot be separated from what’s going on around you spiritually and emotionally.” (41:26)   Links Find the full episode post here Find Karen M. Rose Online Follow Karen M.
